If one player has forgotten a Project Zomboid server password, an authorized administrator can run removeuserfromwhitelist <username> in the server console or hosting-panel console. The player is then prompted to create a new password on the next connection. This targeted reset is faster and safer than deleting the server database.

Use the targeted whitelist reset first
The whitelist command is designed for a single player. It removes that username’s whitelist record, including the stored password, without requiring you to erase the rest of the server database. You need administrator rights on the Project Zomboid server and the player’s exact in-game username.

- Confirm that you are authorized to administer the server.
- Ask the player for the exact username used to join the server. Usernames are not interchangeable with a display name, Steam profile name, or an email address.
- Make sure you are connected to the console for the correct server instance, especially if your hosting account runs more than one Project Zomboid server.
- Tell the player to remain disconnected while you make the change. They should reconnect only after the command has been accepted.
Run the command
- Open the dedicated server’s console, or the console supplied by your hosting panel.
- Enter
removeuserfromwhitelist <username>, replacing<username>with the player’s exact in-game username. - Submit the command and watch the console for its response. If it reports an unknown command, a permission problem, or an invalid username, stop and correct that issue rather than changing database files immediately.
- Have the player reconnect with the same username. Project Zomboid should ask them to set a new password.
- After the player gets in, verify that they can leave and rejoin with the new password.
This procedure resets the selected whitelist entry; it does not provide a way to read the old password. Passwords are stored in encrypted form, so recovery means clearing the old credential and allowing a new one to be created.
Check administrator access after the reset
Removing a user from the whitelist can also remove that user’s administrator role. If the player was an in-game admin before the reset, the role may no longer be present when they reconnect.

When the player should remain an admin
- Let the player complete the password reset and join successfully.
- Check the server’s normal administrator-management controls and confirm whether the account still has the intended role.
- Restore the admin role only if that access was deliberately granted before the reset.
- Ask the player to reconnect or otherwise refresh their session if your server’s permission change requires it.
Do not automatically restore elevated privileges simply because the player requested a password reset. Treat the role check as a separate authorization decision.
When the player was not an admin
No role restoration is needed. Confirm only that the player can authenticate with the new password and that unrelated users can still connect normally.
If console access is unavailable: edit the database safely
Some hosting panels do not expose a usable server console. In that case, you can clear the password field for one player directly in the server database. This is a recovery procedure, not a password-decoding technique: the encrypted value is removed so Project Zomboid can request a replacement.
1. Stop the server and make a backup
- Stop the Project Zomboid server from the hosting panel or service controls.
- Wait until the panel shows that the process has fully stopped. Editing a live database can be overwritten by the running server.
- Download a copy of the database and keep the original file unchanged as your rollback backup.
A commonly used filename is Zomboid/db/servertest.db. Your server may use another name, including a file such as dedicated.db. Use the database associated with this server and save the original before opening it.

2. Open the correct database in SQLite Browser
- Open the downloaded database file in SQLite Browser.
- Select the
Whitelisttable. - Locate the row for the player’s exact username.
Do not edit a similarly named database from another server, test instance, or backup directory. If the expected player row is not present, stop and verify the server path, filename, and username before making any change.
3. Clear only the password field
- In the target player’s row, select the password field.
- Remove the field’s value, leaving the rest of that row unchanged.
- Save the database changes in SQLite Browser.
Clear only the password value. Do not delete the entire row unless you intentionally want to remove the account record, and do not alter unrelated columns such as permissions or identity data. The goal is to preserve the player’s record while removing the credential that is no longer known.
4. Upload the edited file and restart
- Upload the saved database to the same server location from which the original was downloaded.
- Keep the backup in a separate local location until the player has completed the reset.
- Start the server again.
- Have the player connect with the same username and create a new password when prompted.
- Check the player’s access and restore an administrator role only if it was previously intended.
If the old password is still requested, stop before making additional edits. Confirm that the edited file was uploaded to the active server’s database path, that the server was restarted after the upload, and that the player used the exact username whose row you changed.

For a single forgotten password, use the console method whenever an authorized console is available. Use the database method only when the console route cannot be used and you can make a verified backup.

Understand filenames and hosting-panel paths
Instructions often mention servertest.db because it is a common Project Zomboid database filename, usually under Zomboid/db/. That name is not universal. A panel may create or expose a file named dedicated.db, or place the database under a host-specific directory.
- Follow the path shown for the server instance you actually run.
- Do not rename a database just to match an example.
- Do not upload an edited file to a similarly named test or backup directory.
- Keep the downloaded original until the new login has been tested.
The important identifier is the active server database, not the example filename. If your panel has separate file-manager areas for saves, configuration, and databases, select the database used by the running instance.

Why deleting the whole database is the wrong fix for one player
Deleting the complete database is sometimes described as a way to recover a forgotten built-in administrator password. That is a different problem from resetting one player’s whitelist password. A whole-database deletion affects every record stored there, including bans and player data.
Use that destructive recovery only when you deliberately need full administrator-account recovery and have accepted the consequences. It is not a shortcut for a single player’s forgotten password. For one account, remove that user’s whitelist entry through the console or clear only that user’s password field in a backed-up database.

Troubleshooting common failure points
The command is rejected or unavailable
- Check that you are in the Project Zomboid server console rather than a chat window or operating-system terminal.
- Confirm that your account has server-administrator permission.
- Verify the command spelling and the username, including capitalization and any spaces the game permits.
- Make sure the console belongs to the server where the player is trying to connect.
If you cannot obtain an authorized console, use the stopped-server database procedure instead of attempting undocumented commands.
The player still sees the old password prompt
Seeing a password prompt is expected; the reset does not log the player in automatically. The player must enter the same username and create a new password when Project Zomboid asks. If the game continues rejecting the new password, confirm that the command affected the intended username or that the edited database was uploaded to the active path before restarting.
The player cannot use former admin commands
The whitelist-removal route can remove the admin role. Check the role after the player has established the new password and restore it through your normal permission controls only when that privilege is still authorized.
The player row cannot be found in SQLite Browser
Do not create a replacement row based on guesswork. Recheck the exact username, database filename, and server directory. A missing row can indicate that you opened a different instance’s database or that the username supplied does not match the stored account.
The server will not start after a database edit
Stop further changes and restore the untouched backup you made before editing. Then verify that the database was saved by SQLite Browser and uploaded completely to the correct location. A backup gives you a known-good starting point while you recheck the file and path.

Operational checklist for administrators
- Identify the exact in-game username.
- Use the targeted console command when possible.
- Tell the player to reconnect with the same username and choose a new password.
- Check whether the account’s administrator role was removed.
- If console access is unavailable, stop the server before touching its database.
- Back up the database and edit only the target password field in the
Whitelisttable. - Use the actual database filename and path for your server; examples such as
servertest.dbanddedicated.dbare not interchangeable. - Restart, test the login, and retain the backup until the result is confirmed.
What the official guidance says

This guidance describes the same targeted outcome: remove the affected account’s database entry, then let the player reconnect with the original username and a new password. The in-game console command is the direct route when you have console access; editing only the password field is the file-based alternative when you do not.
Security considerations after recovery
A password reset changes the credential for one server account. It does not prove who is asking for the reset, so confirm the player’s identity through a channel your server community already trusts before changing an account. Never ask a player to send you a password they are currently using elsewhere, and do not publish database files or screenshots that expose account records.
Keep database backups private and label them with the server and date. Delete obsolete copies according to your normal retention policy once the reset is verified. If several accounts require recovery, handle them one at a time and test each username so that a typo does not affect the wrong player.
