To factory reset an Acer Chromebook, sign out, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r, choose Restart, then select Powerwash and Continue. Powerwash erases local user data, including files in Downloads, so back up anything you need first. This is Google’s general Chromebook procedure; exact recovery steps can vary by Acer model.
Choose the right kind of reset
| Option | Use it for | What happens to local data | ChromeOS reinstalled? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safety Reset | Pop-ups, unwanted extensions, or certain settings, network, or input problems | Preserves local files and apps; disables extensions, restores selected settings to safe defaults, and deletes cookies and temporary site data. | No |
| Hardware reset | Some keyboard, touchpad, or hardware behavior problems after simpler troubleshooting | May delete some files in Downloads. | No |
| Powerwash (factory reset) | A profile or settings problem, preparing the Chromebook for handoff, or persistent abnormal behavior | Erases local user data, including Downloads, settings, and apps. | No |
| ChromeOS recovery | A serious operating-system problem, such as a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” message | Erases local data. | Yes |
These distinctions follow Google’s guidance for factory reset, Safety Reset, hardware reset, and ChromeOS recovery.

Before you Powerwash an Acer Chromebook
- Back up files you want to keep from Downloads and other local folders to Google Drive or an external storage device. Verify that the backup is accessible before resetting. Google says files already in Drive or on external storage are not deleted by the Chromebook reset.
- Know that Powerwash removes local data; it does not delete content stored in your Google Account or other cloud services.
- If this is a work or school Chromebook, contact your administrator before trying to wipe it. Management and re-enrollment are governed by the organization, and a local reset does not necessarily remove its enrollment or erase cloud-synced and Admin-console data.
How to factory reset (Powerwash) an Acer Chromebook
- Sign out of the Chromebook.
- Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- In the prompt, select Restart.
- When the reset dialog appears, select Powerwash, then Continue.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the Chromebook again. The first Google Account used to sign in after the reset becomes the device’s owner account.
Google Chromebook Help describes the local-data impact this way: “A factory reset erases all user data on your Chromebook’s hard drive, including all the files in the Downloads folder.” Its instructions also warn work and school users that they cannot reset the device themselves and direct them to their administrator.

For unwanted pop-ups, extensions, or selected settings problems, Safety Reset may address the issue without erasing local files or apps. It disables extensions, restores selected settings to safe defaults, and removes cookies and temporary site data. Find it in Chromebook settings by searching for Safety reset, then follow the on-screen prompts. Google documents the feature in its Safety Reset instructions.

Hardware reset is different from factory reset
A hardware reset restarts Chromebook hardware; it does not perform a Powerwash or reinstall ChromeOS. For most Chromebooks, Google’s general sequence is to turn the device off, hold Refresh, and tap Power. Google cautions that a hardware reset might delete some files in Downloads. Follow Google’s hardware reset instructions for the exact steps and exceptions for your device.
Use ChromeOS recovery for serious operating-system failures
Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and erases local data, so it is more invasive than Safety Reset or Powerwash. Google recommends turning the Chromebook off and on first, trying a factory reset if the error remains, and using recovery if the serious OS error persists.

Enter recovery mode
On many Chromebooks, hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power. Some models use Esc + Maximize instead, and tablets use a different button sequence. Disconnect attached devices before starting. If the standard combination does not work, check support for your exact Acer model; Google’s key sequence is not guaranteed for every model.

If you need USB recovery, create recovery media on a second working Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome, using Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility instructions. Google specifies a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the recovery media erases the selected drive, so move any files you want to keep off it first. Select the affected Chromebook model in the Recovery Utility.
