Report misleading content in the service where you found it: use the post, video, account or message menu on a social network, and use the feedback menu beside a search result in a search engine. Save the direct link and a screenshot first, check the claim and its context, choose the closest available reason, and describe the evidence briefly. A report sends a signal for review; it does not guarantee deletion, account suspension, a reply or a change in search rankings.
Labels and buttons differ by service, device, language and country. The steps below give a reliable method without assuming that every platform offers a category called “fake news.”

What a report does—and what it does not do
A platform report is an in-product request for the service to assess an item against its rules. You can report a social post, video, profile, direct message, advertisement or live stream from the item’s own menu. The service may remove the item, add a warning or context label, reduce its distribution, restrict an account, or decide that no rule was broken.
Search feedback is different. When you flag a result in Google Search, you are giving Google information it may review to improve Search. Generic feedback is not a guaranteed takedown request, and Google may not contact you about the result. A phishing page, malware page or another specific policy problem should be sent through the separate reporting route offered for that problem.

Reporting does not automatically suspend an account on X, and X says a reporter may or may not receive an outcome. Other services make similar decisions under their own rules. Treat the report as a way to alert the service, not as proof that the claim is false or that action will follow.
Check the claim before you report it
False, incomplete and simply unpopular statements are not the same thing. A report is more useful when you can identify a factual claim and explain why reliable evidence conflicts with it.
Identify what is being asserted
- Separate a checkable statement (“the election result was changed,” “this photo was taken yesterday”) from an opinion, joke, prediction or personal experience.
- Notice whether the post presents an old event as current, quotes only part of a statement, or turns a genuine statistic into a broader conclusion.
- Check whether the account is describing fiction, satire or a role-play scenario. Satire can still be confusing when it is copied without context, but the report category may be different.
Check source, date and original context
- Open the full article, video or thread instead of relying on a headline, cropped screenshot or short clip.
- Look for the publication date and any update or correction. A true report from years ago can be misleading when presented as new.
- Find the original speaker, document, image or recording. Compare the post with the complete source rather than a repost that may have altered it.
- Check whether several independent, credible outlets or an official agency cover the same event. Repeated copies of one unverified post are not independent confirmation.
Inspect images and video
- Look for mismatched lighting, reflections, shadows, hands, text, lip movement and abrupt edits that can indicate manipulation.
- Search for earlier appearances of the image, if your service provides an image-search tool, and compare captions and dates.
- Do not treat a high view count, blue check, professional logo or confident narration as evidence of authenticity.
Use authoritative checks
For health, emergency, election, financial and legal claims, consult the relevant government agency, court, election authority, health service or regulator. A reputable fact-checking organization can help with widely circulated claims, but read its methodology and the evidence it cites. Australia’s communications regulator ACMA gives a simple safety rule: “If in doubt, don’t share it.”

Content can be edited or deleted after you report it. Before opening a report form, preserve only what you need for the review.

- Copy the direct URL to the post, video, profile, message or search-result page. A link to the account homepage is less useful than a link to the specific item.
- Take a screenshot showing the account name, date or time, claim and surrounding context. Include the address bar or another identifier when possible, but redact private messages, phone numbers and unrelated personal data before sharing the image.
- Record what you observed: the exact claim, where it appeared, why it appears false or misleading, and links to the authoritative source you checked. Do not download suspicious files to prove a point.
- Store the notes securely. If the item involves threats, extortion, child safety or imminent physical danger, contact emergency services or the appropriate specialist authority rather than relying on an ordinary content report.
Do not repost the claim to criticize it if that would expose more people to it. Quoting a false headline in a public post can spread it through screenshots, recommendations and search indexing even when your intention is corrective.
How to report a social-media post, video or message
Use this sequence for most social networks. The names of menus and categories vary by platform and market.
- Open the item itself. Go to the specific post, video, comment, profile, advertisement or message. Do not report a search preview when the content is hosted elsewhere; open the hosting service first.
- Open the options menu. Look for an ellipsis, three dots, share-and-more control, flag icon or “Options” label beside the item. On a phone, the control may be above the post, below it or behind a long press.
- Select Report. The label may read “Report post,” “Report video,” “Report account,” “Report message” or a similar phrase. If you only see a mute, block or hide command, open the additional menu or the service’s help control.
- Choose the closest rule category. Depending on the service, options can include misinformation, false information, manipulated media, impersonation, scam, fraud, harassment, dangerous activity or another policy violation. Choose the category that matches the conduct, not the most dramatic label. A category called “misinformation” may not be available in your country.
- Add concise context. If a text box appears, state the specific claim, the reliable source that contradicts it, the relevant date and any sign of editing or impersonation. Include the direct URL or screenshot only if the form permits it. Avoid insults, speculation and a long copy of the false claim.
- Submit and note the confirmation. Some services show a confirmation screen, case number or status page; others do not. Save a reference if one is provided, but do not assume that every service will send an email or disclose its decision.
Example: reporting on X
On X, open the post’s menu, select Report post and follow the prompts. X states that reporting a post does not automatically suspend the account and that users may or may not receive an outcome. If the problem is an impersonating account, scam or threat rather than the factual claim alone, select the category that describes that conduct.
Other social networks
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other services provide report controls on the item or account. TikTok says users can report potential harmful misinformation for assessment by its safety teams. The available labels and escalation paths can vary by market, account type and language, so confirm the current wording in the service’s official help center when a button is not where expected.

