Keep the post’s URL and your report confirmation. In the United States, covered platforms have had to provide a removal-request process since May 19, 2026, and the federal law requires action within 48 hours after a valid request. The rules and deadlines differ elsewhere.
First, preserve details without spreading the video
Before reporting, write down the exact URL of the post or video, the account or channel name, the platform, and the date you found it. Save the platform’s confirmation, case number, and any relevant messages. Do not download or forward an intimate video just to prove it exists; use the platform’s reporting form and follow its instructions for any evidence it requests.

If the post is changing or you fear it may disappear, record the identifying details promptly. Avoid reposting the video or sharing its link more widely than necessary.

On the service hosting the video, look for its current option for non-consensual intimate imagery, intimate-image abuse, or a non-consensual sexual image. Select that route when the deepfake depicts intimate or sexual content and was shared without the depicted person’s consent. A video being synthetic does not, by itself, make an intimate-image reporting route irrelevant. Not every deepfake is intimate, and the applicable category depends on the content and the platform.

- Open the platform’s current help or safety page and choose its NCII or intimate-image reporting process.
- Provide the video or post URL and the requested information about the depicted person and lack of consent. Do not send extra copies of the video unless the platform specifically explains a safe way to do so.
- Submit the form and retain the confirmation or case number. Check the platform’s response for any follow-up steps.
YouTube, for example, describes multiple ways to report NCII, including a route related to the U.S. TAKE IT DOWN Act. Its instructions apply to YouTube; other services have their own forms and procedures. What the U.S. TAKE IT DOWN Act requires
For covered platforms, the federal TAKE IT DOWN Act’s platform requirements began on May 19, 2026. The FTC says a covered platform must make an accessible way to request removal available. After receiving a valid request, the platform must remove covered imagery and known identical copies within 48 hours. This is a U.S. requirement, not a worldwide deadline, and it applies to covered content and platforms as defined by the law—not automatically to every video or service.

The statutory text is in 47 U.S.C. § 223a. The FTC explains the platform duties in Complying With the Take It Down Act and its May 19, 2026 enforcement announcement.
If a covered U.S. platform does not act
If a covered platform has no removal process, its process is broken, or it fails to follow its legal duty, you can report the platform to the FTC. This is a complaint about the platform’s compliance; it is not a guarantee that the FTC will remove the video immediately or resolve an individual case on a particular schedule.

- Submit the removal request to the platform first and keep its confirmation, case number, and any response.
- Use the FTC’s reporting route for platforms that fail to take down intimate images if the platform lacks or fails to follow its process.
- Include the platform name, the relevant post URL, and the details of your request and the platform’s response, as requested by the FTC form.

Limit matching re-uploads separately
A platform report asks the host to address a specific post. Hash-based services are a separate tool: they create a digital fingerprint of an image or video to help participating services identify matching copies. They may help limit re-uploads but do not replace reporting the existing post, and matching is not guaranteed for every participating platform or altered version.

Use the service appropriate to the person depicted and follow its current instructions. The FTC lists both options in its TAKE IT DOWN Act guidance. Platform participation and matching limits mean these services cannot promise removal everywhere.
If you are outside the United States, or the situation is urgent
Removal rights, criminal rules, reporting forms, and deadlines depend on the person’s country and the platform. Do not assume the U.S. 48-hour rule applies abroad. For example, a September 2026 UK government factsheet describes separate measures and a 48-hour outer limit in its framework; whether that framework applies to a particular person or case requires checking the current UK rules and circumstances. If the video depicts someone who was a minor when it was made, contact the relevant child-safety service and a trusted adult or support organization; do not circulate the material. If anyone is threatening or extorting the depicted person, consider contacting local law enforcement or a specialist support organization. The appropriate service depends on where the person is and the immediate risk.
