How to Reset a Beats Pill and Fix Bluetooth Pairing Problems

If your Beats Pill will not connect, start with the least destructive reset: hold the center button for at least 10 seconds. This reset keeps saved Bluetooth devices and your custom speaker name. If that does not solve the problem, hold the center button and volume-down button together for at least 15 seconds to clear the speaker’s settings. After a successful reset, the pairing cue plays briefly and the status light flashes white. Turn Bluetooth on in your phone, tablet, watch, or computer and select Beats Pill.

The procedure below applies to the model Apple documents simply as Beats Pill. Do not assume the same button combination works on Beats Pill+ or another generation; identify the model first and use its own support instructions.

Choose the right reset before you start

There are two Apple-documented reset levels for Beats Pill. They are not interchangeable: one preserves the speaker’s stored identity, while the other clears its settings.

Reset Buttons and time What it preserves or clears When to use it
Settings-retaining reset Hold the center button for at least 10 seconds Keeps paired devices and the custom name Try this first when the speaker is behaving oddly but you want to retain its saved setup
Full settings reset Hold the center button and volume-down button together for at least 15 seconds Clears the speaker’s settings Use it when the first reset, forgetting the host pairing, and normal reconnection do not resolve the fault

A reset is different from simply putting the speaker into discovery mode. Discovery mode makes the Pill visible to a nearby device; a full reset removes the speaker’s stored configuration. If the speaker is still usable and you only need to connect a new phone, try discovery mode first.

Confirm the model and prepare both devices

Check that it is the documented Beats Pill model

Apple’s setup, reset, and repair pages cited for this procedure are specifically for Beats Pill. Beats Pill+ has separate support material, and the correct Pill+ reset sequence is not established here. Look at the name shown in your device list, the product label, or the paperwork that came with the speaker. If it says Beats Pill+ or identifies another generation, stop and consult that model’s documentation rather than experimenting with these button combinations.

Charge and power on

Charge the Pill and the phone, tablet, watch, or computer you are using. A low battery can make a speaker disappear from the Bluetooth list or shut down during a reset. Turn both devices on before testing a connection.

Put the host in a clean state

Keep the host device close to the speaker while you work. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance uses 30 feet as the maximum working distance and advises moving the speaker and host away from other Bluetooth devices, microwaves, routers, and other electronics. This is a troubleshooting limit, not a laboratory range claim.

How to reset a Beats Pill

Reset while keeping paired devices and the custom name

  1. Make sure the Pill has power and is available for button input.
  2. Press and hold the center button continuously for at least 10 seconds. Do not release early; count the full time.
  3. Release the button after the hold is complete.
  4. Watch and listen for the post-reset indication. When the speaker is reset and ready to pair, Apple says the pairing cue plays briefly and the light flashes white.
  5. On the host device, open Bluetooth and select Beats Pill if it appears. If the old connection remains listed but will not complete, use the forget-and-reconnect procedure below.

This is the appropriate first reset when preserving the saved pairing list and custom name matters. It does not replace the need to remove a corrupted or stale entry on the phone or computer; the speaker and the host each maintain their own Bluetooth information.

Reset the speaker and clear its settings

  1. With the Pill powered and within reach, press and hold the center button and the volume-down button at the same time.
  2. Keep both buttons pressed for at least 15 seconds. Releasing one button early can prevent the full reset.
  3. Release both buttons after the complete hold.
  4. Wait for the brief pairing cue and flashing white light that indicate the Pill is ready to pair again.
  5. On every host that previously used the speaker, remove the old Beats Pill entry, then pair it as a new device.

Use this level when the settings-retaining reset has failed, the host repeatedly reconnects to a broken entry, or you want to start with a blank speaker configuration. Because it clears settings, expect to establish the Bluetooth connection again.

Put the Pill into Bluetooth pairing mode

Turn the Pill on and look at its status light. If the light pulses to show discovery mode, leave the speaker near the host and open the host’s Bluetooth list. If the light does not pulse, press and hold the power button for three seconds. Then look again for Beats Pill in the available-device list.

Apple’s setup instructions cover iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, and Mac. The labels and menu layout can vary with the operating-system version, but the sequence is the same: enable Bluetooth, wait for Beats Pill to appear, and tap or click that entry.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings and select Bluetooth.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
  3. With the Pill in discovery mode, wait for Beats Pill under the available-device list.
  4. Tap Beats Pill and wait for it to move to the connected section.

If iPhone or iPad shows an old Beats Pill entry that fails immediately, do not keep tapping it. Forget that entry, put the speaker back into discovery mode, and select it again as a new device.

Apple Watch

  1. Open the watch’s Bluetooth settings.
  2. Enable Bluetooth if necessary.
  3. With the Pill powered and discoverable, select Beats Pill when it appears.

Keep the watch and speaker close during the first connection. If the watch continues to show a stale entry, remove it according to the watch’s current Bluetooth controls and repeat discovery mode.

Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the Bluetooth controls in Settings. On many versions this is under Connected devices, then Pair new device.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on and start a scan if the device list does not update automatically.
  3. Press the Pill’s power button for three seconds if its light is not pulsing.
  4. Choose Beats Pill from the available devices and accept any pairing prompt.

