How to research a jewellery company before investing in its shares

The safest way to research a listed jewellery company is to begin with its latest annual filing, then test the business model against several years of financial statements, interim reports, inventory data, supplier disclosures, commodity exposure, seasonality and sourcing claims. This process can tell you what the company sells, how it makes money, where cash is tied up and which risks management considers material. It cannot, by itself, prove that the shares are cheap or suitable for you.

Use the workflow below to turn a filing into an investment case. Confirm the issuer and share class first, understand its channel and product economics, reconcile profit with cash and working capital, and compare only companies reported on consistent periods and definitions.

1. Establish exactly which issuer you are researching

Start with the legal name, ticker, exchange, listing jurisdiction, reporting currency, fiscal year-end and share class shown in the company’s latest official filing. A familiar brand name can conceal a parent company, a subsidiary, multiple share classes or a foreign issuer whose fiscal calendar differs from the calendar year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the identity data

  • Legal issuer and ticker symbol.
  • Primary exchange and country of incorporation.
  • Reporting currency and fiscal year-end.
  • Ordinary shares, depositary receipts or other class being considered.
  • Date of the latest annual report and the latest interim report.
  • Basic and diluted shares outstanding, including options or other potential dilution.

Save the annual filing and at least two prior annual reports, plus the most recent interim filing. Read the business description, risk factors, management discussion, financial statements and accounting notes together. A headline revenue increase can mean something very different when it comes from store openings, acquisitions, price inflation, currency translation or a shift toward lower-margin products.

Map the operating model before looking at valuation

Classify the issuer by what it actually does rather than by its marketing language. Jewellery companies may combine several of these activities:

Model What to look for in filings Typical questions
Branded retail Owned stores, concessions, repairs and service plans How productive are stores, and how much sales depend on promotions or holiday traffic?
E-commerce Online sales, digital acquisition costs, fulfilment and returns Are online sales incremental, or are customers moving from stores to a different channel?
Wholesale Sales to retailers, department stores or independent jewellers How concentrated are customers, and who controls pricing and inventory?
Design and manufacturing Internally designed products, factories, contractors and production capacity Does the company capture design margin, and what labour or production risks does it carry?
Precious-metal exchange or services Gold-buying, repair, warranties and other non-jewellery revenue Are these recurring services, or do they rise and fall with metal prices and consumer behaviour?

Segment and channel labels are not standardized. Read each issuer’s definitions before putting two percentages side by side.

2. Build a multi-period financial picture

Create a five-year worksheet where the filings provide enough history, then add every available quarter or half-year. Track revenue, comparable or same-store sales, gross margin, operating margin, earnings, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, working capital, inventory, debt, liquidity and share count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate growth from its causes

For each period, annotate whether growth came from higher units, higher average selling prices, new locations, acquisitions, foreign exchange, a change in product mix or a one-off event. A jewellery company can report higher revenue while selling fewer pieces if gold prices rise. Conversely, unit demand can grow while revenue is flat if the mix shifts toward lower-priced products.

Read margin notes, not just margin percentages

Signet Jewelers’ fiscal 2026 Form 10-K says gross margin is affected by pricing, promotional activity, merchandise costs, sales mix, foreign exchange and services such as repairs and extended service plans. It also explains that average-cost inventory accounting can delay the effect of cost movements in reported margins. Therefore, a margin change should be investigated through product mix, markdowns, input costs and accounting timing before it is treated as evidence of a stronger or weaker underlying business.

Test profit conversion

  • Compare operating cash flow with net income over several periods.
  • Explain large changes in receivables, payables and inventory.
  • Separate maintenance capital expenditure from expansion spending where the filing permits.
  • Check whether acquisitions, lease liabilities or supplier-financing arrangements obscure leverage.
  • Reconcile diluted share count with earnings per share; buybacks can lift per-share results while total earnings stagnate, and stock awards can create dilution.

Use the notes to identify non-GAAP measures and reconcile them to audited figures. Management’s adjusted profit may be useful for trend analysis, but recurring costs should not be dismissed merely because they are excluded from an adjusted metric.

3. Investigate inventory and supplier exposure

Inventory is often the central balance-sheet question for a jewellery retailer. Determine what the company owns, what it holds on consignment, what is displayed in stores, what is held in distribution centres and what can be ordered from a supplier only after a customer purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask how inventory is measured

  • Identify the costing method, such as average cost or another permitted method.
  • Check provisions for markdowns, obsolescence, shrinkage and damaged goods.
  • Calculate inventory turnover or days inventory when comparable figures are available.
  • Compare inventory growth with sales growth and with movements in gold or gemstone prices.
  • Read purchase commitments, supplier payment terms and any inventory financing disclosures.

A rising inventory balance can fund planned store growth, reflect deliberate buying ahead of metal-price increases or signal slower demand. The balance alone does not distinguish those cases; use turnover, markdowns, cash flow and management’s explanation.

