Report the specific video from the platform’s own post menu, choose the closest truthful category—such as election misinformation, manipulated media, synthetic media, voter interference, impersonation, or threats—and explain exactly what appears false and how it could harm voters. Include the direct post URL, account name, date and time, and a short description of the deceptive feature. A report asks the service to review the content; it does not guarantee removal. AI generation by itself may not violate a platform’s rules.
Do not repost the clip to criticize it. UK election-security guidance warns: “Think before you respond to any reports of disinformation. This may inadvertently amplify the suspected disinformation and could make the matter worse.”

Start with the exact post, not a general complaint
Open the video where you saw it and use that post’s reporting control. A repost on another service is a separate item and needs its own report. Reporting an account without identifying the individual video may make it harder for reviewers to find the material at issue.
Use the most accurate category the service offers. Depending on the video, that could be election or civic misinformation, manipulated or synthetic media, voter interference, impersonation, harassment, violence, or a threat. If the clip merely appears to be AI-made but does not deceive viewers or create a policy-defined harm, an AI label or no enforcement action may be appropriate.

- Describe the specific words, scene, voice, or caption that appears altered or false.
- Explain the civic consequence: false voting instructions, a fabricated candidate statement, impersonation of an election authority, intimidation, or suppression.
- State what you can verify and what remains uncertain. Say “apparently manipulated” or “suspected synthetic media” when provenance is not established.
- Do not guess who created the video or assert criminal intent without evidence.
Check the claim before you label it a deepfake
An unusual mouth movement, audio artifact, or low-quality upload is not proof of generative AI. First identify the exact claim and look for reliable context:
- Find the earliest or full-length version available. Cropped clips can remove a qualification or change the meaning of a speech.
- Compare the statement with an official candidate channel, a complete event recording, or a reputable transcript.
- Check authoritative election information if the clip gives instructions about registration, eligibility, polling hours, locations, ballot methods, or results.
- Look for independent reporting or a correction from the person shown. Treat automated “AI detectors” as clues, not conclusive proof.
You do not need to prove the production method to report a harmful falsehood. Report what the video claims, what evidence conflicts with it, and the risk to a civic process. Conversely, do not call authentic footage synthetic simply because it is edited, dubbed, old, or presented without context.
Record enough information for a reviewer
Before the post changes or disappears, copy the direct link or post identifier and note the account handle, caption, date and time you saw it, and the exact false assertion. A screenshot can help document the page, but take one only when lawful and safe. Avoid downloading, forwarding, or reposting the clip when doing so would increase exposure or infringe someone’s rights.

