Start with the company that processed your payment, submit the request as soon as possible, and stop using the course while it is reviewed. A refund is controlled by a combination of the provider’s policy, the course type, how much content you accessed, the payment channel, and consumer law where you live. A website purchase, an Apple App Store or Google Play purchase, a marketplace transaction, and a recurring subscription can each follow a different process.
Find the seller of record on your receipt, gather the order details, use the provider or marketplace’s official refund route, and keep written evidence. If the seller refuses a valid request or continues charging after cancellation, you may have a card-dispute or statutory remedy, but deadlines are short and vary by country.

Identify who can actually issue the refund
The first step is not writing a long explanation; it is identifying the merchant that took your money. Check the receipt, bank statement, app-store purchase history, or marketplace invoice. The name shown there determines where the initial request belongs.

- Provider website: Use the course company’s Help, Purchases, Billing, or Refund area. The company normally controls eligibility and sends money back through its payment processor.
- Apple App Store or Google Play: The marketplace may be the seller of record. Its refund rules and submission form can apply even when the course provider hosts the lessons.
- Another marketplace or payment service: Follow that marketplace’s dispute or refund process first. A provider may be unable to reverse a marketplace transaction directly.
- Subscription billing: Cancel renewal immediately in the account that bills you. Cancellation stops future charges; it does not automatically refund the current billing period.
Save the receipt, order or transaction number, purchase date, amount, currency, payment method, and the account email. Those details let support locate the transaction and establish which policy was in force when you bought it.

Check the policy and your usage before asking
Refund eligibility is usually strongest when you are inside the provider’s stated window and have used little or none of the course. Read the current policy and, if available, the version that applied on your purchase date. Policies can distinguish individual courses, bundles, certificates, trials, memberships, and promotional purchases.
Udemy’s published rule
Udemy states: “We want you to be satisfied, so all eligible courses purchased on Udemy can be refunded within 30 days.” Its current help guidance directs eligible requests through Purchase History or the course player, and says a refund request cannot be submitted in the mobile app. Some payment methods may receive Udemy credit instead of money returned to the original payment method, and subscriptions have separate restrictions. Treat the 30 days as a policy deadline for eligible individual courses, not a universal legal right.
Coursera’s withdrawal and processing terms
Coursera’s current Terms of Use say that users in the European Union and United Kingdom may have a 14-day withdrawal period beginning when access to the applicable subscription commences. The same terms explain that the right can be lost when the service is fully performed or when access begins after the required express consent. A withdrawal request must be submitted through the Learner Help Center. Coursera states that applicable refunds generally take 7–10 business days to process.

Access can change the result
Do not continue watching videos, downloading materials, submitting graded work, or completing a substantial portion while a request is pending. Coursera says it may deny a request when a significant portion has been accessed and explains that use of a digital service can affect withdrawal rights. Other platforms may apply similar rules. A provider may also treat a completed certificate, consumed download, or heavily used subscription differently from an untouched purchase.
Submit the request promptly
- Open the official support or billing route. On a provider website, sign in and open Help, Purchases, Billing, or Refunds. For Udemy, use Purchase History or the course player; do not try to submit from the mobile app. For Coursera, use the Learner Help Center for a withdrawal request.
- Select the exact transaction. Choose the course, subscription, or order rather than sending a general account complaint. Confirm the purchase date, price, currency, and payment instrument.
- State the remedy clearly. Ask to cancel the purchase and refund it to the original payment method. If it is a subscription, separately ask for renewal cancellation so another payment is not taken.
- Explain only facts that matter. Include whether you have watched or downloaded anything, whether the course failed to match its description, and the policy or statutory basis you are relying on. Do not claim non-use if your account shows activity.
- Keep proof of submission. Save the confirmation number, screenshots of the form, support emails, the policy text, and the date and time sent. These records matter if you need to escalate.
- Monitor the original payment account. A refund may appear as a reversal or credit rather than a separate deposit. Keep the case open until the amount is visible and any recurring charge is stopped.
Message template
Please cancel and refund my purchase of [course name], order [number], bought on [date] for [amount]. I am requesting the refund under your published refund policy. Please confirm cancellation of any renewal and return the payment to the original payment method. I have not used the course since submitting this request. Please provide a written decision and refund reference.
Replace the bracketed text with the actual details before sending. If you did use the course, change the non-use sentence to a truthful description of what you accessed.

Subscriptions: cancel renewal and then pursue any refund
Recurring billing creates two separate tasks. First, prevent the next charge. Second, request money back for a charge that already occurred. Use the subscription controls in the account that appears on your receipt. If the subscription was bought through a marketplace, cancel it there rather than only inside the course app.
Take a screenshot showing the cancellation confirmation and the next-renewal status. Coursera’s support guidance specifically tells learners who no longer want a subscription to cancel it to end future payments. A cancellation confirmation is evidence that later charges were not authorized, but it is not by itself proof that the current period qualifies for a refund.
Consumer-law rights are regional, not worldwide
There is no single international refund deadline for online courses. A provider’s voluntary policy can be more generous than local law, while statutory remedies may apply even when a policy window has expired. Check the law for the country where you bought and used the service, and distinguish a defective or misdescribed course from simply changing your mind.

