If you see a lizard that may be threatened, keep well away, keep children and pets back, and take photographs only from a safe distance. Record the date, time, exact location, habitat and the animal’s condition, then report the observation to the environment or threatened-species agency in the Australian state or territory where you saw it.
If the lizard is sick, injured, trapped or otherwise in immediate danger, treat it as a wildlife-welfare matter rather than an ordinary sighting. WIRES lists a 24/7 Rescue Line on 1300 094 737 and a Report a Rescue form. Do not touch, chase, move or contain a monitor lizard.

Choose the right response first
“Endangered lizard” is a useful description for a concerned observer, but you do not need to prove the species or its legal status before reporting it. Australia’s threatened-species decisions are made through scientific assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). An unusual observation is worth passing on even when you are unsure what you saw.
| What you observed | Immediate action | Where to direct the report |
|---|---|---|
| Live animal behaving normally | Stay back, photograph from a distance and record the sighting details. | The environment or threatened-species agency for the state or territory where the sighting occurred. |
| Sick, injured or trapped animal | Keep people and pets away; do not handle or contain it. | A licensed wildlife rehabilitator, a veterinarian, or WIRES on 1300 094 737. |
| Dead animal | Do not handle it. Photograph it only if this can be done safely and note the exact location. | The relevant state or territory environment agency, which can decide how the record should be handled. |
| Species or status uncertain | Report what you observed and describe the uncertainty honestly. | The relevant environment or threatened-species agency; identification and legal status can be assessed by specialists. |
There is no single Australia-wide public lizard-sighting form identified for this purpose. The correct government contact depends on the jurisdiction where the animal was seen, not where you live.

Step-by-step: reporting a routine sighting
1. Observe without approaching
Monitor lizards, commonly called goannas, can defend themselves if cornered. WIRES’ guidance is explicit: “If you see any species of Monitor Lizard, please keep your distance, do not try to touch it or contain it.” Move people and pets away, leave the animal an escape route and never pursue it for a closer photograph.
DCCEEW gives the same basic instruction: “Avoid contact and keep your distance.” A long-lens photograph or short video taken from where you already are is more useful than a close image obtained by disturbing the animal.
2. Capture evidence from a safe distance
Make notes while the details are fresh. The minimum information requested in federal guidance is the date, time, location and photographs. Add the practical observations below when you can do so without approaching the lizard:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Exact location: street address, reserve name, road, coordinates or a map pin.
- Habitat: for example, woodland, wetland edge, rocky ground, beach dune or suburban garden.
- Nearby landmarks that help an officer find the site.
- What the animal was doing and which direction it moved.
- Number of animals seen.
- Condition: alive and apparently well, injured, sick, trapped or dead.
- Your name and contact details if the reporting form requests them.
Keep the original image files if possible. Do not edit a photograph in a way that removes location or time information, and do not geotag yourself in a hazardous place merely to improve a report.

3. Identify the sighting jurisdiction
Use the state or territory where the sighting happened. National conservation law provides the Commonwealth context, but routine public reporting is generally handled by the jurisdiction’s environment, wildlife or threatened-species agency. Agency names, phone numbers and online forms can change, so check the current official contact page before submitting a report.
4. Submit the observation through the agency’s current channel
Follow the department’s instructions for wildlife or threatened-species observations. Include the location and photographs first, then add habitat, behaviour and condition. If the agency offers a choice between an online form, telephone line or email, use the channel intended for wildlife sightings rather than a general emergency number.
5. Save the confirmation
Keep the case number, email confirmation or a copy of the submitted form. If an officer later asks for a clearer image or more precise coordinates, you can respond without creating a duplicate report.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. Report uncertainty plainly
Write “species uncertain” or describe the features you noticed instead of guessing. A specialist can assess an image, and a report can still be valuable even if the animal turns out not to be a listed species. Do not state that a sighting proves an EPBC listing; listing is determined through the formal assessment process.

NSW: the specific reporting route identified here
In New South Wales, disturbance caused by or to wildlife or bushland can be reported to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on 1300 361 967 or by email. The NSW Environment Line can receive a sighting and enter it into the BioNet Wildlife Atlas.
Give the NSW operator the same evidence used for an online report: date and time, exact location, photographs, habitat, behaviour, number of animals and condition. The NSW contact is not a nationwide number; use it for a sighting in NSW and use the relevant agency in another state or territory.
Other states and territories: finding the right office
The material available for this guide does not provide a complete, verified phone-and-form directory for every Australian jurisdiction. For a sighting outside NSW, search the current official website of the state or territory’s environment, parks, wildlife or threatened-species department and look for a wildlife sighting, threatened-species report or environment-line service.
When a department’s website separates ordinary observations from injured wildlife, choose the ordinary wildlife or threatened-species pathway for a healthy animal. If the animal is in distress, use the emergency or rehabilitation pathway instead. If you cannot identify the correct office, a state or territory environment department’s main contact centre can redirect the report.