Use this reporting workflow
- Open the video’s current report menu. Select the post or video menu supplied by the service and choose Report. Menu names and locations can change with app version, language, geography, and content type, so follow the wording currently shown on your screen.
- Choose the closest policy reason. Prefer a specific election, civic-integrity, manipulated-media, deepfake, voter-interference, impersonation, threat, or harassment option over a generic complaint. If no exact option exists, choose the nearest accurate category and explain the distinction in the text field.
- Describe the deception and harm. Identify the statement or action that is false or altered, the evidence supporting that assessment, and the likely effect on voters or another public process. Separate verified facts from your suspicions.
- Submit the direct link and notes. Paste the URL or identifier and include the account handle and time seen if the form allows them. Do not add unrelated accusations about the uploader.
- Save the confirmation. Keep a report number, confirmation screen, or screenshot of the submitted details when the service provides one. Some services expose status or an additional-review option.
- Escalate when the situation warrants it. Candidates, campaigns, and election officials may have official contacts beyond the platform. Suspected crimes should go to local police, and an immediate threat requires the local emergency service.
How major platforms describe these reports
| Platform | Relevant policy distinction | What to do in the current interface | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | YouTube prohibits election misinformation that suppresses voting, falsely claims a candidate is ineligible, or encourages interference with democratic processes. It also prohibits technically manipulated or doctored material that misleads viewers and creates a serious risk of egregious harm; a fabricated clip showing a candidate withdrawing is an example. Educational, documentary, scientific, artistic, and public-interest context can affect enforcement. | Report the individual video through its report control and describe both the manipulated feature and the election harm. The rule concerns deception and serious risk, not AI creation alone. | YouTube elections misinformation policies |
| Facebook, Instagram, and Threads | Meta says it applies “Made with AI” labels when it detects industry-shared indicators or a user discloses AI creation. It keeps content that does not violate another rule, while voter interference, harassment, violence, or other violations can trigger enforcement. A fact-checker rating of “False” or “Altered” can reduce distribution and add an information overlay. | Report the specific post using its current menu. On Facebook, a report can be checked in Support Inbox and, in some cases, a decision not to remove content can be sent for another review. | Meta’s labeling approach and Facebook report status and review help |
| TikTok | TikTok requires creators to disclose realistic-looking AI-generated or significantly edited content. Unlabeled material may be removed, restricted, or labeled depending on potential harm. Even labeled content is prohibited when it misleads on a matter of public importance or harms people. Election rules cover false voting procedures, eligibility, candidate qualifications, results, interference, and intimidation. | Use the video’s Report option and follow the current misinformation, deepfake, edited-media, or AI-generated-content choices. A stable tap-by-tap path could not be confirmed because TikTok’s help page redirected during review, so rely on the menu presently displayed in your app. | TikTok Community Guidelines: Integrity and Authenticity and TikTok AI-generated-content support |
| X | X’s civic-integrity rules cover false information that could affect participation in elections or other civic processes, including incorrect information about how, when, or where to participate, suppression, and intimidation. | Use the post or media reporting flow. X says a report does not automatically suspend an account; the material is reviewed against the rules. | X civic-integrity policy, X report-violations help, and X report-a-post help |
Write a report that a human reviewer can act on
A concise, evidence-based explanation is more useful than an angry or speculative paragraph. Put the verifiable claim first, then the conflict and the risk. For example:
This video appears to show Candidate A saying that polling places are closed on 4 November. The full event recording and the local election authority’s notice show that the statement was not made and that polls are open. The clip uses a synthetic voice and could discourage people from voting. Please review it under election misinformation and manipulated media.
Adapt the wording to what you actually know. If you have not confirmed the production method, write “the voice and lip movement appear manipulated” rather than declaring that an AI model made it. If the problem is impersonation, say whom the account or video purports to represent. If it is a threat, identify the target and the threatening act without repeating sensational language unnecessarily.

Labels, disclosure, and takedowns are different outcomes
A platform may attach an AI or altered-media label without removing a post. Conversely, a post can be removed under election, harassment, violence, or impersonation rules even when no AI label appears. Disclosure rules ask whether synthetic or significantly edited media is identified; integrity rules ask whether the content deceives, causes likely harm, interferes with voting, or violates another standard.
Meta reported that 82% of respondents in a 2024 public-opinion survey favored warning labels for AI-generated content depicting people saying things they did not say. The survey included more than 23,000 respondents in 13 countries. That figure describes Meta’s survey finding, not detection accuracy, the prevalence of deepfakes, or the outcome for a particular post.

Common reporting mistakes to avoid
- Reporting only the account. Reviewers need the individual URL, especially when an account has many posts.
- Choosing a sensational category. Select violence or criminal conduct only when the content actually meets that description; inaccurate reports can slow review.
- Overstating certainty. Distinguish an unverified suspicion about AI from a demonstrably false voting instruction.
- Adding personal data. Do not include private phone numbers, addresses, children’s information, or unrelated identifying details in a report.
- Coordinating a pile-on. Do not direct followers to attack, mass-report, or contact the suspected creator.
- Assuming a label settles the issue. A label can coexist with harmful misinformation, while an unlabeled video is not automatically deceptive.
What to expect after submitting
Review can result in a label, reduced distribution, an information overlay, removal, account action, or no action. The decision depends on the service’s current rules, the available context, and the jurisdiction. Keep the confirmation or case reference and check the platform’s status area if one is offered. If a service provides another-review route, use it to add specific evidence rather than submitting repeated identical reports.
If the video is reposted elsewhere, report each materially identical post on the service hosting it. Do not quote-tweet, stitch, duet, or upload the clip merely to criticize it; those actions can expand its reach and make the false claim easier to encounter.

UK candidates and election officials
UK government guidance for electoral candidates and officials recommends reporting disinformation or generative-AI content to the platform and to the affected person’s political party. Independent candidates can contact platforms or police directly. Candidates may also notify their Returning Officer.

