How to Report YouTube Phishing Videos, Fake Channels, and Impersonation

Report the specific phishing video or Short first, then report any channel impersonating a person or organization. Open the content, select More → Report, choose the closest violation, and add a concise explanation when YouTube offers a details field. A channel report is separate: it covers the channel’s identity and profile features, not every video on it.

If you clicked the link or entered a password, treat that as an account-security incident. Stop interacting with the message, recover and secure the associated Google Account, and only then undo unauthorized YouTube changes.

What to do in the first few minutes

Phishing on YouTube often combines a convincing channel identity with a link that leads away from YouTube. The apparent creator, company, or support account may use copied branding, a familiar-looking handle, a private video, or a description that promises monetization help. Reporting the content helps YouTube review it, but reporting is not an automatic takedown.

  1. Do not open the suspicious destination again. Do not download a file from it or enter a Google, YouTube, payment, or creator-dashboard password.
  2. Record enough context to identify the item: the video or Short URL, channel name and handle, the wording of the lure, and any unusual request. Keep screenshots if the page may change.
  3. Report the individual video or Short in YouTube’s menu.
  4. Report the channel separately if it is pretending to represent someone else.
  5. If you supplied credentials, downloaded a file, or see unfamiliar account activity, begin Google Account recovery and security steps immediately. Content reporting does not secure an account.

Use the route that matches the thing you are reporting. A suspicious video, an impersonating channel, a deceptive comment, a privacy violation, and a legal complaint are reviewed through different pathways.

How to report a phishing video or Short

Report every video that contains a phishing link or deceptive claim. YouTube’s channel review does not automatically inspect the channel’s videos, so a channel complaint cannot substitute for item-level reports.

Desktop or mobile browser

  1. Open the offending video.
  2. Select More beneath the video, then choose Report.
  3. Select the reason that most closely describes the conduct. Choose the option relating to scams, phishing, spam, or deceptive practices when it is available in your interface.
  4. Describe the material fact briefly: identify the link, explain what it promises, and state why it appears to be impersonating a person or organization. Include the relevant URL or wording if the form accepts additional details.
  5. Submit the report and repeat the process for each other video or Short involved.

Reporting a Short

Open the Short’s own options menu and choose Report. YouTube’s documented Short-report flow can provide an additional-details field. Use it to explain exactly where the suspicious link or claim appears rather than writing a general accusation. A concise description helps reviewers understand what to inspect.

What happens after submission

YouTube says reported videos are reviewed around the clock. The report is a flag for review, not a removal command. As YouTube’s reporting instructions put it: “When content is reported, it’s not automatically taken down.” If reviewers find no policy violation, the video can remain available. Do not promise that multiple reports will guarantee removal.

How to report a fake or impersonating channel

Use the channel-level report when the account itself is pretending to be another creator, company, public figure, or organization. Open the channel page and select the channel-report option shown in the page’s menu. Explain who the channel appears to represent, which identity elements are copied, and how the presentation could mislead viewers.

Information worth including

  • The channel name, handle, and URL.
  • The person, organization, or creator whose identity appears to be copied.
  • Copied profile imagery, branding, username, description, or other identity markers.
  • A short explanation of the deception, such as a false support account directing viewers to a credential form.
  • Links to specific videos that also need item-level reports.

YouTube’s impersonation policy covers deceptive copying of branding, usernames, content, or channel identity. It also addresses some AI-generated likeness or voice uses when they are intended to make viewers think a person owns or authorizes the material. Unauthorized impersonation that may mislead viewers and harm the community is not allowed.

Why the channel report is not enough

YouTube says channel review examines channel features such as the profile image, handle, and description. It does not review the channel’s videos for policy violations. Report each phishing video or Short from its own page, even when you have already reported the channel.

Choosing the correct reporting route

What you see Where to report What reviewers examine Important limit
A video or Short containing a phishing URL or deceptive offer That item’s More → Report menu The specific video, its link, claims, and surrounding context A channel report does not replace this report
A channel pretending to be a creator, person, company, or organization The report option on the channel page Profile image, handle, description, and other channel identity features Videos are not automatically reviewed as part of the channel review
A suspicious comment The comment’s own menu and report control The individual comment and its conduct Report the associated video separately if it also contains a phishing lure
A suspicious Community post The post’s own menu and report control The individual post Use channel reporting when the broader channel identity needs context
Personal information or nonconsensual use of a person’s likeness or voice YouTube’s privacy complaint route The privacy or likeness issue described in the complaint Use this route because it fits the issue; it is not a substitute for a phishing report when a scam link is also present
A legal claim The applicable YouTube legal webform The legal issue specified by that form YouTube warns that misuse of legal forms may result in account termination

How phishing lures are disguised on YouTube

Creator-targeted scams can arrive as apparently official messages or private videos about monetization, sponsorships, channel problems, or similar subjects. A copied channel name can make the invitation look legitimate even when the linked channel is not connected to the real organization. The description may send you to a malicious download or a page designed to steal credentials.

