How to Research a Startup Featured at a Technology Conference

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

A conference appearance is a lead, not independent due diligence. To decide whether a featured startup is legitimate or worth pursuing, identify its legal entity and jurisdiction, verify founders and claims with sources outside the company, inspect the product in operation, and request evidence of customers, revenue, funding and partnerships. If money is involved, examine the specific investment offer and the person soliciting it; early-stage and pre-IPO investments can lose all of your capital.

What a conference feature actually tells you

Being listed by a technology event can mean several different things: the company may rent an exhibit, enter a pitch competition, be selected for a demonstration, appear in an investor directory, sponsor a program or simply be mentioned by a speaker. Those roles are not interchangeable. A listing tells you that the company was visible to the event’s audience under that event’s rules. It does not, by itself, establish honest marketing, a working product, paying customers, sound finances, regulatory compliance or investment merit.

Event operators describe materially different processes:

Program or event What it publishes about participation What you can reasonably infer What still requires separate verification
CES Investor Partnership Program Qualified investors can view company and funding information supplied by exhibitors seeking investment. The fields include stage, funding sought, fundraising timeline, revenue and pitch materials. The page reports that more than 1,000 CES 2026 exhibitors shared funding information with the program. The exhibitor chose to provide information through that program and may be seeking investors. The accuracy of each profile, the quality of the company and the suitability of any investment. The 1,000-plus figure is a participation count published by the event, not a success or quality statistic.
SXSW Pitch Applications and finalist rules for the referenced edition include company-registration and founder-ownership conditions, along with product-category and other limits. The applicant or finalist met the published eligibility and selection requirements for that edition. Independent confirmation of its claims, customers, economics, security or investment prospects. Rules can change by edition.
Finovate product demos Finovate describes a competitive selection process and live demonstrations of products. An attendee may be able to see the product operate and the company passed that program’s selection process. Whether the demonstration reflects the normal product, whether customers pay, and whether adoption, security, economics and legal claims are sound.
Global Capital Network events Its disclaimer says featured companies and people are not vetted for investment merit or endorsed, and that event presence is not due diligence. For that operator, the disclaimer expressly limits what the feature means. Do not assume every conference uses exactly the same policy; read the current event’s own terms.

Use the current event page for the edition you attended. A process described for one year or one program should not be generalized to every conference.

Step 1: Preserve exactly what the event claimed

Save the event page, exhibitor listing, speaker profile, pitch page, investor-program entry and any downloadable deck while they are available. Record the event name, edition, dates and the URL. Copy the wording used to describe the startup rather than paraphrasing it later.

  1. Classify the appearance. Mark whether it was an exhibitor, pitch contestant, finalist, selected demo company, sponsor, investor-directory participant or speaker mention.
  2. Record the claim and its owner. Note which statements came from the startup, the event operator or a third party. A company’s own profile and a conference-hosted profile are still claims to corroborate.
  3. Check timing. Keep the publication date and event edition beside every figure. Funding, staff, customers and product status can change quickly.
  4. Separate visibility from validation. Put event selection in your notes as a discovery fact, never as a diligence conclusion.

Step 2: Identify the legal entity before checking reputation

Ask the founders for the company’s full legal name, jurisdiction of formation, operating subsidiaries and official website. Match those details to the conference listing, invoices, contracts, privacy policy and contact information. A brand name may differ from the entity that owns the product or signs a customer agreement.

  • Confirm the jurisdiction before choosing a corporate registry, securities regulator or intellectual-property database. There is no single registry that applies worldwide.
  • Check whether the entity is active, dissolved, renamed or operating through a different subsidiary.
  • Ask who owns the relevant code, patents, trademarks, data and customer contracts.
  • For procurement, identify the contracting entity, governing law, support location and insurance requirements.
  • For journalism or partnership work, document the entity and each executive’s stated role so similarly named companies are not confused.

If the startup will not provide a legal name or keeps changing the entity that supposedly owns the product, pause before sharing confidential information, signing a contract or sending money.

Step 3: Corroborate founders and company claims independently

Start with biographies, then verify the important assertions somewhere the startup did not control. Look for records from prior employers, universities, patent offices, award organizers, customers, regulators or original partners. An impressive profile can be accurate, incomplete or presented without the context needed to judge it.

