They handle separate parts of the process: notifying the bank does not itself end the pension, and reporting the death does not establish whether a deposit already made is payable to the estate or a survivor.
The rules depend on the country and pension scheme. In particular, U.S. Social Security and Canada’s CPP/OAS treat the payment for the month of death differently. Use the examples below only for those programs; for any other pension, follow its administrator’s instructions.

What to do first
- Identify each pension. Find the country, scheme, and administering authority for every payment the deceased received. A person may have more than one pension. One report may not cover Social Security, a military or public-service pension, and an occupational pension.
- Report the death to each relevant authority. Ask how to complete the report, what information or documents it needs, and how it will handle any deposit issued after death. Follow the authority’s instructions for its specific scheme.
- Notify the bank receiving deposits. Tell it that the account holder has died and ask how it will handle pension credits received after death. Also ask the pension authority directly; bank notification alone does not stop the pension or determine entitlement.
- Leave unclear payments untouched. Do not spend or move a deposit until the authority and bank clarify whether it is due and what to do with it. Keep notes of calls, dates, case references, letters, and any repayment.
- Ask about survivor payments separately. Reporting a death and stopping the deceased person’s pension are not the same as applying for a survivor pension or death benefit. Ask the relevant authority whether anyone may qualify and how to claim.
United States: Social Security
Report the death to SSA
USAGov’s Social Security death guidance says a funeral director can report the death if given the deceased person’s Social Security number. Otherwise, the family can contact a local Social Security office by phone or in person. SSA does not accept death reports online or by email. A family member reporting directly can begin without a death certificate, but will need one later to complete the report.
Ask the bank to return payments that are not due
USAGov states that Social Security cannot pay benefits for the month of the recipient’s death. For example, if the person dies in July, a payment received in August for July must be returned. For direct deposits, USAGov advises notifying the financial institution as soon as possible and asking it to return the payment for the month of death and any later deposits. Contact SSA as well for instructions about the case and any payment received.

Report other U.S. federal pensions separately
Social Security is not the reporting route for every federal pension. USAGov’s after-death checklist directs families handling military retirement matters to DFAS and federal-retiree annuities to OPM, and includes banks and other financial organizations among the organizations to notify. Check the administrator for any private, state, local, or occupational pension as well.
Canada: CPP and OAS
Tell Service Canada
The Government of Canada’s CPP/OAS death guidance says to report the death to Service Canada. Be ready to provide details such as the deceased’s name, date of birth, date and place of death, marital status, SIN if known, and last address, along with contact information for the person reporting or the estate. Proof of death is not needed unless requested. If the deceased received Quebec Pension Plan benefits, contact Retraite Québec too.

Understand the month-of-death rule
For CPP and OAS, the Government of Canada says the estate is entitled to payments for the month of death; payments issued after that month must be returned. For direct deposit, ask the bank to return deposits made after the date of death to the originator, or ask the responsible office how to repay by cheque. Do not apply the U.S. Social Security rule to CPP/OAS: the payable month differs.

Do not assume that every deposit made after death belongs to the estate—or that every one must be returned. The relevant payment period and repayment process depend on the scheme. Ask both the pension administrator and the bank whether the deposit is due, who should return it, and how to do so. The U.K. Department for Work and Pensions’ staff guidance on direct payments after death describes recovery where a payment reaches an account before a death report arrives, including recovery from the bank or the deceased’s representative or next of kin. It says a bank or building society that knows a sole-account holder has died would normally return credits received after that date. This is staff recovery guidance, not a substitute for instructions from the particular pension administrator.

What information to have ready
Requirements vary, so ask the authority what it needs rather than assuming one document or reporting route applies everywhere. Commonly useful details include:
- The deceased’s full name and date of birth.
- The date and place of death, and any requested death documentation.
- A pension, Social Security, or other scheme identification number, if known.
- The reporter’s contact information and, where relevant, the estate representative’s details.
- Information about the bank account receiving the pension deposit, if the authority or bank asks for it.
Canada’s CPP/OAS guidance lists several of these details and says proof of death is provided only if requested. For U.S. Social Security, a family member can start a direct report without a death certificate, but it will be needed later to complete the report. Other schemes may set different requirements.
