The most reliable way to research Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) is to start with its own filings, rebuild the economics of its three operating segments, test cash generation and balance-sheet capacity, and only then use analyst ratings as a record of outside expectations. That process can produce an independent valuation view even when a headline rating says only “buy,” “hold,” or “sell.”
The latest annual baseline is the company’s FY2025 Form 10-K. On October 13, 2026, the latest reported quarter visible in the reviewed official materials was Q2 2026, released July 28; a Q3 announcement was scheduled for October 27. The available information does not establish a current share price, consensus estimate, price target, or Q2 financial figures, so this is a repeatable research method rather than a live trading call.

What you are trying to learn before looking at a rating
A rating compresses an analyst’s assumptions into a label. Your job is to unpack those assumptions and decide whether the company can produce durable sales, margins, cash flow and returns at a price that compensates you for risk. For Sherwin-Williams, that means understanding how architectural paint, industrial coatings, distribution and acquisitions interact rather than treating the consolidated revenue line as a single business.
Use a written thesis with three parts: the operating change you expect, the evidence that should appear in filings, and the result that would disprove the idea. For example, an architectural-demand recovery should eventually show up in the relevant segment’s volume or comparable-sales measures, not merely in a higher consolidated result caused by pricing, currency or an acquisition. Put a time horizon beside every expectation so that a delayed recovery is not mistaken for a failed thesis or an indefinitely postponed success.

Start with the 10-K, then move forward through the 10-Q and 8-K
Sherwin-Williams makes its Form 10-K, Form 10-Q and Form 8-K reports available through its investor-relations site after filing or furnishing them to the SEC. Read them in that order because each document answers a different question.
| Document | What to extract | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 Form 10-K | Business description, segment structure, audited statements, debt, accounting policies, legal matters, risk factors and management’s discussion | Establish the annual baseline and definitions before interpreting quarterly changes |
| Latest Form 10-Q | Year-to-date sales and profit, working capital, liquidity, debt movements, contingencies and updated management discussion | Identify what changed after year-end and whether the annual thesis still fits |
| Latest earnings Form 8-K and release | Quarterly narrative, guidance and any adjusted measures | Compare management’s explanation with the filed numbers and reconcile adjustments to GAAP |
For every number, write down the period, unit, accounting basis and comparison period. “Adjusted EPS increased” is not interchangeable with “GAAP EPS increased.” Record the reconciliation and ask whether the adjustment is a recurring operating cost, a one-time acquisition item, a restructuring charge or a non-cash accounting effect. Quarterly filings supersede an older annual outlook when they provide newer information; read the latest filing before publishing or acting on a conclusion.
Understand how each segment makes money
Sherwin-Williams reports three operating segments. Analyze them separately before combining them because their customers, channels, margins and economic signals differ.

| Paint Stores Group | Company-operated specialty stores in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean serving architectural and industrial contractors and do-it-yourself homeowners | Store count, comparable or same-store sales where disclosed, price versus volume, contractor activity, mix and new-store or closure effects |
| Consumer Brands Group | Branded and private-label architectural paints and related products sold through third-party retailers and other channels, plus stores in Latin America | External demand versus intersegment transfers, retailer inventory, currency, product mix and margin changes |
| Performance Coatings Group | Industrial, automotive refinish, protective and marine, coil, packaging and other coatings sold worldwide through company branches and external channels | End-market volumes, raw-material pricing, geographic mix, industrial production, automotive activity and acquisition contribution |
Paint Stores Group
The FY2025 filing listed 4,853 Paint Stores Group locations at year-end. A store count is a capacity and distribution indicator, not proof of sales growth: compare it with comparable-store sales, sales per location, new-store investment and the cost of serving the network. Separate contractor demand from do-it-yourself demand when management provides that detail, because the two customers can respond differently to housing turnover, repair activity and discretionary spending.
Consumer Brands Group
The 2025 filing said approximately 63% of this group’s total sales were intersegment transfers, primarily sold through the Paint Stores Group. That percentage is crucial when reading the segment table. Segment revenue includes transfers inside the company, while consolidated revenue removes them. Do not add segment sales to estimate external demand; instead, follow the consolidated result and use the segment information to understand manufacturing, product mix and channel economics.

Performance Coatings Group
This segment spans several industrial markets, so a single growth rate can conceal divergent conditions. Break out automotive refinish, protective and marine, coil, packaging and other categories when the filing does so. Ask whether a change reflects end-market volume, customer destocking, price realization, mix, currency or an acquisition. A broad industrial recovery and a one-off price increase have different implications for future margins.
Separate price, volume, mix and acquisition effects
When a release provides a bridge, record each component instead of relying on the headline percentage. A useful worksheet has columns for reported sales change, organic volume, price, product or customer mix, currency, acquisitions and divestitures. If one component is not disclosed, mark it as not stated rather than inferring it from the total.

