How to Research Nigerian Stocks Before Investing: Financials, Valuation and Risk

To research a Nigerian stock before investing, start with the issuer’s published financial statements and material announcements, then check its NGX filing and compliance status, test whether its reported earnings turn into cash, and value it using inputs that match the same reporting period and share count. Finally, consider whether the shares can be traded at a reasonable price and whether you can tolerate the company’s business and financial risks. This is a research framework, not a recommendation to buy or sell.

Where can you find NGX company financial statements?

Begin with Nigerian Exchange Limited’s X-Compliance Report. It includes categories for released financials, audited-account and quarterly filers, and a range of compliance alerts. Use it to locate disclosures and identify questions to investigate; do not assume its list is a complete archive or that a displayed filing is the latest available for an issuer.

NGX says periodic financial disclosures and ongoing material-event disclosures should be released to the exchange in a timely manner. Its listing-requirements summary describes continuing reporting obligations and IFRS accounting, but it is a summary rather than a substitute for the current rules or the issuer’s filings. The NGX X-Compliance and listing-requirements pages were accessed on 4 October 2026; filing status and applicable requirements can change.

For historical orientation, NGX’s X-Factbook describes listed-company profiles, five-year financial performance, corporate-action history, market statistics and index-performance information. It is an annual reference with paid modular subscriptions, not necessarily a free or exhaustive source. Confirm important figures in the issuer’s statements or an appropriate current market-data source.

Gather the latest available audited annual statements, subsequent interim statements and material announcements. Record each document’s reporting period and publication date. If a statement is missing, late or difficult to reconcile with a later announcement, treat that as an unresolved information risk rather than filling the gap with an unsourced summary.

How should you analyse a company’s financials?

Read several years of results alongside the latest interim period. A single strong or weak year may reflect a temporary event; the longer view helps show whether revenue, margins, cash generation and debt are moving consistently. Build a simple record of the following items for each period:

  • Revenue, operating profit, finance costs, tax and net income.
  • Cash from operations, capital expenditure, cash balances and borrowings.
  • Receivables, inventories and other material working-capital movements.
  • Equity, shares outstanding, dividends and announced corporate actions.

Compare profit with cash generation

Profit reported in the income statement is not the same as cash received. Compare operating cash flow with net income over multiple periods, then look for explanations in changes to receivables, inventories, payables and other working-capital items. Persistent divergence is a reason to investigate the notes and business context; by itself, it does not prove misconduct.

Check debt, liquidity and resilience

Assess borrowings alongside cash, finance costs, operating performance and the company’s ability to meet near-term obligations. Rising debt or finance costs can make a business more vulnerable to weaker trading or funding pressure. Consider whether working capital is absorbing cash and whether the company depends heavily on a small number of products, customers or revenue sources.

Read the notes and announcements

Review accounting policies, related-party transactions, contingent liabilities, segment information and events after the reporting period. Read announcements about material events, financing, acquisitions, changes in share capital and dividends alongside the financial statements. A headline profit figure alone will not show every obligation, concentration or change that could affect the business.

Reconcile per-share figures with corporate actions

Rights issues, placements, bonus issues, splits and other changes can alter the share count used in per-share earnings, market capitalisation and dividend-yield calculations. Check the issuer’s actual notices and current share data before making those calculations. NGX’s X-Factbook lists corporate-action history as one of its features, but confirm consequential figures against the relevant issuer notice and current data.

How do you know if a Nigerian stock is cheap?

No single multiple establishes that a share is cheap. First define the earnings, book value or operating measure being used; identify the period it covers; verify the share count; and use a market price with a clear date. Then compare the result with relevant listed peers and the company’s own history.