Look for concentration and control points

Signet describes virtual inventory and identifies merchandise and supplier management as important risks. That model requires you to understand which goods are physically owned, which are available through supplier systems and when the company records a sale or inventory commitment.

Birks Group’s Form 20-F for the fiscal year ended March 28, 2026, reports that most inventory is kept on store display. The same filing says merchandise from its largest luxury timepiece supplier represented approximately 22% of total net sales in FY2026. That is a Birks-specific concentration disclosure, not a sector benchmark. For any issuer, check whether a supplier is economically important even when it is not separately named.

Assess supplier resilience

Map major sourcing countries, manufacturing partners, logistics routes and alternative suppliers. Examine risks from tariffs, sanctions, currency movements, labour disruption, transport interruptions and minimum-order commitments. A company with many nominal suppliers may still rely on a small number of refiners, stone processors, watch houses or branded licensors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Stress-test precious-metal, gemstone and labour costs

Read the filing for exposure to gold, silver, diamonds, coloured stones, labour, energy and foreign exchange. Then look for the mechanisms management can use to respond: price increases, hedging, purchase agreements, product redesign, substitution, changes in karat or stone size, and sourcing from different regions.

Model the pass-through problem

Higher metal prices can increase the ticket price of a piece, but a higher ticket may reduce unit demand. If the company holds inventory bought before the price move, accounting margins may initially benefit; if it buys at higher prices and cannot reprice quickly, margins and cash can suffer. Build at least three cases in your worksheet: full cost pass-through with stable units, partial pass-through with lower units, and no pass-through with margin compression.

Separate natural and lab-grown diamond exposure

Signet’s FY2026 filing states that products containing lab-grown diamonds represented approximately 27% of its merchandise sales. It also describes declining lab-grown diamond costs and retail prices as a potential business risk. Treat both figures and the risk assessment as Signet-specific. When another issuer reports a similar category, ask whether it measures sales, units, or product availability and whether the period and denominator match.

For diamond exposure, examine inventory valuation, price reductions, consumer acceptance, supplier contracts and the possibility that falling stone prices reduce the value of existing stock. Do not assume that a lower input price automatically improves profit: retail prices, demand, markdowns and competitive behaviour determine who captures the benefit.

5. Analyse customers, competition and seasonality

Jewellery demand is often discretionary and event-driven. Review quarterly sales, comparable-store trends, average transaction value, traffic, conversion, promotions, financing and geographic mix. Compare the same fiscal quarter across years rather than relying only on sequential changes, because holiday and gifting periods can make one quarter unusually large.

Use the issuer’s fiscal calendar

Birks reported that its third fiscal quarter contributed 34% of FY2026 net sales, compared with 34% in FY2025 and 33% in FY2024. Those percentages describe Birks’ own seasonal pattern for the stated fiscal years; they are not a jewellery-industry average. Reproduce the same calculation for the issuer you are studying, using its fiscal quarters and reported net sales.

Check promotional dependence

  • Compare gross margin during promotional periods with non-promotional periods.
  • Track clearance and markdown language in management discussion and inventory notes.
  • Check whether loyalty discounts, financing offers or extended service plans change reported margin.
  • Distinguish store traffic weakness from lower conversion or a change in product mix.
  • Review geographic and channel results for signs that one market is masking weakness elsewhere.

Signet’s FY2026 Form 10-K warns that, because its sales are highly seasonal, any adverse factor occurring during the holiday season would have an increased impact. This is Signet’s own risk assessment. Apply the same logic to every issuer: a cyber incident, supply interruption, weather event or consumer slowdown during the largest selling weeks can have a disproportionate annual effect.

6. Evaluate responsible-sourcing and traceability claims

Responsible-sourcing language is useful only when you identify its scope and limitations. Read the company’s conflict-minerals report, supplier code, modern-slavery statement and sustainability sections alongside the annual filing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a scope checklist

  • Which materials are covered: gold, tin, tantalum, tungsten, diamonds, coloured stones or other inputs?
  • Which suppliers, factories, products and geographies are included?
  • Does the process rely on questionnaires, certifications, chain-of-custody records, audits or a combination?
  • Are audits performed by independent third parties, and what standard is used?
  • How are non-compliant suppliers handled, and are remediation results disclosed?
  • What reporting year does the data cover, and are limitations or gaps acknowledged?

Signet’s conflict-minerals report for calendar year 2024 describes a supplier reporting process under its Responsible Sourcing Protocol, alignment with OECD due-diligence guidance and third-party audit procedures. Its conclusions apply to the covered products, suppliers and reporting period described in that report. They are evidence of Signet’s reported methods and conclusions, not independent proof that every upstream risk has been eliminated.

