If an emergency is still happening, call 911 and say immediately that you are correcting an earlier report. If an accidental 911 call is still connected, stay on the line and explain the mistake. If the call has ended, contact the responsible 911 center or law-enforcement agency through its official non-emergency channel, identify the earlier call or tip, and provide the accurate facts. A genuine mistake is not automatically a crime, while knowingly false reporting can create legal risk that varies by jurisdiction.
Choose the right response first
The next step depends on four facts: whether anyone is in immediate danger, whether the call is still connected, what kind of submission you made, and whether the information was accidentally wrong or knowingly fabricated.

Local agencies do not all use the same forms, amendment process, deadlines, or release rules. The instructions below explain the safest general approach without assuming that one jurisdiction’s procedure applies nationwide.
If you accidentally called 911
Keep the call connected
Do not hang up after an accidental call. Tell the call-taker plainly that you dialed 911 by mistake, that a child made the call, or that no emergency exists. Answer the call-taker’s questions and follow the instructions you receive.

The National 911 Program, part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, warns: “If you dial 911 by mistake, or if a child in your home dials 911 when no emergency exists, do not hang up – that could make 911 officials think that an emergency exists, and possibly send responders to your location.” Its general instruction is not to disconnect until the call-taker tells you to do so.
Correct wrong information before ending the call
If you gave the wrong address, described the wrong person, overstated a threat, or otherwise supplied inaccurate information, say that you are correcting something from the call. State the incorrect detail and the accurate detail separately. Confirm the exact location, whether anyone is injured, whether a weapon or other immediate hazard is present, and whether anyone remains in danger.
Use ordinary language rather than trying to characterize the event legally. The call-taker decides what information responders need and whether a response should continue. There is no universal promise that dispatched units can be recalled, so remain available and follow the instructions you are given.
If the 911 call has already ended
Use the non-emergency route
When no immediate danger exists, find the official non-emergency number for the 911 center or law-enforcement agency that handled the call. Do not redial 911 simply to discuss a completed call, request a recording, or ask about paperwork.
When you reach the center or agency, provide:
- Your name and a callback number when appropriate.
- The location associated with the call.
- The approximate date and time.
- The incident, call, or event number, if you were given one.
- A precise description of the statement that was wrong.
- The accurate information, including any continuing safety risk.
Ask whether an incident record was created and how that agency records a correction, supplemental statement, or updated information. Some agencies may take the correction by phone; others may require a written statement, an online submission, or an in-person process.

When the situation becomes urgent again
If facts change while you are waiting, or anyone may be in immediate danger, call 911. Start with a clear statement such as, “I am correcting an earlier report at this location.” Give the current emergency information first, then explain what was inaccurate in the earlier call.
How to correct a police report
For a police tip or report, contact the law-enforcement agency responsible for the place where the incident occurred. A different agency may have answered the phone, but the agency with jurisdiction generally determines how its report is supplemented or corrected.

Tell the employee that you need to correct information in an earlier report. Have the report number ready if you have one. Explain the facts in chronological order:
- Identify when and where you made the original report.
- State which specific detail was inaccurate or incomplete.
- Give the corrected fact without guessing about anything you do not know.
- Explain how you learned that the earlier detail was wrong.
- Ask whether the agency needs a written statement, signature, identity verification, or an appointment.
Do not alter a document yourself or submit multiple conflicting versions in an attempt to make the record look cleaner. Ask the agency to attach your correction or supplemental account to the original record according to its procedure.
If you do not know the report number
Give the agency the location, approximate time, names involved, your contact information, and any details that can help locate the record. Ask whether it can find the earlier submission and what reference number you should use for follow-up. Keep the name or identification number of the employee who handled your request when the agency provides one.

How to update an anonymous tip
USAGov notes that local agencies commonly accept anonymous tips or reports online or by phone, sometimes through a separate non-emergency channel. Follow the instructions for the particular tip system rather than assuming that an anonymous submission can be edited after sending.

