You can estimate whether a job is worth pursuing before you apply, but no public source can guarantee your eventual offer. Use a five-part check: compare the same role and location, read the employer’s own range and benefits language, benchmark the occupation with official wage data, cross-check employee-reported estimates, and ask how the employer sets pay. Treat every figure as evidence with a date and a definition—not as a promise.
Start by defining the job you are actually comparing
“Software engineer,” “marketing manager,” or “sales representative” can describe materially different work. Before collecting numbers, write down the context of the opening:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Role family and duties: Record the work described in the posting, not just its title. A customer-success role with a renewal quota is not comparable to a support role with no sales target.
- Level: Note whether the employer describes the job as entry level, associate, senior, lead, manager, or director. If the posting gives a level code, keep it in your notes.
- Location: Capture the office, metropolitan area, state, or remote-work geography. A “remote” job may use your residence, an approved payroll state, or a national band when setting pay.
- Experience and credentials: Record the requested years of experience, required licenses, technical skills, travel, shift work, and people-management responsibility.
- Pay concept: Label each figure as hourly wage, annual base salary, target bonus, commission opportunity, equity, or total compensation. Do not mix these categories in one comparison.
Make a one-line comparison statement such as “Senior data analyst, Chicago, five-plus years, individual contributor, base salary.” Use that same statement when you search postings and salary data. Glassdoor’s salary guidance similarly recommends filtering by title, location, and years of experience. A title-only search can make a low-level job in one market appear comparable to a senior job in another when it is not.

Identify what the posted range includes
- Check whether the figures are hourly or annual and whether the posting states a currency and pay period.
- Look for wording such as “base salary,” “target earnings,” “on-target earnings,” “commissionable,” “bonus eligible,” or “equity eligible.” These labels can describe very different amounts of guaranteed cash.
- Note whether the range applies to one location, several states, a national remote workforce, or multiple levels. A broad geography or combined level can explain a very wide band.
- Record the posting date and any closing date. Compensation programs and ranges can change while a listing remains online.
Read benefits and eligibility clauses
Look for health-plan choices and employee premiums, paid leave, retirement contributions, disability coverage, life insurance, parental leave, stipends, and eligibility waiting periods. “Benefits available” is not a valuation; it tells you to ask for the plan details. A retirement match, for example, matters only when you know the percentage, eligible pay, vesting schedule, and any employee contribution required.
Search the same employer for comparable openings
Review active and recently posted jobs in the same family. Compare level labels, location bands, reporting relationships, and the wording used for bonus or equity. Similar titles with different ranges may reflect level, geography, a different business unit, or a different incentive plan. Do not assume that a missing range proves the employer pays less or is violating a rule; it establishes only that the public posting does not answer that question.
Benchmark the occupation with official wage data
Official statistics provide a broader reference point than one employer’s advertisement. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that its pay and benefits data are available for occupations, industries, geographic areas, and demographic characteristics of workers. Its programs measure different pay concepts, so select the measure that matches your question rather than combining unrelated figures.
Use BLS for the right comparison
- Choose an occupational classification that matches the duties. The closest title in a database may not be the closest occupation in practice.
- Select the relevant area or national series and note the reference period. Wage estimates are not live quotes for a specific vacancy.
- Distinguish wage percentiles from averages. A median describes the midpoint of the measured workers; it does not predict where a particular candidate will fall.
- Use BLS benefits information separately from wage information. Benefits surveys can describe insurance, retirement, paid leave, supplemental pay, and legally required benefits, but they do not convert automatically into the value of your employer’s package.
BLS provides a comparison tool because its surveys and programs answer different questions. Keep the source name, series, geography, occupation, and date beside every number in your notes.
Check CareerOneStop’s Salary Finder
The U.S. Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop Salary Finder offers another official route to occupation-based wage estimates by location. Use it as a second benchmark, not as an exact forecast of one company’s offer. Differences between CareerOneStop and BLS can result from occupation definitions, geographic groupings, survey periods, or the pay statistic selected.
Use employee-reported and modeled estimates carefully
Salary platforms can add company- or title-level context that official occupation tables cannot. First identify the provenance of each number:

| Evidence | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Employer-posted range | The organization’s stated band for the listed job context at the time of posting. | Your level, placement, bonus payout, equity value, or final offer. |
| Employee-reported salary | Amounts people say they received, often with title, location, level, and date details. | Whether the reports are representative, current, or from the same job family. |
| Modeled estimate | A platform’s statistical estimate based on its methodology and available inputs. | A verified salary paid by this employer to someone with your exact background. |
| Official occupation data | Wage patterns for a defined occupation and geography. | The pay policy or budget of one employer. |
For each platform result, save the date, sample or report count if shown, location, level, and whether the figure is base pay or total compensation. A single anonymous report is a lead for a question, not a reliable market rate. A cluster of recent, like-for-like reports is more useful, but still may reflect self-selection and reporting error.

