The reset is a new starting point rather than a permanent lock on what you see. Instagram begins personalizing recommendations again from the content and accounts you interact with after the reset.

Reset Instagram recommendations: the exact steps
The setting is available from your profile rather than from the Explore or Reels viewer itself. Follow this sequence:
- Open Instagram and tap your profile.
- Tap the three-bar More options icon.
- Tap Content preferences.
- Tap Reset suggested content.
- Read the information shown and accept the terms when prompted.
- Tap Reset suggested content a second time to confirm.
After confirmation, Instagram treats your suggested-content profile as a fresh starting point. The control is designed for recommendations, not as a general account reset.

What the reset actually changes
It covers three recommendation surfaces
Meta describes the reset as applying to suggested content in Explore, Reels, and Feed. That is broader than resetting the Explore grid alone. If the same unwanted themes appear in several of those areas, the single setting addresses the recommendation system across all three.
It starts a new personalization cycle
Meta’s official explanation says: “Your recommendations will start to personalize again over time, showing new content based on the content and accounts you interact with.” The practical implication is that the first recommendations after a reset are not a final result. Instagram uses later interactions to adapt what it suggests.
It is not a promise of permanent change
A reset does not freeze recommendations in a preferred state. Continued activity can influence the suggestions that return. If you repeatedly open, watch, like, comment on, share, or otherwise interact with a type of recommended content, that activity can become part of the new personalization process. The reset gives you a cleaner starting point; it does not prevent future recommendations from changing.

Meta specifically includes following-list review in its guidance. Open your following list and identify accounts whose posts you no longer want influencing your regular Instagram experience. Unfollow accounts that are no longer relevant to you.
This is separate from resetting suggested content. The reset addresses recommendations, while following-list review changes the set of accounts you deliberately follow. Do not assume that confirming the reset automatically unfollows anyone or removes every post from followed accounts.
A practical review method
- Open your profile and view the list of accounts you follow.
- Look for accounts that consistently lead you toward topics you now want to avoid, or accounts you no longer recognize or use.
- Unfollow only the accounts you no longer want in your following list.
- Keep accounts you still value, then use Instagram’s recommendation controls for unwanted suggested posts that remain.
The review is optional, but it gives you more direct control over the accounts that supply content to your normal feed.

Train recommendations after the reset
Once the reset is complete, use Instagram’s feedback controls deliberately. They are more targeted than a full reset and help refine individual recommendations as they appear.
Use “Interested” for topics you want more often
When Instagram offers a recommendation you genuinely want to see more of, choose Interested where that control is available. This signals a positive preference for that recommended topic. Use it on examples that closely match what you want rather than selecting it indiscriminately.
Use “Not interested” for unwanted suggestions
Choose Not interested on a recommendation you do not want. This is a focused response to an individual suggestion and can be used repeatedly as unwanted material appears. It is useful when most of your recommendations are acceptable but a particular topic, format, or post keeps returning.
Filter words and phrases with Hidden Words
Instagram’s Hidden Words control lets you specify words or phrases that should be hidden from posts. Add terms that identify topics, names, or phrases you do not want to encounter. This is a filtering tool, not a replacement for the recommendation reset, so use it alongside the reset when specific wording is the problem.
Use Following Feed and Favorites when you want less recommendation content
Following Feed
Following Feed provides a chronological view of posts from accounts you follow. It is useful when you want to see followed-account posts without relying on a recommendation-heavy view. Because it focuses on accounts you already follow, it gives you a more predictable way to catch up.
Favorites
Favorites lets you prioritize selected accounts. Add the accounts whose posts matter most to you, then use Favorites when you want those accounts to receive priority in your viewing routine.

These views do not perform the reset and do not change the suggested-content profile by themselves. They are alternate ways to browse while Instagram’s recommendations personalize again.
Reset versus smaller recommendation adjustments
Choose the broad reset when the problem affects several recommendation surfaces. Choose a narrower control when only individual suggestions or specific words are a problem.

Why an Explore or Reels page can feel wrong after a reset
Instagram’s recommendations are built from the content and accounts you interact with. A reset removes the previous recommendation starting point, but your subsequent activity supplies new signals. That means an unwanted pattern can return if your later interactions repeatedly point toward it.
Recommendations can also differ between the three surfaces covered by the reset. Explore, Reels, and Feed may not display identical posts at the same moment, so judge the result over your normal use rather than from one screen immediately after confirmation.
Separate recommendations from followed-account posts
A post from an account you follow is not necessarily a suggested post. If you still see material from an account you deliberately follow, review that account in your following list. The reset is not described by Meta as an automatic unfollow operation.
Separate recommendations from advertising controls
Meta’s announcement describes resetting recommended content. It does not say that the action removes every ad preference or guarantees a different advertising experience. Treat recommendation reset, following-list management, and advertising settings as separate matters.

What to do immediately after confirming
- Return to Explore, Reels, and Feed and note which suggestions are clearly relevant to you.
- Use Interested on recommendations that match your preferred topics.
- Use Not interested on suggestions you want reduced.
- Add recurring unwanted terms to Hidden Words when wording is the main issue.
- Use Following Feed for a chronological view of followed accounts.
- Use Favorites when you want selected accounts prioritized.
- Revisit your following list if an unwanted account remains a source of posts you no longer want.
This approach combines the one-time broad reset with smaller, ongoing choices. It avoids treating every unwanted post as a reason to reset the entire recommendation profile again.

If “Reset suggested content” is missing
Do not assume that a missing menu item means you followed the wrong path. Meta’s announcement described the feature as being tested before a global rollout, so availability can differ by account, geography, or app version.
Check the path again
From your profile, open the three-bar More options menu and look for Content preferences. The reset appears inside that section, not as a button on the Explore grid.
Allow for account and rollout differences
If Content preferences is present but Reset suggested content is not, the feature may not yet be enabled for that account or location, or the account may be using an app version in which the option is not available. Meta has not stated that every account receives the control at the same time.
Do not substitute unrelated settings
Changing notification choices, switching to a different feed view, or editing Hidden Words does not perform the reset. Those controls can still help manage what you see, but they address different parts of the Instagram experience.

How long does Instagram take to relearn your preferences?
Meta does not publish a fixed relearning time or a success-rate statistic for the reset in its announcement. It says recommendations personalize again over time based on later interactions, without promising an instant result or a specific number of hours or days.
For that reason, avoid judging the reset solely by the first few posts you see. Use the feedback controls consistently and keep your interactions aligned with the topics you actually want recommended. There is no official timetable that can be used to guarantee when the result will look settled.
Common situations and the appropriate response
Most of Explore, Reels, and Feed feel unrelated
Use Reset suggested content, then apply positive and negative feedback as new recommendations appear. Review followed accounts if posts from accounts you no longer want are also part of the problem.
Only one or two posts are unsuitable
A full reset may be unnecessary. Use Not interested on those recommendations and continue browsing. The narrower control requires less curation than rebuilding recommendations across all three surfaces.
You want to avoid a recurring topic identified by words
Add the relevant terms or phrases to Hidden Words. This targets wording associated with the topic rather than changing every recommendation.
You mainly want posts from people you already follow
Switch to Following Feed for chronological followed-account posts. Add key accounts to Favorites if you want them prioritized.
The reset completed but unwanted suggestions remain
That outcome does not necessarily mean the reset failed. The reset begins a new personalization process; it does not promise that every later recommendation will be suitable or that all unwanted categories disappear immediately. Use Not interested, Hidden Words, following-list review, Following Feed, and Favorites according to the specific source of the unwanted material.
