Start by identifying the harm: an impersonation scam, a nonconsensual intimate image, or explicit imagery involving a child. Report the specific post or account to the platform first, then use the U.S. government route that matches the harm. Platform reporting seeks removal; fraud reporting creates an investigative record; child-safety and police reports address possible crimes.
Save the post URL, account name, date and time, messages, payment records, and the platform’s confirmation number when you can do so safely. Do not repost the material, and never download or forward explicit images of a child.

Identify which kind of deepfake you are reporting
A deepfake can be an altered image, video, or audio recording. An impersonator may use synthetic media to make a trusted person appear to ask for money, credentials, or other personal information. The reporting path changes substantially when the material is intimate or involves a child.

Someone uses an AI-generated voice, video, profile, or message to pose as a family member, executive, public official, business, or another trusted person and solicit money or information. Nonconsensual intimate image
This includes a real intimate image shared without permission and a digitally created or altered intimate image, including an AI deepfake. The priority is removal from the hosting platform and, if necessary, escalation over the platform’s failure to comply.
Explicit imagery involving a child
Treat any explicit AI-generated image that appears to depict a minor as a child-safety emergency. Do not save, copy, send, or upload the image yourself. Use child-focused reporting channels and ask the platform to remove the post.
Other deceptive or abusive content
For a manipulated political, reputational, or harassing post that does not fit those categories, use the platform’s rules and local police or cybercrime options when there is a threat, extortion, stalking, or another offense. The federal routes below are specific to the United States and to the harms described.
Choose the reporting route
| Situation | First report | Additional route | What the route is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impersonation scam or other fraud | Platform post or account | ReportFraud.ftc.gov; bank, IC3, and local police when money or accounts are involved | Documenting fraud, protecting funds, and helping investigators identify patterns |
| Nonconsensual intimate image or intimate deepfake | Report the image from its post or through the platform’s support page | TakeItDown.ftc.gov if the covered platform does not remove it or its process is unavailable | Removal of the hosted image and known identical copies, followed by platform-compliance escalation if needed |
| Explicit image that depicts a child | Platform removal request | Local police, NCMEC’s CyberTipline, the FBI, and NCMEC’s Take It Down service | Child protection, criminal investigation, and suppression of matching copies |
These routes can overlap. For example, an intimate deepfake used to demand cryptocurrency may require a platform report, an FTC fraud report, a bank or payment-provider call, and a police report. Filing one report does not automatically file the others.
Preserve useful evidence without spreading the material
Agencies do not publish one universal evidence checklist for every deepfake report. As a practical precaution, record information that identifies the incident without redistributing the image, audio, or video.
- Copy the post or profile URL, the account handle, and the platform name.
- Note when you saw the material and when you reported it, including your time zone if timing may matter.
- Keep the platform’s report confirmation, ticket number, or email.
- Save threatening messages, voice-mail details, email headers, and the sender’s contact information when available.
- For a financial scam, retain invoices, wire instructions, payment receipts, wallet addresses, phone numbers, and screenshots of the conversation.
- Write down what the impersonator claimed and what action they requested. This can help distinguish a fake request from a genuine account compromise.
Store notes in a private location and limit access to people who need them for a report. Do not quote or repost intimate material to “prove” that it is fake; linking investigators to the original post is safer than creating another copy. If a friend or colleague is the person being impersonated, tell them privately through a trusted channel rather than replying to the suspicious account.
Report the post and account to the platform
Every case should begin with the service hosting the content because only that service can remove its own post. Use the report control attached to the post, profile, message, or account rather than relying only on a general complaint.
- Open the original post, profile, message, or media item.
- Select the platform’s report option and choose the closest category, such as impersonation, fraud, nonconsensual intimate imagery, sexual exploitation, or child safety.
- Describe the conduct plainly. State whether the media is AI-generated or altered, who is being impersonated, whether money or information was requested, and whether the image is intimate or appears to depict a child.
- Submit the report and capture the confirmation page, ticket number, or email.
- Record the post URL and account details in your private incident notes. If the post disappears, retain the confirmation and the date you reported it.
Use the platform’s support page if the in-post tool is missing or repeatedly errors. For an intimate-image complaint, a missing or broken reporting process is itself relevant when you later escalate the platform’s handling to the Federal Trade Commission.
Report the account as well as individual posts when the service offers both choices. An account-level report can help address reposts or additional messages, while the post-level report identifies the exact material that requires review. Avoid arguing with the uploader or warning them that you reported the content; that can prompt deletion of useful account details or further targeting.

