Report the specific false civic claim, not merely the fact that a video was made with AI. First preserve the post’s URL, account details, time, screenshots and the exact statement. Then use the platform’s own report menu and select the closest reason—false information, voter interference, impersonation, manipulated media or another civic-integrity violation. Explain what is false, provide the correct context, and describe the possible effect on voting, candidate safety, public order or participation. Reporting does not guarantee removal, a label, an account suspension or a personal response.
What counts as AI-generated political misinformation?
AI-generated content can be synthetic video, audio, images or text, or genuine media altered with machine-learning tools. The technology and the political claim are separate questions. A video may be synthetically generated yet contain a harmless parody, while an ordinary camera recording can still make a false claim about a polling place or election date. A label saying that media is AI-generated is therefore not, by itself, proof that the political statement is misinformation.

The report should identify the concrete civic claim. Examples include a fabricated statement that a candidate is legally barred from appearing on the ballot, a false instruction about when or where to vote, an invented election date, or a manipulated clip presented as evidence that could provoke violence. Describe the claim in your own words and quote the exact words or show the precise image that viewers are being asked to believe.
Policies differ by country, device and account state, and platforms can change menu labels during an election. The paths below describe the controls and policy distinctions documented by each service; if a label has moved, choose the current option with the closest meaning rather than an inaccurate category.

Preserve evidence before you report
Moderators need enough information to find the material and understand the alleged harm. Capture evidence before the post is edited, deleted or hidden. Do not download or redistribute harmful material unnecessarily; a screenshot or short screen recording is usually enough.
- Copy the direct URL. Use the post, video or profile link rather than a search-results page. If the service offers separate links for a post and its account, save both.
- Record the account identity. Note the handle, display name and, for an impersonation report, the account that appears to be imitated.
- Record when you saw it. Write the date and time, including your time zone if the timing could matter to an election or a rapidly changing event.
- Capture the content. Take screenshots or a screen recording that shows the post, captions, visible labels, comments that establish context and the account name. For a video, note the relevant timestamp.
- Transcribe the allegation. Copy the exact spoken or written words, the on-screen text and any purported date, place, candidate or election authority named in the media.
- Save corrective context. Identify the official information or reliable source that contradicts the claim, and explain the contradiction in plain language. Preserve the source for your own records rather than reposting the harmful material.
- Assess immediate risk. If the post threatens a person, encourages violence or gives a time-sensitive false voting instruction, say so explicitly in the report. If there is an immediate danger, contact appropriate local emergency or election authorities instead of relying on a platform report alone.
Write a report moderators can act on
A useful report is short, specific and centered on harm. State what the content says, why it is false, what the correct context is and how it could affect civic participation or safety. Mention that the media appears synthetic only as supporting information; do not treat “AI” as the entire allegation.
A practical report structure
- Identify the item: include the direct URL, handle and the relevant video timestamp or frame.
- Quote the claim: reproduce the exact statement, such as a false polling-place instruction or an invented eligibility ruling.
- Explain the correction: give the verified date, location, rule or event that conflicts with it.
- Describe the civic harm: explain whether it could stop people voting, mislead them about election procedures, endanger a candidate, trigger violence or disrupt a peaceful transfer of power.
- Describe manipulation evidence: note a synthetic voice, altered lip movement, fabricated caption or other observable edit, without claiming certainty you cannot establish.
- Choose the narrowest accurate category: false information, voter interference, impersonation, manipulated media, edited or AI-generated content, or the closest civic-integrity option.
Do not ask friends to mass-report the same post or select a category that does not fit. Large numbers of inaccurate reports can obscure the actual issue and may violate a service’s abuse rules. One well-documented report is more useful than repeated submissions with different reasons.

Example wording
“This video claims that voting in [place] ends on [date]. The official election information says voting ends on [correct date]. The false date could prevent eligible voters from participating. The speaker’s face and voice also appear digitally altered. The relevant timestamp is [time], and the post URL is [URL].”
Replace the bracketed items with your actual evidence. Do not include private information about other users unless it is necessary to explain impersonation or a safety risk.
Facebook (Meta): report the false civic claim or impersonator
What Meta’s policy distinction means
Meta says it keeps many manipulated or AI-generated posts online with labels and additional context. Separately, it enforces rules against voter interference, electoral violence and inaccurate information about when, where or how to vote. That means a synthetic-media label is not a finding that the political statement is false, and the absence of a label is not proof that the media is authentic.