Google’s YouTube Phishing guidance states: “Please note that YouTube will never communicate with creators in such a way.” An unexpected private video, direct message, or business proposal that asks you to follow an external link should therefore be treated as untrusted until you verify it through a contact method you found independently.

Warning signs to check before interacting

  • The channel uses a familiar logo or name but has a different handle, history, or contact information.
  • The message creates urgency around monetization, copyright, verification, or account suspension.
  • The link leads to a download, a sign-in page, or a form requesting account details.
  • The sender asks for a password, recovery code, cookie, payment information, or remote access.
  • The message arrives through an unusual channel, such as a private video description, rather than a normal account notification.

Do not test a suspicious URL by opening it “just to see.” Report the item using YouTube’s controls and verify legitimate business messages through contact details obtained independently of the message.

If you clicked the link or entered credentials

Content reporting and account recovery solve different problems. A report asks YouTube to review the content; it does not revoke a stolen session, change a password, or remove an attacker from your account.

If you entered a password or other account information

  1. Stop using the suspicious page and close it.
  2. From a device and browser you trust, start Google Account recovery and security procedures.
  3. Change the affected password to a unique one and follow Google’s prompts to review account access, recovery options, and recent activity.
  4. Review connected applications and remove access you do not recognize.
  5. Turn on two-step verification. YouTube recommends a passkey as a second verification method against phishing.
  6. After the Google Account is secured, inspect YouTube for unauthorized changes and undo them.

If a file was downloaded

Do not open or run an unexpected file. Disconnect the affected device from sensitive work if appropriate, use your operating system’s security tools or your organization’s incident process, and complete Google Account security steps from a separate trusted device. The YouTube report remains useful, but it cannot clean a device or prove that an account is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you can no longer sign in

Use Google Account recovery first, as YouTube directs creators to do when access may have been lost. Once access is restored, inspect the channel and revert changes you did not make. Signs of compromise can include changed profile or account details and videos uploaded without the owner’s knowledge.

Recovering a compromised YouTube channel

Secure the associated Google Account before attempting to repair the channel. Otherwise, an attacker who still controls the account can undo your changes.

  1. Complete Google’s account-recovery and security checks.
  2. Confirm that the password, recovery methods, and two-step verification settings belong to you.
  3. Review active sessions and connected apps; remove unfamiliar access.
  4. Check the YouTube channel’s name, handle, profile image, description, links, permissions, and uploaded videos.
  5. Revert unauthorized edits and remove scam uploads or descriptions.
  6. Tell collaborators or viewers through a trusted channel if the account sent deceptive messages while compromised.

Document what changed and when. That record can help you explain the incident in a support or reporting form without guessing about the attacker’s actions.

Preventing future phishing and impersonation

Verify business messages independently

If someone proposes a brand deal, sponsorship, or monetization service, find the organization’s contact information independently rather than using the details in the message. Confirm the proposal through that separate route before opening attachments or links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remember what YouTube will not request

YouTube’s Channel security tips state: “YouTube will never ask for your password, email address, or other account information in an email, message or phone call.” Treat any request for those details as fraudulent, even when the sender uses YouTube branding.

Strengthen account recovery

  • Enable two-step verification and use a passkey as the second verification method where supported.
  • Keep recovery options current and inaccessible to other people.
  • Review connected apps periodically and remove services you no longer use.
  • Use a unique password and never reuse it on a third-party site reached from a YouTube message.
  • Limit channel permissions to people who need them and remove former collaborators.

Troubleshooting reports

The report menu is missing

Open the individual video, Short, comment, post, or channel page rather than a search-result card or embedded player. Menu labels and placement can change between the YouTube app, mobile browser, and desktop site; look for the item’s own options menu and the Report command.

The form does not show the exact word “phishing”

Choose the closest available violation and explain the phishing behavior in the details field when one is offered. Identify the link, the false claim, and the identity being copied. Do not select a legal or privacy route merely because its wording seems broader.

You have several related items

Submit separate reports for each violating video or Short, then submit one channel report if the account is impersonating someone. A clear, item-specific explanation is more useful than submitting the same text repeatedly without identifying the content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The content remains online

Remaining online does not show that the report failed. YouTube reviews reports and may leave content available when reviewers do not find a policy violation. If the item contains a different issue, use the route that matches that issue instead of repeatedly filing an unrelated report.

What a strong report says

Keep the explanation factual and easy to verify. A useful description answers four questions:

  • What: Which video, Short, channel, comment, or post is involved?
  • Where: Where does the suspicious link or copied identity appear?
  • Why deceptive: What person or organization is being imitated, and what does the link ask viewers to do?
  • Risk: Does it request credentials, a download, payment, or another sensitive action?