Separate legal compliance from broader commitments

A conflict-minerals filing may satisfy a particular regulatory requirement while leaving other materials or labour risks outside its scope. Conversely, a broad sustainability promise may not provide product-level traceability. Record each claim with its material scope, geographic coverage, verification method and date before using it in a comparison.

7. Compare peers on consistent axes

Peer comparison is useful only after you normalize definitions. Use the same fiscal periods, currency treatment and accounting basis wherever possible. If one issuer reports retail sales including concessions and another reports only company-operated stores, label the difference rather than combining the figures.

Comparison axis Evidence to collect Why it matters
Business model Retail, e-commerce, wholesale, manufacturing, services and precious-metal exchange mix Different activities carry different margins, working-capital needs and risks.
Brand and product control Owned brands, licensed brands, internally designed products and third-party merchandise Design ownership can affect differentiation and gross margin; licenses can create dependency.
Financial quality Revenue, comparable sales, gross and operating margins, cash conversion and capital expenditure Shows whether reported growth becomes durable cash generation.
Inventory Turnover, markdowns, accounting method, consignment and virtual inventory Reveals demand risk and the amount of cash tied up in merchandise.
Concentration Largest suppliers, customers, licensors and geographic markets Concentration can magnify disruption or bargaining-power risk.
Commodity exposure Gold, silver, diamond, gemstone, labour and currency sensitivity; hedging Shows how quickly costs can reach margins, prices and cash flow.
Demand pattern Quarterly sales, holiday share, promotions, financing and channel mix Helps distinguish structural growth from seasonal or promotional spikes.
Balance sheet Debt maturities, lease liabilities, liquidity, covenants and share dilution Determines resilience when demand or margins weaken.
Sourcing disclosure Material coverage, supplier coverage, audit method, findings and limitations Prevents broad claims based on narrow or unaudited statements.

Choose valuation measures that fit the model

For a peer valuation, state why you selected earnings, enterprise value to operating profit, revenue, free cash flow or another measure. Adjust the interpretation for growth, leverage, leases, accounting policies, store ownership, product mix and one-off charges. A retailer with heavy lease obligations and a manufacturer with owned factories should not be treated as identical simply because both sell jewellery.

Do not draw a valuation conclusion from this general method. A current share-price view requires the named issuer’s latest results, net debt, share count, guidance and market price immediately before publication.

8. Follow a repeatable filing workflow

  1. Download the latest annual filing. Record the issuer identity, fiscal dates, reporting currency and share class.
  2. Read the business and segment sections. Write a one-sentence description of each revenue stream and channel.
  3. Build the historical worksheet. Enter at least three years of revenue, margins, earnings, cash flow, capital expenditure, inventory, debt and diluted shares.
  4. Read accounting notes. Flag inventory costing, revenue recognition, leases, impairment, non-GAAP reconciliations and foreign-exchange treatment.
  5. Add interim results. Compare the same fiscal quarter or half-year with prior years and mark holiday or event-driven periods.
  6. Investigate working capital. Explain inventory, receivables, payables, purchase commitments and any virtual or consignment arrangements.
  7. Map supplier and commodity risk. Note concentration, sourcing geographies, hedging, pricing actions and exposure to metals, stones and labour.
  8. Review sourcing reports. Record covered materials, suppliers, audits, standards, findings and limitations by reporting year.
  9. Compare peers. Use identical definitions and periods, and label every figure that is issuer-specific.
  10. Write the bear case. Identify the event that would most damage cash flow: demand decline, markdowns, input-cost shock, supplier loss, liquidity pressure or a compliance failure.
  11. Update before acting. Recheck the latest filing, interim release, material-event announcements and share count; old annual-report numbers may no longer describe the business.

9. Red flags that deserve a second reading

  • Inventory rising materially faster than sales without a clear expansion or commodity-price explanation.
  • Profit growth accompanied by weak operating cash flow or repeated working-capital outflows.
  • Large adjusted-profit additions that recur every year.
  • Margin improvement explained only by price increases while units, traffic or conversion decline.
  • Heavy reliance on one supplier, licensor, customer, country or holiday period.
  • Commodity or currency exposure discussed in risk factors but absent from sensitivity analysis or guidance.
  • Responsible-sourcing claims that do not specify materials, supplier coverage, audit scope or reporting year.
  • Rapid share-count growth, new borrowing or covenant pressure hidden behind a strong earnings-per-share headline.
  • Peer comparisons that mix fiscal years, currencies, channel definitions or accounting measures.

10. What this research can and cannot establish

Published disclosures can establish how management describes the business, what the audited statements report, which risks the issuer identifies and how specific sourcing processes are designed. They cannot guarantee future demand, verify every upstream supplier independently or tell you whether the market price already reflects the risks.

Use filings as a disciplined starting point, not as a substitute for portfolio sizing, diversification, tax advice or a current valuation. The strongest research note makes its assumptions visible: the period measured, the definition used, the source of each number and the condition that would invalidate the investment thesis.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
