How to Reset a Samsung Chromebook and Protect Local Files

On a Samsung Chromebook, the standard factory reset is called Powerwash. It removes local user data, so back up files in Downloads and anything else stored only on the Chromebook before you begin. If the device is managed by a school or workplace, contact its administrator instead of using the consumer reset flow.

Before you start: back up local files

Powerwash erases local user data, including files in Downloads, settings, and apps. Google Chromebook Help warns that “A factory reset erases all user data on your Chromebook’s hard drive, including all the files in the Downloads folder.” Files in Google Drive or on external storage are not erased by Powerwash; move any important local files to one of those locations first. Google’s reset instructions also recommend syncing account information before resetting.

Reset the Samsung Chromebook with Powerwash

Use this procedure if you can sign in and intend to return the Chromebook to factory settings. Google recommends trying simpler troubleshooting first when appropriate.

  1. Sign out of the Chromebook.
  2. Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.
  3. In the dialog, select Restart.
  4. After the Chromebook restarts, select Powerwash, then Continue.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the reset.
  6. When setup finishes, sign in with the account you want to own the Chromebook. The first account used after Powerwash becomes the owner account.

See Google Chromebook Help’s factory-reset instructions if the prompts differ or you need the official troubleshooting flow.

For a work- or school-managed Chromebook

If your Samsung Chromebook is managed by an organization, contact its administrator for wiping and re-enrollment rather than attempting the ordinary consumer reset. Administrators can use ChromeOS management procedures to wipe a device. Google’s guidance explains the process in Wipe ChromeOS device data.

Powerwash removes locally encrypted user and enterprise data by clearing cryptographic keys, but it does not necessarily remove every device-related record: some diagnostic and device-health information, forced-re-enrollment knowledge, and cloud-stored data can persist. Cloud data is not deleted by Powerwash, so handle it separately if you need it removed. See Google’s Powerwash and data-erasure guidance.

Powerwash, hardware reset, and recovery are different

Option Purpose What it does
Powerwash (factory reset) Return the Chromebook to factory settings Erases local user data; does not reinstall ChromeOS.
Hardware reset Troubleshoot hardware functions Restarts hardware functions; it is not a factory reset and is not intended to erase user data.
ChromeOS recovery Address serious operating-system damage Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. Use it if restarting and factory reset have not resolved a serious error.

When a hardware reset may help

A hardware reset is a troubleshooting step, not a substitute for Powerwash. Google’s general Chromebook procedure is to turn the device off, hold Refresh, and tap Power. Some older Samsung Series 5 and Series 5 550 Chromebooks have model-specific hardware-reset instructions. Because the exact Samsung model matters, check Google’s hardware-reset guidance for the correct procedure rather than applying an older model’s steps to an unspecified Chromebook.

When to use ChromeOS recovery

Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS, so reserve it for serious operating-system errors that remain after restarting and trying a factory reset. If you use the USB recovery method, the drive must hold at least 8 GB. Creating recovery media erases the drive’s existing contents. Follow Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.

Samsung model and reset limits

The Powerwash steps above are Google’s general Chromebook factory-reset instructions and apply to Samsung Chromebooks running ChromeOS. The precise model is not specified here, and Google’s cited guidance does not provide a complete Samsung model-by-model variation list. For hardware-reset steps in particular, identify the exact model and follow its applicable instructions. Powerwash resets local data; it does not by itself delete files stored in the cloud.