What to do when a lizard is injured or in danger
Use a welfare response, not just a sightings form
A sick, bleeding, trapped or immobile lizard needs a response that can arrange care. NSW guidance recommends contacting a veterinarian or licensed wildlife rehabilitation provider and supplying the animal’s location and condition. WIRES directs callers with a sick or injured lizard or turtle to its 24/7 Rescue Line, 1300 094 737, or its Report a Rescue form.
Keep the scene safe
- Do not pick up, restrain, feed or give water to the lizard.
- Do not put it in a box, bag, vehicle or swimming pool.
- Keep dogs, cats, children and bystanders away.
- Tell the responder whether the animal is on a road, near traffic, in a building, caught in fencing or exposed to another immediate hazard.
- Remain nearby only if doing so is safe and does not make the animal more stressed.
For a dangerous location, describe the hazard clearly when you call. A responder may give instructions that differ according to the species, injury and surroundings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reporting a dead lizard
A dead animal can still provide useful distribution or disease information. Do not touch or move the carcass. Record the exact location, date and time, take a photograph from a safe position and report it to the relevant state or territory environment agency. Mention nearby roads, fencing, construction, poison or other apparent hazards without presenting an unverified cause of death as fact.

The EPBC Act is the Australian Government’s principal environment law. DCCEEW lists threatened categories including:
Best Value
- Extinct
- Extinct in the wild
- Critically endangered
- Endangered
- Vulnerable
- Conservation dependent
Listed species can receive conservation advice, recovery plans and assessment protections. A sighting report does not itself create a listing or prove that development has harmed a species; it supplies an observation that agencies and scientists may use alongside other evidence.
DCCEEW describes Australia as having between 600,000 and 700,000 species, with about 84% of plants, 83% of mammals and 45% of birds found nowhere else in the world. It also identifies more than 1,700 threatened species and ecological communities. Those figures explain why a precise, location-based record can matter, even when one observer cannot identify the animal.
How to write a report an officer can use
Start with a factual subject line
Use a short description such as “Possible threatened lizard sighting — [reserve or suburb] — [date]”. If the animal is injured, put “injured wildlife” first so the message is triaged appropriately.
Put location before speculation
Provide a map pin, coordinates or a clear address, followed by landmarks and access information. Then describe what you saw: size only if you can estimate it confidently, colour or markings, behaviour, number of animals and condition. Avoid turning a guess about species or cause of injury into a definite claim.
Attach original evidence
Attach the clearest photographs or video taken without disturbing the animal. If several files show the same lizard, identify the sequence and say whether the animal moved between images. Include your contact details only as requested by the agency’s form and be available for a follow-up identification question.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Approaching for a close-up: distance and safety matter more than image quality. Use optical zoom instead.
- Moving the animal: handling can cause injury, stress or a defensive bite and can destroy useful location evidence.
- Using the wrong jurisdiction: send the report to the agency covering the place where the lizard was observed.
- Treating every report as an emergency: reserve rescue channels for illness, injury, entrapment or immediate danger; use the ordinary sightings pathway for a healthy animal.
- Leaving out the exact location: a suburb alone may be too broad for an agency to verify habitat or follow up.
- Guessing the legal status: report the observation and let specialists determine identification and threatened status.
- Sending an old or copied image: say when and where the photograph was taken and keep the original file.
- Assuming a phone number is permanent: confirm current contact details on the responsible agency’s official website before calling or emailing.
A compact checklist before you submit
- Did you keep a safe distance and avoid touching, chasing or containing the lizard?
- Are children, pets and other bystanders clear of the animal?
- Do you have the date and time?
- Do you have an exact location, map pin, coordinates or identifiable landmark?
- Did you take photographs or video without disturbing it?
- Did you describe habitat, behaviour, number of animals and condition?
- Did you choose the agency for the state or territory where the sighting occurred?
- If the animal is sick or injured, did you use a veterinarian, licensed rehabilitator or WIRES rescue pathway instead of relying only on a routine sighting form?
- Did you state uncertainty rather than claiming an unverified species or cause?