Nonconsensual intimate deepfakes: use the 48-hour removal process
The United States Take It Down Act (TIDA) covers a wide range of nonconsensual imagery, including real images and digital forgeries such as AI-created or altered images. FTC guidance says a covered platform must remove a validly reported intimate image and known identical copies within 48 hours.
Submit a valid platform report
Report the image from the post or through the platform’s support pages. Identify it as a nonconsensual intimate image and explain that it is an AI-generated or altered depiction if that is what happened. Keep the submission record and the location details for follow-up. The 48-hour period concerns a valid report to a covered platform; it is not a promise that every service, account, or type of media falls under the Act.
Include enough information for the platform to locate the image: the direct URL, username, and any post or message identifier. If the same file appears in several places on that service, list each location. Do not attach extra copies unless the platform’s form specifically requires information you cannot provide another way.
Escalate a failure or broken process
If the platform has not removed the material within 48 hours, or its reporting process is absent or unusable, report the platform’s noncompliance at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This is a complaint about the platform’s compliance with the removal obligation. The FTC cannot directly delete the hosted post; only the platform can remove content from its service.
Keep the original platform ticket, timestamps, and screenshots showing the failed form or unanswered request. The FTC escalation concerns the platform’s handling of a covered report; it does not guarantee immediate removal, damages, or a particular investigation outcome.
Understand the penalty figure
FTC business guidance published in May 2026 says a violation may result in a civil penalty of up to $53,088 per violation. That is an enforcement figure for a platform, not money owed to the person depicted and not a guaranteed award.

Use the FTC’s ReportFraud.ftc.gov process when an impersonator asks for money, account access, identity information, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or another benefit. The FTC asks you to describe what happened and provide details such as the person or business involved, payment information, and contact information if you wish to include it.
- Open ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Describe the impersonation and how synthetic audio, video, imagery, or text was used, if known.
- List the requested payment or information, the amount, the payment method, and any identifying contact details.
- Submit the report and save the report number and the next-step information the site provides.
The FTC says each report helps it build cases, stop scammers, and alert others to current trends. As FTC attorney Rosario Mendez explains, “Every time you file a report with the Federal Trade Commission you are helping us build cases, stop scammers, and also alert others about the current trends.” A report does not by itself reverse a payment or remove a post, so take the financial steps below immediately when relevant.
If you sent money
Contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service, or cryptocurrency provider through its official channel and ask what reversal, recall, or account-protection options remain. Tell the institution that the payment resulted from an impersonation scam and provide the transaction details. The FBI and American Bar Association Foundation also direct scam victims to report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and local police.

Act quickly even if the payment was authorized by you. A transfer, gift-card purchase, or cryptocurrency transaction may be difficult to reverse, but the provider can explain available steps and secure the account. Use the phone number or website printed on a statement or the provider’s official app, not a number supplied by the suspected scammer.
If you gave away a password, one-time code, Social Security number, bank details, or remote access, change affected credentials from a clean device, revoke active sessions, turn on multifactor authentication, and tell the institution that issued the account. These protective actions are separate from filing the fraud report. Watch for follow-up “recovery” offers: someone who promises to retrieve the money for an upfront fee may be running another impersonation scam.
Explicit AI imagery involving a child
Report the perpetrator to local police, NCMEC’s CyberTipline, or the FBI, and ask the hosting platform to remove the image. Give authorities the URL, account name, dates, and your report confirmation without downloading or forwarding the image.
NCMEC’s Take It Down service creates a hash, or digital fingerprint, to help participating services suppress matching copies. You do not need to send the original image to create that fingerprint. Use the service as a supplement to the platform report and law-enforcement referral, not as a replacement for either.
If a child may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services rather than waiting for an online form. Do not attempt to confront the suspected creator or investigate by contacting the account; preserve your safety and let investigators handle attribution. Tell a responsible parent, guardian, school safeguarding official, or other trusted adult when doing so will not increase the child’s risk.
Reduce future spread with hash-based services
Adults: StopNCII
For adults dealing with an intimate image, FTC advice identifies StopNCII as a free global service. It creates a digital fingerprint on your device and shares the fingerprint—not the original image—with participating platforms. A matching service can use that fingerprint to identify and limit future copies within its network.
Minors: NCMEC’s Take It Down
For images of minors, use NCMEC’s Take It Down service. Its hash-based approach is designed to help suppress matching copies online without asking you to upload the original image.
Neither service removes the original post from every website, and neither replaces a direct report to the platform hosting the material. Continue to report each known host and use police or federal child-safety channels when the facts warrant it. A hash generally works best for the same or matching file; a resized, cropped, or otherwise changed version may require a new report or additional hash submission.
What to do when the first report fails
The platform rejects or closes the report
Keep the case number and submit a focused appeal through the platform’s support channel. Quote the specific policy category that applies and explain the harm in factual terms. Do not create duplicate public posts that expose the person again.

