Do not reply to, click, or call anything in an unexpected message. On an iPhone or Android phone, use the messaging or phone app’s report control when it is available, then block the sender separately if you want to stop further contact. In the United States, forward unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM), report scams to ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and use DoNotCall.gov for unwanted calls when no financial loss is involved. An FCC complaint is an additional route for unwanted calls, texts, and imposter scams.
Report, block, filter, and screen are different actions
A report sends information to a service that may use it to investigate or improve spam detection. Blocking tells your phone or messaging service to stop delivering messages or calls from a specific sender. Filtering moves likely spam away from your main inbox. Screening asks an unknown caller to identify themselves before your phone rings, or silences the call altogether.

Use the report option only if you are comfortable sharing the information described by your app or carrier. If you only want to stop contact, blocking without reporting is usually available.

Before reporting a suspicious call or text
- Do not tap a link, open an attachment, reply, or call a number shown in an unexpected message.
- Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, Social Security numbers, payment details, or remote-access permission.
- If the message claims to be from a bank, delivery company, employer, government office, or another business, find that organization’s website or phone number independently. Use the contact details you already trust, not the details in the message.
- Keep the message, caller-ID display, voicemail, and any transaction record until you have finished reporting. A screenshot can help with an FCC complaint, but do not forward a suspicious link to other people.
How do I report a scam text on my iPhone?
Apple’s current iPhone instructions apply when Messages recognizes an unknown sender and provides a spam-reporting control. The exact option depends on whether the message is unopened or opened.

For an unopened message
- Open Messages without opening the suspicious conversation.
- Swipe left on the conversation.
- Tap Delete and Report Spam.
- Confirm the deletion if Messages asks.
This removes the conversation from your device and reports it through the channel Apple or your carrier supports for that message type.
For a message you already opened
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Scroll to the bottom and look for Report Spam.
- Tap Report Spam, then choose Delete and Report Spam when offered.
For an iMessage, Apple receives the report and sender information. For SMS, MMS, or RCS, the option can depend on your carrier and country or region. Some conversations will show no report link at all.
If “Report Spam” is missing
Do not reply just to create a report. Block the conversation from its contact or details screen, then use your carrier’s reporting method or an appropriate official agency. The absence of an in-app button does not mean the message is safe; it means that this message type, carrier, region, or software configuration does not expose that control.

Report and block separately
Apple cautions that reporting alone does not stop the sender. After reporting, open the sender’s details and choose the available Block Caller or equivalent control if you want to prevent further messages and calls from that number. Blocking one number cannot stop a scammer who changes or spoofs numbers.
How do I report spam texts on Android?
Google Messages uses a combined block-and-report flow. Android phones can use different messaging apps, and manufacturers may change menu names, so the labels below may not appear exactly on every device.

- Open Google Messages.
- Touch and hold the suspicious conversation.
- Tap Block.
- Select Report spam.
- Confirm the action.

- Open the conversation.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Details.
- Tap Block & report spam, then confirm.
What Google Messages may submit
Google says the spammer’s number and recent incoming messages can be submitted to Google. A separate spam-reporting conversation may send the number and the most recent message to your wireless carrier. Read the confirmation screen before accepting if you want to see what your version of the app will share.
Reporting is optional. If you do not want to submit a report, use the app’s block-only choice when available. If your phone uses a different messaging app, look for a menu item such as Report spam, Report junk, or Block; consult that app’s help documentation rather than assuming Google Messages’ workflow applies.

Not always. On iPhone, Delete and Report Spam reports and removes the conversation, but Apple says reporting alone does not stop the sender. On Google Messages, the normal flow combines blocking with reporting, while some versions also offer a report option without the same controls. Check the confirmation wording and block the sender explicitly when you want contact stopped.
A report can share message content, a phone number, or caller information with a platform or carrier. A block is a local or service-level delivery control. Neither action proves who is behind a caller-ID number, because scammers can spoof displayed numbers.
Where do I report scam calls?
iPhone controls for unwanted calls
The iPhone Phone app can screen or silence unknown numbers, filter calls identified as spam, and block a particular contact or number. These settings manage what happens on your device; they do not replace a complaint to a government agency or carrier.

Open Settings, choose Apps (or scroll directly to Phone on some iOS versions), and review the available options for unknown callers, call identification, spam filtering, and blocked contacts. Labels and locations can change with iOS releases and carrier support.

