The right place to report a problem depends on what happened and where: contact the labour inspectorate about health and safety at an apprentice’s employer workplace; the Défenseur des droits or the police and gendarmerie reporting service about discrimination; and the regional apprenticeship pedagogical-control contact about teaching that may not meet diploma requirements. For an urgent danger, move to safety and seek emergency help if needed. Problems at a CFA or other training centre do not automatically fall under workplace inspection, so ask the relevant local authority to direct centre-building safety concerns.
First identify the site and the problem
An apprenticeship usually involves training at both the employer’s workplace and a CFA (centre de formation d’apprentis). A vocational-school learner is not necessarily an apprentice or an employee, and the reporting route depends on that distinction. Note whether the incident occurred at the employer, the CFA, or another training site, then match the concern to the authority whose remit fits it.

What to do if there is an immediate danger
Move away from the danger and seek emergency help when needed. Notify the responsible centre or employer promptly. For a health or safety risk at an employer workplace, the labour inspectorate is an established reporting route. For danger inside a CFA or other training-centre building, the sources do not establish one nationwide safety-inspection channel covering every centre; contact the local DREETS/DDETS or relevant education authority and ask it to direct the concern.
How to report unsafe conditions at an employer workplace
Contact the labour inspectorate responsible for the area if the concern involves unhealthy conditions or a health or safety risk at the apprentice’s employer workplace. The Ministry of Labour says the inspectorate advises workers and checks workplaces. Find the relevant local unit through the DREETS/DDETS service directory or the labour-inspection contact route.
#1 Best Overall
An apprentice can also tell the employer and CFA, particularly when the risk affects training across both sites. The inspectorate’s role is not to settle an individual employment-contract dispute; that type of dispute goes to the labour court, or conseil de prud’hommes. The inspectorate is not a universal reporting channel for every concern on every vocational-school campus.
How to report discrimination
Contact the Défenseur des droits
The Défenseur des droits handles discrimination across fields, including education. Anyone who experiences or witnesses discrimination can contact it confidentially through antidiscriminations.fr. Its assistance is free. Contacting the Défenseur des droits does not pause legal limitation periods, so check deadlines promptly if you may take legal action.
Use the police and gendarmerie reporting service
A victim or witness can also use the official online police/gendarmerie discrimination reporting service, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It connects the person with an officer trained in discrimination who can discuss next steps, including whether to file a complaint. The officer can arrange an intervention if one is considered necessary.
How to raise concerns about apprenticeship teaching
If the concern is that apprenticeship teaching does not provide the knowledge or skills expected for the diploma, ask about the regional apprenticeship pedagogical-control process. National guidance describes a written request addressed to the regional prefect, which transmits it to the relevant certifying ministry; the DREETS is commonly the local point of contact. The process can examine training at both the CFA and employer sites.
Rank #3
Find the appropriate contact through the DREETS/DRIEETS or relevant rectorat for the learner’s location, and identify the certificate or diploma being prepared. A request is assessed: it may not lead to an inspection, and concerns outside the mission’s remit may be redirected. The process is not the same as a general review of a training provider.
When the concern is about a training provider more broadly
For an administrative concern about a vocational training provider, the regional service for control of vocational training providers may be relevant. Its remit and contact process differ from those of the apprenticeship pedagogical-control mission. Check the regional instructions rather than assuming a contact form or email published by one region applies elsewhere. In Hauts-de-France, for example, DREETS describes the provider-control service separately from apprenticeship pedagogical control.

Prepare a clear report
There is no universal evidence checklist prescribed across these reporting routes, but a concise, factual record can help the authority understand the issue. Include:
- The site involved: employer workplace, CFA, or another training centre.
- Dates, times and locations, and what condition or conduct you observed.
- People involved and anyone who witnessed the incident.
- Any injury, continuing risk, or immediate danger.
- What you have already reported internally and any written response.
- What outcome you are seeking: stopping a danger, investigating discriminatory treatment, or reviewing training delivery.
Keep relevant emails, messages, course materials and responses. Preserve photos only when taken lawfully. State the certificate or diploma being prepared when raising a pedagogical-control concern. Describe what happened without assuming that one authority can investigate every type of complaint.
Use the local contact for your region
Regional contacts and processes vary. For apprenticeship pedagogical control, consult the relevant DREETS/DRIEETS or rectorat and name the certificate involved. For workplace safety, use the local labour-inspection contact route. For a training-centre building risk that does not fit an established workplace-inspection route, ask the local DREETS/DDETS or education authority to direct you. This is general information, not an assessment of an individual case.