Founder and leadership checks

  • Confirm each founder’s name, current role and employment dates where those details matter.
  • Test prior-company claims against the prior company’s own announcements or reliable public records. Distinguish founding, employment, advisory work and an acquisition event.
  • Check awards at the organizer’s site and read the category, year and judging conditions.
  • Verify patents by the named owner and inventor; a patent application is not the same as a granted, enforceable patent or a commercially useful invention.
  • Ask who is responsible for security, finance, compliance and customer support. A founder’s title does not prove that those functions exist.

Partnership and funding checks

Find the original announcement from the alleged partner or investor. Check the date, legal entity, scope and whether the relationship is a paid pilot, reseller arrangement, integration, grant, letter of intent or equity investment. “Partner” can describe anything from a technical integration to a signed distribution contract; ask which one applies.

For funding, request the round date, instrument, amount raised, lead investor and issuer. Compare the claim with an investor announcement, a regulatory filing where applicable or a statement from the named investor. Treat an event-provided funding profile as a starting point; the CES program specifically says its company and funding information is supplied by exhibitors seeking investment.

Step 4: Inspect the product, not just the pitch

Request a live walkthrough of the core workflow. A useful demonstration lets you see inputs, processing, outputs, error handling and the boundaries of what the system can do. Slides and a promotional video can explain a vision, but they cannot establish how the product behaves for a normal user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask for the normal path. Have the presenter complete the task a customer would perform, using representative data rather than a pre-rendered video.
  2. Test one edge case. Ask what happens when data is incomplete, a third-party service is unavailable or a user makes a common mistake.
  3. Clarify availability. Label each capability as generally available, limited beta, private pilot, prototype or planned.
  4. Identify dependencies. Ask which parts rely on external APIs, human review, licensed data, special hardware or a founder’s manual intervention.
  5. Request documentation. For a serious evaluation, ask for security architecture, service levels, data-retention terms, integration requirements and a trial environment appropriate to the product.

Keep four stages separate in your notes:

  • Functioning demo: the feature worked during the presentation.
  • Pilot: a limited deployment with a test user or organization.
  • Paying customer: a customer has paid under an identifiable agreement.
  • Repeatable traction: the company can acquire and retain customers at economics that work beyond one-off projects.

Finovate’s live-demo format can help you observe a product, but a successful demonstration or competitive selection does not prove sales, retention, security or commercial viability.

Step 5: Verify customers, revenue and adoption

Ask the startup to distinguish design partners, free users, trial accounts, pilots, paid contracts and renewed contracts. Request customer references with permission and appropriate confidentiality. A logo on a slide may represent a conversation, integration or historical customer rather than current paid use.

Questions for customer evidence

  • Who is the buyer and what problem did the product replace or improve?
  • When did the customer start using it, and is the agreement still active?
  • What is paid: subscription, usage, implementation, hardware, advertising or another model?
  • How many customers pay today, and how many renewed or expanded?
  • Can the customer describe measurable results without disclosing confidential information?

For revenue claims, ask for the period, accounting basis and whether the number includes services, grants, one-time setup fees or bookings that have not been collected. “Pipeline,” “annual contract value” and “revenue” are different measures. Do not convert one into another.

Step 6: Test the business model and market story

Map the business from problem to payment. Ask who has the problem, how it is solved today, who approves a purchase, how the startup reaches buyers, how pricing is calculated and what makes the product difficult to replace. Then compare those answers with customer evidence and credible alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Market-claim checklist

  • Request the source and publication date for every market-size estimate.
  • Check whether the figure describes the company’s actual segment or a much larger adjacent market.
  • Ask what assumptions convert total market size into reachable customers and expected revenue.
  • Identify competitors, internal tools and “do nothing” alternatives, not just companies the pitch deck names.
  • Ask how gross margin, sales cycle, implementation cost and support burden affect the model.
  • For regulated or safety-sensitive products, identify the approvals, audits or certifications required before deployment.

No single metric decides whether a startup is sound. A large market estimate cannot compensate for weak customer proof, and a prestigious customer cannot by itself prove a repeatable business.

Step 7: If you are considering an investment, examine the offer separately

Investment diligence has two subjects: the security and the person or firm offering it. Identify the issuer, instrument, price or valuation method, rights, fees, minimum investment, transfer restrictions, reporting obligations and expected liquidity. Obtain the actual offering documents rather than relying on a conference conversation or presentation.