How accurate are salary ranges in job postings?
Advertised ranges are informative but imperfect. Glassdoor’s analysis published September 30, 2024 examined listings dated January 1 through July 1, 2024 and matched them with salary data reaching back to 2023. In that platform-specific analysis, user-reported salaries fell inside the advertised range in 67% of listings, below it in 22%, and above it in 11%.
| Observed result in Glassdoor’s analysis | Share of listings | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Reported salary within the posted range | 67% | The range aligned with a reported salary in most, but not all, cases in that dataset. |
| Reported salary below the posted range | 22% | Some reports did not fit the advertised band; differences in level, timing, location, or data quality may matter. |
| Reported salary above the posted range | 11% | Some employees reported more than the listed band, potentially because of different role context or pay components. |
These percentages describe that study’s listings and reporting data, not every employer or current posting. Glassdoor also found that reported salaries in its dataset more often clustered in the lower half of posted ranges. Its Economic Research author Luna Liu wrote: “Actual salaries reported by employees skew toward the lower half of the range published in online job advertisements.” Treat that as a reason to ask about placement criteria, not as a rule that you will receive the minimum.
Ranges can be less accurate in occupations with substantial incentive compensation. A band that combines base pay with an unclear commission opportunity may look generous while leaving guaranteed cash unchanged. The wider the band, the more important it is to learn whether it spans locations, levels, or different pay components.
Evaluate where you might land in the range
Do not use the midpoint as your predicted offer. Instead, ask what measurable factors move a candidate toward the lower or upper end.
- Scope: Which responsibilities, customer size, product complexity, or decision authority distinguish the upper end?
- Relevant experience: Does the employer reward years, directly transferable results, scarce technical skills, licenses, or people leadership?
- Internal equity: Is placement constrained by pay for current employees doing comparable work?
- Location policy: Does the employer adjust pay for residence, assigned office, or labor-market tier?
- Hiring conditions: Are the range and budget fixed for this requisition, or can exceptional candidates receive approval above the band?
A range that covers several states and three career levels contains less information about your likely offer than a narrow band for one level in one location. Write down the employer’s explanation and compare it with the duties and requirements rather than grading the number alone.

Separate base pay from total compensation
Create a side-by-side worksheet before deciding whether to apply. Keep guaranteed and contingent amounts in different rows.
| Component | Questions to answer | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary or hourly wage | What is guaranteed, how often is it paid, and is the amount location-specific? | This is the clearest recurring cash figure and the basis for some benefits. |
| Bonus | What is the target, what is the historical or stated payout range, and which individual, team, or company metrics apply? | A target is not guaranteed cash; payout can be below, at, or above target. |
| Commission | What is the quota, commission rate, ramp period, draw, cap, and percentage of the team reaching quota? | “On-target earnings” depends on performance and plan mechanics. |
| Equity | What type, number of units or shares, vesting schedule, exercise or liquidity rules, and grant-date valuation apply? | A headline grant may not be cash, may vest over time, and can change in value. |
| Health and protection benefits | What are employee premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket limits, employer contributions, and coverage waiting periods? | Two plans with the same label can impose very different costs and risk. |
| Retirement | What contribution or match is offered, what pay is eligible, and when do contributions vest? | Employer contributions and vesting affect long-term value. |
| Paid leave and other benefits | How much leave is provided, when can it be used, and are there stipends, bonuses, or required travel costs? | Time, predictable expenses, and flexibility can materially change the package. |
BLS’s benefits resources identify categories including supplemental pay, insurance, retirement, paid leave, and legally required benefits. Use those categories to make your worksheet complete, but request the employer’s actual plan terms before assigning a dollar value.
Questions to ask the recruiter
Ask concise questions tied to the specific posting. The goal is to discover definitions and decision rules, not to demand an exact offer before the employer has assessed your fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- “Is the posted range base salary, or does it include variable compensation?”
- “What factors determine where a candidate is placed within the range?”
- “How does the range vary by work location or level?”
- “Could you share the target bonus or commission structure and how it is measured?”
- “Can you describe the benefits that have the greatest effect on total compensation, including employee premiums and retirement contributions?”
- “For this role, when are compensation and level decisions normally finalized?”
If the recruiter cannot answer, record exactly what remains unknown. An answer such as “the range is $80,000–$120,000 depending on experience” is not complete until you know whether that means base pay, which level it covers, and what “experience” means in the employer’s framework.
Use a decision rule before spending time on an application
Turn your notes into a simple go/no-go test. Set a personal minimum for guaranteed base pay and a separate minimum for the total package you would accept. Then classify the opening:
- Strong match: The role, location, and level are comparable to your target; base pay clears your minimum; and the remaining uncertainty can be resolved in an initial recruiter conversation.
- Conditional match: The range is broad, the location policy is unclear, or variable pay is material. Apply only if the work, advancement, or other non-cash value justifies learning more.
- Poor match: Even the stated base range is below your minimum, or the job requires contingent earnings you would not accept. Declining early can save interview time.
Keep “worth applying” separate from “worth accepting.” An application can be sensible when the public information is incomplete but the role is attractive and a short conversation can resolve the uncertainty. An eventual offer still requires its own comparison with your minimums.