Election officials should report deepfakes and false information about election administration—such as who may vote, or when, where, or how to vote—to their local Returning Officer. Returning Officers should liaise with the Electoral Commission and the local police election contact. When content may constitute a criminal offence, the guidance says to report it to police as soon as possible. For immediate danger in the UK, call 999. These Returning Officer and 999 instructions are UK-specific.

People outside the UK
Use your country’s election authority, local law-enforcement channel, and emergency number. Election administration contacts, criminal definitions, evidence rules, and platform escalation options vary by jurisdiction. Do not assume that a UK Returning Officer exists in another country or that 999 is the correct emergency number.
When the content is urgent
Prioritize safety over documentation if the video contains a credible threat, publishes private information, directs people toward violence, or could cause immediate disruption at a polling place. Move away from danger, contact the local emergency service, and provide the post URL to police or election officials. Do not confront the suspected creator or organize a public pile-on.

Threats or doxxing: Do not save or circulate intimate images, addresses, or personal phone numbers. Report the post under the platform’s threat, privacy, or harassment route and give the URL directly to law enforcement when appropriate.
Minors and vulnerable people: Limit screenshots and redact names when sharing documentation with a third party. A platform report can be made without publicly identifying the person depicted.
Language and accessibility: If the video or caption is not in the platform’s primary language, provide a short, neutral translation and identify the original words. Use captions or a transcript rather than repeatedly uploading the clip.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA final pre-submission checklist
- Am I reporting the exact post or video where it is hosted?
- Have I separated a suspected AI technique from the verifiable false claim?
- Did I choose the closest current policy category?
- Did I include the URL, account, time seen, statement at issue, evidence, and civic harm?
- Have I avoided reposting or embedding the clip?
- Do I need a role-specific election contact, police report, or emergency response in my jurisdiction?
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to prove that a video was made with AI before reporting it?
No. Report the specific false statement, fabricated action, or harmful voting instruction and describe why it appears deceptive. If the production method is uncertain, use language such as “apparently manipulated” or “suspected synthetic media.” Platforms can apply misinformation, impersonation, harassment, or civic-integrity rules without a definitive finding about which software created the clip.
Best Value
Will reporting guarantee that the video is removed?
No. A report requests review. Depending on the platform’s rules and context, the result may be an AI label, fact-check overlay, reduced distribution, removal, an account action, or no action. Do not promise a response time. Keep the confirmation and use an available appeal or additional-review route if you can add relevant evidence.
Should I report the account or the individual video?
Report the individual video first, using its own menu and direct URL. Report the account as well when its broader conduct—such as repeated impersonation, threats, or coordinated voter suppression—is relevant. A profile-only report may not show reviewers which post contains the problem.
Is an AI label proof that the video violates election rules?
No. Meta, TikTok, and other services distinguish disclosure or labeling from harmful deception. A labeled video can remain online if it does not violate another rule, while an unlabeled video may be removed for voter interference, impersonation, violence, or serious manipulation. Describe the actual civic harm rather than relying on the presence or absence of a label.
Can I repost the clip with a warning so people know it is fake?
Avoid doing so unless there is a compelling public-interest reason and you can prevent further spread. UK election-security guidance warns that responding can inadvertently amplify suspected disinformation. Prefer a text description, a link to an authoritative correction, or a platform report. Do not quote, stitch, duet, or embed the deceptive media merely to criticize it.
What if the video gives false information about where or when to vote?
Treat it as a civic-integrity or election-misinformation problem. Verify the correct information through the official election authority, include that source in your report, and explain how the false instruction could suppress participation. Election officials should use their official escalation channel; ordinary users should also report the post on every service hosting a materially identical copy.
Where should a UK candidate or election official escalate a deepfake?
Report it to the platform and the affected person’s political party. Candidates may also contact their Returning Officer. Election officials should notify their local Returning Officer about deepfakes or false information on who may vote and when, where, or how to vote; Returning Officers can liaise with the Electoral Commission and local police election contact. Report possible crimes to police and call 999 for immediate danger.
What should people outside the UK do?
Use the election authority, law-enforcement channel, and emergency number for your own jurisdiction. Contacts, criminal definitions, evidence rules, and escalation procedures differ by country. Do not assume that a Returning Officer or the UK emergency number applies where you live.
