If someone is pretending to be you or someone you know online, save the account’s profile URL, handle, relevant post or message links, and a few contextual screenshots before they change—unless doing so would delay an urgent safety report. Then report the account through the platform’s official impersonation process. Use local emergency or law-enforcement channels for immediate danger, threats, stalking, or fraud; a platform report is not a substitute for those routes.
How do I report an impersonation account?
Use the service’s official report path and describe only what you can verify: who is being impersonated, which account or content is involved, and what the account did that could mislead people. Do not guess who operates it or claim a crime occurred unless you have evidence.

- Check the identity claim safely. If you are unsure whether the account is genuine, verify through a contact route you already trust. Do not reply to the suspicious profile or click its links. Some policies distinguish clearly recognizable parody from impersonation; a U.S. Department of State policy excerpt does so for its own staff rules, not as a universal standard: State Department policy.
- Save key identifiers and content. Copy the profile URL and links to relevant posts or messages; record the handle, displayed name, and visible dates. Capture limited screenshots when content may disappear, is private, or lacks a usable URL. Do not delay an urgent report to assemble a perfect record.
- Choose the official impersonation category. Select the closest option such as “impersonation” or “pretending to be someone.” X’s Help Center says the targeted person or an authorized representative can report through its Help Center; a bystander can report from the profile, and an X account is not required: X impersonation reporting. Forms and evidence requirements vary by service. Some X forms may request identification or proof of authority depending on who submits the report, so check the live form and consider the privacy implications before providing documents.
- Explain the observable behavior. Identify the person or organization being impersonated, the exact handle or posts, and the specific conduct—for example, a false claim of affiliation or a request for money. Include links and dates where possible.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the platform’s confirmation or case number and add the report date to your incident timeline. Send later information through the official route.
- Escalate serious harm. For threats, stalking, fraud, financial loss, or immediate danger, contact the appropriate local police, regulator, or emergency service. You can report to the platform and seek official help at the same time; do not wait for a platform decision if someone is at risk.
What evidence should I save before reporting a fake account?
Make a concise, factual record that helps someone identify the account and understand what happened. South Wales Police describes an impersonation account as “a profile that falsely represents a person, entity, or organisation”; that is its guidance’s wording, not a universal legal definition. Its advice is to capture relevant profile, post, message, and interaction evidence, then use the platform’s own reporting tools: South Wales Police online safety guidance.
- Account identifiers: Profile URL, handle, displayed name, profile-image description, and any public account identifier shown.
- Relevant material: Direct URLs for posts, comments, messages, or other interactions. If there is no direct link, note where it appears in the app.
- Context: Screenshots or screen recordings that show enough of the profile and surrounding interaction to identify the account and behavior. Include visible dates and times when available.
- Timeline: When you found the account, what it did, whom it contacted, when you reported it, and later changes such as a changed handle or a replacement account.
- Impact and requests: Affected people or accounts, and any direct requests for contact, payment, or personal information.
- Report records: Confirmation messages, case numbers, and any follow-up sent to the platform or local authorities.
For reports to Singapore’s Online Safety Commission, guidance says to describe who was involved, what happened, how the material was shared, which platforms were involved, and the dates and times. It advises saving the URL where possible; screenshots, photos, or recordings can help if no URL is available. For content restricted to friends or a group, include screenshots as well as the link because a reviewer may not be able to access it: Singapore Online Safety Commission guidance. Those are Singapore-specific instructions, not a universal reporting form.

How can I preserve evidence safely?
Keep a small, private copy rather than reposting the material publicly. Store it somewhere you control and limit access to people helping with the report. Avoid collecting personal information that is not needed. If an authentic capture matters, retain the original; if you make a cropped or annotated copy for clarity, keep that separate from the original.
Be especially careful with sexual images or videos that may depict someone under 18. UK Police.uk guidance for sextortion reports says a victim does not have to collect screenshots before contacting police, and warns not to screenshot, record, or share sexual material if there is uncertainty that everyone depicted is 18 or older. Platform report or law enforcement report: which route should I use?
These routes have different purposes and can be used together. A content report asks a platform to review conduct under its rules. Local authorities or regulators may investigate or take official action under processes that depend on location and the type of harm.

Does a platform report preserve account records?
No ordinary impersonation report should be treated as a request to preserve nonpublic account records for law enforcement. X says it may retain a temporary snapshot of relevant account records for 90 days when it receives an appropriate law-enforcement preservation request pending valid legal process. Meta describes a 90-day preservation step for records connected to official criminal investigations, pending formal legal process, and says it does not retain data for law-enforcement purposes unless a valid preservation request arrives before content is deleted. These are platform procedures for authorities, not user-facing retention guarantees or report-review deadlines: X law-enforcement information requests and Meta law-enforcement data preservation information.

If an investigation may be needed, contact local law enforcement promptly and give them exact account identifiers and URLs. The sources do not establish a universal user right to compel a platform to preserve data or a retention obligation that applies across services.

What should I do after filing?
- Keep the report confirmation and update your timeline if the account changes or contacts new people.
- Warn likely targets through a trusted channel, not by amplifying the fake account publicly.
- Watch for a replacement account or changed handle and report it through the official route.
- Review the security settings of any account that may have been compromised, and use a trusted contact method to clarify suspicious messages.
