How to Report Incorrect Dietary Information on a Google Restaurant Listing

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Google Maps’ Suggest an edit flow for an incorrect dietary attribute on a restaurant listing. On a mobile device, sign in, open the restaurant, choose Suggest an edit, select the inaccurate attribute, enter the correction and submit it. Google says attribute editing is available only in some countries and regions, and the available choices vary by attribute.

If the error is attached to one dish rather than the restaurant’s general information, open that dish from the restaurant’s Menu and use its own Suggest an edit option. Restaurant owners and managers should edit the verified Business Profile and menu instead of submitting a public suggestion.

Choose the reporting route that matches the error

The location of the wrong information determines which Google workflow you should use. A dietary label shown as a restaurant-wide attribute is handled differently from a wrong dish name or an item that the restaurant no longer serves.

Where the incorrect information appears Who should use the route Google workflow Important limitation
A general restaurant attribute, such as a dietary or service detail on the place profile Customers and other Maps users Google Maps → restaurant listing → Suggest an edit → select the attribute Attribute editing is mobile-only and limited to certain countries and regions.
An individual dish or menu entry Customers and other Maps users Restaurant listing → Menu → select the dish → Suggest an edit The available reasons are tied to that dish, such as an incorrect name or a dish not served there.
The restaurant’s own profile attributes or menu Owners and managers Edit the verified Google Business Profile and its menu tools Owner menu changes can take 24–48 hours to appear.

Google’s help pages describe ordinary factual corrections separately from complaints about business conduct or policy violations. The routine edit path is the appropriate starting point when the issue is simply that a dietary detail, dish name or menu item is inaccurate.

Correct a general dietary attribute in Google Maps

Use this procedure when the wrong detail appears as a place-level attribute rather than inside the menu. Google’s instructions for editing place information are documented in its Android place-editing guide.

  1. Use a mobile device. Google says place-attribute edits can be suggested only from a mobile device. Open the Google Maps app on a phone or tablet rather than relying on the desktop website for this specific flow.
  2. Sign in to your Google account. The suggestion is submitted under your account, so make sure you are using the account whose contribution history you are comfortable associating with the edit.
  3. Open the restaurant. Search for the restaurant by name or select its marker on the map. Check that the address and listing are the correct location, particularly when a business has multiple branches.
  4. Tap “Suggest an edit.” This opens the available correction categories for that place.
  5. Select the inaccurate attribute. Choose the dietary or food-related field that is wrong. The labels and choices shown in the app depend on the attribute and the region.
  6. Enter the correction. Select the accurate value when Google provides one. If you know the existing information is wrong but cannot establish the replacement, choose Don’t know, but this is incorrect when Google offers that option for the selected attribute.
  7. Add supporting evidence when useful. Google allows a photo to be attached when it can help verify the suggestion. A current menu board, printed menu or clearly displayed restaurant information may be more useful than an unrelated image.
  8. Submit the edit. Review the restaurant, attribute and selected correction before sending it. Google then reviews the suggestion and may update the listing.

Not every attribute includes the “Don’t know, but this is incorrect” choice. If the option is absent, use the closest accurate choice available or use the dish-specific path when the error actually belongs to one menu item.

Prepare the correction before you tap submit

First identify the exact text or label that is wrong and whether it is attached to the place or to a particular dish. This prevents a menu problem from being reported as a restaurant-wide attribute. Next, confirm that the map pin, address and branch are correct. A chain may have different menus or dietary offerings at different locations, so the correction should apply to the listing you opened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only choose a replacement value you can support. If you know the displayed value is false but cannot determine the correct replacement, the dedicated Don’t know, but this is incorrect choice is the appropriate alternative when it appears. Do not guess simply to force a value into the form. The controls presented by Google are attribute-specific, so a missing choice is a limitation of that field, not a signal to use an unrelated category.

Fix an incorrect dish or menu entry

A wrong dish name, an item that does not exist, or a dish that is no longer served belongs in the dish-reporting workflow. Google explains this route in Add & explore dishes in Google Maps.

  1. Open Google Maps on your mobile device and find the restaurant listing.
  2. Open the restaurant’s Menu section.
  3. Select the dish with the inaccurate information.
  4. Choose that dish’s Suggest an edit option.
  5. Select the reason that matches the problem, such as incorrect dish name or dish not served here, then submit the report.

This is separate from changing a general restaurant attribute. For example, if a restaurant’s profile incorrectly claims a dietary option across the business, report the place attribute. If one listed entrée has the wrong name or is not offered, report the individual dish instead.

Google says it aims to post certain dish-name edits within a few days, but that is not a guarantee. Do not treat the dish workflow as an immediate replacement for confirming the information with the restaurant when you need to make a time-sensitive ordering decision.

