Call the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish at 888-248-6866. The state also lists Operation Game Thief at 800-432-4263 (1-800-432-GAME) and local law enforcement as reporting options when an animal looks out of place in the wild.

“If you see an animal that looks out of place in the wild, please contact the department at 888-248-6866, Operation Game Thief at 800-432-4263 or contact your local law enforcement agency.”

Report what you observed rather than trying to capture or handle the animal. Give the agency the location, time, number of animals, direction of travel, and a careful description. A photograph can help, but it is optional and should be taken only from a safe distance.

Which number should you use?

Use the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Department of Wildlife Information Center for an unusual-animal sighting. The published state instruction gives 888-248-6866 as the department contact. It also gives two alternatives: Operation Game Thief at 800-432-4263 and local law enforcement.

The best channel depends on what you observed:

Situation Appropriate route What to explain
An unfamiliar or apparently non-native animal in the wild Department of Game and Fish / Department of Wildlife Information Center Species impression, location, time, count, behavior, and direction of travel
A suspected wildlife-law violation, illegal take, or other wildlife crime Operation Game Thief by phone or its online reporting form The suspected violation, people or vehicles involved, exact location, time, and observable evidence
Immediate danger to people or traffic Local emergency services or law enforcement, as appropriate The hazard, precise location, road or landmark, and whether anyone is injured

Operation Game Thief is the state’s wildlife-violation reporting tool. Its online form accepts anonymous reports and asks for the species, an animal description, the location, and details of what happened. You do not need to know the animal’s scientific name before submitting a report.

What to do before you call or submit a report

  1. Move to a safe position. Stay in your vehicle, behind a barrier, or at a distance that keeps you away from horns, hooves, traffic, and cliffs. Do not approach a large unfamiliar animal to improve a photograph.
  2. Do not feed, chase, corner, or attempt to capture it. Pursuit can stress the animal, cause a collision, or turn a sighting into a public-safety incident. Never try to transport it or place it in a trailer, pen, or vehicle.
  3. Check the surroundings without disturbing the scene. Note the nearest road, trail, park entrance, ranch, water source, fence, or other landmark. If you are using a map, record coordinates only if you can do so without handling a phone while driving.
  4. Write down the time and date. A report made immediately is usually more useful than a later estimate. If you saw the animal more than once, record each observation separately.
  5. Observe from a distance. Count the animals, note whether they were standing, running, crossing a road, trapped, injured, or behaving aggressively, and record the direction in which they moved.
  6. Call the wildlife information number or the appropriate alternative. If the sighting involves a suspected violation, use Operation Game Thief. If people or traffic are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or law enforcement first.

Information that makes a sighting report useful

Give the dispatcher or online form facts you actually observed. Separate direct observations from guesses about the species or a person’s intent.

Detail Useful example Why it matters
Location “Two miles north of the White Sands entrance, west side of the highway, beside a cattle fence” Lets responders identify the jurisdiction and reach the area
Date and time “October 17, 2026, about 7:20 a.m.” Allows staff to match the report with other calls and current animal movements
Number of animals “One adult-sized animal; no young seen” Helps distinguish a single escapee from a group
Physical description “Tall, tan body; long straight horns; dark markings on the face; shoulder height roughly level with a car hood” Supports identification without requiring a confident species label
Behavior “Walking along the shoulder, then entered scrub; not pursuing people” Indicates urgency and helps staff plan a response
Direction of travel “Moved south toward the drainage channel” Provides a search direction if the animal leaves the original spot
Condition “No visible injury” or “Dragging a rear leg” Alerts responders to possible animal welfare or traffic concerns
People, vehicles, or equipment “A pickup stopped nearby; I saw no attempt to pursue the animal” Important when a wildlife violation may have occurred

Use plain landmarks if you do not have coordinates. A road number, trail name, mile marker, gate, ranch, park boundary, or nearby community can be more useful than an uncertain GPS reading.

How to use the Operation Game Thief form

Use the online Operation Game Thief form when you believe the sighting may involve a wildlife violation or when an online report is more practical than a call. The form permits anonymous submissions. An anonymous report can still be useful, but leaving a safe callback method may allow investigators to clarify the location or sequence of events.

  1. Choose the wildlife-violation reporting form. Do not use a hunting-harvest report for a public sighting.
  2. Identify the species as specifically as you can. If you are unsure, write “unidentified large antelope-like animal” and provide the physical description instead of selecting a species you cannot support.
  3. Describe the animal. Include color, size, horn shape, markings, sex if apparent, and any distinctive features.
  4. Enter the location. Include the county or nearest community, road or trail, landmark, and direction from that landmark. Add coordinates only when they are reliable.
  5. Describe the incident. State what you saw, when it occurred, how long you observed it, and what people or vehicles did. Do not convert a suspicion into a fact; write “appeared to be” when you are uncertain.
  6. Submit and preserve your reference details. If the form provides a confirmation number or receipt, save it. Do not return to the site to collect evidence or confront anyone involved.

The cited form specifies species, description, location, and violation details. It does not state that a photograph is required, so do not delay a report because you have no image.