Android menu names differ by manufacturer and operating-system release. The essential checks are that Bluetooth is enabled, the Pill is actually discoverable, and you select the current Beats Pill entry rather than an obsolete saved record.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence when pairing fails

1. Verify power and charge

Confirm that the Pill is switched on and has charge. Confirm the same for the host device. A speaker that powers off during discovery cannot remain visible, and a phone or computer with very little power may stop Bluetooth activity. Charge both devices before making further changes.

2. Force discovery mode

Power the Pill on. If its status light does not pulse, hold the power button for three seconds. Return to the host’s Bluetooth page and wait for Beats Pill to appear. Do not begin a reset merely because the entry is not visible until you have confirmed that discovery mode was actually started.

3. Reduce radio interference and distance

Place the host within 30 feet of the speaker, preferably in the same room with a clear path between them. Move both away from other Bluetooth accessories, Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, and nearby electronics. Temporarily turn off or move competing Bluetooth devices if several are trying to connect at once. Once pairing succeeds, you can test a greater distance; during diagnosis, remove avoidable variables.

4. Check where sound is being sent

A Bluetooth connection can succeed while audio remains silent because the host is using another output. Open the host’s audio-output control and select Beats Pill. Raise the volume on both the host and the speaker. Test with a track downloaded to the device, as Apple recommends, so a streaming interruption is not mistaken for a speaker fault.

5. Forget the old pairing and reconnect

Removing the host’s saved record is especially useful when the Pill appears as connected but immediately disconnects, or when pairing worked previously and stopped after a change to the host.

  • Apple devices: Open Bluetooth settings, select the information control beside Beats Pill, choose the command to forget or remove the device, and confirm. Then return the Pill to discovery mode and select it again.
  • Android: Open Bluetooth or Connected devices, open the controls for the saved Beats Pill entry, choose Forget, Unpair, or Remove, and confirm. Start a fresh scan and pair again.
  • Mac: In Bluetooth settings, remove or forget Beats Pill from the saved devices list, then use discovery mode and Connect again.

Exact wording varies by platform and operating-system version. The important order is to remove the old host entry, make the speaker discoverable, and create a new pairing.

6. Reset at the appropriate level

If forgetting and reconnecting did not help, use the 10-second center-button reset when you want to preserve saved devices and the custom name. If the fault persists, use the 15-second center-plus-volume-down reset to clear settings. After either reset, wait for the pairing cue and flashing white light before attempting to connect. Then remove any obsolete host entry and pair again.

7. Test with one host before adding others

Once the Pill connects, test playback on that single device first. This separates a speaker problem from conflicts caused by several remembered hosts attempting to connect. Confirm that audio output and volume work, then add another host if needed.

Why a reset may not fix every Bluetooth problem

Bluetooth pairing involves two stored records: one in the Pill and one in the host device. A settings reset changes the speaker side, while forgetting a device changes the host side. If only one side retains a damaged record, the devices can continue to reject one another. That is why the reliable escalation order is discovery check, host forget, fresh pairing, then reset if needed.

Resetting also cannot repair a dead battery, damaged buttons, a failed radio, or a speaker component that powers down under load. It can clear configuration and pairing state, but it is not a hardware repair. Do not keep repeating resets when the Pill cannot stay powered or shows additional physical symptoms.

When to contact Apple Support or seek repair

Apple advises contacting Apple Support if reset problems continue. Its Beats Pill Repair Manual, published February 4, 2025, covers connectivity, mechanical issues, microphone problems, power faults, and speaker troubleshooting. The manual also lists parts, tools, and procedures, so a persistent fault can be assessed as a repair issue rather than treated as a Bluetooth setting.

Before contacting support, note which reset you tried, whether the light flashed white, whether the pairing cue played, which host platforms failed, and whether the Pill can connect to any other device. This information helps distinguish a host-specific pairing problem from a speaker-side failure. Do not apply the button sequence in this guide to Beats Pill+ or another generation unless its own documentation confirms it.

Do you need to buy anything?

No. Charging the existing speaker, checking discovery mode, correcting audio output, forgetting the old pairing, and using the documented resets are the appropriate first steps. Consider replacement only if the Pill is physically damaged, will not remain powered, or still fails after Apple Support or a repair assessment. A new purchase is not a substitute for clearing a stale Bluetooth record or selecting the correct audio output.

Final checklist

  • Confirm the product is the documented Beats Pill model.
  • Charge and power on both the speaker and the host.
  • Hold the power button for three seconds if the status light is not pulsing.
  • Keep the devices within 30 feet and away from likely interference.
  • Select Beats Pill as the host’s audio output and raise both volume controls.
  • Forget the old host pairing and create a new one.
  • Use the center-button reset for at least 10 seconds when preserving saved devices and the custom name.
  • Use the center-plus-volume-down reset for at least 15 seconds to clear settings.
  • Wait for the brief pairing cue and flashing white light before reconnecting.
  • Escalate continued reset, power, connectivity, microphone, mechanical, or speaker faults to Apple Support or repair.
