To factory reset a Kids’ Fire tablet that opens normally, swipe down twice, tap Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults, then confirm. If Settings is unavailable or the tablet is frozen, use Recovery Mode instead. A reset removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, and deregisters the tablet from your Amazon account; you’ll need to register it again before using it.
Choose the reset method that fits the problem
| Method | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Settings | The tablet starts and you can open Settings. | Use the on-device menu to confirm the factory reset. Amazon’s reset instructions. |
| Recovery Mode | The tablet is frozen or you cannot open Settings. | Amazon gives the power-and-volume-down combination for most devices, not every model. Amazon’s Recovery Mode instructions. |
Reset the tablet from Settings
- If the tablet has expandable storage, safely eject it if needed.
- Swipe down twice from the top edge of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Device Options, then Reset to Factory Defaults.
- Confirm when prompted and allow the reset to finish.
Amazon says the reset removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, restores factory settings, and deregisters the tablet from the Amazon account. This describes content on the device; Amazon does not say that purchases are erased from the account itself. Register the tablet again to use it. Amazon: Factory Reset Your Fire Tablet.

Use Recovery Mode if Settings will not open
- Power the tablet off.
- On most Fire tablets, press and hold Power + Volume Down until Recovery Mode appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press the power button to select it.
- Confirm the reset when prompted.
Amazon qualifies the button combination as applying to “most devices,” so it may not work on every generation. If Recovery Mode does not appear or the controls differ, find the tablet’s model-specific instructions through Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help. A Recovery Mode reset also removes downloaded content and deregisters the tablet.
If you forgot a parental-controls password
Amazon says a forgotten parental-controls password requires a factory reset to restore full access. Do not assume this applies to every forgotten credential: Amazon distinguishes the parental-controls password from the lock-screen password. Its parental-controls guidance describes those controls as intended to restrict an adult profile for users 13 and older; children under 13 should be managed through child-profile settings. See Amazon’s parental-controls guidance.

What happens to the child profile and its settings?
Resetting the tablet and removing a child profile from the Amazon account are separate actions. Amazon says a profile removed through Parent Dashboard is no longer usable or visible on Amazon Kids-compatible devices; removing it from Amazon Family is a distinct process. A factory reset alone should not be treated as deleting the child’s account profile. See Amazon’s instructions for adding or removing a child profile.
Child-profile settings include age filters, content sharing, store access, web-history review, camera access, volume limits, and an optional child lock-screen PIN. After registering the reset tablet, review the child’s setup and reapply local choices as needed. Amazon’s guidance does not establish exactly which child-profile settings or cloud-synced information return automatically. Amazon: Child Profile Settings on Fire Tablet.
