If you own the game, footage, music, artwork, or other copyrighted material—or are the owner’s authorized agent—save the exact upload URL and supporting evidence, identify every service hosting a copy, and submit a separate copyright notice to each service. Also notify the publisher through its official piracy or intellectual-property channel when one exists.
A viewer who does not own the rights should not file a DMCA notice in someone else’s name. Preserve the URL, use the platform’s ordinary reporting tool, and alert the rights holder instead. A copyright takedown is a legal request, not a general complaint, so accuracy, authority, and complete identification of both the leaked upload and the original work matter.

What a copyright takedown does—and who may file one
A copyright takedown notice asks an online service to remove or disable access to material that uses a protected work without authorization. In the United States, the process is commonly associated with Section 512 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The U.S. Copyright Office describes a takedown as “a request made by a copyright owner to an online service provider (OSP) to have material that infringes their copyright-protected work removed from a website or other online service.”

The notice is normally sent by the copyright owner or a legally authorized agent. Ownership can involve more than the game itself: a studio may own the game code and art, while a publisher controls distribution, a composer owns a soundtrack, or a contractor retains rights in a trailer or promotional video. Confirm who controls the specific material before signing a notice.

U.S. copyright registration is not required before sending a takedown request. Registration is generally required before filing a U.S. infringement lawsuit concerning a U.S. work, however. Court remedies, foreign claims, and contractual rights can involve different rules, so a serious commercial dispute may require advice from an intellectual-property lawyer.
What a non-owner can do
- Save the direct URL, account name, date, title, and screenshots without reposting the leak.
- Use the service’s ordinary report function for piracy or intellectual-property abuse, if available.
- Send the evidence privately to the rights holder or publisher.
- Do not sign a legal notice, impersonate the owner, or claim authority you do not have.
Preserve evidence without amplifying the leak
Take an evidence-first approach. The goal is to give the host enough information to locate the material while avoiding additional distribution.
Record the upload precisely
- Copy the complete URL, including the channel, post, video, clip, or item identifier.
- Record the platform, channel or account name, upload date shown by the service, title, and any visible timestamps.
- Describe which portions appear to contain the protected game, footage, soundtrack, screenshots, or other work.
- Capture dated screenshots showing the page, account, title, and relevant frames.
- Where lawful and safe, retain an internal evidence copy or a cryptographic hash. Do not publish the copy or create a mirror.
- Log when you discovered the material and note later changes, deletions, reuploads, or edits.
Keep the evidence in a restricted case folder. Publicly linking to a leak can increase its reach and make it harder for a publisher to contain.
Check authorization and possible lawful use first
A leak may look unauthorized and still require a careful rights check. Review the publisher’s gameplay or fan-content policy, press or review permissions, music and third-party asset licenses, and any agreement that gave the uploader access. A journalist, critic, or commentator may present portions of a work for a lawful purpose in some circumstances. That does not automatically make a leak lawful, but it means the filer must have a good-faith basis for alleging infringement.
Separate the questions:
- What work is yours? Identify the game, cutscene, build, trailer, soundtrack, artwork, or recording.
- What permission exists? Check licenses, review keys, embargo terms, contracts, and published fan-content rules.
- What exactly is used? A complete unauthorized copy, a full cutscene, a soundtrack, or a short excerpt can raise different issues.
- Who may act? Confirm whether you own the rights or have written authorization to represent the owner.
The good-faith statement in a notice is a legal assertion. Do not file merely because you dislike a video, because it reveals a spoiler, or because the account is criticizing the game.
Choose the right reporting route
Use a legal notice when you are the owner or authorized agent and the service hosts material you reasonably believe is unauthorized. Use an ordinary report or publisher contact when you are a viewer without that authority.

Step-by-step takedown workflow
1. Build a private case record
Open a spreadsheet or case log before submitting anything. Give each copy a unique entry and record the host, account, URL, upload date, discovery time, evidence location, and the person responsible for the claim. This prevents one notice from being mistaken for a complete internet-wide removal.

Gather the agreement, assignment, employment record, publishing contract, or other document showing that you own the relevant work or may act for its owner. If the footage includes a separately owned soundtrack, logo, or licensed asset, determine whether another rights holder must file or join the response.
3. Identify the original work
Write a plain-language description that lets the host recognize the protected material. Include the title, version or build where relevant, approximate scene or timestamp, and an original-work URL or other identifying details if one exists. “My game was leaked” is less useful than “the upload contains the unreleased opening cinematic from the PC build, from 00:02:14 to 00:08:41.”
4. Check the host’s official legal process
Search the service’s help, legal, or terms pages for “copyright,” “DMCA,” or “designated agent.” Use the host’s own form when available. The U.S. Copyright Office maintains an online directory of designated agents for qualifying services, which can help when a service does not make its process easy to find.
5. Submit a complete notice
Enter the direct location of each infringing item, not just a home page or search result. State what original work is being used, how you know the use is unauthorized, how the host can contact you, why you are authorized to act, and provide the required declarations and signature. Keep a copy of the submitted form and any confirmation number.