How to report a misleading Google Search result
- Run the search and locate the result. Confirm that the problem is with the result or snippet shown by Google, not only with a page that you dislike.
- Open the result’s menu. Select the three-dot or options control next to the result.
- Choose Feedback. Describe what is inaccurate, unsafe or misleading about the result, title, snippet or ranking. Explain the factual issue and include the page’s date or relevant context when known.
- Submit the form. Google says it may review submitted feedback and use it to improve Search, but it may not respond and the feedback path is not a promise that the page will be removed.
Use a specialized Google reporting route when the page is phishing, distributes malware, exposes personal information under an applicable policy, violates copyright or presents another clearly defined issue. Those routes are separate from ordinary Search feedback. If the page is merely inaccurate or controversial but does not violate a removal policy, Search feedback may be the only in-product option.

The deciding question is where the item appears. Report a social-network item inside that network; send feedback about a search result to the search engine; use a specialized form when the harm has its own reporting route.
Write an evidence-based explanation
A short, precise explanation is easier for a reviewer to assess than a general statement that something is “fake.” Use this structure when a text field is available:

- Claim: quote or paraphrase the exact factual statement and identify the item’s date.
- Problem: explain whether it is false, materially incomplete, manipulated, impersonating someone, or presented with the wrong date or location.
- Evidence: name the official record, original source or independent fact check that conflicts with it.
- Risk: explain a concrete harm, such as directing people to a credential-stealing page, misrepresenting an emergency or falsely attributing a statement.
For example: “This post says the storm warning was cancelled on 12 May. The national weather agency’s 12 May bulletin still lists the warning as active; the video is from 2022, not 2026.” That is more useful than “This is propaganda.” Do not claim certainty when the evidence is inconclusive; write “the date appears wrong” or “the image is presented without the original context” when that is what you can establish.

What happens after you submit
Possible outcomes
- The service removes the item or limits its visibility under a rule.
- The service adds a warning, context panel, age gate or reduced-recommendation treatment.
- The service takes action against an account, page or advertiser.
- The service decides the item does not violate its rules and leaves it available.
- The service sends no visible response, even if the report was logged.
Do not file dozens of duplicate reports, recruit others to mass-report an account, or submit a report under an unrelated category to force attention. Duplicate or abusive reporting can obscure the original evidence and may breach the service’s rules.
If the content remains online
Check whether the service provides a report-status or appeal function. If it does, use the original reference and add new evidence rather than repeating the same text. For a search result, a page remaining indexed does not prove that Google accepted its claims; indexing, ranking and publication are separate decisions. If the content creates a legal, financial or immediate safety risk, preserve the evidence and contact the relevant authority, platform safety team or emergency service.
Country and regulator limits
Rules outside the platform depend on your jurisdiction. In Australia, ACMA says individual complaints about misinformation should be directed to the platform and that it cannot act on those individual misinformation complaints. The Digital Industry Group Inc. (DIGI) accepts complaints about a signatory’s material breach of its voluntary code, but it does not resolve complaints about an individual content item or a platform’s moderation decision. These statements apply to Australia; they should not be generalized to another country.

Check that body’s current complaint rules before sending personal information, and use the platform’s own process for ordinary content moderation.
Common problems and fixes
You cannot find a “fake news” category
Choose the closest accurate category, such as false information, manipulated media, scam, impersonation or dangerous activity. If none fits, use the general “something else” or feedback option and describe the factual issue. Never select a category that misrepresents the conduct.
The post was deleted before you could report it
Use the saved screenshot, URL and account name if the service offers a general safety form. A deleted item may no longer be reviewable, so explain when and where you saw it and do not imply that the service can verify content it cannot access.
The form requires a login or will not load
Sign in through the service’s official application or website, update the app, try the equivalent desktop or mobile path, and check whether the item is private or region-restricted. Do not give your password or identity documents to a third-party “reporting” site claiming it can speed up moderation.
You are unsure whether the claim is false
Do not report it as a proven falsehood. Save the link, seek the original context and consult an authoritative source. You can report a separate, verifiable issue such as impersonation, phishing or a manipulated video even when the underlying claim remains uncertain.
The item is an urgent threat or scam
Prioritize safety: do not click the link, send money or confront the sender. Contact your bank for suspected payment fraud, emergency services for immediate danger, and the appropriate national cybercrime or consumer-protection channel for serious scams. Submit the platform report as an additional step, not the only response.
