Start with Nvidia’s latest quarterly filing, then use its annual report to understand the business, financials and risks. Compare other AI-chip companies only after identifying their roles in the value chain, and assess valuation using market data recorded on the same date. This process helps separate a company’s growth story from the execution and expectations built into its stock price; it is not a buy or sell recommendation.
Start with filings, not the stock narrative
Company filings are the most direct place to check what a business sells, what management says is driving results, and what risks it has disclosed. They are management’s disclosures, not independent confirmation. Treat guidance and statements about future products, demand or capacity as expectations rather than guaranteed outcomes.

Separate shipments and constraints from demand
In its fiscal 2027 second-quarter Form 10-Q, Nvidia said Blackwell accounted for most system shipments, Vera Rubin shipments began in the third quarter, and the company was experiencing supply constraints. These disclosures help frame product transitions and the ability to meet demand. They do not, by themselves, establish how quickly customers will deploy systems or what future revenue will be.

Understand the $279 billion commitment figure
Nvidia reported $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026, up from $119 billion in the prior quarter. These are company commitments to secure supply and capacity—not revenue, backlog, or a guaranteed sales figure. Consider what could happen if demand estimates change, customers delay deployments, or supply and capacity plans do not match actual needs.
Check whether customers can put infrastructure in place
Chip availability is only one part of turning demand into sales. Nvidia says customers’ ability to deploy its AI infrastructure depends on such resources as land, power, data-center shells and financing. Its filing warns that a shortage of these or other resources could affect future revenue and financial performance, and that customers may delay purchases when infrastructure or capital is unavailable.
“The availability of land, power, shell, and capital is crucial to support the buildout of a full data center inclusive of NVIDIA AI infrastructure by our customers and partners, and any shortage of these or other necessary resources could impact our future revenue and financial performance.”

That is Nvidia’s statement in its fiscal 2027 second-quarter Form 10-Q, in the “Recent Developments, Future Objectives and Challenges” discussion. Read it as management’s risk disclosure, not as an independent forecast of customer construction or future sales.
Use the annual report to test the business behind the growth
Nvidia’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K is the starting point for understanding the company beyond its latest quarter. Read the relevant parts together: business description, management discussion and analysis, financial statements and notes, and risk factors. A single growth rate cannot show whether growth is producing durable profitability or requiring substantial resources and obligations.
- Revenue and margins: Track revenue mix and growth alongside gross and operating margins. Look for management’s explanation of changes and check whether the measures cover comparable periods.
- Cash generation and investment: Review operating cash flow and capital spending to understand how much cash the business generates and how much it invests.
- Inventory and supply obligations: Check inventory, commitments, guarantees and other disclosed obligations. Compare changes over time and read the accompanying notes.
- Customer and geographic exposure: Review disclosed concentration and regional exposure. Dependencies can matter even when reported sales are growing.
- Share-based compensation: Include it in your assessment of the company’s costs and shareholder dilution rather than treating it as irrelevant because it is non-cash in the period.
- Risks and market exposures: Read the company’s risk factors and market-risk disclosures alongside the figures they could affect.
Nvidia’s annual filing says semiconductor supply lead times may exceed 12 months. The company reports that it has experienced, and may continue to experience, extended lead times beyond that period. This is a disclosed supply risk, not a current estimate for every component.

Map AI-chip companies by where they sit in the value chain
“AI chip supplier” can describe businesses with very different economics. Before comparing companies, identify the role each plays and verify relationships in that company’s own filings. Do not assume a business is a direct Nvidia supplier simply because it operates in the semiconductor industry.

| Role to investigate | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Accelerator designer | Product roadmap, competition, software ecosystem and customer alternatives, including customers’ internal designs. |
| Custom-silicon and networking provider | Exposure to custom designs and networking, customer concentration, program or product transitions, and the economics of the business. |
| Foundry | Manufacturing capacity, process exposure, capital requirements, customer mix and dependence on demand from chip designers. |
| Memory or advanced-packaging provider | Capacity, supply constraints, customer exposure and how its products fit into system production. |
| Systems company | Ability to assemble and deliver complete systems, customer demand, component availability and deployment requirements. |
AMD is useful for examining a competing chip designer’s business and risks. Its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 27, 2025, filed February 4, 2026, discusses its AI GPU roadmap, semiconductor cyclicality and reliance on TSMC for production at certain advanced nodes. That dependence is relevant to AMD’s manufacturing exposure; it does not establish that every AI company has the same arrangement.
Broadcom’s annual reports and financial filings can help readers study custom-silicon and networking exposure. TSMC’s 2025 annual report provides a company-level view of foundry operations. Use those filings to investigate each company’s own customers, products, capacity and risks, rather than treating the companies as interchangeable or presuming a specific supplier relationship.

Compare financial resilience on a like-for-like basis
Once you have labeled each company’s role, compare its financial performance over the same or closely aligned fiscal periods. If reporting periods differ, state the difference rather than presenting the numbers as directly equivalent. Also check how each company defines a reported measure.
- Revenue growth and the portion of the business exposed to AI-related demand, using the company’s own segment definitions.
- Gross and operating margins, including how they change across periods.
- Operating cash flow, capital spending and resulting funding needs.
- Inventory, customer concentration, debt and other contractual obligations.
- Manufacturing reliance, capacity plans and the time or investment needed to bring products to market.
AMD’s annual filing warns that semiconductor markets are cyclical and subject to technology shifts, swings in supply and demand, price erosion and economic weakness. Apply that lens to each company’s disclosures; do not assume that exposure to AI removes the industry’s cyclical or execution risks.

Evaluate the stock price with dated, comparable inputs
Business quality and investment value are different questions. A company can perform well while its share price already assumes strong growth and margins. The filings described here do not establish synchronized current share prices, analyst estimates or comparable valuation multiples, so a current valuation conclusion requires fresh, consistently dated inputs.

- Choose one valuation date. Record the date beside every market price and estimate you use.
- Gather the same basic inputs for each company. Record share price, diluted shares, market capitalization, enterprise value, and the earnings, revenue and free-cash-flow figures used in your calculations.
- Label the period and basis. Distinguish trailing results from forward estimates, identify fiscal periods, and state the definitions used for free cash flow and other measures.
- Calculate and compare multiples consistently. P/E, EV/sales and free-cash-flow yield are useful only when their dates, periods and calculation methods are clear. A forward multiple depends on estimates, not reported results.
- Test what the price requires. Use scenarios to see how a slower growth rate or lower margin would change the results implied by the current price. Treat assumptions as assumptions, not forecasts.
A comparison of multiples taken on different dates or based on unexplained fiscal periods can create false precision. If you cannot align the inputs, describe the limitation instead of ranking the companies.
Turn risks into questions you can monitor
For Nvidia
- Can the company meet demand while managing disclosed supply constraints and commitments?
- Are customers able to finance and build the power, land and data-center capacity needed to deploy systems?
- What do its filings say about competition, export restrictions and regulatory limits?
- How do product transitions and supply dependencies affect the company’s ability to deliver?
For other companies in the value chain
- How concentrated are customers, and how much does the company depend on particular products or programs?
- Does production rely on another company, geography, process or capacity plan?
- What capital spending, inventory or other obligations accompany expansion?
- How could a product transition, downturn or change in customer demand affect margins and cash flow?
Use each company’s latest quarterly filing to update these questions, then return to the annual report for the fuller risk and financial context. A disclosed risk is not proof that a loss will occur; it is a reason to understand the possible effect and what evidence could change your view.
