If an AI-generated video, image or audio clip impersonates you in India, take three parallel steps: report the exact content to the platform and its Grievance Officer, file a report with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, and preserve a complete record of what happened. If the platform’s grievance decision is unsatisfactory, appeal online to the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC). The routes serve different purposes; filing one is not described by the official guidance as a prerequisite for filing another.
For qualifying complaints about electronic impersonation, including artificially morphed images, the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules) provision reproduced on the GAC’s Rights of Users page requires the intermediary to take all reasonable and practicable measures to remove or disable access within 24 hours of receiving the complaint. That deadline is scoped, and it does not guarantee a particular investigation or outcome.

Do this first: a same-day response plan
Speed matters because copies can spread, but do not sacrifice evidence while trying to make a post disappear. Work through these steps in order, keeping the details you will need for every later report.

Record the platform or service, account or profile name, post or message URL, video or image URL if different, and the date and time you found it. Note whether the material is public, in a group, behind a login, or being sent privately.
- Preserve a safe record. Save screenshots or a lawful copy of the content, the account page, visible captions, comments and platform warnings. Keep the original file if someone sent it to you. Do not download or forward sexual material involving a minor, and do not redistribute a humiliating file merely to prove that it exists.
- Report the exact item in the platform’s reporting tool. Select the closest category, then write that the content uses your identity or likeness, is AI-generated or artificially morphed, and impersonates you. Include the direct URL rather than only the account name.
- Send the same facts through the platform’s published grievance channel. Find the current Grievance Officer or grievance mechanism in the service’s help, legal or safety pages. A separate grievance submission creates a clearer record than relying only on a button inside the app.
- File a government cybercrime report. Use the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Government material expressly identifies deepfakes and social-media URLs as reportable there.
- Track every reference. Save confirmation emails, SMS messages, ticket numbers, copies of your wording and the times you submitted each report. The portal’s official FAQ says a complaint filed through its “Report and Track” or “Report Other Cybercrime” option receives a complaint reference by SMS and email.
Describe the conduct, not just the word “deepfake”
A reviewer must be able to identify both the content and the way it misuses your identity. The label “deepfake” alone may not explain why the post is unlawful or why it should be removed.

Facts to include
- Your name and a reliable way to contact you.
- The exact post, message, profile, account or other location, with a full URL where available.
- What the material shows or says, and which features identify you: your face, voice, name, biographical details or a combination.
- Why it is not authentic and why it presents itself as you or appears intended to make viewers believe it is you.
- That the media is AI-generated, synthetically generated or artificially morphed, if that is how you understand it.
- The practical harm you are experiencing, such as people contacting you about the post, threats, reputational damage or misuse of your identity. Keep this factual and specific.
- If the material exposes a private area, shows full or partial nudity, or depicts a sexual act or conduct, say so plainly. Those categories are expressly included in the 24-hour provision reproduced on the GAC page.
- What you want the intermediary to do: remove the item, disable access to it, and address copies or linked locations that you identify.
Use neutral language. Do not accuse a named person of a crime unless you are reporting an observable fact and can support it. If you do not know who made the file, say that you do not know.
A concise complaint you can adapt
Subject: Urgent complaint about AI-generated impersonation of meI am the person depicted or impersonated in this content: [full URL]. The image/video/audio uses my [face/voice/name] and is AI-generated or artificially morphed. It is presented in a way that could make viewers believe it is me. [If applicable: It shows nudity, a private area, or a sexual act.] Please remove the content or disable access and address the copies at these URLs: [list]. I request action under the applicable IT Rules grievance provision. My contact details are [details]. Please confirm receipt and provide the complaint reference.
Replace every bracketed item before sending. Keep a copy of the final version exactly as submitted.
Request removal from the platform hosting the content
Use both reporting layers
The in-app or web report alerts the service to the individual post. The published Grievance Officer route is the formal channel for a user’s complaint about unlawful content. Government guidance says an individual can ask the concerned intermediary’s Grievance Officer to act on content that impersonates them.
Submit one report per distinct URL when the service’s system allows it. If a single form accepts multiple links, list each link on its own line and explain which account or post it belongs to. If the material is in a private message or closed group, report the message and identify the sender and group without publicly reposting the file.

What the 24-hour rule covers
The GAC’s official Rights of Users page reproduces Rule 3(2)(b) of the IT Rules in this form:
“The intermediary shall, within twenty-four hours from the receipt of a complaint made by an individual or any person on his behalf under this sub-rule, in relation to any content which is prima facie in the nature of any material which exposes the private area of such individual, shows such individual in full or partial nudity or shows or depicts such individual in any sexual act or conduct, or is in the nature of impersonation in an electronic form, including artificially morphed images of such individual, take all reasonable and practicable measures to remove or disable access to such content which is hosted, stored, published or transmitted by it.”

For a complaint that fits that description, the clock starts when the intermediary receives the complaint. The wording requires “all reasonable and practicable measures”; it does not promise that every copy will disappear, that an account will be closed, or that a complainant will receive a particular decision.
Understand the different grievance periods
Do not treat every deepfake-related complaint as having one universal deadline. The GAC page describes several periods with different scopes.

