Who should you contact, and how urgently?

In the United States, USAGov advises contacting local law enforcement and directs people to the agency where the crime took place: USAGov’s crime-reporting guidance. Elsewhere, check the relevant local police force’s official instructions.

How to make the report
- Check for immediate danger. If anyone is at risk or an emergency is unfolding, contact emergency services using the number for your location.
- Find the right agency. Report to the police or law-enforcement agency responsible for where the car was taken or last seen. Use that agency’s current website or non-emergency line for instructions.
- Choose a locally available channel. Depending on the force, reporting may be available online, by telephone, or in person. For example, Police Scotland lists all three routes for its service; that does not mean every force offers each option.
- Give the facts you know. Describe the vehicle and the best available time and place information. Be clear when a time or detail is uncertain rather than guessing.
- Share possible evidence and leads. Mention witnesses, CCTV, tracking-app information, unusual circumstances, or items left behind. Avoid unnecessary handling of objects that might carry fingerprints, as West Yorkshire Police advises.
- Ask how to get the reference number. Write down the crime or incident reference and keep it somewhere accessible.
- Notify your insurer promptly. Follow its instructions for starting a claim and pass along relevant developments.
What information should you have ready?
Vehicle identifiers
- Registration number or number plate, if it is a road-registered vehicle.
- Make and model.
- Colour.
- Distinctive features that may help identify it, if known.
Avon and Somerset Police specifically identifies the registration or number plate, make, model, and colour. This is a useful core set of details, not a universal list of mandatory fields.

When, where, and what happened
- When and where you last saw the car, and when you noticed it was missing.
- Where it had been parked and who last had access to it, if known.
- Whether keys, documents, or personal belongings may have been taken with it.
- Any witness, CCTV, tracker, or other lead that could help locate the vehicle or establish what happened.
These details may help police understand the incident, but local forms and call handlers differ. Answer the questions you are asked, explain what you do not know, and do not delay making the report while searching for a detail you cannot readily confirm.
Your contact and relationship to the car
Be ready to give your name and a reliable way for police to reach you. Explain whether you are the owner, registered keeper, or reporting on someone else’s behalf. The initial reporting requirements vary; the cited guidance does not establish a universal rule that you must first produce a title, registration document, or other proof of ownership.

What to do after reporting
Keep the police reference number
Store the crime or incident reference number with your notes about the report. Avon and Somerset Police says insurers will request the crime reference number: its stolen-vehicle guidance explains the reference’s role.

Tell your insurer promptly and follow its process for a stolen-vehicle claim. The insurer may ask for documents or details beyond those needed to make the initial police report. A police report supports the claim process; it does not by itself establish that a policy covers the loss or guarantee payment. West Yorkshire Police also recommends notifying the insurer and keeping it informed of developments.

Contact an existing tracking provider
If the car already has an installed tracker, contact that provider and follow its instructions. West Yorkshire Police advises giving the tracking company the incident reference number. This is a follow-up for vehicles with an existing service, not a reason to delay the police report.

Reporting channels, forms, and follow-up responsibilities depend on your jurisdiction and police force. Use the current official instructions for the place where the theft occurred. For example, Avon and Somerset Police says it notifies the DVLA about a theft or recovery, but that is a force-specific procedure; do not assume it applies outside that context or replaces any separate obligation you may have.