Sales can rise while profit falls if input costs, freight, labor, selling expenses or an unfavorable mix absorb the increase. Conversely, flat sales can produce higher profit through productivity or cost reductions, but that improvement may not persist if it comes from under-spending on stores, research or maintenance. Look for the same driver in the cash-flow statement and capital-expenditure discussion.
Use FY2025 figures as an anchor, not as a current quote
The FY2025 company report provides these audited or company-reported anchors:
| Measure | FY2025 amount or metric | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $23.574 billion | Consolidated revenue for fiscal 2025; inspect segment and external-sales composition |
| Diluted net income per share | $10.26 | GAAP diluted EPS for FY2025 |
| Adjusted diluted net income per share | $11.43 | Management-defined adjusted EPS; read the reconciliation to GAAP |
| Net operating cash flow | $3.452 billion | Cash generated by operations during FY2025 before investing and financing uses |
| Five-year adjusted EPS compound annual growth | 6.9% | Investor-overview metric through December 31, 2025; confirm its definition and starting point |
| Five-year average same-store sales growth | 5.6% | Investor-overview metric through December 31, 2025; do not treat it as a forecast |
| Five-year net operating cash | $14.3 billion | Investor-overview total through December 31, 2025; check the company’s definition and period |
These figures describe different concepts and should not be blended into one “quality score.” EPS includes non-cash charges, capital structure and share count; operating cash flow is affected by working capital; same-store sales describe a subset of the distribution model. Use them together only after checking periods, definitions and reconciliations.

Test earnings quality and cash conversion
Start with the relationship between net income and operating cash flow over several years, not a single quarter. Calculate operating-cash-flow-to-net-income = operating cash flow ÷ net income, then explain large movements using receivables, inventory, payables, taxes and other working-capital lines. A temporary inventory build can depress cash while supporting future shipments; a release can boost cash without improving demand.
Next, subtract capital expenditures to estimate cash available for acquisitions, dividends, repurchases and debt reduction. Add acquisition spending and debt service to your model rather than treating operating cash as freely distributable. The FY2025 report described operating cash as funding capital expenditures, acquisitions, dividends and repurchases. That statement describes allocation, not a guarantee that every use creates value.
Compare GAAP EPS growth with adjusted EPS growth. A widening gap requires a specific explanation and a judgment about recurrence. Track diluted shares as well: repurchases can lift EPS even when total net income is unchanged, while acquisition financing or equity issuance can dilute owners. The strongest thesis connects sales, operating profit and cash generation without relying on an expanding list of add-backs.
Examine capital allocation and balance-sheet capacity
Build a maturity schedule from the latest filing showing principal due, interest rate, fixed or floating terms, currency and refinancing date. Then model interest expense under higher rates and weaker operating profit. The FY2025 annual report expected 2026 interest expense to increase by approximately $85 million because of refinanced maturities, term-loan interest related to the Suvinil acquisition, headquarters and research-and-development-center costs, and higher refinancing rates. That was management’s forecast in the FY2025 report, not a verified 2026 outcome; replace it with the latest reported result when updating your work.
The investor overview listed 47 consecutive years of dividend increases, more than 50 acquisitions since 2000 and $14.3 billion of five-year net operating cash, all identified as of December 31, 2025. Treat those as leads for verification, not as a complete return analysis. Check dividend coverage, purchase prices, goodwill and intangible balances, integration costs, post-acquisition margins and whether debt reduction competes with repurchases.