The dates above describe duties and periods reproduced in the GAC material, not guaranteed enforcement performance. Keep the time of submission because it establishes when the intermediary received your complaint.

File a report with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal
A platform complaint seeks action by the service that hosts the material. A cybercrime report documents the incident through a Government of India channel for cybercrime and law-enforcement handling. File it even when the platform has removed the post, because a removed copy may not be the only copy and the government record preserves the incident’s details.

Prepare before opening the form
- Have the URLs, usernames, dates and times, screenshots and your description ready.
- Keep the platform ticket or grievance reference if one has already been issued.
- Write a short chronology: when you found the content, when you reported it, and what happened afterward.
- Identify whether the material is an image, video, audio clip, live stream, profile or message, and whether it is still accessible.
Submit and retain the reference
- Open cybercrime.gov.in, choose the reporting path that matches the incident, and follow the portal’s current on-screen instructions.
- Enter the social-media or other content URLs exactly as they appear. If there are several copies, list each one rather than assuming the portal can infer them.
- Describe the impersonation and synthetic creation in plain language, including any nudity, sexual depiction or threats.
- Attach or enter supporting details requested by the form. Share only what is necessary and safe to submit.
- Submit the report and preserve the complaint reference delivered by SMS and email, as described in the portal FAQ.
The official material identifies an anonymous option for certain women- and child-related crime reports. Do not assume that every report type is anonymous; check the option and instructions displayed for your category.
Appeal an unsatisfactory platform decision to the GAC
If the intermediary’s Grievance Officer rejects your complaint, does not provide a satisfactory response, or otherwise leaves the grievance unresolved, the Government’s guidance identifies an online appeal route at gac.gov.in.
Build the appeal record
- Copy the original content URLs and the platform account details.
- Attach the wording of your original complaint and the date and time it was received.
- Include the platform’s decision, explanation, ticket number or lack of response.
- Explain in a few sentences why the decision is unsatisfactory and what action you seek.
- Keep the cybercrime portal reference separate; it documents a different route and does not replace the platform grievance record.
The official descriptions do not state that a cybercrime report must be filed before a GAC appeal, or that a GAC appeal must be filed before reporting to law enforcement. Treat the routes as complementary and follow the current form requirements on the GAC site.
Keep evidence without amplifying the harm
Your record should allow a reviewer to locate the content after it changes. For each item, preserve the URL, account name, caption, visible date, report time and any case number. A screenshot should show enough of the page to connect the media to the account or post. If the platform provides a download of your report or decision, save that file as well.

Store the material in a private, access-controlled location. Do not post the file publicly to ask strangers to identify it, and do not send intimate material to people who do not need it for a report. When you must show evidence to a platform or government form, use the service’s secure upload process and follow its instructions.
If the content is deleted before you save a copy, keep the URL, account details, screenshots of any notification, and the times you saw and reported it. A missing file does not prevent you from describing the incident.

Non-sexual face or voice impersonation
Emphasize the identity elements and the false impression that you created, said or endorsed the material. Quote the specific claim or caption that makes the impersonation misleading, then request removal or access disabling for each URL.
Nudity or sexual depiction
State the category directly instead of hiding it behind a general “deepfake” label. Identify whether the content shows a private area, full or partial nudity, or a sexual act or conduct. Limit attachments to the channels that need them and avoid forwarding the file.
Multiple reposts or changing URLs
Make a list of every known copy and submit updates when you find a new location. Keep the original platform ticket number in each follow-up so the service can connect the reports without losing the chronology.
Content sent privately
Report the message, sender and conversation location through the platform’s private-reporting mechanism. Do not publish the message publicly in order to create a link. In the cybercrime report, describe how and when it was sent and provide the available account details.
After you submit
- Check the platform’s case status and your email or in-app notifications, but do not repeatedly submit contradictory versions of the same facts.
- Record every response, including an automated acknowledgment, a request for more information, a removal notice or a refusal.
- If the content reappears, report the new URL and note that it is a repost or copy of the previously reported impersonation.
- Update your cybercrime report only through the portal’s available mechanism, keeping the original reference intact.
- Use the GAC appeal route if the Grievance Officer’s decision is unsatisfactory, and include the decision you are challenging.
Do not promise friends, employers or followers that a removal will be immediate. The formal duties describe measures and response periods, while actual handling can depend on the intermediary’s review and the content’s locations.
What these routes can and cannot guarantee
The official Government and GAC material establishes formal ways to complain, a scoped 24-hour removal or access-disabling duty for qualifying impersonation and specified intimate-content complaints, the cybercrime portal’s acceptance of deepfake and social-media-URL reports, and an online appeal to the GAC. It does not establish a guaranteed investigation, a guaranteed takedown of every copy, a guaranteed account suspension, or a guaranteed response from a particular officer.

Platform labels, forms and grievance contacts can change. Use the affected service’s currently published channel, quote the exact URLs and dates, and preserve the evidence of what you submitted. The IT Rules were amended on 10 February 2026 to address synthetically generated information, including deepfakes; a Government press release dated 5 August 2026 describes related platform obligations. For details beyond the quoted provision, rely on the operative rule text and the current official instructions rather than assuming that every synthetic-media complaint has identical treatment.
