How to Research Nine Dragons Paper Holdings Before Investing

Start with Nine Dragons Paper’s own FY2026 annual-results announcement, dated 23 September 2026, and check its official announcements index for that filing and anything published after it. The headline results show higher revenue and profit, but they do not by themselves establish whether the improvement is sustainable, cash-backed or worth the share price. Before making an investment decision, examine selling prices and product mix, operating cash flow, debt and investment needs alongside the profit figures.

1. Understand what Nine Dragons Paper does

Nine Dragons Paper (Holdings) Limited is a Hong Kong-listed producer of paper, pulp and packaging, stock code 2689. Its products include packaging grades such as kraftlinerboard, testlinerboard and corrugating medium, as well as printing and writing paper, specialty paper and pulp. It also operates downstream packaging businesses. The company describes recyclable paper as a major raw material and cites cogeneration, warehousing and logistics as operating supports. These are issuer descriptions; assess their financial effect in reported margins, cash flows and capital returns rather than assuming integration automatically creates an advantage. Gross profit RMB10,924.8 million Compare with revenue and prior periods to assess gross-margin movement.
Net profit RMB4,047.0 million Check the income statement and notes for items that affect the comparison with operating performance.
Profit attributable to equity holders RMB3,580.6 million This is the profit attributable to shareholders, distinct from total net profit.

Compare volume with price

FY2025 is a useful operating baseline. Revenue was approximately RMB63,240.5 million, up 6.3%; sales volume rose 9.6%, while average selling price fell 3.0%. Packaging paper accounted for approximately 90.0% of FY2025 revenue. These figures, from the company’s 2024/25 annual report, illustrate why an investor should separate tonnage growth from price realization and ask whether revenue growth translated into stronger gross margins. The FY2024/25 annual report is the comparison point.

Trace the source of profit changes

For each period, compare average selling prices, input costs, product mix and utilization with gross profit and margin. Then check whether changes in operating profit and net profit reflect the core business or other items disclosed in the accounts. Do not infer from higher revenue or net profit alone that the company has improved its unit economics or generated equivalent cash.

3. Distinguish capacity from actual output

At 30 June 2025, the company reported annual design capacity of approximately 23.5 million tonnes for paper and 7.5 million tonnes for fibre raw materials. The fibre figure comprised 4.7 million tonnes of wood pulp, 0.7 million tonnes of recycled pulp and 2.1 million tonnes of wood fibre. It also reported about 2.9 billion square metres of annual design capacity at downstream packaging plants. These are design-capacity figures—not actual production, sales or utilization rates—and they describe capacity at the report date rather than FY2026 output. The figures are in the company’s FY2024/25 annual report.

The company’s current overview describes ten paper manufacturing bases in mainland China and one in Vietnam; one pulp mill and one paper manufacturing base in Malaysia; and four pulp and paper mills plus one packaging plant in the United States. Geographic spread and vertical integration may affect supply, logistics and operating flexibility, but the investment case depends on results. Compare actual output and sales with capacity additions, capital spending, margins and cash generation; do not treat the footprint as proof of utilization or cost savings.

4. Test whether expansion is earning its funding

Paper and pulp production is capital-intensive. In the full FY2026 filing, compare cash flow from operations with capital expenditure, and track debt, interest expense, gearing and maturity disclosures. Then connect spending to project progress and ramp-up: capacity that has been announced or installed does not necessarily produce saleable output at attractive margins immediately.

  • Cash conversion: Compare operating cash flow with reported profit and examine working-capital movements, including inventories and receivables.
  • Investment: Separate maintenance spending from expansion where the filing provides enough detail. Assess whether additions correspond with demand, actual output and sales.
  • Funding: Track debt movements, gearing, interest costs and maturities against cash generation and planned spending.
  • Returns: Look for evidence that capacity and integration improve margins or cash generation over time, rather than assuming that greater scale is beneficial by itself.

5. Use the company’s risk disclosures as tests

The FY2024/25 annual report identifies risks that can be checked against later operating and financial results. Treat these disclosures as management’s stated risks, then look for evidence of their effect in subsequent filings.

Recovered fibre and other input costs

The report says China’s waste-import ban has intensified recovered-paper supply risk. Nine Dragons Paper says domestic recovered paper became its largest recovered-paper procurement source and describes expanding recycled pulp, wood pulp and wood fibre to replenish raw materials. Test whether these sources provide reliable supply at competitive cost by following input prices, sourcing disclosures, gross margins and production continuity. The company’s discussion appears in its FY2024/25 annual report.

New capacity, competition and selling prices

The report warns that simultaneous industry capacity expansion and import competition could create a short-term glut and pressure product prices. Compare that risk with average selling prices, sales volumes, gross margins, inventories and utilization in subsequent reporting periods. Higher sales volumes are not necessarily positive if prices or margins weaken.

Capital expenditure, leverage and interest costs

The company says expansion in raw materials and higher-end products can increase capital expenditure and financial risk, including gearing and loan interest costs. Compare actual spending and debt movements with operating cash flow, interest expense and project ramp-up. This shows whether expansion is being funded from operations, borrowing or a mix of sources.

Foreign exchange

The report identifies exposure from overseas operations and purchases of some raw materials and equipment overseas. It says most operations and transactions are in China and RMB and that the company has no hedge policy. That is management’s stated approach, not evidence that exchange-rate effects are immaterial; check financial statements and notes for reported currency effects.

Weather and environmental transition

The company identifies extreme weather as a possible disruption to input supply, power generation and plants or equipment. It also cites environmental rules, carbon quotas or pricing and clean-energy requirements as potential cost and investment factors. Check later compliance disclosures, reported incidents, policy developments and decarbonization spending. The company’s stated slogan, “No Environmental Management, No Paper Making,” is corporate language, not an independent audit or performance measure.

6. A practical filing-by-filing research sequence

  1. Open the latest results: Use the official announcements index to locate the 23 September 2026 annual-results filing and check for later announcements. Read the full filing, not just a results headline.
  2. Build a comparable-period record: Put revenue, sales volume, average selling price, gross profit, margins and profit attributable to shareholders side by side. Use the FY2024/25 annual report as an earlier baseline, while checking that accounting periods and definitions match.
  3. Follow cash and balance-sheet funding: Review operating cash flow, capital expenditure, working capital, debt, interest expense and maturities. Compare them with earnings and the company’s expansion plans.
  4. Check capacity and mix: Distinguish design capacity from actual output and sales. Examine product and segment information where available; FY2025’s approximately 90.0% packaging-paper revenue share makes packaging-paper pricing and margins especially relevant.
  5. Revisit disclosed risks: For fibre supply, competition, funding, foreign exchange and environmental exposure, look for subsequent evidence in the accounts, operating discussion and risk disclosures rather than assuming a stated mitigation has worked.
  6. Only then consider valuation: This information supports business due diligence, not a buy or sell conclusion. A valuation also requires a current share price, a clearly stated method and assumptions about future cash flows, risk and capital needs.

What the available figures do not establish

The FY2026 headline results and FY2025 operating baseline do not by themselves establish the company’s current valuation, future earnings, dividend yield, cash conversion or the success of new capacity. The detailed FY2026 filing and any announcements after 23 September 2026 should be checked before drawing those conclusions. The capacity figures cited above are from 30 June 2025 and cannot be used as FY2026 actual output.
