How to Report Bugs Found During Visual Regression Testing

A visual diff is a review signal, not proof of a bug. Verify intent, reproduce the state, and give your ticket clear expected-versus-actual details and comparison evidence.

A visual diff is a review signal, not proof of a bug. First check whether the change is intentional and reproducible; if it is not, file a ticket that identifies the affected page or component, states the expected and actual appearance, records the environment and reproduction steps, and links to the comparison evidence.

Confirm the visual difference is a bug

Open the test result and inspect the changed region in context. Record the page or component, snapshot or test label, build or commit, and the location of the change. Keep the direct build or diff link if your visual-testing system provides one.

Compare the result with the intended design, requirements, or pull request description. A planned redesign, updated copy, or deliberately changed component can produce a valid diff. If the change is intentional, follow your team’s review process to approve it or update the baseline. Do not update a baseline just to clear an unexplained difference; that can make a real regression harder to find.

If the change is unintended, check whether it appears again under the conditions that produced the comparison. A mismatch between the baseline environment and the current run can itself cause rendering differences, but it is a cause to investigate—not proof that the application is behaving correctly.

Record the environment and state

Include enough context for another person to recreate the captured state. Note the browser and version, operating system or device, viewport, build or commit, and any relevant test configuration. Also record the route or component, required data or setup, and the actions that lead to the state shown in the diff.

Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. When possible, reproduce the comparison in the same environment that generated the baseline. If that is not possible, record the difference rather than silently treating it as equivalent.

Write a clear expected-versus-actual description

Describe what a user can see and where. Avoid labels such as “looks wrong” without a specific observation. For example: “Expected the primary action to remain fully visible below the heading; actual: the alert banner overlaps its upper edge at the mobile viewport.” This is an illustrative example, not a report of a particular incident.

Explain impact in observable terms: what content is obscured, what is misaligned, or which task is harder to complete. Identify affected users or viewports if you know them. Do not claim a frequency or severity you have not established.

Attach evidence and route the ticket

Link the original build or diff whenever the platform provides one. If your issue tracker does not preserve that comparison, attach before-and-after screenshots or an annotated crop, while keeping the unaltered evidence available for review. A crop can point reviewers to the issue, but the complete comparison helps them assess surrounding layout changes.

Use your team’s issue tracker and triage conventions. Choose priority according to the known user impact and scope, and assign the relevant component or team when you can identify it. There is no universal severity scale that fits every team or visual defect.

Copy-ready visual regression bug template

Title: [Page/component] [visible defect] at [browser/device/viewport]

Environment: [app/build or commit; browser/version; OS/device; viewport; test configuration]
Location/state: [route or component; test/snapshot label; required setup or data]
Steps to reproduce:
1. [Starting point]
2. [Action]
3. [Action that reaches the captured state]

Expected: [What the interface should show or how it should behave]
Actual: [What the comparison shows, including where it differs]
Evidence: [Build/diff link; before/after screenshots or annotated crop if needed]
Impact: [What task or content is impaired; affected users/viewports, if known]
Reproducibility: [Whether it recurs and under which environment]

Capture evidence without confusing it with a visual test

Use the visual-testing system’s build or diff as the primary comparison artifact. A separate screenshot can make a ticket easier to understand, but by itself it may not include the baseline, changed-pixel view, or state needed to determine what changed.

Keep the capture tied to the relevant build and state; do not present a standalone screenshot as proof that a difference is a regression.

Common triage problems

The difference disappears on another machine

Compare the browser version, operating system, viewport, settings, and test mode with the baseline run. Re-run in the baseline environment if available, and include both environments in the ticket if the mismatch remains. Environment variation is a possible explanation to check, not a reason to dismiss the visual change without review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screenshot does not show enough to reproduce the issue

Add the route, snapshot label, build or commit, data/setup requirements, and actions needed to reach the state. Link the original diff and provide the full comparison when a crop omits surrounding content.

The diff looks intentional, but the ticket is still unclear

Check the design or change description and ask the change owner to confirm intent. If the change is intended, handle it through baseline review; if intent is unclear, keep the difference available for review rather than accepting the baseline as a shortcut.

Choosing where to review visual changes

Use the workflow that fits your existing test runner and CI. Playwright documents native screenshot comparisons, while Chromatic documents hosted snapshot review for Playwright workflows and Percy describes reviewing a build and diff. These examples do not establish a universal best tool or a comprehensive product comparison.

  • Check whether the workflow integrates with your current test runner and CI.
  • Determine whether baselines and diffs are stored locally or reviewed in a hosted interface.
  • Consider whether reviewers need only a static screenshot or additional page context.
  • Confirm the browsers and viewports your team needs to cover.
  • Account for the work of maintaining baselines and reviewing expected changes.

Whatever workflow you use, keep the comparison artifact connected to the ticket. The reporting method is the same: verify intent, preserve the relevant state and environment, describe the visible difference, and give the next person enough evidence to investigate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every changed screenshot become a bug ticket?

No. Review the diff against the intended design or change first. A deliberate UI update may need approval or a baseline update rather than a defect ticket.

Is an annotated crop enough evidence?

It can direct attention to the affected area, but retain the full comparison or its original build/diff link so reviewers can see the surrounding page.

Who should decide whether to update the baseline?

Follow the team’s visual review ownership and approval process; the available guidance does not establish one universal role for every team.