Account for U.S. location and pay-transparency rules
Pay-disclosure requirements differ by state, locality, and sometimes by the employee’s work location or the employer’s size. Rules can change, and a posting that reaches multiple jurisdictions may use a policy designed to satisfy more than one requirement. This guide is not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal analysis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a legal question—such as whether a range must appear in a particular advertisement, whether an employer must provide it on request, or what records an employer must keep—check the labor agency or other official authority for the location where the work will be performed. Do not treat the presence or absence of a range as proof that an employer is complying or failing to comply with a law.
Location also changes the market data itself. Label whether your benchmark is national, metropolitan, state-based, office-based, or remote. A national estimate can obscure a meaningful difference between labor markets, while a city estimate may not apply if the employer pays remote workers by a separate tier.
A repeatable 30-minute research workflow
- Save the original posting. Record the URL, date, title, level, location, range, and benefits language. Keep a copy because listings can be edited.
- Write the comparison statement. Include duties, level, geography, experience, and pay concept.
- Inspect the career site. Find comparable openings and note differences in level, geography, and incentive language.
- Collect two official benchmarks. Use the relevant BLS occupation and geography, then check CareerOneStop’s Salary Finder. Record each measure and date.
- Cross-check reported figures. Gather several recent, like-for-like reports where available. Separate employee-reported amounts from modeled estimates.
- Build the compensation worksheet. Put base, bonus, commission, equity, insurance, retirement, leave, and other material benefits on separate lines.
- Mark unknowns. Highlight any range definition, location rule, payout condition, or benefit cost you cannot verify.
- Ask the recruiter targeted questions. Use the unknowns to decide whether the role meets your application threshold.
- Make the application decision. Compare guaranteed pay first, then evaluate the risk and upside of variable components and the value of the work itself.
Common mistakes that make pay research misleading
Comparing titles instead of work
Fix this by matching duties, level, geography, and experience before looking at a number.
Treating the top of a range as normal
The upper bound describes a permitted outcome in the employer’s stated band, not the expected offer. Ask what qualifications justify it.
Adding target bonus to base as if it were guaranteed
Show target, minimum, and attainable payout separately when the employer provides them. If the plan rules are unknown, leave the amount unvalued.
Best Value
Using an undated salary estimate
Record the publication or report date and the geography. Older data may be useful context but should not be presented as a current quote.
Assuming official data predicts one company
BLS and CareerOneStop describe occupational markets. They do not reveal a particular employer’s internal budget, leveling, or negotiation policy.
Ignoring benefits because they are difficult to price
At minimum, compare employee premiums, deductibles, employer retirement contributions, vesting, paid leave, and required work expenses. Unknown does not mean zero.

Pay-transparency obligations are location-specific. Verify them with the applicable official labor authority rather than relying on a general internet summary.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A disciplined search can tell you whether the advertised base appears plausible for the role and market, whether the package contains substantial variable risk, and which questions could change your decision. It cannot establish your individual offer with certainty. Hiring level, internal equity, location policy, budget changes, negotiation, and performance-plan details all matter.
Interest in transparent pay is widespread: Glassdoor’s July 27, 2026 guide reported that 83% of U.S. employees and job seekers surveyed said transparent pay bands or targets were very or somewhat important to feeling included. Glassdoor’s report did not provide a sample size or field dates in the cited material, so treat the figure as a reported survey result rather than a measure of every worker’s view.
Use the numbers to decide whether further investigation is worth your time. The strongest conclusion is usually conditional: “This role appears to meet my base-pay threshold for this location, but I need the recruiter to clarify level placement and variable compensation.” That is a sound application decision without pretending that public research can predict a final offer.