Measure When it may help What to check
Price-to-earnings (P/E) When earnings are positive and reasonably representative. Use a clearly defined earnings period and consistent share-count and price inputs. One-off earnings can make the multiple misleading.
Price-to-book (P/B) When balance-sheet value is meaningful for the business being assessed. Consider the quality and relevance of the assets and liabilities behind book value.
Enterprise value to operating earnings When comparing businesses with relevantly similar operations and financial structures. Use consistent operating-earnings definitions and account for differences that affect comparability.
Dividend yield When a dividend has been declared and appears sustainable. Use the relevant share price and declared dividend, and assess whether earnings and cash generation support the payout.

These are general analytical tools, not valuation rules prescribed by NGX. The NGX materials reviewed do not set a universal fair-value formula or provide a current market-wide valuation benchmark.

Make comparisons fair

Compare businesses with similar economics, not just similar labels. Align fiscal periods, currencies, share counts and the date of market prices. Account for one-off items and relevant inflation, accounting or currency context when they affect comparability. Historical market and company information in the NGX X-Factbook can provide context, but confirm issuer-level inputs and current prices before relying on them.

A lower multiple may reflect weaker growth prospects, governance concerns, poor cash conversion, balance-sheet risk or limited trading liquidity rather than a bargain. If you build a scenario or target value, show the assumptions and how the result changes when earnings, margins, growth, discount rates or currency-related costs change. Treat an estimate as an estimate, not as a fact established by exchange materials.

What risks should you check before investing?

Filing and compliance signals

The NGX X-Compliance Report includes categories for early and delinquent audited-account filers, delinquent quarterly filers, companies operating below listing standards, free-float deficiencies, breaches, enforcement actions and companies slated for delisting. Check relevant alerts against the underlying exchange notice and company disclosure before drawing a conclusion. NGX states that it does not guarantee the report’s accuracy or reliability and accepts no liability for decisions based on it.

Trading liquidity and price freshness

Review current traded volume and value, trading frequency, free float and bid–ask conditions where available. A displayed last price does not guarantee that a trade can be completed at that price, particularly where trading is limited. NGX’s X-DataPortal describes market-data access and reports; its page, accessed 4 October 2026, says free access includes seven days of historical price data and a Top Ten Brokers Performance report. Portal features, terms and data freshness may change, so verify them directly before relying on the service.

Business, balance-sheet and shareholder risks

Consider the company’s exposure to cyclical demand, concentrated customers or products, input and funding pressures, and currency-related costs where relevant. Assess leverage and cash generation together, not in isolation. Review dilution, corporate actions, dividend capacity, related-party dealings and any governance or enforcement concerns disclosed by the issuer or exchange.

How do you turn the information into a decision?

  1. Identify the issuer and reporting periods. Use NGX X-Compliance to find available disclosures, then verify the relevant filings and announcements with the issuer. Record the statement periods and publication dates.
  2. Build a multi-period financial picture. Track revenue, margins, profit, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt, cash, working capital and equity across annual and interim statements.
  3. Check share-count and shareholder changes. Reconcile current shares outstanding with rights issues, placements, bonus issues, splits and other corporate actions before calculating per-share measures.
  4. Choose and align valuation inputs. Select a measure suited to the business, state its earnings or book-value basis, and match the reporting period, share count and market-price date.
  5. Compare the business, not only its multiple. Assess relevant peers and the company’s own history, while accounting for differences in growth, cash generation, leverage, governance and liquidity.
  6. Check execution and disclosure risks. Review compliance alerts and current trading conditions, then verify material concerns against the underlying notices and filings.
  7. Write down what would change your view. State the main assumptions and risks, and identify what new results, announcements or price changes would require you to reassess the analysis.

How do you buy through the Nigerian market?

NGX says an investor seeking to trade in the primary or secondary market must appoint a securities dealer or stockbroker that is a registered NGX Trading License Holder. Verify the dealer’s current registration and account-opening requirements before funding an account; the dealer’s KYC process and procedures should be confirmed directly.

NGX identifies the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) as the licensed central depository, clearing and settlement institution. Holdings may be domiciled there through the appointed dealer or a licensed custodian. Confirm current procedures with official sources rather than relying on old account-opening instructions.
