In Google Messages, Block stops messages from an unwanted sender, while Report spam blocks the sender and sends Google information to improve spam detection. Either action places the conversation in Spam & blocked. You can later open that folder and choose Unblock; Google says this removes the spam report and returns the conversation to your Home screen.
Choose the right action first
Google Messages gives you two related controls, but they are not identical. Use Block when you simply do not want further messages from a number. Use Report spam when the message is unwanted or deceptive and you are willing to send limited message information to Google for spam-detection improvement.

Block an unknown sender on an Android phone
Block from the conversation list
This is the quickest method when the sender’s thread is visible on the Google Messages Home screen.

- Open Google Messages.
- On the Home screen, touch and hold the conversation from the unknown sender.
- Tap Block.
- Confirm the action.
The conversation is moved to Spam & blocked. Blocking alone does not submit a report to Google.
Block and report from the confirmation flow
After you select Block, Google Messages can offer Report spam in the confirmation flow. Select it if you want to report the conversation, then tap OK. Reporting blocks the sender as part of the same action and moves the thread to Spam & blocked.
If you only want the block, leave the reporting option unselected and complete the confirmation.

- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Details.
- Tap Block & report spam.
- Tap OK to confirm.
This path combines blocking and reporting. If you intend to block without reporting, use the Home-screen Block flow and do not select the report option.
Find the Spam & blocked folder
Spam & blocked is where Google Messages keeps conversations that you blocked or reported. It is also the place to review a thread you may have handled accidentally and to restore a sender.
- Tap your profile photo or profile icon in Google Messages.
- Tap More options.
- Choose Spam & blocked.
Menu wording and the position of the profile control can vary with the Google Messages release, Android version, device manufacturer, language, and country. If you do not see the exact label, look for the account menu or a similarly named spam-and-blocked section rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

Unblocking reverses the Google Messages block. For a conversation that was reported as spam, Google says the spam report is also removed, and the conversation moves back to the Home screen.

- Open Google Messages and tap your profile photo or icon.
- Tap More options.
- Choose Spam & blocked.
- Select the contact or conversation you want to restore.
- Tap Unblock.
After the action completes, the thread should no longer be in Spam & blocked; it returns to the normal Home list. Unblocking does not turn old messages into new notifications, and it does not undo messages that were already filtered while the sender was blocked.
Use Google Messages for web
The web interface has equivalent controls, although the menus are located beside the conversation rather than inside the Android profile menu.
Block and report on the web
- Open the Google Messages conversation list in your browser.
- Find the conversation from the unwanted sender.
- Open More options next to that person.
- Choose Block & report spam.
- Confirm the action.
The conversation is handled as a blocked-and-reported thread and is placed in Spam & blocked.
Unblock on the web
- Open More options in the conversation list.
- Choose Spam & blocked.
- Select the contact.
- Choose Unblock.
- Click or tap Done.
If a label is not in the same position shown here, check the overflow menu attached to the conversation or the main Messages menu. Google can change web labels independently of the Android app.

What a spam report sends to Google
Reporting is more than a local filing action. Google says a spam report sends the spammer’s phone number and the last 10 incoming messages to Google to help improve spam detection. The information is associated with the reported conversation, not with every message you have ever exchanged with that person.
- Each reported message can include the sender’s phone number and its timestamp.
- For RCS messages, the report can include an RCS Message ID.
- For an RCS group report, it can include an RCS Group ID and group metadata.
- Past replies are not sent as part of the report.
- Google says the reporter’s name and phone number are not linked to the spammer’s messages.
Because reporting shares this information, choose Block without reporting if you want the local blocking result but do not want to submit a spam report. You can also report later if you change your mind, provided the conversation remains available in Google Messages.

Google Messages uses on-device machine-learning models to classify suspected scams. Depending on the result, the app can automatically move a suspected scam to spam or warn you before you interact with it. This protection is separate from manually blocking a sender: automatic classification can occur before you make a decision, while the manual controls let you block or report a specific conversation.
Google has also tested controls for unknown international senders in selected markets. That does not mean the same setting appears on every phone. Availability and menu labels can differ by Android version, Google Messages release, device, language, and country, so an option described in another person’s instructions may not be present on your device.
What blocking does—and does not do
- It applies the Google Messages control to that sender. The thread is moved out of the normal Home list and into Spam & blocked.
- It is not the same as reporting. A block without a report does not send the spam-report package described above.
- It can be reversed. Use Unblock from Spam & blocked to restore the conversation.
- It does not identify whether a message is genuinely fraudulent. Blocking is your decision; automatic spam warnings and classification are separate protections.
If the sender is using several numbers, blocking one conversation does not establish that every future number from the same person or organization will be blocked. Handle each new thread that appears in Google Messages.
Troubleshoot common problems
The Block option is missing
Open the conversation and check More options > Details. Google documents Block & report spam in that details view. If the labels still differ, update your understanding of the path for your app release: menu names can vary by Android version, device, language, and country.
You reported the wrong conversation
Open your profile menu, go to More options > Spam & blocked, select the conversation, and tap Unblock. Google says this removes the spam report and puts the thread back on the Home screen. If you still do not want messages from that sender, you will need to decide whether to block it again without reporting.

Reporting intentionally moves the thread from Home to Spam & blocked. It has not necessarily been deleted. Use the profile menu to open that folder and select the conversation.
You are using the web version
On the web, use the overflow menu next to the person in the conversation list. Choose Block & report spam to block and report, or open More options > Spam & blocked to find a blocked contact and choose Unblock, followed by Done.
You are unsure whether to report
Reporting is optional. If your priority is simply to stop the sender and avoid sending the report data, use Block without selecting Report spam. If the message appears to be spam or a scam and you want Google to use it for spam-detection improvement, choose the report option and accept the information-sharing described above.
