Microsoft treats the submission as a request for review, not an automatic approval.
Microsoft says a request can take up to 72 hours to process. When approved, the refund is generally sent to the original payment option within 3–5 business days. Availability of the online form and the decision itself depend on the purchase type, offer terms, market, and applicable law.

What you need before starting
Have the Microsoft account credentials used to buy the game. The refund workflow is tied to the purchasing account, so signing in with a different family member’s or console user’s account can hide the order you need.

This process is for an Xbox digital game, downloadable add-on, or another digital item shown in Microsoft account order history. It does not describe returns for a physical disc or a purchase made through a separate retailer. For an Xbox purchase, first look for the transaction in Microsoft account Order history.

Find the transaction details
Knowing the game title, purchase date, and whether the transaction was for a full game or add-on makes it easier to select the correct line item. If several similar entries appear, match the item and date before submitting; requesting a refund for the wrong order can delay resolution.
Set the right expectation about eligibility
Digital goods are not automatically returnable. Microsoft states that digital goods such as games and add-on content are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes the customer eligible. Xbox publishes separate digital-game refund terms, and the applicable rules can vary by market and purchase type.
Recent purchase alone is not a guarantee. Light use alone is not a guarantee either. The request is reviewed against the terms that apply to the transaction and the circumstances you provide.

Use the following sequence in a browser or through the Microsoft account area where your Xbox orders are listed:
- Sign in. Use the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
- Open your orders. Go to Microsoft account Order history, or start from the official Xbox digital-games refund page.
- Select the item. Choose the relevant game, add-on, or other eligible digital item.
- Choose Request a refund. If the button appears for that transaction, select it to begin the review form.
- Give the reason. Select or enter the reason requested by the form. Keep the explanation accurate and specific to the transaction.
- Select Next. Continue to the review screen.
- Check the details. Verify the account, item, and reason before sending the request.
- Select Submit. The request enters Microsoft’s review process.
Microsoft describes this as a request rather than an instant reversal. Submitting the form does not by itself establish that the purchase qualifies or that a refund will be issued.

How eligibility is decided
The key question is not simply “When did I buy it?” Microsoft’s published wording says digital goods, including games and add-on content, are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law says the customer is eligible. Xbox’s separate digital-game terms and the rules in your market therefore matter.
Purchase and content type
A full digital game and an add-on are both digital goods, but the terms attached to the particular offer can differ. Select the exact line item in order history rather than assuming that a game purchase and its add-on have the same treatment.
Market availability
Online returns are not available in every market. A missing online form may reflect regional availability rather than a technical problem with your account. The country or region associated with the transaction is relevant to the route Microsoft makes available and to any consumer rights that apply.
Offer terms and applicable law
An offer can contain terms that make a digital purchase refundable, and local law can provide rights that override or supplement ordinary offer rules. The current Xbox digital-game eligibility page for your market is the appropriate place to check those conditions.
Review, not entitlement
Microsoft Support’s wording is deliberately conditional: “If you purchased a game or app from Microsoft, you may be able to request a refund.” That means the presence of a form is not a promise that the request will be approved. The decision is made after the request is reviewed under the applicable terms and circumstances.

What to do when “Request a refund” is missing
Do not submit a different order by mistake or assume that the purchase is permanently ineligible after one missing button. Work through the following checks.

Check the account first
Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that paid for the game. If the order is absent entirely, the most likely immediate issue is account selection rather than the form itself.
Check the item and purchase route
Make sure you selected the digital game or add-on entry, not an unrelated order. If the purchase was not made through Microsoft’s Xbox or Microsoft storefront, the Microsoft refund form may not control that transaction; the seller that processed the payment would have its own process.
Consider regional availability
Microsoft says online returns are not available in all markets. If the order is correct but no online return option is offered, Microsoft advises contacting Sales support. Explain that the item is visible in order history but the Request a refund option is unavailable, and ask which refund route applies in your market.
Keep a record of what you see
Note the order date, item name, and the exact status or message shown. A screenshot can help support identify the transaction, but do not include unnecessary account or payment details when sharing it.

How long an Xbox refund takes
There are two separate time periods:

The 72-hour period concerns processing the request, not the time for money to appear in your account. The 3–5-business-day period applies after approval and is measured for the original payment option. Bank, card, or payment-provider posting can affect when the credit becomes visible after Microsoft has processed it.
If 72 hours have passed without a decision
Open the refund area and check the Refund status tab. Microsoft says it provides updates there after submission. Confirm that you are signed in to the same Microsoft account used to make the request.
If the status remains unclear, use the information in your order history and any submission confirmation when contacting Microsoft support. State whether the request is still under review, approved, declined, or absent from the status list. Avoid creating duplicate requests for the same item unless support specifically instructs you to do so.
If the request was approved but the credit is not visible
Allow the stated 3–5 business days for the original payment option. Check the account associated with that payment method and look for a credit or reversal rather than a new Xbox balance entry. If the period has elapsed, contact support or the payment provider with the order details and approval information.
Self-service request or support contact?
Use the online form when it is offered for the transaction. Contact support when the online route is unavailable or when the status needs clarification.

How to write the reason for the request
The form asks for a reason because Microsoft needs the circumstances of the transaction to assess eligibility. Use a short, factual explanation that identifies what happened. For example, explain that you selected the wrong digital item or that the purchase did not match your intended transaction if that is the truth.
Do not describe a different problem simply because you think it sounds more likely to qualify. A clear explanation helps the reviewer compare the request with the offer terms and any rights that apply in your market. It also gives support a consistent record if you later need to ask about the status.
Common mistakes that slow a request
- Using the wrong Microsoft account: The order will not appear, or you may select a different household member’s purchase.
- Selecting the wrong line item: Games and add-ons can appear as separate transactions. Confirm the title before submitting.
- Treating submission as approval: The form starts a review; it does not guarantee a refund.
- Ignoring regional rules: The online return option is not available in every market.

- Giving an inaccurate reason: The explanation should match the actual transaction and circumstances.
A practical decision path
- Sign in to the paying Microsoft account.
- Locate the exact game or add-on in Order history.
- If Request a refund appears, complete the reason, review, and Submit steps.
- If the option does not appear, verify the account, item type, purchase route, and market.
- If online returns are unavailable in your market, contact Sales support with the order details.
- After submission, monitor Refund status for up to 72 hours.
- If approved, wait 3–5 business days for the original payment option to receive the refund before escalating a missing credit.
What you should know before relying on a refund
