For AY 2026–27, first reconcile what YouTube credited and paid, then determine the correct income classification from your activity and agreements. If the receipts are business or profession income, the Income Tax Department identifies ITR-3 as the relevant form; ITR-4 is available only to eligible taxpayers using an allowed presumptive computation.
What counts as YouTube membership and Super Chat income?
Channel memberships are recurring payments by members in exchange for channel perks. Super Chat lets fans pay to highlight messages during a live chat or Premiere. YouTube lists India among the locations where eligible creators can use Super Chat and Super Stickers, subject to eligibility and policy conditions.

YouTube warns creators that they may owe tax in their country of residence on income from monetized videos. That warning makes Indian tax assessment relevant to an Indian resident creator; it does not, by itself, decide which Indian income-tax head applies to a particular creator’s receipts.
Reconcile YouTube earnings before filing
Do not assume the amount viewers paid is the same as the amount deposited in your bank account. YouTube says YPP creators are paid through AdSense for YouTube. In its monthly cycle, prior-month earnings are finalized and posted to the payments account; payment details can show adjustments and applicable tax deductions.
Collect these records
- YouTube channel revenue reports for memberships, Super Chat and related monetization.
- AdSense for YouTube transaction history and payment details, including adjustments and deductions.
- Bank or other payout records that show the amounts actually received.
- The partner agreement that applies to your channel, including relevant revenue-share terms.
- AdSense tax statements and evidence of any tax withheld outside India.
- Records supporting your classification and any expenses or other figures you report, as appropriate to your circumstances.
Understand gross activity, platform share and payout
YouTube’s Commerce Product Module help page says the creator share for memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks is 70% of net revenues, while directing partners to their own agreement for exact revenue-share terms. This is platform contract information, not an Indian tax rate or a rule that determines your taxable income. Check your agreement and account statements rather than applying the 70% figure to every transaction or treating it as a tax calculation.
#1 Best Overall
Reconcile the platform reports, adjustments, agreement and payout records so you can explain how the reported figures relate to the cash received. Keep the supporting statements with your tax records.
Choose the ITR form based on the income classification
The form choice follows the taxpayer’s income and eligibility; YouTube does not prescribe an Indian ITR form for these features. The sources available for AY 2026–27 describe the forms but do not establish that all membership or Super Chat receipts belong under one particular Indian income-tax head. Determine the classification from your facts, activity, agreements and applicable Indian law, rather than from the feature’s name or payout route alone.

| Form | When it may fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ITR-3 | The Income Tax Department describes it as the return for individuals and HUFs with profits and gains of business or profession. | Use this route if your receipts are properly classified as business or profession income and the other form rules fit your case. |
| ITR-4 | An optional simplified return for certain eligible taxpayers using an allowed presumptive computation. | For AY 2026–27, the Department’s overview includes conditions such as resident status, total income up to ₹50 lakh, and presumptive income under sections 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE, along with exclusions. The available guidance does not establish that YouTube receipts qualify under any one of those sections. Check the actual activity and all eligibility rules before choosing it. |
| ITR-2 | For income other than profits and gains of business or profession. | It is not the form for a return that includes business or profession income. |
These descriptions are not a ruling that every creator’s receipts are business income, nor do they replace checking the current AY 2026–27 form instructions and eligibility conditions when filing.
File and report the income using your documented facts
- Establish the relevant assessment year. This article covers AY 2026–27. Confirm that this is the year you are filing and check the applicable current form instructions.
- Reconcile channel activity to AdSense and payout records. Match revenue reports to the transaction history, payment details, adjustments and bank records. Preserve the partner agreement used to interpret the revenue share.
- Determine the Indian tax classification. Consider the nature and regularity of your creator activity, agreements and other facts under applicable law. The platform’s labels and payment statements alone do not decide the income-tax head.
- Select a form only after classification. If the income is business or profession income, assess ITR-3. Consider ITR-4 only if you meet every condition and the activity qualifies for the presumptive computation you intend to use. If the income is not business or profession income, assess the applicable form, including ITR-2 where its rules fit.
- Report figures consistently with the return’s applicable schedules and instructions. Use the current form and official filing guidance for the correct reporting fields; do not force the receipts into a field based only on the words “membership” or “Super Chat.”
- Retain a reconciliation file. Keep the reports, agreements, payment evidence, tax statements and working papers used to reach the reported amount and classification.
If your income classification, presumptive eligibility or reporting field is uncertain, get advice from an Indian tax professional familiar with creator income before filing. The right answer can turn on facts not established by the platform’s general help pages.
Separate Indian tax from US withholding and GST questions
US tax withheld by Google
Google requires YPP creators to provide tax information and says it may withhold tax on earnings from US viewers. Google also says that, if tax information is missing, it may have to deduct up to 24% of total earnings worldwide. That is a conditional platform statement, not the amount every Indian creator will have withheld. Check your own AdSense tax information and transaction statements.
US withholding does not replace assessing or reporting any Indian tax liability that applies to you. Whether you can claim foreign tax credit in India, and what documentation or filing steps apply, depends on your circumstances. The platform’s withholding guidance does not resolve an individual credit claim; preserve the relevant statements and obtain current advice if you intend to claim one.

GST treatment
Do not automatically describe a YouTube payout as an export of services, or assume GST registration or an LUT is or is not required. The result may depend on which Google entity contracts with you, recipient and place-of-supply facts, consideration, registration status and current GST rules. General CBIC material on exports or registration does not settle an individual creator’s position. Seek current, individualized GST advice before deciding how to treat the arrangement.

Keep a separate record of how your channel is operated
If your channel also runs uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube live stream, keep operational records distinct from tax documents. StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube after you upload a recording or playlist and add your YouTube stream key; the computer does not need to stay on. It does not determine how your earnings are classified or reported. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start its first free day with no card.
