Save the evidence first, then report the specific video and—when an account is pretending to be the real person—the account as well. Use the platform’s impersonation, privacy, synthetic-media, or fraud category that most closely matches what the video is doing. If the clip involves threats, extortion, financial fraud, or election-related harm, preserve the same evidence for law enforcement or an election authority instead of relying on a platform report alone.
This guide gives the current reporting paths for YouTube and TikTok, explains what Instagram’s report flow is intended to cover, and shows how to prepare a complaint that a moderation team can act on.

Do this before you press Report
Reporting systems can remove a post, hide it from search, or make it unavailable to you while a review is pending. Capture the material while it is still visible, and keep an untouched copy of your records.

Build an evidence packet
- Exact public URL: Copy the video or post URL, the profile URL, and any shortened link that redirects to it.
- Account details: Record the display name, handle, profile name, profile photograph, and any linked website. Impersonators often change a handle after complaints begin.
- Timing: Note the upload date shown by the service and the date and time you captured the evidence, including your time zone.
- Visual proof: Take screenshots showing the account identity, caption, on-screen labels, comments, and any statement that the speaker is genuine.
- Audio and context: Make a screen recording that plays enough of the clip to establish what is being said, who appears to be speaking, and whether the post discloses synthetic or altered media.
- Transcript: Write down the relevant words, especially claims of endorsement, instructions to send money, threats, or statements presented as a real person’s speech.
- Identity and consent evidence: If you are the person being copied, include an official profile link or other reliable material establishing your identity. State clearly whether you gave permission; if you did not, say so. A legal representative should explain the authority to act for the person.
Keep the original screenshots and recording unchanged. Make working copies for redaction or submission, and maintain a simple log of when each item was captured. Do not delete the only copy after you report the post.

Describe the harm in one precise paragraph
A useful complaint identifies the real person, explains why viewers could mistake the synthetic voice for that person, states that the use was unauthorized when that is true, and identifies the concrete harm. For example: “This video uses an AI-generated version of my voice and presents the words as a real statement by me. I did not authorize it. The caption directs viewers to send money.” Avoid broad conclusions such as “this is fake” without explaining the impersonation and the misleading context.
How YouTube handles an AI voice impersonation
YouTube’s Impersonation Policy says it does not allow unauthorized impersonation of a person, entity, or channel when the conduct may mislead viewers in a way that could harm the YouTube community. Its example specifically covers “Misrepresenting an individual by using an AI version of their voice and false metadata to pass off a fake speech as real.” That makes an AI voice presented as an authentic statement a potential impersonation violation, not merely a disagreement about editing.
Report the video or channel for impersonation
Use YouTube’s report controls on the video when the principal problem is that the uploader is passing off the synthetic speaker as the real person. If the profile itself adopts the person’s name, photograph, branding, or identity, report the channel as well. Include the exact URL and explain which details could make a reasonable viewer believe the account or speech is genuine.

Keep the report focused on the specific conduct. A video can be offensive without being impersonation; the strongest submission identifies the false identity claim, the absence of authorization, and the way the presentation could mislead viewers.
Use YouTube’s privacy-removal process when the person is identifiable
YouTube also provides a Privacy Complaint Process for altered or synthetic content. Its Privacy Guidelines state: “If someone has used AI to alter or create content that looks or sounds like you, you can ask for it to be removed.” Use this route when the realistic voice or likeness identifies a real person and was used without consent, even if the uploader has not copied the person’s channel.
YouTube’s review is not an automatic removal. The platform says it considers whether the material is altered or synthetic, whether that alteration is disclosed, whether the person is uniquely identifiable, how realistic the result is, whether the person consented, and whether the context is parody, satire, public interest, or involves a public figure. Explain those facts rather than assuming that the words “AI” or “deepfake” decide the case.

What to include in a YouTube privacy complaint
- Identify the video and provide its exact URL.
- Identify the person whose voice or likeness appears and explain how viewers can recognize that person.
- Describe the altered audio or video and quote the words that are being presented as authentic.
- State whether the uploader disclosed synthetic media and whether you gave permission.
- Explain any foreseeable harm, such as a false endorsement, financial solicitation, reputational damage, or targeted harassment.
- Attach only the identity material needed to establish the complaint, and retain the complete evidence packet privately.
Parody, satire, public-interest reporting, and public-figure context can affect the outcome. That does not mean a complaint is inappropriate; it means the explanation should address why the presentation is still misleading, unauthorized, or harmful, if those facts apply.

