There is no verified, universal Onkyo reset sequence that guarantees your settings will survive. The correct procedure and the settings it affects depend on the receiver model. Find the model number on the chassis or in your paperwork, open that model’s official manual, and read its reset or initialization section before pressing any button. If the manual does not clearly explain what is erased and whether anything can be restored, stop and use Onkyo’s official product-support route. You can reduce the risk of lost work by writing down your configuration first, but that is a manual record—not a manufacturer-confirmed backup.

Why the exact Onkyo model is the first step

“Onkyo AV receiver” describes a large family of products rather than one device. Onkyo publishes separate documentation for models such as the TX-NR5100 and TX-RZ50, so a button combination that applies to one receiver cannot safely be assumed to apply to another. Front-panel layouts, menu names, initialization options and the scope of a reset can vary by model and firmware.

The official support and product material available for this topic does not establish one reset sequence for every Onkyo receiver. It also does not establish a universal rule that a reset preserves input assignments, speaker settings, network details, calibration data or other preferences. No general Onkyo backup-and-restore feature is verified here. Treat any web page that presents one button sequence as suitable for every Onkyo receiver with caution unless it identifies your exact model and cites that model’s manual.

Locate the model number before touching the controls

Use the complete model designation, including the letter and number combination. A partial description such as “7.2-channel Onkyo” is not enough to select the right instructions.

  • Check the label on the rear or underside of the receiver. Use a flashlight and photograph the label so you have the designation while working at the television.
  • Look at the original box, invoice, warranty paperwork or the first page of the owner’s manual.
  • Read the receiver’s front-panel display only if it shows a model identifier; do not infer the model from the appearance of the buttons.
  • Write down the exact suffix as well as the main number. Similar-looking receivers can have different documentation.

If you cannot identify the model, do not attempt a reset as a guess. Contact Onkyo support with a clear photograph of the label and the symptoms you are seeing.

What to confirm in the exact manual

Open the official manual for the model you identified and search for terms such as reset, initialization, factory default, clear and memory. Read the surrounding paragraphs, warnings and notes, not just the line that lists the button operation. Before proceeding, you should be able to answer each question below.

Question What the manual must tell you If it is not stated
How is the operation started? The exact front-panel or remote controls, menu path, timing and confirmation step for your model. Do not substitute a sequence from another model. Ask official support.
Is it a full initialization or a narrower reset? Whether the command returns the receiver to factory defaults or clears only a particular function. Assume the scope is uncertain and postpone the reset.
Which settings are erased? Specific information about inputs, speaker configuration, network data, listening modes, calibration and user preferences. Make a written record and obtain clarification before continuing.
Can settings be backed up and restored? A documented export, USB, app or other restore path, if the model supports one. Do not assume a backup exists because another receiver has one.
What happens after completion? The model’s setup procedure, required accessories and any calibration steps. Ask support what must be repeated before you reset.

Onkyo’s official support page directs product-support visitors to its support site. Use that route when the manual is missing, the wording is ambiguous or the receiver will not accept the documented command.

Make a manual setup record before resetting

Writing down your current configuration cannot preserve it inside the receiver, but it gives you a reliable reconstruction sheet if the reset clears it. Photograph every relevant on-screen page as well as the rear-panel cable layout. Include the date and the receiver model on the notes.

Input and source assignments

  • Record which HDMI, optical, coaxial, composite or analogue jack each source uses.
  • Note the source name shown on the receiver and any renamed inputs.
  • List the television’s audio-return connection and the input selected for it, if applicable to your model.
  • Write down preferred listening modes or sound-processing choices for each source instead of relying on memory.

Speaker and listening-room settings

  • List every speaker that is connected, including the subwoofer, height or surround channels and any channels intentionally set to “none.”
  • Record speaker size or crossover choices, distances and level trims exactly as displayed.
  • Photograph the speaker-wire connections and note polarity so a cable is not moved during the reset and reconnection.
  • Save any manual equalizer, tone, bass-management or dialogue settings that you want to reproduce.

Network and control details

  • Record the network name and the connection method. Do not write a Wi-Fi password in a document that will be left beside the receiver; store it in a password manager or another secure place.
  • Note static IP, DNS, proxy or other manually entered values if you used them.
  • List remote-control macros, trigger connections, control-system addresses and mobile-app names that you will need to recreate.
  • Take screenshots of firmware information and any account or service settings that the manual says may be cleared.

Calibration evidence

If your model has an automatic room-calibration result, photograph its measured values and save any printed report. Keep the supplied microphone and its cable together with the receiver so you can repeat the model-specific process if required. Do not assume that a calibration file can be exported or reloaded unless your manual explicitly documents that function.

A safe, model-specific reset workflow

The following workflow avoids inventing a button sequence while still giving you a concrete way to proceed.

  1. Identify the model. Read the complete designation from the chassis label or original documentation and verify that the manual’s cover matches it.
  2. Read the reset or initialization section. Confirm whether the operation is a full factory initialization or a limited clear command, what controls are used and what confirmation message should appear.
  3. Check retention and recovery statements. Look for an explicit list of erased settings and any documented backup or restore process. The absence of such a statement is not proof that settings will be retained.
  4. Create your setup record. Photograph menus, write down assignments and settings, and secure network credentials as described above.
  5. Prepare the room and power state. Keep the receiver connected to stable power, leave the display device available to read confirmation messages and remove distractions that could cause you to release a button early. Follow any power or cable instructions in the manual exactly.
  6. Perform only the documented operation. Use the controls and timing specified for that model. If the display does not show the expected confirmation, stop rather than trying another sequence from memory or from a different model.
  7. Wait for completion. Do not unplug the receiver during a process that the manual says is still running. When the manual indicates completion, allow the unit to restart before changing settings.
  8. Rebuild from the record. Follow the model’s setup pages in their stated order, then test each source and speaker before adding optional customizations.