Google Phone supports caller-ID and spam protection, including marking numbers as spam. If your Phone app offers Report spam, open the recent call, select the call details or three-dot menu, and use that option. Other Android dialers may place the control elsewhere or omit it. Google explains that remote numbers can contribute to caller-ID and spam determinations, so the displayed label is a screening signal, not proof of the caller’s identity.
Turn on caller-ID or spam protection in the Phone app’s settings if you want warnings or automatic filtering. Blocking and filtering reduce interruptions but do not send a federal complaint.
Can I report a scam text to my phone carrier?
In the United States, forward an unwanted text to 7726 (SPAM). This alerts participating wireless providers so they can analyze the sender and improve filtering. Forward the original message rather than replying to the scammer. Carrier reporting does not replace an FTC report when the message is an actual scam or fraud attempt.
Google Messages may also create a carrier-reporting conversation when you use Block & report spam. The confirmation can explain which number and message are being sent. Carrier participation, message types, and procedures vary outside the United States.

U.S. reporting routes for scam calls and texts
The following agencies are U.S.-specific. Choose the route that matches what happened; you can use more than one when appropriate.

An FTC complaint does not promise a personal response, immediate shutdown, or recovery of money. The agencies use reports to identify patterns and enforce laws.

For an FTC call report, include the number that received the call, the caller-ID number even if you suspect it was spoofed, any callback number the caller gave you, and the date and time if known. Add the name or organization the caller claimed to represent, the request they made, payment instructions, and any voicemail or screenshot.
Caller ID can be faked. Treat it as evidence of what appeared on your screen, not as confirmation of the scammer’s real number. Do not call the displayed number to “verify” it.
What if I clicked, replied, or shared information?
If you only clicked a link
Close the page, do not enter additional information, and update your phone and browser. If you downloaded an app or profile, remove anything you do not recognize and review account-security alerts. Change a password from the service’s trusted website or app, not from the message.
If you gave away a password or verification code
Change the affected password immediately from a known, trusted login page, then change any other account that reused it. Enable multifactor authentication, sign out other sessions, and contact the service’s official support channel. A one-time code can allow an attacker to take over an account; never share a new code with someone who contacted you unexpectedly.
If you shared bank or card information
Contact the bank, card issuer, or payment service using the number on a statement or the institution’s official website. Ask what account protection, card replacement, transfer reversal, or dispute steps apply. Report the scam to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. A spam report by itself does not recover funds.
If you lost money or shared identity information
Contact the relevant financial institution first, preserve transaction records, and file the FTC report with the details you have. Consider what additional account or identity-protection steps the affected institution recommends. There is no single recovery procedure for every type of loss, and anyone promising guaranteed recovery after a fee may be running another scam.
How to reduce repeat calls and texts after reporting
- Block the specific number or conversation after saving any evidence you need.
- Enable your phone’s spam filtering, caller-ID protection, unknown-caller screening, or unknown-sender filtering.
- Use your carrier’s official spam controls if offered, and review their privacy explanation before enabling data-sharing features.
- Do not engage with a message to “unsubscribe” unless you independently know it is a legitimate sender. An unexpected reply can confirm that your number is active.
- Review account statements and security alerts for a period after a successful scam attempt.
Call-blocking or caller-identification services may provide additional prevention, but they are optional and are not required for any reporting route described here.
Troubleshooting when a reporting option is unavailable
The iPhone report link is missing
Check whether the message is SMS, MMS, or RCS, whether the sender is already in your contacts, and whether your carrier and region support Apple’s report control. Save the evidence, block the sender, and use the carrier, 7726, FTC, or FCC route that fits your situation.
Android menus do not match
Confirm which app handles your texts and calls. Google Messages instructions do not automatically apply to a manufacturer’s messaging app, and Android Phone menus differ among devices. Update the app if appropriate, then look in the conversation or call details for Report spam and Block. If no report control exists, use your carrier or an official agency.
A report was submitted but messages continue
Reporting is not a guaranteed blocking action. Block the current sender, enable filtering, and report new numbers without replying. If the scammer is impersonating an organization, notify that organization through a trusted channel so it can warn customers or secure your account.

The Apple and Google app controls may work similarly, but text-reporting behavior depends on your country, carrier, and message type. The FTC, DoNotCall.gov, FCC, and 7726 guidance above is U.S.-specific. International readers should use their mobile carrier’s spam-reporting number and the consumer-protection, telecommunications, or cybercrime agency in their own country. Keep the same safety rules: do not click or reply, verify the claimed organization independently, and block the sender after preserving evidence.