Dish-level errors that can look like dietary errors

A dish can be confusing even when the restaurant-wide attributes are accurate. A renamed entrée, a removed item or a dish that appears in Google’s menu data but not at the restaurant should be reported against that dish. Keep the report narrow: select the displayed dish and the reason that describes the problem. If several dishes are wrong, each item may need its own dish-level correction because the reporting controls are attached to individual entries.

What restaurant owners and managers should do

If you own or manage the business, edit the verified Business Profile directly. Google provides owner tools for both profile attributes and restaurant menu items. The business-attributes guide covers attribute management, while Edit your Business Profile covers profile changes.

Update a restaurant attribute

Open the Business Profile management interface for the verified location, choose the relevant profile information or attribute section, change the value and save it. The owner route is preferable to asking customers to submit duplicate suggestions because it gives the business control over its own listing information.

Update a menu item

Use the restaurant menu editor to change, add or remove menu entries. Google’s About the menu editor explains the owner tool. Google states that owner menu changes may take 24–48 hours to appear publicly; this is an expected display window, not a promise that every edit will be visible at exactly that point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage popular dish names

Google also documents owner and customer controls for popular dish names in Manage your restaurant’s popular dish names. Use those controls when the problem concerns a dish name surfaced separately from the main menu editor.

Owners should check both surfaces after making a change: the general profile attributes and the menu or popular-dish entries. Updating one does not necessarily describe the other. A restaurant-wide attribute and an individual dish are separate records, which is why Google supplies separate editing paths.

When to attach a photo—and the privacy trade-off

A photo can make a correction easier for Google to evaluate when it shows the relevant menu wording or restaurant information. Attach one only when it directly supports the claim. Avoid adding unrelated images, screenshots that reveal private conversations, or photographs containing people who have not agreed to publication.

Google notes that photos submitted with an edit are publicly available under the contributor’s name. Consider that consequence before uploading a menu photograph, receipt or sign. If the image includes personal details, crop or exclude them when possible; do not upload material you are not comfortable making public with your account attribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What makes an evidence photo useful

The strongest image is one that clearly shows the wording connected to the correction: for example, the relevant menu line, posted dietary statement or restaurant sign. Keep the subject legible and avoid adding material that does not help Google evaluate the edit. A photo is optional, not a requirement for every suggestion, and it should never expose information you intend to keep private.

What happens after you submit a correction

Google reviews user suggestions to keep Maps accurate and says it will update users on the status of edits. A general place-attribute suggestion has no guaranteed publication deadline in Google’s instructions. It may remain under review, be accepted, be rejected or require additional information.

Keep the timing rules distinct:

  • General place attributes: Google does not publish a guaranteed turnaround time.
  • Owner menu edits: Google gives an expected display window of 24–48 hours.
  • Certain dish-name edits: Google says it aims to post them within a few days, without guaranteeing that result.

If the listing still looks wrong after submission, first confirm that you edited the correct location and selected the correct category. Submitting the same suggestion repeatedly does not create a published correction deadline.

How to interpret a delay

A delay does not by itself show that the correction was lost. Google’s general attribute guidance gives no fixed publication deadline, so the status may remain unchanged while the suggestion is reviewed. Owners have a more specific expectation for menu edits—24–48 hours—but that is still a display window rather than a guarantee. Dish-name reports have a separate “within a few days” target that also is not guaranteed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, record what you submitted and which listing you used, then check the same place profile later. Avoid treating a missing immediate change as permission to file the report through a fraud channel or to submit an unsupported replacement value.

Why the edit option may be missing

The attribute workflow is not available in your region

Google says place-attribute editing is available only in certain countries and regions. General Maps data corrections are also described as limited by location. If the attribute option does not appear, the limitation may be regional rather than a problem with your account.

You are using a desktop browser

Google specifically limits place-attribute edits to mobile devices. Move to the Google Maps app on a phone or tablet and sign in before trying again.

The selected attribute has different controls

Options vary by attribute. Some fields let you choose a corrected value; others may offer Don’t know, but this is incorrect; some may not provide that choice. Select the closest available reporting option rather than inventing a value.

The information is actually a dish error

If the wrong text appears only beside one dish, leave the general attribute editor and use the dish’s Menu → dish → Suggest an edit path. The dish workflow supplies reasons designed for menu-level problems.

You opened the wrong listing

Multiple locations can share a restaurant name. Before submitting, verify the address and map location shown in the listing. A correct edit sent to another branch will not fix the branch where you saw the dietary information.

Do not use the fraud complaint route for a normal factual correction

Google distinguishes routine edits from reports about suspicious business conduct or policy violations. Its redressal complaint route is specifically described for suspected fraudulent business names, phone numbers or URLs. An inaccurate dietary label or stale menu item is ordinarily a factual Maps correction, so start with Suggest an edit.

