Open the ad’s reporting menu, choose Report ad, select the closest reason, and submit the requested details. If the ad has disappeared, use Your recent ads in My Ad Center, the Ads Transparency Center, or Google’s Report an ad form. For suspected fraud in the United States, also file a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
“Sponsored” means the placement was paid for; it does not, by itself, mean the advertiser broke a law. Your complaint should identify what the ad said or where it sent you, and explain why that content or destination is deceptive, unsafe, or otherwise problematic.
What counts as a misleading sponsored result?
Google Search ads are paid placements that appear on Google Search results pages. Google can also serve ads on other websites and apps, so first establish where you saw the promotion. The reporting path is different from complaining about an ordinary, unpaid search result. An unpaid result may have its own search-quality or website complaint process; the instructions here concern a paid Google ad.
A sponsored result may be misleading because its headline, description, price, affiliation, offer terms, or destination creates a false impression. Examples include an ad that appears to represent a bank or government office, promises a benefit that the landing page does not provide, displays a low price while hiding material conditions, or directs you to an unexpected payment intermediary. An ad can also create confusion by using a business name, logo, or web address that suggests an affiliation that is not apparent from the destination. Irrelevance alone is not proof of a policy or legal violation, although you can still report an ad that violates Google’s rules.
Whether an advertisement is legally deceptive depends on the whole context. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes a misleading representation or omission as one likely to mislead a reasonable consumer in a material way. That assessment considers what the ad communicates as a whole, not just one isolated word. It is separate from Google’s internal policy review: Google may decide that an ad breaches its rules even when you cannot establish a legal violation, and a legal complaint may require information that is different from a routine policy report.

Do not assume that every exaggerated, irrelevant, or disappointing ad is illegal. Focus on the concrete statement, missing condition, impersonation, unsafe instruction, or destination mismatch that a reviewer can check.
Before you report: preserve the ad safely
Ads can change or disappear, so capture enough information for a reviewer to locate the exact placement. Do this without entering payment details, downloading files, or signing in through a suspicious page. If the page pressures you to act immediately, close it and document what you already saw rather than returning to collect more information.

- Search query: the words you entered, including spelling and punctuation. The query helps explain why the ad appeared and distinguishes it from other ads by the same advertiser.
- Date and time: include your time zone if you know it. An approximate time is still useful when an ad ran only briefly.
- Advertiser: the name shown in the ad and any business name on the landing page. Record capitalization and punctuation accurately.
- Exact claim: copy the headline, description, price, discount, guarantee, deadline, or urgency language. Preserve qualifying text instead of recording only the most alarming phrase.
- Displayed URL: the web address shown in the ad. This may differ from the address that opened after you selected the result.
- Destination URL: if you opened it safely, record the address you actually reached. Do not revisit a risky page merely to obtain it, and do not test a suspected phishing page with real credentials.
- Context: note labels such as “Sponsored,” the ad’s position, device or browser if relevant, and what happened after you selected it. Describe a redirect, payment request, login prompt, download, or unexpected intermediary.
- Screenshot: save the ad and, when practical, the landing page. Keep the original image rather than editing out details. If the screenshot includes unrelated personal information, make a separate copy with that information obscured for sharing.
Google’s form allows additional information. These fields are a practical evidence checklist, not a claim that every item is mandatory. A concise, accurate account is better than a long narrative containing guesses. Do not include passwords, full payment-card numbers, government identification numbers, one-time codes, or other unnecessary sensitive data.
If you already paid or disclosed information, preserve receipts, emails, transaction references, and the exact web address separately. Those records may be useful for your bank, the organization being impersonated, or a consumer-protection agency, but they are not a reason to keep interacting with the suspicious advertiser.
Report an ad while it is still visible
- Confirm the platform. Make sure the promotion is on a Google Search results page. A Google-served ad on another site or app may have a different reporting control. Note where you saw it before choosing a category.
- Open the ad’s reporting control. Select the information or options control associated with the sponsored result. Interface labels and placement can change by device, account, and region, so look for the control attached to that particular ad rather than a general browser menu.
- Choose Report ad. This starts Google’s ad-reporting flow rather than a general search-quality complaint.
- Select the closest reason. Choose the category that best describes the problem, such as scam or phishing, offensive content, dangerous content, or another policy concern. If more than one issue exists, lead with the clearest and most consequential one.
- Complete the form. Add the preserved wording, URLs, dates, and a concise explanation of what a reasonable user would misunderstand or what made the destination unsafe. Explain the mismatch between the promise and the actual offer, rather than relying only on labels such as “fake.”
- Submit and save the confirmation. Google says it sends an email confirmation after submission. Keep that message with your screenshot and notes. Check that the email address used for the report is one you can access, but do not click links in unrelated follow-up messages claiming to represent Google.
Describe observable facts instead of guessing at the advertiser’s intent. “The ad says the service is free, but the landing page requires a paid subscription before showing the quoted feature” is more useful than simply calling the advertiser a scam. If you are uncertain, say what you observed and identify the point that needs review.
Other Google reporting routes
Use one of these routes when the ad is no longer on your screen or when you need to identify the advertiser first. Availability and interface wording can change, so follow the current controls Google displays.