EU and UK withdrawal rules described by Coursera
Coursera’s current terms describe a 14-day withdrawal period for EU and UK users, counted from the start of access to the applicable subscription. The terms also say the right can be forfeited after full performance or when access begins with the required express consent. Therefore, submit the request before consuming the service and state whether you gave that consent at checkout.
UK Consumer Rights Act 2015
For qualifying statutory breaches involving digital content, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires the trader to refund without undue delay and within 14 days after agreeing that the consumer is entitled. The refund must use the same payment method unless the consumer expressly agrees otherwise, and no refund fee may be imposed. This remedy addresses a statutory failure, such as content not conforming to the contract; it is not an automatic right to return every course merely because you changed your mind.
United States credit-card disputes
For a U.S. credit-card billing error or a service that was not delivered as agreed, Federal Trade Commission guidance says to contact the seller quickly and send a written dispute to the card issuer within 60 days of the first statement showing the error. The issuer generally acknowledges the dispute within 30 days and resolves it within 90 days. Send the dispute in the issuer’s required written format, keep a copy, and continue paying undisputed portions of the bill.
A card dispute is not a shortcut around a valid no-refund policy. Describe the actual problem: an unauthorized charge, a continuing charge after cancellation, or a service that materially was not delivered as agreed. Include your seller contact attempts and supporting documents.
Unauthorized or continuing subscription charges
For a charge you did not authorize or that continued after you cancelled, FTC guidance recommends cancelling with the company, retaining records, monitoring statements, and disputing the charge with the credit or debit card company. Credit-card protections are generally stronger than debit-card protections, so notify the financial institution promptly and ask which deadline and documentation rules apply to your account.

- Read the reason, not just the outcome. A denial may cite elapsed time, access, downloads, a subscription exclusion, a marketplace transaction, or a payment-method rule. Each calls for a different response.
- Reply once with precise evidence. Quote the relevant policy sentence, give the order number, state the amount of content accessed, and attach the confirmation of cancellation or the description mismatch. Ask for a written final decision.
- Escalate through the correct owner. If the provider says the marketplace processed the payment, open the marketplace case. If the provider keeps billing after cancellation, contact the card issuer without waiting for another cycle.
- Use statutory or card remedies when their conditions fit. A UK digital-content breach, a U.S. credit-card billing error, or an unauthorized recurring charge is different from dissatisfaction with a course that otherwise matched its description.
- Protect your deadlines. The U.S. written-dispute window is 60 days from the first statement showing the error. Other countries and payment instruments have different limits. Do not let prolonged support correspondence consume the available legal period.
Do not exaggerate, threaten staff, or open multiple contradictory cases. A clear chronology—purchase, access, cancellation, request, response, and charge dates—makes the strongest record.
Common mistakes that weaken a refund request
- Waiting until the policy window ends: Submit first and explain later; a pending support conversation is safer than an unsubmitted intention.
- Continuing to consume the course: Further viewing, downloads, or graded work can undermine eligibility where substantial access matters.
- Using the wrong channel: A provider may not control an App Store, Google Play, or marketplace charge.
- Confusing cancellation with refund: Turn off renewal and separately request reimbursement for the charge already made.
- Requesting store credit when cash matters: State that you want the original payment method, then check whether the policy permits another form for your payment type.
- Failing to preserve the purchase-date policy: Save a copy of the terms and receipt because policies can change after purchase.
- Disputing a legitimate charge inaccurately: Card issuers need a factual billing-error or non-delivery explanation, not a claim that you never authorized a purchase you did make.
- Ignoring small recurring charges: A low-price renewal can repeat. Cancel immediately and monitor the statement until the next cycle passes.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist before closing the case:
- Seller of record and payment channel identified
- Course name, order number, date, amount, currency, and account email recorded
- Refund deadline and exclusions checked for the purchased product
- Usage stopped while the request is pending
- Subscription renewal cancelled separately, if applicable
- Request submitted through the official provider or marketplace route
- Confirmation number, screenshots, emails, and policy copy saved
- Refund destination confirmed as original payment method or documented credit
- Bank or card statement monitored for the expected credit
- Escalation deadline noted, including the U.S. 60-day written-dispute rule when applicable
What to expect after approval
The provider may mark the course as inaccessible immediately, send a refund reference, or issue account credit instead of cash under the applicable payment rule. Keep access disabled and do not repurchase while the transaction is being reversed. If the provider says the refund is complete but it does not appear, give the payment system the stated processing period, then contact the provider with the refund reference and your payment institution with the transaction date.
For Coursera refunds covered by its current terms, the stated processing estimate is 7–10 business days. That is a processing estimate, not a promise that every bank will post the credit on the same day. Other platforms and marketplaces may not state a comparable period, so ask for the expected posting date in writing.
Bottom line: act quickly, use the right owner, and document everything
Your best chance of getting money back is to identify the merchant, stop using the course, submit through the official route before the applicable deadline, and request a refund to the original payment method. Udemy’s current policy gives eligible individual courses a 30-day window; Coursera’s current terms describe a 14-day EU/UK withdrawal period with access-related limits; marketplace purchases follow the marketplace’s rules; and statutory or card-dispute remedies depend on your location and the facts. If a seller refuses, preserve the written record and escalate before your legal or card-provider deadline expires.