6. Notify the publisher in parallel
For a commercial game, send the same factual evidence to the publisher’s official piracy or intellectual-property channel. A host can disable one upload while the publisher coordinates action against mirrors, stolen builds, or accounts operating across several services.

7. Monitor and repeat for every copy
Update the case log with submission dates, confirmations, responses, removal dates, and new mirror URLs. A successful notice on one service is not an internet-wide takedown. Owners generally must repeat the process on each site and may need to file again when a later copy appears on the same site.
What each major platform asks for
YouTube
Use YouTube’s copyright removal-request process rather than a general community report when you are the rights holder or authorized agent. Supply the video location, identify the original work, provide reliable contact information, make the good-faith and accuracy statements, and sign the request. YouTube characterizes this as a legal process. Consider the privacy consequence before filing: YouTube says the claimant’s name may appear in place of a removed video’s listing and that the claimant’s full legal name may be shared with the uploader. A company can often designate an authorized representative, but that representative should understand what information will be disclosed.
Twitch
Twitch’s copyright-claims form asks for the current date, the type of material, a URL, identification of the copyrighted work, contact information, the required good-faith statement, the accuracy-and-perjury statement, and a signature. Use the channel URL for material being transmitted live. For a recorded VOD or clip, use the direct VOD or clip URL so Twitch can locate the exact item. Twitch also lists email, postal mail, and telephone alternatives for its designated copyright agent.

Other hosts and social services
Every service has its own intake method and may distinguish between a video, a live broadcast, a file, a post, a profile, or a search result. Follow the service’s stated format and provide the smallest direct URL that identifies the infringing item. If the service offers only an ordinary report tool, use that tool and separately contact its designated agent or legal department when the published policy provides one.

- Your legal name and reliable contact information.
- A statement that you own the work or are authorized to act for the owner.
- Direct URL(s) and enough detail for the host to locate every identified upload.
- A clear description of the copyrighted work, with an original-work URL or other identifying details where available.
- A good-faith statement that the use is not authorized by the owner, the owner’s agent, or the law.
- An accuracy statement made under penalty of perjury.
- A physical or electronic signature.
- The date, platform, account name, and relevant timestamps.
Use one notice per service unless that service expressly permits multiple hosts or locations in one submission. Keep the wording factual: identify what is protected, where it appears, and why you are authorized to request removal.
Publisher reporting: why it is worth doing separately
Platform enforcement and publisher enforcement solve different parts of the problem. The host controls access to a particular upload; the publisher may recognize stolen development builds, identify the source of a leak, coordinate with several services, or protect assets that have not yet been posted.
Nintendo
Nintendo’s support materials direct ROM-site and piracy reports to its piracy-report channel and separately explain an intellectual-property notification route. Use the channel that matches the conduct and include the exact URL and evidence rather than reposting the material.
Konami
Konami’s reporting form covers illegal uploading and piracy, including videos, social posts, songs, and still images that may infringe its intellectual property. Describe the specific item and platform so the publisher can route the report correctly.
After submission: removals, counter-notices, and escalation
A valid notice may result in removal or disabled access, but the uploader may challenge it through the service’s counter-notification process. A counter-notice is not proof that the original claim was wrong; it is a formal dispute that the host must handle under its policy and applicable law. Preserve the original evidence and every message from the service.
Do not threaten the uploader, impersonate the rights holder, file duplicate claims to pressure a service, or continue asserting infringement after discovering that the use is licensed or otherwise authorized. If the dispute involves substantial commercial harm, an unidentified owner, multiple countries, employee or contractor access, or an uncertain fair-use question, consult an intellectual-property lawyer before escalating.
Common problems and how to fix them
The form rejects the URL
Replace a channel home page, search result, or shortened link with the direct video, VOD, clip, post, file, or item URL. For live material, use the channel URL only when the service specifically requests it.
The service asks who owns the original
State the legal entity or person that owns the work and explain your authority. If rights are split among a publisher, studio, composer, or contractor, obtain the necessary authorization instead of assuming that access to a build equals ownership.
The upload is gone, but mirrors remain
Keep the original case number, add each mirror as a new entry, and file with the host of each mirror. Send the updated list to the publisher’s piracy or IP channel.

Review the actual use, license terms, and applicable law. Commentary, criticism, reporting, or a short excerpt can raise lawful-use arguments. File only when you can truthfully make the required good-faith statement.
You are worried about personal information
Read the platform’s disclosure warning before filing. YouTube specifically warns that a claimant’s name may replace a removed video’s listing and that the full legal name may be shared with the uploader. Use an authorized business representative where appropriate, but never provide false information.
Organize a repeatable monitoring process
For a launch, embargo, or unreleased build, assign one person to monitor and another to approve notices when possible. Use a log with these columns:
- Case ID and discovery time
- Host, account, and direct URL
- Type of material and timestamps
- Original work and rights owner
- Evidence file or hash location
- Notice date, confirmation number, and filer
- Host response and removal date
- Mirror URLs, publisher contact, and follow-up date
This record makes it easier to prove what was reported, avoid duplicate submissions, and respond consistently if a counter-notice arrives.
