Report the specific post through the platform’s built-in reporting menu, choose the closest accurate category—such as election misinformation, manipulated media, deepfakes, or impersonation—and describe the claim and why it appears misleading. If it gives false voting instructions, contact the relevant election authority too. AI generation alone does not prove a post violates platform rules, and submitting a report does not guarantee removal.
What to include in a report
- Open the original post and use its report option. Report the post itself when possible; report the account as well only if its conduct independently appears to violate the rules.
- Choose the closest factual category available. A fabricated video of a candidate might fit manipulated media or impersonation; a false polling date or voting instruction may fit election misinformation or voter suppression.
- Explain plainly what the post claims, what appears false or deceptively altered, and which election or location it concerns. Add the post link or identifying details if the form allows it.
- Keep a private note of the post URL, account name, date and time you saw it, and the specific claim. This is a practical recordkeeping suggestion, not a universal platform requirement.
- Check for a report-status or follow-up option. Avoid reposting or quote-posting the content to criticize it unless necessary for a carefully framed correction; UK government guidance cautions that responding can inadvertently amplify disinformation (UK electoral security guidance).
Do not label ordinary political disagreement as misinformation just because it is political or AI-generated. Focus on a verifiable false claim, deceptive alteration, impersonation, or other specific policy concern.

How to report on each platform

When to contact election officials or emergency services
False information about voting logistics
If a post gives a false polling date, location, method, eligibility rule, or other practical voting instruction, verify the information with the relevant election authority and report the false claim to that office. A platform report alone may not reach the people who need to correct election information.

In the United States, CISA advises reporting suspicious social-media posts or accounts to the platform and election disinformation to state or local election officials. It recommends relying on trusted sources such as local election officials for election information; the guidance does not provide one national reporting form for every kind of political misinformation (CISA election security guidance).

In the UK, election security guidance directs affected candidates and officials to report details to the platform and their political party. Election officials should report deepfakes and false election-administration information—including when, where, how, or who can vote—to their area’s Returning Officer. Candidates may also contact the Returning Officer (UK electoral security guidance). Elsewhere, use the official contact channel for the relevant national or local election authority; escalation procedures vary by jurisdiction.
Immediate danger or a suspected crime
If a post signals a credible immediate threat, contact local emergency services rather than relying on a platform report. In the UK, the cited guidance says to call 999 in an immediate danger situation and to report suspected criminal offences to police promptly. Emergency numbers and reporting duties differ elsewhere.

What a report can—and cannot—do
Platform rules generally focus on the nature and likely effects of content, not simply whether AI was used. YouTube’s policies address specified election misinformation and certain manipulated content; X’s rules address inauthentic media that may cause serious harm or confusion; Meta describes intervention against the most serious misinformation and some altered media. A report asks the platform to review content under its rules; it does not establish that the post is false or require the platform to remove it.

Keep the distinction between a convincing-looking edit and a verified falsehood in mind. Do not claim a video is a deepfake based on appearance alone. If the claim concerns voting logistics, check an official election source before sharing a correction.