  1. Name the instrument. Determine whether it is stock, a note, a revenue-share agreement, a convertible instrument, a fund interest or another security.
  2. Identify the solicitor. Record the legal name and regulatory status of the person or firm asking for money. A founder, broker, platform and introducer may have different roles.
  3. Read the disclosures. Review use of proceeds, conflicts, dilution, liquidation preferences, voting rights, fees and financial statements where provided.
  4. Assess liquidity. Ask whether resale is restricted, whether any secondary market exists and what happens if the company never lists or is acquired.
  5. Verify independently. Contact the named issuer and professionals through details obtained independently of the pitch.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov alert on pre-IPO investment scams warns that a company may never go public, a resale market may never develop and an investor can lose the entire investment. That is general U.S. investor education, not a finding about any particular conference company or a substitute for legal or financial advice.

Step 8: Treat recruitment-led promises as a warning sign

Some offers emphasize recruiting new participants more than selling a product to genuine end users. Others promote products or services that are difficult to value, making it hard to tell whether money comes from customers or new entrants. Investor.gov identifies those characteristics as warning signs associated with pyramid schemes and explains that such pitches can appear at conferences and other venues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the warning signs to ask better questions, not to declare that a particular company is illegal:

  • What percentage of revenue comes from sales to people who are not participants?
  • Can a customer buy the product without joining, recruiting or making an investment?
  • What are typical participant costs, refunds, cancellations and net results after expenses?
  • Is compensation primarily tied to verified retail sales or to bringing in new members?
  • Can the company explain a product’s value using ordinary market comparisons?

Compare two or more conference startups on the same axes

When several companies attract your attention, use one worksheet and identical questions. A consistent comparison prevents the most polished presentation from dominating your judgment.

Dimension Evidence to record Decision question
Product maturity Live workflow, release status, dependencies, limitations and documentation Does the demonstrated capability work in the form a customer can actually use?
Customer proof Named or referenceable customers, paid status, renewal or expansion evidence Is there independent evidence of use and value?
Legal identity Entity name, jurisdiction, ownership, founders and contracting party Can you identify who is responsible for the product and obligations?
Business model Buyer, pricing, sales route, costs, competition and market-source dates Is there a credible path from problem to sustainable payment?
Claim quality Original sources, dates, scope and consistency across statements Which important assertions remain uncorroborated?
Investment terms Instrument, issuer, solicitor, valuation, rights, restrictions and liquidity What can you lose, and how could you exit?

This is a practical framework, not a validated scoring system. Keep unresolved items visible instead of awarding points for missing information.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming selection equals endorsement

Problem: You treat a finalist badge or investor-directory listing as proof of quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Record the exact eligibility or selection process, then run independent checks on the entity, product, customers and claims.

Accepting a scripted demo as customer evidence

Problem: A polished stage presentation is counted as proof of production use.

Correction: Request the normal workflow, an edge case and a customer reference. Label the result as a demo until paid use is documented.

Repeating a funding or partnership headline

Problem: You quote a conference profile without checking who supplied it or what the relationship means.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Find the original investor or partner announcement, identify the instrument or agreement, and record the date and scope.

Ignoring entity or jurisdiction changes

Problem: You search the wrong company name or registry and conclude that records do not exist.

Correction: Obtain the full legal name, formation jurisdiction and operating entities first.

Focusing on the company while neglecting the seller

Problem: You investigate the startup but not the person or firm soliciting an investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Verify both the offering and the solicitor, read the documents and assess transfer restrictions and total-loss risk.

A conference-to-diligence worksheet

Complete these fields before making a procurement, partnership, publication or investment decision:

  • Event, edition, dates and exact participation role
  • Saved event URL and wording of the company’s claims
  • Full legal entity, jurisdiction and contracting party
  • Founder names, roles and independently checked biographies
  • Product status, live-test notes, dependencies and unresolved limitations
  • Customer categories, paid-use evidence, references and renewal information
  • Revenue period and definition; funding date, amount, instrument and source
  • Partnership scope, original announcement and current status
  • Buyer, pricing, route to market, competitors and market-claim sources
  • For an investment: issuer, solicitor, instrument, terms, fees, restrictions and liquidity
  • Open questions, documents requested, dates followed up and the reason for any final decision

Stop and escalate when the company refuses to identify its legal entity, will not explain what is actually available, supplies only unverifiable customer or funding claims, pressures you to invest immediately or makes recruitment central to the offer.

Keeping the assessment current

Event criteria, company status and securities guidance change. Recheck the current edition’s rules, the appropriate registry and regulator for the startup’s jurisdiction, and the latest offering documents immediately before acting. Public information can inform diligence, but it does not complete it.
