A factory reset is a last resort: it can erase saved settings and account information. The right steps depend on whether the TV uses legacy V.I.A., SmartCast, or a newer VIZIO OS interface.
Start with the least disruptive fix
Check the connection and reopen a legacy V.I.A. app
For older VIZIO TVs with V.I.A. apps, the VIZIO quick-start guide recommends checking that the TV is connected to the internet, pressing EXIT to close the app, and opening it again. If the app still fails, turn the TV off with the remote’s POWER button, then turn it back on. This is guidance for the legacy V.I.A. interface, not a universal SmartCast or VIZIO OS procedure.

Restart the TV with a soft power cycle
A soft power cycle turns the TV off and back on to restart its operating system. Menu labels vary by model generation, so treat these as examples rather than a single route for every VIZIO TV:

- V-Series example: Menu > System > Reset & Admin > Soft Power Cycle > Yes.
- 2020 M-Series example: Menu > Admin & Privacy > Soft Power Cycle.
- Some older models: System > Reboot TV.
- VIZIO’s April 17, 2025 Cast update notice: for affected users, check for updates and restart through All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Restart TV; on some models the option is labeled Soft Power Cycle.
For the exact menu route on your set, use the manual for its model number. VIZIO’s V-Series TV User Manual and 2020 M-Series User Manual use different menu names.

Can you reset, delete, or reinstall one VIZIO app?
Do not assume that a VIZIO TV has the same app-management controls as a phone or streaming stick. PBS says its guidance for VIZIO SmartCast TVs does not offer the delete-and-reinstall option available on some other streaming devices. That limitation is specific to the SmartCast context described by PBS; it does not establish that every VIZIO generation lacks every app-specific control. The cited guidance also does not establish a universal clear-cache menu, so there is no dependable generic cache-clearing path to give for all VIZIO TVs. See PBS’s SmartCast troubleshooting tips.
Use a factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset restores TV settings to defaults, rather than merely restarting the TV. It can remove saved configuration such as wireless and picture settings, and reset custom settings or login information. The reset process may ask for the system PIN, confirmation, and setup again afterward.

Menu paths vary. The V-Series manual gives Menu > System > Reset & Admin > Reset to Factory Defaults. The 2020 M-Series manual gives Menu > Admin & Privacy > Reset to Factory Settings. Check the manual for your exact model before proceeding; the labels and behavior may differ.
Use the factory-reset option only after the connection check and less disruptive restart steps have failed and you are prepared to configure the TV again. VIZIO’s V-Series manual and 2020 M-Series manual describe the model-specific reset menus and consequences.

When the problem may be an update or Cast issue
An app or casting symptom can sometimes coincide with a platform issue rather than a problem isolated to one app. In a notice published April 17, 2025, VIZIO described a Google Cast issue affecting certain 2016–2020 TVs and an update rollout, recommending that affected users check for updates and restart using the route for their model. That dated notice is not evidence of a current general outage or the cause of every app failure. See VIZIO’s Google Cast update notice.

V.I.A., SmartCast, and VIZIO OS are not interchangeable labels for every generation. If your on-screen options differ from the examples above, look up the TV’s exact model in its manual or VIZIO support material before choosing a reset. VIZIO’s VIZIO OS Apps Catalog lists apps in the current ecosystem, but does not document app-reset procedures.

If your remote is missing or unusable, a replacement compatible with your exact VIZIO model may let you navigate the required menus; confirm compatibility before buying. A replacement remote enables the steps but does not itself repair app software.
