Do these things before you submit a report
Content can disappear, change, or be reposted while a platform reviews it. Create a record before clicking Report.

Preserve the original evidence
- Copy the profile, channel, post, video, Snap, Story, or conversation URL.
- Record the account name, handle, display name, and the date and time you saw it, including your time zone.
- Take screenshots that show the surrounding context, not just a cropped face or frame.
- Download the media when the platform permits it, and retain the original file and metadata.
- Save direct messages, payment requests, phone numbers, email addresses, wallet addresses, or instructions connected with the deception.
- Write down the exact false statement or claim and who is falsely said to have made it.
Do not edit the only copy of a file. If you need to blur material before sharing it publicly, keep an untouched original in a secure location.
Decide what kind of violation you are reporting
- Fake account: someone creates a profile using your name, identity, photos, or brand and presents it as you.
- Synthetic or manipulated media: a video, image, or audio recording alters a real person or attributes words or actions to them falsely.
- Privacy or non-consensual likeness: your face, voice, personal information, or intimate imagery is used without consent. This can be the best route even when the uploader is not claiming to be your account.
- Fraud, harassment, threats, or illegal conduct: describe the concrete harm in addition to selecting the platform’s closest policy category.
Impersonation and deepfake content may require separate reports. A fake profile and a deepfake video posted by a different account are different objects, even if they are part of the same scheme.

A reliable reporting sequence on any platform
- Open the original object. Start from the profile, post, video, channel, Snap, Story, or conversation itself rather than reporting a search result or a repost.
- Use the native Report control. Pick the most precise category available: impersonation for a fake account; deepfake, synthetic media, manipulated media, or misinformation for altered content; and privacy or non-consensual-likeness for unauthorized use of your identity.
- Describe the deception in plain language. Identify the real person, say what was altered or falsely attributed, state whether you gave consent, and explain the harm. For example: “This video uses an AI-generated copy of my face and voice and falsely says I asked viewers to send money. I did not consent.”
- Attach only relevant evidence. Provide the URL, screenshots, original files, dates, and related messages when the form accepts them. Do not send passwords or unnecessary identity documents.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the receipt, email, ticket number, or in-app case reference and note the date submitted.
- Watch for the platform’s decision. If the report is rejected, use the stated appeal, privacy, or identity-verification route. Do not flood the system with duplicates or knowingly false reports.
Platforms do not publish a comparable response-time figure for these reports, so a receipt is evidence that you submitted a case, not a promise of a particular decision date.
How to report impersonation and deepfakes on each major platform
X
X allows a person or an authorized representative to file an impersonation report through its Help Center. A bystander can also report directly from the offending profile. You do not need an X account to report impersonation.
- For a fake account: open the profile and use the profile-level reporting option if you are a bystander, or use the Help Center impersonation form if you are the person represented or an authorized representative.
- For synthetic content: report the post or account under the closest misleading synthetic or manipulated-media category, and explain the false attribution and resulting harm.
- What may happen: a valid report can result in suspension or a requirement that the profile be changed. X’s authenticity policy also prohibits deceptive impersonation and misleading synthetic or manipulated media.
Include the profile URL even if the display name has changed. A screenshot of a name without the handle and URL is harder for a reviewer to verify.

YouTube prohibits unauthorized impersonation that may mislead viewers, including AI copies of a person’s voice or likeness. Report the channel or video through YouTube’s reporting tools.
- Channel or video report: open the offending channel or video, choose Report, and select the category that best describes impersonation or deceptive content. State who is being copied and what viewers are being led to believe.
- Privacy removal: if a video uses your personal information, face, or voice without consent, use YouTube’s privacy-guidelines removal request. This is separate from an ordinary community-policy report and is important when the main injury is unauthorized use of your likeness.
- Context matters: YouTube considers parody and satire when evaluating removal. Explain why the material is presented as a real person or real statement rather than assuming that every imitation is automatically prohibited.
If the same material appears in multiple videos, preserve each URL and identify the original upload. A channel report does not automatically document every individual reupload.

TikTok
TikTok separates account impersonation from reporting an AI-generated or manipulated post.
Report an impersonating account
- Open the profile.
- Choose
Share. - Select
Report, thenReport account. - Choose
Pretending to Be Someone. - Select
MeorCelebrity, as applicable, and complete the form.
TikTok’s online United States impersonation form may require valid identification. The non-United States form uses Report a potential violation, Account violation, and Impersonation. Provide only the document requested through TikTok’s official form and keep a copy of your submission.

- Open the video or post and choose
Report. - Select
Misinformation. - Choose
Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media. - Explain whose likeness is used, whether consent exists, and what false message or harm results.
TikTok says this category includes AI impersonation and non-consensual use of the likenesses of private adults or minors. Report the account separately when the profile itself pretends to be you.
Snapchat
Snapchat recommends its in-app reporting flow for abuse, illegal content, and other violations. Capture the exact item before submitting because a Snap, Story, or chat may expire or be deleted.
- For a Snap or Story, open the item and use the available Report control.
- For an account, open the profile and report the account rather than only one disappearing post.
- For a chat, preserve the conversation and report it from the chat’s safety or reporting options.
- For non-consensual intimate imagery, use Snapchat’s dedicated support route in addition to the in-app report. Some jurisdictions impose specific reporting obligations, so urgent cases may require local advice as well.
Record whether the material was a Snap, Story, account, or chat in your description. That tells the reviewer exactly where the evidence existed.