If the system gave you a confirmation number, code, or other reference, use it when submitting additional information. State that the new message supplements an earlier tip and identify the exact fact that needs correction. Keep the confirmation page, code, or timestamp for your records.
When no follow-up feature exists
Contact the responsible agency through its official phone number or other listed channel and explain that you need to add information to an earlier anonymous tip. An agency may be unable to associate a later contact with the original submission if the system does not retain a reference or follow-up function. Do not reveal personal information you do not want to disclose merely because another channel is more convenient; ask what anonymous options remain available.
Requesting a copy of a 911 call
The National 911 Program says 911 centers retain recordings for periods that vary by state. Contact the relevant center through its non-emergency number and ask how to request a copy. The center may require the date, approximate time, caller or location information, an incident number, identification, a formal public-records request, or a fee. Release can depend on the center’s policy, the age of the recording, privacy rules, and other circumstances.

- Whether the recording still exists.
- Which office accepts the request.
- What identifying information or form is required.
- Whether a fee applies.
- Whether the center can provide a transcript, audio file, or another format.
- Whether any portion may be withheld under local law.
Do not call 911 to ask for a recording or for the center’s non-emergency number. Use the agency’s published non-emergency contact instead.

An inaccurate statement is not automatically intentional fraud
People can give wrong information because they are frightened, confused, misheard someone, misunderstood a question, or remembered an event incorrectly. Use precise language when contacting the agency: say that the information was inaccurate and identify the correction. Do not describe yourself or another person as having committed a crime unless the facts and local law support that conclusion.
Knowingly false reporting is different
The National 911 Program defines swatting as falsely reporting an emergency to public safety with the intent of causing a police or SWAT response at a location where no emergency exists. These calls initially cannot be distinguished from genuine emergencies and are handled through normal call-taking procedures.
Knowingly filing a false police report can be a crime, but the offense, required intent, and possible consequences depend on the jurisdiction and facts. Arlington County Police, for example, warns users of its local online reporting system that filing a false police report is a crime. That warning is a local example, not a nationwide rule.
When to obtain legal advice
If you deliberately made a false report, are concerned that your statement could expose you to criminal charges, or are being questioned about another person’s alleged false report, speak with a lawyer licensed in the relevant jurisdiction before giving a detailed investigative statement. Do not assume that correcting a report guarantees immunity, prevents charges, or eliminates all consequences. A lawyer can explain local law and whether you should provide additional information.

What to say when you make the correction
A short, factual explanation helps the agency locate the record and separate the correction from the original account. Adapt this wording to your circumstances:
“I am calling about a 911 call/report made at
[location]around[approximate time]. I need to correct information I gave earlier. I said[briefly identify the inaccurate detail]. The accurate information is[state the correction]. The current safety situation is[state whether anyone is in danger]. Please tell me how to add this correction to the incident record.”
For an anonymous tip, replace personal identifying information with the confirmation code or other reference, if available. If you do not know a fact, say that you do not know it rather than filling the gap with a guess.

After contacting the agency, keep a private record of:
- The date and time of your correction.
- The number or channel you used.
- The name, badge number, or employee identification supplied by the agency.
- Any incident, report, or confirmation number.
- Documents, screenshots, or messages you submitted.
- Instructions and deadlines the agency gave you.
Save the original facts and the correction separately, without editing timestamps or deleting messages. This creates a clear chronology if the agency asks follow-up questions or if you later request the record.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Hanging up on an accidental 911 call: The center may treat the disconnect as a possible emergency and send responders.
- Using 911 for a records request: Recording and report-copy requests belong with the center or agency’s non-emergency or records office.
- Calling a convenient agency instead of the responsible one: Start with the agency that handled the call or has jurisdiction over the incident location.
- Giving a second vague explanation: Identify the exact wrong detail and replace it with the accurate fact.
- Assuming every anonymous system supports edits: Use the original reference when possible and ask the agency how follow-up is linked.
- Calling a mistake “swatting” without evidence of intent: Swatting is an intentional false emergency report, not simply any inaccurate call.
- Assuming one state’s rules apply everywhere: Retention, release, amendment procedures, and legal consequences are local or state-dependent.
- Waiting while a danger continues: If someone may be in immediate danger, call 911 and put the current emergency first.
When the jurisdiction is unclear
If you do not know which agency handled the call, use the official emergency-services or police contact information for the location where the incident occurred. Explain that you are trying to correct an earlier 911 call, report, or tip and ask to be routed to the responsible center or records unit. Once you identify the agency, use its instructions rather than contacting multiple departments with inconsistent accounts.
For a federal, tribal, military, campus, or other special jurisdiction, the responsible authority may not be the city or county police department. Say where the event occurred and ask which agency owns the record.