If any step conflicts with the instructions in your manual, the manual wins. If the manual is unavailable or you cannot determine whether the command will erase your configuration, contact Onkyo support instead of experimenting.

What “without losing your setup” can realistically mean

There are two different goals people describe with that phrase. The first is retention: the receiver keeps its settings after the reset. The second is recovery: the receiver clears them, but you can restore them from a documented backup. The official material available for this subject does not verify either behavior across the Onkyo range. Your exact manual must settle the question for your model.

  • SMART AV RECEIVER: Works with Sonos, Chromecast built–in, AirPlay 2, and DTS Play–Fi; includes Spotify, Amazon Music HD, Pandora, TIDAL, Deezer, and TuneIn streaming services

A handwritten or photographed record is a third option: it does not prevent erasure, but it can make re-entry faster and more accurate. Label it honestly as a reconstruction aid, not as a backup file. Do not promise yourself that a reset is reversible until the manual describes a restore path and explains what it contains.

Rebuilding calibration after a reset

A reset can leave you with setup work, but the work is model-dependent. The TX-NR5100 product information provides one concrete example: its AccuEQ process sets speaker distance, sound-pressure level and crossover, and the listed accessories include a setup microphone. For that model, keep the microphone available and follow the TX-NR5100 instructions for positioning it and starting AccuEQ.

That example must not be generalized to every Onkyo receiver. A different model may use different calibration software, controls, microphone requirements or manual setup options. If your manual does not mention AccuEQ or does not specify the same measurements, use its own procedure rather than copying the TX-NR5100 steps.

Model evidence currently available

Model or source What is established What is not established
Onkyo TX-NR5100 An official product listing exists; it identifies a remote and setup microphone among the included accessories and describes AccuEQ measurements for speaker distance, sound-pressure level and crossover. The reset button sequence, the complete list of settings erased and a backup/restore method are not established by that listing.
Onkyo TX-RZ50 Onkyo publishes a separate official manual for this model. The specific reset operation, retention behavior and recovery options are not established by the material available here.
Other Onkyo receivers They require their own model documentation. No universal sequence or universal settings-retention rule is established.

Use this table to understand why a generic “hold these two buttons” instruction is not a safe substitute for the manual that matches your receiver.

If the remote is missing or faulty

A remote is not automatically required for every reset; the exact manual may specify front-panel controls or a menu path. Do not buy a replacement simply because you plan to reset the receiver. First check which controls your model’s documented procedure uses.

If a remote is required and yours is unavailable, identify the receiver model before checking compatibility. The TX-NR5100 listing shows that a remote is an included accessory, but that does not mean any universal replacement will operate its reset command or every menu function. Ask Onkyo support or the remote manufacturer to verify compatibility with the complete model number.

When to stop and contact official support

  • You have only a family name or a partial model number.
  • The manual describes initialization but does not say which settings disappear.
  • The manual uses a term such as “memory clear” without explaining its scope.
  • The receiver shows no confirmation after the documented controls are used.
  • You need to preserve a carefully tuned theater and cannot recreate it from notes.
  • The receiver is stuck during startup, repeatedly shuts down or shows a fault that might not be solved by initialization.

Give support the exact model, serial-number information if requested, firmware version, the symptoms, the connections in use and the steps you have already taken. Ask three focused questions: Is this the correct reset for my model? Which settings will be erased? Is there a documented way to save or restore them? Keep the answer with your setup record.

Common mistakes that cause avoidable setup loss

Using a sequence copied from a different model

Similar front panels do not prove identical firmware or controls. A sequence that works on one receiver may do nothing on another or may trigger a different command. Verify the model before following any sequence.

And the TX-RZ70 offers four distinct THX listening modes: cinema, gaming, music, and surround EX.

Assuming a reset is the same as a restart

A restart and an initialization serve different purposes in many products, but the available Onkyo material does not define one universal distinction or menu structure. Read the manual’s description of the command you intend to use instead of selecting the most dramatic-sounding option.

Skipping photographs because settings “are in the app”

An app view is not proof that the receiver can export or restore every setting. Capture the receiver’s own menus and preserve the values you would need if the app connection also has to be configured again.

Unplugging as soon as the display changes

Follow the manual’s completion indication. Interrupting a documented process can create a different problem from the one you were trying to solve.

Re-entering everything before testing one basic path

After setup, select one known source and confirm video, audio and the expected speakers. Then add network services, control macros and personal sound preferences. This order makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from wiring, the source device or a later customization.

A practical decision checklist

  • Model confirmed: The full model number on the receiver matches the manual.
  • Scope understood: The manual says whether the command is full initialization or a limited reset.
  • Losses listed: You know which assignments, speaker values, network entries and calibrations will be removed, or support has clarified them.
  • Recovery assessed: Any backup or restore function is documented for this model; otherwise you have a written and photographic record.
  • Accessories ready: You have the model-appropriate remote and, where the manual requires it, the calibration microphone.
  • Post-reset plan: You know which setup pages and tests to complete after the receiver restarts.
  • Support fallback: You know how to reach Onkyo’s official support route if the procedure or result is unclear.

Only proceed when every item is satisfied. If preserving the existing configuration matters more than clearing the fault, support guidance is the safer next action than a guessed reset.