Meta’s reviewed Facebook guidance directs impersonation cases to the Facebook Help Center. Open the fake profile, preserve its URL and screenshots, then use the Help Center’s current impersonation reporting path.
For a manipulated photo, video, or audio post, report the post itself using the closest misinformation, manipulated-media, privacy, or harassment category. If the post also comes from a profile pretending to be you, submit the account impersonation report separately.
Instagram’s available menus can change, and a stable dedicated deepfake menu is not consistently provided. Use the current in-app Report action on the profile or post, then search the Instagram Help Center for the relevant impersonation, privacy, or manipulated-media route.
- Report the profile when the account claims to be you.
- Report each materially different deepfake post, Reel, or message.
- Use a privacy or non-consensual-likeness route when the issue is unauthorized use of your face, voice, or personal information rather than a complete fake account.
Describe the exact false attribution and link the account to the content in your notes. This is especially useful when a post is removed but the profile remains active.

Save screenshots of the message thread, the sender’s profile, and any payment request before reporting. If the same sender operates a Facebook profile or page, report that account as well.
Optional account protection on Facebook and Instagram
Meta Verified for creators on Facebook and Instagram is a paid subscription that Meta says includes impersonation protection and enhanced support. Availability, eligibility, and pricing can change. Treat it as an optional account-protection service, not as a replacement for reporting a specific fake account or deepfake.

What to write in the description box
A concise, fact-based explanation is more useful than an accusation without evidence. Include four elements:

- Identity: “I am the person shown” or “This account is pretending to be [the real person].”
- Manipulation: identify the AI-generated face, cloned voice, altered lip movement, fabricated caption, or false profile details.
- Consent: say clearly whether you authorized the use. If consent was limited to a particular project, explain that the current use exceeds it.
- Harm: state the specific result—fraud, payment requests, harassment, threats, privacy loss, reputational damage, or risk to a minor.
Example: “The account uses my name and photograph and tells contacts to send money. I did not create or authorize it. The profile URL is included in this report; screenshots and the payment request are available.”
If the platform rejects your report
A rejection does not necessarily mean the content is authentic or harmless. It may mean the wrong object or category was selected, the reviewer could not verify the connection to you, or the platform treated the material as commentary, parody, or satire.
- Read the reason. Save the decision notice and identify whether it concerns impersonation, privacy, manipulated media, or insufficient information.
- Appeal once with sharper evidence. Restate the exact URL, false claim, consent status, and concrete harm. Explain what the first report missed rather than copying the same text.
- Switch to the correct route. A rejected impersonation report may still justify a privacy-removal or non-consensual-likeness request, especially when your face, voice, or personal information is used.
- Complete identity verification only through the platform’s official process. Check the domain and form context before uploading identification, and redact information not requested.
- Report urgent risks through another channel. Preserve the original case number and reference it in any new privacy or safety submission. Do not create duplicate reports simply to increase volume.
When to escalate beyond a platform report
Platform moderation is not an emergency service or a substitute for legal advice. If the deepfake or impersonation involves money, account takeover, threats, stalking, extortion, intimate imagery, or a minor, preserve payment instructions and messages and consider contacting the relevant local authorities or a qualified lawyer. The appropriate authority depends on your jurisdiction and the type of harm; there is no single universal law-enforcement route.
If someone may be in immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services. Warn potential victims through a verified channel, but avoid reposting the harmful material or amplifying the fake account while doing so.
Common mistakes that weaken a report
- Reporting only a repost: reviewers may need the original profile or upload to see the full context.
- Choosing a generic spam category: impersonation, privacy, and manipulated-media categories identify the actual policy issue.
- Deleting evidence first: preserve URLs, files, and messages before blocking or reporting.
- Submitting a long theory instead of verifiable facts: identify what is false, who is represented, whether consent exists, and what harm occurred.
- Uploading unnecessary identity documents: provide documents only when the official form requests them.
- Sending duplicate or knowingly false reports: this can obscure the genuine case and may violate platform rules.
- Assuming a paid protection service replaces a report: account-protection features do not remove the need to report each fake profile or piece of manipulated media.
A compact checklist for your records
- Original profile, post, video, channel, Snap, Story, or conversation URL
- Handle, display name, and account identifier
- Date, time, and time zone observed
- Unedited screenshots and downloaded media
- Exact false claim or fabricated attribution
- Consent status and description of the real person
- Evidence of fraud, harassment, threats, payment requests, or privacy harm
- Platform, category selected, submission date, and confirmation number
- Appeal or privacy-request reference if the first report is rejected
Use the checklist once per distinct object. Keeping separate records prevents a disappearing post, a renamed account, or a rejected category from erasing the evidence needed for the next review.