Use the conduct or fraud reporting process only when the situation genuinely concerns the types of suspicious information or policy issue covered by Google’s Report a business on Google Maps guidance. Choosing the wrong route can send an ordinary data correction to a process intended for a different problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Is the error displayed as a restaurant-wide attribute? Use the mobile Maps Suggest an edit flow.
  • Is the error attached to one dish, such as a wrong name or an item that is not served? Open that dish under Menu and report it there.
  • Do you own or manage the restaurant? Edit the verified Business Profile and menu directly.
  • Are you on a desktop computer? Switch to a mobile device for place-attribute suggestions.
  • Is the attribute editor unavailable? Check whether the feature is supported in your country or region and whether that particular attribute offers an edit choice.
  • Would a menu or sign photograph substantiate the correction? Attach it only if you accept that Google may publish it under your name.
  • Are you reporting ordinary inaccurate information rather than suspicious conduct? Use the edit workflow, not the fraud complaint route.
  • Have you checked the address and branch? Confirm the location before sending the suggestion.
  • Is the replacement value known? Choose it only when you can identify the accurate value; otherwise use the “Don’t know, but this is incorrect” option when available.

Examples of choosing the right correction

A restaurant-wide dietary label is wrong

Suppose the listing displays a dietary attribute that the restaurant does not claim. On mobile, open the place, choose Suggest an edit, select that attribute and submit the accurate value—or select Don’t know, but this is incorrect if Google offers it and you cannot determine the replacement. Add a relevant public photo only when it provides useful evidence.

One menu item is listed under the wrong name

Open the restaurant’s Menu, select the dish and use the dish-level Suggest an edit option. Choose the incorrect-name reason. Do not file this as a restaurant-wide dietary attribute unless the error is also displayed at the place level.

The restaurant has changed its own menu

An owner or manager should sign in to the verified Business Profile and update the menu editor. Allow the stated 24–48-hour display window before judging whether the public listing has refreshed.

The menu says a dish is available, but staff says it is not

When the problem is limited to that listed dish, select the dish under Menu and report dish not served here. This keeps the correction focused on the menu entry rather than changing an attribute that applies to the whole restaurant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for an incorrect dietary listing

Match the tool to the location of the error: mobile Maps Suggest an edit for a general attribute, the dish’s own reporting control for a menu-level mistake, and Business Profile editing tools for owners. Availability depends on region and attribute, Google reviews public suggestions without a general guaranteed deadline, and any supporting photo is published under the contributor’s name.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I report incorrect dietary information on a Google restaurant listing?

On a mobile device, sign in to Google Maps, open the restaurant, tap Suggest an edit, select the inaccurate dietary attribute, choose the correct value and submit. If Google offers Don’t know, but this is incorrect, use it when you know the displayed value is wrong but cannot identify the replacement.

Can I correct a restaurant attribute from a computer?

Google says place-attribute edits can be suggested only from a mobile device. Use the Google Maps app on a phone or tablet, and remember that attribute editing is available only in certain countries and regions.

What if only one dish has the wrong information?

Open the restaurant’s Menu, select the affected dish and use that dish’s Suggest an edit control. Choose the matching reason, such as incorrect dish name or dish not served here. This is separate from editing a restaurant-wide attribute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can restaurant owners edit dietary information themselves?

Yes. Owners and managers should edit the verified Google Business Profile directly, using the profile-attribute tools for general information and the menu editor for restaurant menu items.

How long does a Google Maps correction take?

Google gives no guaranteed publication deadline for general place-attribute suggestions. Owner menu edits may take 24–48 hours to appear. For certain dish-name edits, Google says it aims to post them within a few days, but does not guarantee that timing.

Should I upload a photo with my correction?

Add a photo only when it directly helps verify the correction, such as a clearly legible menu or sign. Google says submitted photos are publicly available under the contributor’s name, so do not upload private or sensitive material.

Why can’t I find the attribute I need to edit?

The feature may not be supported in your country or region, you may be using a desktop browser, or that particular attribute may have different controls. Google does not offer the same choices for every attribute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use Google’s fraud complaint form for a wrong dietary label?

Usually no. An inaccurate dietary attribute, stale menu entry or wrong dish name is an ordinary factual correction, so use Suggest an edit. Google’s redressal route is described for suspicious or fraudulent business names, phone numbers or URLs and other covered policy issues.

The Bottom Line

Use mobile Google Maps for a restaurant-wide dietary correction, the dish-level menu report for an individual item, and Business Profile tools if you manage the restaurant. Regional limits, attribute-specific options and non-guaranteed review times apply.
