If you encounter suspected AI-generated or altered child sexual abuse material (CSAM), report it promptly. In the United States, submit a tip to the NCMEC CyberTipline; the FBI also directs people who know about AI-related CSAM production to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). If a child is in immediate danger, call 911. Do not download, copy, forward, or repost the material. If a child is affected, offer support and involve a trusted adult when appropriate.
Where to report suspected AI-generated CSAM in the United States
Use the route that matches the urgency and purpose. Reporting an incident and asking a platform to remove an image are different actions.

| Situation | What to do | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| A child is in immediate danger or there is an emergency | Call 911, as advised by the U.S. Department of Justice. | Get emergency help. |
| You encountered suspected online child exploitation | Submit a report to the NCMEC CyberTipline. | NCMEC reviews public tips and works to identify the possible incident location so information can be made available to the appropriate law-enforcement agency for possible investigation. |
| You know about AI-related CSAM production | Report to NCMEC and the FBI’s IC3. | The FBI names both as reporting routes for CSAM production that includes AI-generated material. |
| You need to request removal of an explicit image | Consider NCMEC’s Take It Down service. | It anonymously requests removal from participating platforms; it is not a substitute for reporting suspected exploitation. |
NCMEC describes the CyberTipline as the U.S. centralized reporting system for online child exploitation. It accepts reports from the public and electronic service providers, including suspected CSAM and online enticement. If you are outside the United States, contact local law enforcement or the appropriate national child-protection hotline.

What to do with the material and information you already have
Do not download, save, copy, screenshot, forward, or repost suspected CSAM to preserve or prove what you saw. This article is not a technical forensic protocol: the reviewed official public guidance does not set out a detailed evidence-preservation workflow for the general public.

If material is already in your possession, do not make more copies or send it to others; ask law enforcement how to handle it. Avoid trying to investigate the account or contact the person responsible.
If someone made an AI nude of your child
Take the child seriously, stay calm, and make clear that they are not to blame. NCMEC advises that a child who has experienced GAI-created nude or sexually explicit imagery should report to law enforcement and the CyberTipline. It encourages children to speak with a trusted adult and adults to support the child and report.

Why suspected synthetic imagery still merits a report
AI-generated, manipulated, or fabricated imagery can depict an identifiable child even when the image does not show an actual abuse photograph. NCMEC says, “Using GAI to create child sexual abuse imagery and nude or exploitative images of a child should always be reported and taken seriously.”

- Sturdy black expandable bag

The FBI’s IC3 states, “The FBI is warning the public that child sexual abuse material (CSAM) created with content manipulation technologies, to include generative artificial intelligence (AI), is illegal.” This is the FBI’s public statement, not a substitute for legal advice.
U.S. legal context
The FBI summarizes U.S. federal law as prohibiting production, advertisement, transportation, distribution, receipt, sale, access with intent to view, and possession of CSAM, including realistic computer-generated images. That is a U.S. federal-law summary; it does not describe every jurisdiction’s law or establish how every synthetic image will be treated in every case.

What NCMEC’s AI figures do—and do not—show
NCMEC reports that its staff categorized more than 158,000 images and videos submitted in CyberTipline reports as AI-generated between January 2023 and December 2025. Separately, it says more than 400,000 CyberTipline reports had a GAI nexus in 2025. A GAI nexus does not mean each report concerned generated CSAM: NCMEC’s categories include different reported uses of AI, and more than 200,000 additional reports indicated a GAI nexus without enough information to determine how AI was used.

These are report categories, not counts of confirmed individual images or victims, and should not be added together as though they were such counts.