| The ad’s Report ad control | The sponsored result is visible now. | Open the ad menu, select Report ad, choose a reason, and submit details. | The exact wording, displayed URL, and a screenshot if safe. |
| Your recent ads in My Ad Center | You saw the ad recently but closed or refreshed the results page. | Open My Ad Center, find Your recent ads, select the relevant ad, and use its reporting option. | The approximate time, advertiser name, and query that led to it. |
| Ads Transparency Center | You can identify the advertiser or website and want to locate its ads. | Search for the advertiser or website, open the matching ad, and choose Report this ad. | The advertiser or website exactly as displayed, plus the claim you saw. |
| Google’s Report an ad form | The ad is unavailable through the page or account controls. | Submit the identifying details and explanation requested by Google’s form. | Any accurate identifiers you preserved; do not invent a URL you cannot verify. |
These Google routes are complementary. Google’s guidance does not promise that filing through several channels changes the review result, so avoid sending duplicate reports unless a separate incident or new evidence is involved. If you use a second route because the first was unavailable, explain that it concerns the same ad and include the original confirmation details when the form permits.
The Ads Transparency Center is especially useful when you know the advertiser or website but cannot reproduce the search result. It is not a substitute for preserving the original context: tell Google what query, wording, and destination you encountered, even if you located a related ad later.

Choose the correct type of complaint
Google policy complaint
Use the policy route when the advertisement itself appears to violate Google’s advertising rules. The form’s examples include scam or phishing behavior, offensive material, and dangerous content. Explain the specific policy-related conduct and attach the ad’s wording or screenshot. Mention a redirect, request for credentials, deceptive affiliation, or dangerous instruction when one occurred.
Legal-violation report
Choose the legal-violation path when you are asking for removal under a law, such as copyright, trademark, or counterfeit rules. State what legal right or protected material is involved and identify the exact ad or destination. A general statement that an ad is “illegal” is not enough to explain which legal process applies. If you own or represent the affected rights, identify that relationship and provide only the documentation the form requests.
Misleading but not clearly illegal
An ad can be confusing, exaggerated, or poorly matched to its landing page without your having enough information to classify it as unlawful. Report the factual mismatch through Google’s policy channel, describe the consumer harm clearly, and avoid asserting a legal conclusion you cannot support. You can state that a condition was not visible, that the destination contradicted the headline, or that the ad appeared to impersonate an organization, while leaving the formal determination to the relevant reviewer.
Keeping these routes separate improves clarity. A policy report asks Google to assess its advertising rules; a legal-violation report identifies a legal basis for removal. A U.S. fraud report to the FTC serves a different purpose again and does not replace the Google submission.
When the ad looks like fraud or impersonation
Stop before sharing credentials, payment information, one-time codes, identity documents, or remote access. Close the page if it pressures you to act immediately, claims to be a bank or government office, or routes payment through an unexpected intermediary. Do not call a number supplied only by the suspicious ad to “confirm” that it is real.
Verify the business independently
Do not use the suspicious ad’s phone number, email address, or “support” link to verify it. Type the organization’s known web address yourself, use a bookmark you already trust, or check contact details through an unpaid search result. Compare the legitimate organization’s domain, phone number, and payment instructions with what the ad supplied. A similar-looking domain or a familiar logo is not independent verification.

File the U.S. consumer complaint
For suspected fraud in the United States, submit the conduct to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the advertiser, the wording of the ad, the destination, what information or money was requested, and the date. The FTC’s June 2025 consumer advice tells people who see a misleading ad to use that site. The FTC says its advertising work prioritizes matters within its jurisdiction and the public interest; it does not promise an individual investigation or a personal resolution.
The FTC route described here is U.S.-specific. Readers elsewhere should use the consumer-protection or advertising regulator in their own country. A local agency may be better placed to handle a local dispute or an individual transaction, while Google’s report remains useful for the ad’s platform conduct. If money was taken, contact the relevant financial institution through a known number as soon as possible; do not wait for an advertising review to address an urgent payment issue.
What happens after you submit a Google report?
Google says: “Once submitted, you will receive an email confirmation. Google will then review your report and, if necessary, take appropriate action on the ad.” That statement confirms receipt and a review process, not a guaranteed removal.
- Google does not state a standard review deadline in the cited instructions.
- Google does not guarantee that an ad will be removed, that an individual investigation will occur, or that you will receive a detailed explanation of the outcome.
- An ad may change, stop running, or be replaced before the review is complete.
- A report can still help Google identify a recurring policy issue when the ad later reappears under a different wording or URL.
Keep your confirmation email and evidence until the issue is resolved. If you later discover a new destination, a different advertiser name, or a separate payment attempt, treat it as new evidence and report the new incident rather than altering the original facts. Do not promise another person that Google will remove the ad or refund money; neither outcome is stated in the reporting instructions.