Meta has stated: “We agree with the Oversight Board’s recommendation that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address manipulated media.” The practical implication is to report the underlying civic harm, not to rely on an “AI” allegation alone. Meta also says users can report accounts that impersonate another person.
How to submit a report
- Open the post containing the video, image or text, or open the account that appears to be impersonating someone.
- Open the post or account menu and choose Report.
- Select the category that matches the concrete problem: false information, voter interference, electoral violence, inaccurate voting information, impersonation or the closest available civic-integrity reason.
- Describe the exact false claim, provide the correction and explain the potential effect on voting, safety or public order. Attach context if the form allows it.
- Submit once and retain the URL and screenshots in your records.
What to expect
Meta’s approach can leave manipulated content online with a label or added context. A report may therefore result in context rather than deletion, and this article cannot promise either outcome. If the account is an impersonator, make clear whose identity is being copied and show the relevant profile details.
YouTube: use the video report menu and include timestamps
Claims covered by the elections policy
YouTube’s elections policy covers false claims that a candidate is ineligible, misleading information about election procedures, and external links that create a serious risk of egregious harm. The policy question is the civic deception and its likely consequence; a synthetic voice or face is useful context but is not automatically a policy violation.

How to report a video or Short
- Sign in to YouTube and open the video.
- Choose More → Report.
- Select the best reason offered by the form and continue through the prompts.
- For a Short or any video with a particular deceptive moment, provide the timestamp or a concise description when prompted. Identify the exact words, frame or link that creates the risk.
- Submit the report and save the URL and your evidence.
YouTube says reports are anonymous, reviewed under its guidelines and are not automatic takedown requests. Its help guidance states: “When content is reported, it’s not automatically taken down.” You can check Reporting History for the status shown for your reports. A status update does not mean the platform has adopted your factual conclusion, and no particular enforcement result is guaranteed.

How TikTok defines AI-generated content
TikTok defines AI-generated content (AIGC) as media created or modified by artificial intelligence or machine-learning processes. Its rules prohibit civic or election misinformation that could interfere with voting, disrupt the peaceful transfer of power or lead to violence off the platform. A video can therefore raise two related issues: how it was made and what civic deception it communicates.

- Open the video and choose the sharing or options menu.
- Select Report.
- Choose the closest reason, such as Edited Media and AI-Generated Content, impersonation, misinformation or a civic-integrity category.
- Explain the false election claim, give the correct context and state whether it could interfere with voting, threaten someone or contribute to off-platform violence.
- Include a timestamp, visible account details and any requested supporting information, then submit.
TikTok’s help guidance specifically directs users to report videos that violate its AIGC policy. Use that option when the synthetic presentation itself matters, but still describe the false political statement. Selecting only a generic “AI” reason can leave the central election harm unexplained.
Labels and review outcomes can vary. TikTok may apply an AIGC label, limit distribution or take another action under its rules; the report form does not promise removal or a personal response.
X: report the post under civic-integrity reasons
What X prohibits
X’s civic-integrity policy prohibits misleading information about how to participate in an election and false statements about the official date or time of a civic process. Focus the report on the false instruction or date and explain the likely effect on participation. Mention synthetic editing when it helps establish why viewers may be deceived.
How to report a post
- Open the post and its top menu.
- Choose Report post.
- Select the reason that best describes the civic-integrity problem and complete the prompts.
- Provide the exact claim, the correct information, the post URL and any timestamp or screenshot that makes the deception clear.
- Submit the report and keep your evidence.
X explains that reporting a post or List does not automatically suspend the account. In the reporter’s view, the original post is replaced with a notice while X evaluates the report. That notice is not a finding that the claim is false, and the account may remain active after review. X’s Help Center states: “Reporting a post or List does not automatically result in the account being suspended.”

What happens after you submit a report?
A platform may leave the content up, attach a label or context, reduce its distribution, remove the post, restrict an account or take no visible action. The services describe different feedback mechanisms: YouTube offers Reporting History, X replaces the item in the reporter’s view during evaluation, Meta emphasizes transparency and context for much manipulated media, and TikTok combines AIGC labeling with election-integrity enforcement. None of these mechanisms is a promise that the content will disappear or that the account will be suspended.
Keep your evidence after submitting. If the post changes, record the new wording and time rather than filing repeated reports with conflicting categories. If a platform provides an appeal or follow-up path, use the reference or status information it gives you. For a false voting date, location or procedure that could affect people immediately, also notify the relevant election authority or trusted local civic organization; platform review can take longer than the voting window.
Safety and evidence-handling rules
- Do not quote-share or repost the deepfake simply to criticize it; amplification can increase its reach.
- Blur unrelated personal information in screenshots when it is not needed to establish the claim or impersonation.
- Do not confront an apparent impersonator or threat actor directly. Preserve evidence and use the platform and appropriate authorities.
- Use a private, accurate description. Do not guess who made the media or assert that a clip is synthetic when you only know the statement is false.
- Check the account, date and context before reporting satire, commentary or an altered clip that is clearly labeled and not making a deceptive civic claim.

Use the platform-native control, describe the claim precisely and preserve your records. That gives reviewers the clearest basis to apply their civic-integrity rules while avoiding the mistaken assumption that an AI label alone proves misinformation.