Do not include your password, recovery code, private messages, or other secrets in a report. YouTube needs the facts needed to locate and assess the content, not the credentials the scammer requested.

Cost, equipment, and realistic expectations

Reporting a video, Short, channel, comment, or post is a free YouTube workflow. You do not need to buy a subscription, pay a fee, or own special hardware to submit a report. A physical FIDO2-compatible security key can be an optional way to use passkey-based protection, but YouTube’s guidance does not name a model or require a hardware key for reporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical value of a report is that it flags content for review. It is not a guaranteed takedown, a promise of a personal response, or a substitute for securing an exposed account. YouTube says reviews occur around the clock, yet content may remain available when reviewers find no policy violation. Repeating the same report does not create a removal guarantee; identify each separate item and provide the clearest facts once.

Examples of the right route

A private monetization video links to a download

Report that private video from its own menu, describe the claimed monetization offer and the download link, and report the channel if its name or branding copies a real company or creator. Do not open the download. If you entered credentials, begin Google Account recovery immediately.

A fake support channel uses a creator’s logo

Report the channel for impersonation and include the copied profile image, handle, description, and the creator it claims to represent. Then open each video that directs viewers to a sign-in form and file a separate video report for each one.

An AI-generated voice claims to be a public figure

If the likeness or voice is used to make viewers think the person authorized the material, explain that context in the channel or item report. If personal information or nonconsensual likeness use is the central issue, use YouTube’s privacy complaint route as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A scam link appears in a comment or Community post

Use the comment’s or post’s own report control. Also report the associated video if it contains its own phishing lure, and report the channel when its overall identity is deceptive.

After you submit

Keep the URLs, handles, screenshots, and a short timeline in a safe record. That information lets you identify additional uploads or explain unauthorized changes without revisiting the suspicious page. Continue checking your Google Account’s recent activity, recovery options, connected applications, and two-step verification settings if you interacted with the lure. If a channel was compromised, tell collaborators or viewers through a trusted route so they do not follow messages sent during the incident.

Bottom line for each situation

  • Phishing video or Short: Report that item through More → Report, select the closest violation, and add specific details.
  • Impersonating channel: Report the channel from its page and separately report every violating video.
  • Suspicious comment or post: Use that item’s own report control; add a channel report when the broader identity is deceptive.
  • Privacy or likeness abuse: Use the privacy complaint route.
  • Legal issue: Use the appropriate legal form carefully.
  • Clicked link or exposed credentials: Recover and secure the Google Account first, then repair the YouTube channel and report the scam content.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I report a phishing video on YouTube?

Open the video, choose More → Report, select the closest scam, phishing, spam, or deceptive-practice reason available, and add the suspicious URL, claim, and copied identity in the details field when offered. Report every affected video separately.

How do I report a fake YouTube channel?

Open the channel page and use its channel-report option. Explain which person or organization it imitates and identify copied branding, handle, profile image, description, or other identity features. Report the channel’s videos separately because channel review does not automatically examine them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will YouTube automatically remove a reported video?

No. YouTube says a report is a flag for review, not an automatic takedown. Reported videos are reviewed around the clock, but a video can remain available if reviewers do not find a policy violation.

What should I do if I clicked a YouTube phishing link?

Stop using the page, do not download or run files, and do not enter more information. From a trusted device, begin Google Account recovery and security checks, change exposed passwords, review sessions and connected apps, enable two-step verification with a passkey where supported, and then repair unauthorized YouTube changes.

What if I entered my Google password on the phishing page?

Treat the account as potentially compromised. Secure and recover the associated Google Account first, review recovery options and recent activity, remove unfamiliar app access, and inspect the channel for changed details or unauthorized uploads. Reporting the video does not revoke an attacker’s access.

Should I use a privacy or legal form for a phishing scam?

Use the ordinary video, channel, comment, or post report for phishing and impersonation. Use a privacy complaint for personal information or nonconsensual likeness or voice use, and a legal webform for a genuine legal claim. YouTube warns that misuse of legal forms may result in account termination.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a security key or paid service to report phishing?

No. YouTube reporting is free and does not require special equipment. A FIDO2-compatible security key is only an optional passkey-protection method; YouTube does not require a particular key or model.

Why is the phishing video still online after I reported it?

A report does not guarantee removal. YouTube may leave content available when reviewers find no policy violation. Preserve the item’s URL and report other violating videos individually rather than submitting duplicate reports without specific details.

The Bottom Line

Report the exact phishing video or Short, report an impersonating channel separately, and use comment, privacy, or legal routes only when they match the issue. If you clicked a link or shared credentials, Google Account recovery and security come first; channel cleanup and content reporting come afterward.