For each capital-allocation decision, ask what alternative was available. A dividend may return cash predictably; a repurchase may be attractive only below a defensible intrinsic value; an acquisition may add capabilities but increase leverage and execution risk. Record management’s stated objective and compare it with subsequent cash returns and operating results.
Turn filing risks into testable scenarios
Read the 10-K risk factors and management discussion, then translate each material risk into a measurable scenario. Keep company-identified risks separate from your own inference about their financial effect.
- Demand: Model weaker housing, repair, contractor or industrial activity and specify which segment sales or volume measure should deteriorate.
- Inputs and pricing: Test raw-material inflation, freight and labor pressure against the company’s ability to retain price increases without losing volume.
- Mix and channels: Examine whether a shift toward lower-margin products, retailers or geographies changes segment profitability even when revenue is stable.
- Foreign exchange: Separate translation effects from underlying local-currency demand, especially in Latin American and other international operations.
- Environmental compliance and investment: Estimate the cash and capital spending required for regulation, facilities, research and product reformulation.
- Acquisition integration: Track promised synergies, customer retention, purchase-accounting amortization and debt paydown.
- Interest burden: Stress-test coverage if refinancing costs rise or operating profit falls.
For every scenario, write the trigger, the expected filing evidence, the time horizon and the disconfirming result. This prevents a macroeconomic narrative from becoming an untestable company “fact.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Value SHW independently when you have a dated price
No current share price, consensus earnings estimate or price target was established in the available material. Before making a valuation statement, retrieve a dated market price and the latest filed share count, earnings and debt figures. Record the source date beside every market input because a valuation can change materially without any operating update.
Price-to-earnings
Calculate separate multiples for GAAP EPS and adjusted EPS: P/E = share price ÷ specified EPS. Label the denominator and fiscal period. Do not compare a forward adjusted multiple for SHW with a trailing GAAP multiple for another company. Explain every adjustment and show how the multiple changes if EPS is lower, flat or higher than your base case.
Best Value
Enterprise-value lenses
Use enterprise value relative to operating earnings or cash flow when leverage, acquisitions or share-count changes make P/E incomplete. Define enterprise value consistently as equity value plus debt and other included claims minus cash, and use the same period and accounting basis for every company in a comparison. Reconcile operating cash flow to capital spending so that a cash-flow multiple is not inflated by unusually low investment.
Scenario-based discounted cash flow
A DCF is useful only when its assumptions are visible. Set out revenue growth by segment or as a consolidated range, operating margin, taxes, capital spending, working capital, acquisition spending, interest costs, terminal growth and discount rate. Present at least bear, base and bull cases, then show which assumption drives most of the value. A precise output is not evidence of precision in the inputs.
Peer comparisons
If you compare another coatings company, align fiscal periods, end-market and segment mix, organic volume versus price, segment margins, acquisition contribution, capital expenditure, cash conversion, debt, interest costs, dividends, repurchases and valuation denominator. Differences in accounting, leverage or business mix can make a lower multiple rational rather than a bargain.

Use analyst ratings as evidence about expectations
Collect the rating date, target horizon, earnings estimates, revenue and margin assumptions, valuation method and catalysts. A “buy” can reflect an assumption that margins will normalize; a “hold” can reflect a high share price despite good operations. Read the written estimate for what would cause a revision and compare that trigger with your filing-based indicators.
Construct an expectations table with the analyst’s forecast, your base case and the company’s disclosed result. Differences are useful only when you can explain them. If analysts expect volume recovery but the latest filing shows growth led by price, the disagreement is about the driver, not merely the number. Ratings should update your probability estimates; they should not replace a valuation you can reproduce.
A practical quarterly workflow
- Set the information date. Write the latest filing and earnings-release dates. As of October 13, 2026, Q2 2026 was the latest reported quarter in the reviewed official materials, with Q3 scheduled for October 27.
- Read the 10-K or latest 10-Q narrative. Mark new wording on demand, pricing, costs, acquisitions, litigation, liquidity and guidance.
- Populate a segment sheet. Enter sales, profit, margin, comparable-sales data and management’s stated drivers for each of the three segments.
- Reconcile measures. Tie adjusted EPS and other non-GAAP figures to GAAP and record the reason for every adjustment.
- Bridge cash. Start with operating cash flow, subtract capital expenditures, add acquisitions and note dividends, repurchases, debt issuance and repayment.
- Refresh the debt model. Update maturities, rates, cash, net debt and interest expense; compare actual costs with management’s prior forecast.
- Run scenarios. Change volume, price, mix, margins, currency, interest and terminal assumptions and note the valuation range.
- Review ratings last. Compare analyst assumptions with your evidence and list what would make either view wrong.
Common mistakes that produce a false thesis
- Reading only the headline EPS: It hides segment divergence, share repurchases and adjustments.
- Adding segment sales: Intersegment transfers, especially in Consumer Brands Group, mean segment totals are not external consolidated demand.
- Calling a forecast a result: The approximately $85 million 2026 interest increase was an FY2025 management expectation, not a reported outcome.
- Treating promotional metrics as independent evidence: Investor-overview growth and dividend-history figures are company-selected; verify definitions in filings.
- Ignoring cash costs of growth: Acquisitions, capital expenditures, integration spending and debt service reduce cash available to owners.
- Using an undated price: A valuation without the price date and source cannot be reproduced.
- Comparing mismatched companies: Different fiscal years, accounting measures, leverage and end markets invalidate a simple multiple ranking.
- Confusing a macro view with company evidence: Require a disclosed segment or operating measure that could confirm or disprove the thesis.
How to keep the analysis current
Set a review date after every 10-Q, 10-K and earnings release. Replace old guidance with the newest disclosure, preserve the prior forecast in a dated column and explain the variance. Before publishing a valuation, re-check the latest filing list, share count, debt, cash, operating results and management outlook. When Q3 results arrive after the scheduled October 27, 2026 announcement, update the quarter-specific evidence rather than carrying forward Q2 assumptions.
A durable SHW research file contains the source date, reported figures, segment drivers, GAAP reconciliations, cash bridge, debt schedule, scenario assumptions, valuation outputs and explicit disconfirming signals. That record lets you change your mind for a documented reason instead of reacting to the newest analyst headline.