How to describe a possible oryx without over-identifying it

The strongest documented example of a non-native antelope in New Mexico is the African oryx, also called gemsbok (Oryx gazella). The National Park Service says that 95 oryx were released at White Sands Missile Range and nearby areas between 1969 and 1977. That release history explains why an antelope-like animal in southern New Mexico may be an established introduced species rather than a recent escape.

The figure of 95 is a historical release total reported by the National Park Service, whose webpage was accessed in 2026. It is not a current statewide population estimate, and it does not establish how many animals are present at a particular site today.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Do not call every large introduced hoofed animal an antelope. The National Park Service also identifies introduced ibex in the Florida Mountains near Deming and Barbary sheep near Picacho. Those are non-native ungulates, but they are not antelope.

Features worth reporting

  • Overall size compared with a known object such as a vehicle, fence, or horse
  • Body color and any dark or white facial, leg, or flank markings
  • Horn length, curvature, and whether the horns appear on one or both animals in a group
  • Tail, mane, shoulder shape, and hoof appearance when visible
  • Whether the animal resembles an oryx, ibex, sheep, deer, or livestock, while making clear that the comparison is tentative

A good report might say, “The animal looked like a tan oryx-type antelope with long straight horns,” followed by the observable details. That is more useful than presenting an uncertain identification as definite.

Photographs, video, and evidence

Take a photograph or short video only if you can do it without approaching, stopping dangerously, leaving a secure vehicle, or distracting yourself while driving. A distant, blurry image is still optional; the location, time, and description remain important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the original file if possible, because its date and time metadata may help establish when it was taken.
  • Do not edit the image in a way that removes the original context. If you crop or mark a copy, keep the unedited original.
  • Tell the agency where and when the image was made and whether it shows the whole scene or only the animal.
  • Do not post a precise location publicly if doing so could attract crowds, motorists, or people who might try to capture the animal.

The available state guidance does not require a photo and does not promise a particular file-upload method. Ask the receiving agency how it wants an image delivered rather than sending sensitive information to an unrelated address.

When the animal is near a road, home, or people

Treat a road-side sighting as a traffic problem first. Pull completely off the roadway if you are driving, turn on hazard lights if appropriate, and do not stop in a travel lane to watch or photograph the animal. Tell law enforcement or emergency dispatch if the animal is crossing lanes, causing vehicles to brake, or trapped against a barrier.

If the animal is on private property, remain outside the property unless you have permission. Do not open gates, cut fences, or ask neighbors to move it. Tell the wildlife agency or law enforcement about the property boundary and the safest access point.

If the animal appears injured, state exactly what you can see: bleeding, limping, entanglement, inability to stand, or a collision. Avoid labeling it “abandoned” or “dangerous” unless you observed conduct that supports those words.

Land ownership and jurisdiction

The published state instruction does not provide a separate reporting procedure for federal or tribal lands. Start with the state wildlife contact or the listed law-enforcement option, then follow the posted rules of the land manager. Tell the agency whether the sighting occurred on a state area, federal installation, tribal land, private property, a public road, or an unknown boundary.

Jurisdiction can affect which officers respond and who may enter the site. It does not change the value of the basic information: exact location, time, description, behavior, and direction of travel.

Do not use a harvest-reporting page for this

New Mexico’s harvest-reporting page is for people who hold listed hunting or trapping licenses and must report harvest information. It is not the ordinary public route for reporting an animal seen in the wild. A person who merely observed a possible oryx or another unusual ungulate should use the wildlife information contact or Operation Game Thief, depending on whether a wildlife violation is suspected.

What happens after you report

The official material reviewed does not establish a dedicated current portal just for non-native antelope sightings, a guaranteed response time, or a species-specific field protocol. Staff may ask follow-up questions, route the report to another jurisdiction, or decide that no immediate field response is needed.

Do not interpret a lack of an immediate callback as proof that the report was ignored. If the animal remains an immediate danger, call emergency services or law enforcement again and explain that conditions have changed. For a non-emergency update, provide the original location and the time of your first report so staff can connect the information.

A short script for a phone report

You can organize a call in this order:

  1. “I am reporting an unusual animal that may be a non-native antelope.”
  2. Give the exact location and the nearest road, trail, landmark, or mile marker.
  3. State the date and time, number of animals, and direction of travel.
  4. Describe size, color, horns, markings, behavior, and condition.
  5. Explain whether anyone is in immediate danger or whether you suspect a wildlife violation.
  6. Say whether you have a photograph or video and whether you can safely provide it.

For example: “At about 7:20 this morning I saw one tan, long-horned animal beside the west side of the highway, two miles north of the White Sands entrance. It walked south into scrub. It did not approach people, but it was close to traffic. I could not safely take a photograph.”

Quick checklist

  • Safety comes before identification or photography.
  • Call the Department of Game and Fish wildlife information contact for an unusual sighting.
  • Use Operation Game Thief for a suspected wildlife violation; its form allows anonymous reports.
  • Use local emergency services or law enforcement when people or traffic face an immediate danger.
  • Record location, date, time, count, description, behavior, condition, and direction of travel.
  • Describe the animal instead of claiming a species you cannot confirm.
  • Remember that oryx are documented in southern New Mexico, while ibex and Barbary sheep are different non-native ungulates.
  • Keep a public sighting separate from hunting or trapping harvest reporting.
