You can rerun an esports scrim VOD as a YouTube livestream by setting up an encoder broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then playing the recording through that encoder. You can also upload the VOD as a regular video if viewers should watch on demand instead of joining a scheduled live event. Before either option, confirm that you have permission for the specific footage and its audio, and add meaningful scrim-specific analysis: permission to rebroadcast and eligibility for YouTube monetization are separate questions.
Choose a livestream or a regular VOD upload
| Option | What viewers get | Production and archive considerations | Rights and copyright considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled livestream replay | A scheduled event with real-time chat; after the stream, viewers may be able to replay it on the channel. | Requires an encoder broadcast and monitoring while it runs. YouTube may automatically archive streams under 12 hours; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording. | YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, interruption or termination, and an archived stream can receive a Content ID claim after it ends. |
| Regular video upload | On-demand viewing without a live event or live chat. | Upload the prepared VOD and manage it as a channel video. It avoids relying on livestream archive capture, though you should still keep your own source file. | Uploading does not remove the need for rights to the footage, music, voices or other material included in it. |
YouTube’s documentation supports livestream replay availability but does not establish that either format performs better for esports scrims. Choose based on whether a scheduled community watch and live chat serve a purpose, or whether viewers mainly need a searchable, on-demand match archive.

Confirm permissions before scheduling
YouTube makes the live content provider responsible for necessary rights. Its livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Owning or possessing the VOD file is not, by itself, proof that you have all the rights needed to rebroadcast it.
- Giving credit or having a general relationship with a team does not automatically settle permissions for the game, players, music or event feed.
- A license may not stop YouTube from interrupting a live stream. The rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the event
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have had no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days to enable streaming. The stated minimum age for livestreaming is 16. Check YouTube’s current getting-started requirements before planning a broadcast, since platform rules can change.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Configure a livestream event and select the encoder workflow for the VOD playback and any overlays. YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays.
- Set the event details. Add an accurate title, description, schedule and visibility setting. Explain that this is a scrim replay, identify the teams or match only as permitted, and tell viewers whether you will provide live analysis.
- Review reused settings carefully. Reusing a prior stream’s settings copies metadata, settings and the stream key. Review and edit the copied details before starting the new event; do not assume the old key or event description is appropriate.
- Configure the encoder to play the VOD. Use the encoder’s media-playback workflow to send the recording and any overlays to the stream. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe one encoder brand or a universal set of bitrate and resolution values for this use case, so follow the encoder’s current instructions and the live setup values shown for your event rather than guessing.
- Decide whether to enable DVR or Live Redirect. YouTube documents these as livestream options in its live stream settings. Choose only settings that fit the event; neither changes your rights obligations.
Test the replay, audio and archive plan
Before announcing the event, start an encoder test or private/unlisted check as appropriate for your setup. Confirm the stream preview and playback, listen for game audio, commentary and music balance, and check that overlays are legible. Verify playback from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover checking the encoder preview and stream health.

- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
- Check that the VOD begins at the intended point and that audio remains synchronized.
- Confirm the stream key is entered in the encoder and that the event is receiving a signal before you go live.
- Record a local copy during the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- After the event, open YouTube Studio and check the stream’s archive status and visibility. A replay can remain as a channel video when it was captured and the visibility settings allow it.
Add original value rather than simply looping footage
Give viewers a reason to watch this particular scrim. Add a host introduction, explain the practice objective, mark key timestamps, or provide live coaching analysis about rotations, decision points, communication or a team’s adjustments. Make each replay’s commentary specific to that match rather than applying identical packaging to unattended reruns.

YouTube’s channel monetization policies say its inauthentic-content policy covers repetitive or mass-produced material. Its reused-content policy gives this example of allowed content: “Replays of a sports tournament where you explain the moves a competitor did to succeed”. That is a policy example, not a blanket exemption for esports or scrim VODs, and it does not guarantee monetization approval.

Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement and applies at channel level. A channel can have permission and still fail monetization review if viewers cannot see meaningful original contribution. Conversely, adding analysis does not grant rights to use material you are not authorized to rebroadcast.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The encoder does not connect: Check that livestreaming is enabled for the channel, the event is configured for an encoder, and the stream key entered in the encoder matches the current event. If you reused settings, review the copied key and event details.
- The preview is blank or playback fails: Confirm the encoder is sending the VOD and that the event preview has received a signal. Recheck the playback source and the event’s visibility before going live.
- Viewers cannot hear commentary or game audio: Test the mix before the event and listen from the watch page, not only through the encoder’s monitoring output. Adjust the source levels and repeat the check.
- YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream: A live scan may identify third-party content, including another live broadcast. YouTube can show a placeholder, warn, temporarily interrupt or terminate a stream if identified content remains. Resolve the matched material and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where you have a license; a license alone may not prevent interruption. The finished archive may also receive a later Content ID claim.
- The replay is missing afterward: Check YouTube Studio for archive status and visibility. If the stream ran more than 12 hours, it may not have been captured at all; use the local recording as your backup.
- Monetization is limited or denied: Rights clearance does not settle reused-content eligibility. Review whether the channel adds substantial, distinct commentary or educational value and whether its overall uploads appear repetitive or minimally changed.