The post moves to another account
Record the new URL and handle, then submit a fresh report. For intimate imagery, a known identical copy is part of the covered removal obligation when the platform receives a valid report. Hash-based services can help participating platforms recognize matching files, but they do not eliminate the need to report a new host.
The platform has no usable reporting route
For an intimate image, document the missing or broken process and escalate the platform to TakeItDown.ftc.gov. For a scam, file the consumer-fraud report and provide the platform name and account details. For child imagery, use the CyberTipline, local police, or the FBI rather than waiting for a platform response.
You are unsure whether the media is synthetic
Do not make authenticity the only basis for a report. Describe what you observed, identify the person shown or impersonated, and explain the requested payment, threat, sexual harm, or child-safety concern. Investigators and the platform can assess whether the file is generated, edited, or genuine.

Why a report is still useful when removal is the priority
Removal protects the immediate target, while aggregate reports help agencies identify repeat offenders and techniques. An FBI and American Bar Association Foundation infographic published in 2025 cites more than 4.2 million fraud reports and $50.5 billion in losses since 2020. Those figures cover broad fraud and are not a count of deepfake scams specifically.
Reporting therefore serves two different purposes: the platform complaint seeks action on a particular post, and a government fraud or crime report supplies information that can connect separate incidents. Keep those purposes distinct so you know what result each form can realistically provide.
Frequently asked questions
Should I report the account or only the deepfake post?
Do both when the platform provides separate options. The post report identifies the exact image, video, audio, or message for review. The account report can address repeated uploads, impersonation, or direct messages. Keep each confirmation number and URL.
Does reporting to the FTC remove the image?
No. ReportFraud.ftc.gov creates a consumer-fraud record, and TakeItDown.ftc.gov accepts complaints about a covered platform’s failure to follow the intimate-image removal process. Only the hosting platform can remove content from its service, so submit the platform report first and retain its record.

Best Value
Can I use StopNCII for an image of a child?
No. FTC guidance points adults to StopNCII and directs reports involving minors to NCMEC’s Take It Down. For a child depiction, also use the CyberTipline, local police, or the FBI and request removal from the hosting platform.
What if I only heard an AI voice and have no recording?
Report what you know. Note the caller’s number or account, date and time, the claimed identity, the request, and any payment instructions. You can report an impersonation scam even when you cannot prove the audio was synthetic; the platform or investigators can evaluate authenticity.
What if I paid with cryptocurrency or a gift card?
Contact the exchange, wallet provider, gift-card issuer, or payment service through its official channel immediately and provide transaction codes, wallet addresses, receipts, and communications. Also file with ReportFraud.ftc.gov, consider IC3 and local police, and keep the FTC report number for follow-up.

Usually notify them through a verified phone number, email address, or other trusted channel, not by replying to the suspicious account. They may need to warn contacts, secure their account, and report the impersonation themselves. Do not forward intimate or child-related material.
What if the platform says the image is not covered?
Save that decision and appeal through the platform’s support route with the exact URL and a factual explanation of the nonconsensual intimate nature or other harm. If a covered intimate-image report is not removed within 48 hours, or the reporting process is unavailable, document the failure and use TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
Final incident checklist
- Classify the harm before choosing a form: scam, intimate image, or child-safety material.
- Report the original post or account to the hosting platform.
- Save URLs, handles, dates, messages, payment records, and confirmation numbers without redistributing explicit material.
- Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov for impersonation fraud and contact the bank promptly if money was sent.
- Use TakeItDown.ftc.gov when a covered platform fails to remove a validly reported intimate image within 48 hours or lacks a working process.
- For explicit imagery involving a child, contact local police, NCMEC’s CyberTipline, or the FBI and use NCMEC’s Take It Down service.
- Use StopNCII for adult intimate-image hash matching and NCMEC’s Take It Down for minors, understanding that both supplement—not replace—the host-platform report.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest first step after finding a deepfake?
Record the URL, account name, and time, then report the specific post or message through the platform’s built-in tool. Choose the category that matches the harm and save the confirmation before taking additional steps.
Where do I report an impersonator who requested money?
Report the account to its platform and file at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you sent money, contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service, or cryptocurrency provider immediately; also consider IC3 and local police.

A covered platform should remove a validly reported nonconsensual intimate image and known identical copies within 48 hours. If it does not, or its reporting process is missing or broken, document the failure and report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov.
What should I do if a child appears in explicit AI imagery?
Do not download, forward, or upload the image. Report the post to the platform and contact local police, NCMEC’s CyberTipline, or the FBI. NCMEC’s Take It Down service can create a hash to help suppress matching copies.
Will an FTC report automatically remove a post or refund me?
No. FTC reports support enforcement and pattern detection. The platform controls removal, and your financial institution must handle any payment-reversal or account-protection request.
Can I report content if I am not certain it is AI-generated?
Yes. Describe what you observed and the harm—impersonation, fraud, nonconsensual intimacy, threats, or child safety—without making an unverified technical claim. The platform and investigators can assess whether it is synthetic, altered, or genuine.