TikTok defines AI-generated content to include “Video featuring a real person speaking, whose image, voice, and/or words are altered or modified by AI.” The service documents a dedicated misinformation path for deepfakes and manipulated media in both its app and web browser.
Post-level reporting path
- Open the video.
- Tap or click Report.
- Select Misinformation.
- Choose Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media.
- Select Submit and provide the requested explanation.
In the explanation, identify the real person, describe the AI voice alteration, state whether the post claims to be an authentic recording, and attach or reference the URL and evidence you saved. If the video is also soliciting money, making a threat, or directing viewers to a fraudulent site, say that explicitly instead of treating the matter as only a labeling dispute.
Report an impersonating account separately
A video report addresses the post. It does not necessarily address an account that is pretending to be the person across multiple posts. Submit a separate account-impersonation report when the profile adopts the person’s identity or represents itself as that person.
TikTok’s published route asks reporters in the United States to choose the impersonation form and upload valid identification. Outside the United States, choose Account violation and Impersonation, then complete the form. Prepare a clear identity explanation before opening the form; inconsistent names or unreadable documents can delay review. Only provide identification through TikTok’s own submission flow, not in public comments or direct messages to the uploader.
Privacy of the reporter and status checks
TikTok states: “TikTok will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you’re reporting.” That protects the reporter’s identity from the reported user, but it does not make a complaint anonymous to TikTok; the service may still use submitted information to evaluate it.
TikTok says report status may appear in the inbox or at Settings and Privacy → Support → Safety Center → Report Records. Save the confirmation or case reference if one is shown. A pending or rejected report is not a reason to delete your evidence; keep the original URL, screenshots, and recording in case the post is re-uploaded.
How to report an AI voice video on Instagram
Instagram’s exact menu wording can vary by app version, device, language, and account state. Start from the reel, post, or profile and use the in-app Report control. Choose the closest available reason for the conduct, such as impersonation, privacy, bullying or harassment, manipulated media, or fraud.
Choose the report object deliberately
- Report the reel or post when one item contains the synthetic voice or misleading claim.
- Report the account when the profile presents itself as the real person, uses the person’s identity, or repeats the behavior across posts.
- Use a privacy route when the identifiable person’s voice or likeness was used without permission and Instagram offers a privacy complaint option in your flow.
- Use a fraud or scam reason when the voice is being used to obtain money, credentials, or other property.
Instagram’s currently visible labels are not uniform enough to quote one universal click path. Before submitting, read the final category and explanation screen carefully so the reason you choose matches the evidence. If the app does not expose a suitable category, use the closest accurate option and describe the AI voice, identity claim, lack of consent, and harm in the text field.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake the same evidence packet for Instagram as for the other services. A report can be harder to evaluate after a reel is deleted, a username changes, or the account switches to private, so preserve the URL, handle, date, captions, comments, and recording before you submit.
Should you report the video, the account, or both?
Report both when both violations exist. A post-level report asks the platform to evaluate a particular piece of media; an account-level report asks it to evaluate the profile’s identity and behavior. Neither report replaces the other.
| Situation | Primary report | Additional action |
|---|---|---|
| One video uses an AI voice but the profile does not claim to be the person | Video or post report for synthetic or manipulated media, privacy, or impersonation, depending on the service | Use a privacy complaint if the identifiable person did not consent |
| The profile uses the person’s name, photo, or branding and presents itself as that person | Account impersonation report | Report each high-risk video separately |
| The video asks viewers to send money or credentials | Fraud or scam category, where available | Preserve evidence and notify the relevant financial, consumer-protection, or law-enforcement authority |
| The clip contains a direct threat, extortion, or blackmail | Safety, harassment, or threat category offered by the platform | Contact law enforcement promptly; do not negotiate with the sender as a substitute for reporting |
| The content concerns an election or coordinated civic deception | Manipulated-media or misinformation category | Preserve the original evidence and contact the appropriate election authority |
Pick the strongest category instead of selecting every label
Impersonation
Choose impersonation when the account or video presents the synthetic speaker as the real person. Point to the account name, profile image, caption, metadata, or spoken introduction that creates that impression.
Rank #4
Privacy or likeness removal
Use a privacy or likeness process when a real, uniquely identifiable person’s voice or appearance was realistically generated or altered without consent. Explain how the person can be identified and why the result is not an obvious fictional character or abstract parody.
Copyright
Copyright may apply when the claimant owns an original recording, video, script, or other protected work that was copied. Copyright does not automatically give someone ownership of the underlying fact that a person speaks, nor does it by itself establish control over every synthetic imitation of a voice. Do not use a copyright form merely because the voice sounds similar unless you can identify the copyrighted material and your rights in it.
Harassment, fraud, or safety
Add the category that describes the actual harm when the post targets a person, solicits money, exposes private information, threatens violence, or attempts extortion. A synthetic-media label alone may not communicate the urgency of a criminal or safety issue.
What to do when the platform does not remove it
Save the decision notice and the case reference, if provided, then check whether the service offers an appeal or additional privacy submission. Keep a dated record of every re-upload, changed handle, or new URL. Submit the new URL as a new item rather than assuming the first report automatically covers it.
If the target is a public figure, journalist, business, or organization, document the specific false statement and measurable harm. Public-interest or satirical context may receive protection, but a clear explanation of deception, lack of disclosure, and concrete harm gives reviewers the facts needed to distinguish commentary from a fabricated authentic statement.
Do not publicly repost the complete deepfake to “prove” the complaint. Sharing it can increase its reach and may expose the targeted person to further harm. If you must warn others, share a platform link or a neutral description only when doing so does not amplify the scam or threat.
Escalate serious cases beyond the platform
Platform moderation is not an emergency response service. Contact local law enforcement when the video contains a credible threat, stalking, blackmail, extortion, or an attempt to obtain money through deception. Preserve the original files, URLs, handles, timestamps, and messages in the format requested by investigators.
For financial fraud, also notify the bank, payment provider, or consumer-protection agency involved. For election-related manipulation, contact the relevant election authority and provide the original URL and capture time. Tell each authority whether the content remains online, has been re-uploaded, or has been removed, and avoid editing the only copy of the evidence.
Quick Recap
A reusable reporting checklist
- Copy the video URL, profile URL, handle, and upload date.
