How to Report a Misleading Viral Video on Social Media

Open the video’s own menu, choose the closest reporting category, and explain the specific claim or missing context that concerns you. A report asks the platform to review a post; it does not guarantee removal. Before sharing or correcting the clip, check the claim against its original source or reliable fact-checking work.

Before you report: pause and identify the claim

A clip can be old, edited, or shared without context. Its images may not establish the claim attached to them. TikTok’s misinformation guide recommends checking whether the person, video, or audio is what it appears to be, whether relevant context is missing, and whether evidence leads back to an original source (TikTok’s misinformation guide, June 3, 2025).

Keep the post link, account name, date you saw it, and the exact statement or segment you think is misleading. This is practical preparation, not a universal platform-mandated evidence checklist. Describe what you can substantiate: avoid alleging that the poster knowingly deceived people unless you have evidence of intent.

How to report the video

  1. Open the specific video. Use its More or menu control, or the platform’s report control. If the video itself is the problem, report that item rather than only the account.
  2. Select the closest available reason. Choose the policy category that best describes the concern. A disagreement or an unverified suspicion by itself does not establish that a post violates a platform’s rules.
  3. Give precise details. State the claim, identify where it appears, explain what context may be missing, and include a reliable source relevant to the claim if you have one. On YouTube Shorts, the report form can accept added details such as timestamps or descriptions.
  4. Submit and check status if the service offers it. Keep any confirmation or report record available in case you want to check the outcome.

Platform-specific reporting options

Platform Where and what to report Details and status What the policy or outcome means
YouTube Sign in, open the video, choose More, then Report, select the best-fitting reason, and submit. Report a specific video; a channel report does not prompt review of every video on that channel. For a Short, report from its player and add a timestamp or description where useful. Reporting is anonymous. Reporting History lets you check reports. Reports are reviewed against YouTube’s guidelines and are not automatic takedowns. Content stays up if reviewers find no violation. YouTube’s misinformation policy covers certain misleading or deceptive content posing a serious risk of egregious harm, with possible exceptions for educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic context. TikTok Use the video’s reporting control and choose the closest relevant reason. TikTok asks users to report misinformation that may break its rules. Report outcomes can be tracked under Report Records in Safety Center. TikTok’s guide also suggests checking source and context clues when assessing authenticity. TikTok prohibits misinformation that may cause significant harm; some misinformation that may cause moderate harm can be ineligible for the For You feed. Its Integrity and Authenticity policy was released April 17, 2024, and took effect May 17, 2024. Check the live policy for current rules. Facebook Use the report control on the content and select the closest Community Standards reason. Report updates appear in Support Inbox. For some types of reports, Facebook provides an option to request another review. Facebook says it acts when reported content is found to violate Community Standards and notifies the reporter of the decision. Facebook Help Center: report outcomes.

Interface labels and status features can vary by region, account, and product version. For Instagram, X, and WhatsApp, current platform-owned step-by-step instructions are not established here; consult the service’s own help or in-app reporting controls rather than relying on potentially dated directions. The World Health Organization’s cross-platform page was created in a COVID-19-era context and is not a reliable confirmation of current menu wording: WHO: reporting misinformation online.

What to expect after submitting a report

Reporting requests a review; it does not itself prove a violation or remove the video. YouTube states, “When content is reported, it’s not automatically taken down.” Its reviewers assess reports against platform guidelines, and YouTube says that no volume of reports changes an outcome if reviewers do not find a violation. Facebook likewise says its action depends on whether content violates Community Standards; it provides a decision notice and another-review option for some report types.

Platforms apply different standards, so a report’s outcome on one service does not predict what another will do. YouTube’s misinformation rules focus on specified misleading or deceptive content with serious risk of egregious harm. TikTok’s policy distinguishes misinformation that may cause significant harm from some moderate-harm misinformation that may be excluded from the For You feed. Neither a prediction of removal nor a promised response time is warranted.

Check the claim separately from reporting

A platform decision addresses its own rules, not necessarily whether a claim is true. Search the exact claim or a short excerpt, look for the original source, and compare it with reputable fact-checking work or relevant experts. FactCheck.org recommends using search engines and searches of fact-checking sites, and consulting experts when uncertainty remains (FactCheck.org, April 2025). Avoid reposting the clip as a warning if doing so would amplify the claim you are trying to check.