Troubleshooting common reporting problems
The Report ad control is missing
Check that you are looking at a sponsored placement on Google Search, not an unpaid result or an ad embedded in another app. Try the ad again on the same account and device, then use My Ad Center’s Your recent ads, the Ads Transparency Center, or the Report an ad form. If the placement has already ended, use the details you recorded rather than repeatedly refreshing a potentially unsafe destination.
The ad disappeared before you captured it
Write down the query, approximate time, advertiser name, claim, and any part of the displayed URL you remember. Search the Ads Transparency Center by advertiser or website. A report with partial but accurate identifiers is preferable to inventing a URL or revisiting a dangerous page. Explain which details are approximate so Google can distinguish memory from a verbatim quotation.
You are unsure whether the destination is genuine
Do not test the site with real credentials or payment data. Compare its domain and contact details with the organization’s independently verified website, then report the ad and any suspected fraud. If you downloaded a file or entered credentials, change the affected password from a trusted device and contact the relevant financial institution through its known number. Record the event for your own records without uploading unnecessary identity or account information to the ad form.

The form asks for a category you do not understand
Use the policy category when the complaint concerns scam, phishing, dangerous content, or another Google advertising-rule issue. Use the legal-violation category when you are specifically requesting action for copyright, trademark, counterfeit, or another legal right. In the explanation, state the conduct first and the legal basis second. If you do not know the legal category, describe the facts accurately instead of selecting a legal claim merely because the ad was frustrating.
You received no immediate outcome
Google’s confirmation acknowledges submission but gives no promised response time. Do not assume that silence means approval or rejection. Preserve the evidence, monitor for a repeat ad, and submit a separate report if materially new conduct appears. A lack of an immediate reply is not evidence that the advertiser was cleared.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A concise report that reviewers can use
Write in a factual sequence:
- “I searched for [query] on [date and time, time zone].”
- “The sponsored ad identified itself as [advertiser] and stated: [exact wording].”
- “It displayed [URL] and led to [destination, if safely observed].”
- “The problem is [specific mismatch, impersonation, omitted condition, phishing request, or dangerous instruction].”
- “A user could be misled because [material consequence].”
- “I have attached [screenshot or other evidence].”
Replace the bracketed descriptions with your own facts; do not include private information that is not needed to identify the ad. If you are reporting an omitted condition, quote the visible promise and then identify the condition you found on the destination. If you are reporting impersonation, name the organization that appears to be represented and explain how the ad differed from its independently verified contact details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I report an ad if I am not sure it is illegal?
Yes. Use Google’s policy-reporting route and describe the exact claim, omission, destination, or unsafe behavior. You do not need to make a legal finding. Avoid calling the ad illegal unless you can identify the legal basis.
What if the ad is no longer visible?
Check Your recent ads in My Ad Center, search the Ads Transparency Center by advertiser or website, or use Google’s Report an ad form. Supply the query, approximate time, advertiser, wording, and any URL details you preserved.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does Google guarantee that a reported ad will be removed?
No. Google says it confirms receipt, reviews the report, and takes appropriate action if necessary. Its instructions do not promise a review deadline, removal, an individual investigation, or a detailed outcome.
Best Value
Should I submit the same complaint through every Google channel?
The channels are complementary, but Google does not say that multiple submissions change the result. Use another route when the first is unavailable or when you have a separate incident or materially new evidence.
What information should I avoid putting in the form?
Do not provide passwords, full card numbers, one-time codes, government identification numbers, or other sensitive information that is not needed to identify the ad. Record financial or account details separately for your bank or the appropriate authority.
Where should a U.S. consumer report suspected fraud?
Use Google’s ad-reporting route and submit a consumer complaint at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Verify the business through its known official website rather than contact information supplied by the suspicious ad.
What should readers outside the United States do?
Report the ad to Google, then use the consumer-protection or advertising regulator in your own country. The FTC route described here is U.S.-specific, and a local agency may be better placed to address a local transaction or dispute.
Is a low-quality or irrelevant ad automatically misleading?
No. Irrelevance or disappointment alone does not establish a policy or legal violation. Identify a specific false impression, material omission, impersonation, unsafe instruction, or mismatch between the ad and its destination.
Quick Recap
The Bottom Line
Capture the sponsored result safely, report it through the ad’s Report ad control or another Google route, and explain the exact claim or destination problem. Choose Google’s policy path for advertising-rule concerns and its legal-violation path for copyright, trademark, counterfeit, or similar rights. Google confirms receipt and reviews reports but promises no deadline or particular outcome. If the ad appears to be U.S. fraud, verify the business independently and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
