How to Report a Little Tern Sighting or Suspected Nesting Site in the UK

For a normal Little Tern sighting in the UK, enter the record in the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) BirdTrack portal or app. Include the date, time, place, number of birds and behaviour, and allow the record to be shared with your county bird recorder when appropriate. If the birds appear to be attempting to nest, do not approach, search for eggs or remain for photographs: move away, control dogs and tell the nearest warden, ranger or local recorder. A colour-ringed bird needs a separate report through ring.ac and [email protected].

Choose the right reporting route first

The route depends on what you saw and how quickly someone needs to act. A flying bird seen during an ordinary walk can be logged routinely. Repeated alarm calls, adults carrying food or birds settling in one spot may indicate breeding and deserve a precise, discreet record. A colour ring is handled by a specialist reporting route. Immediate danger, such as people or dogs entering a colony, should be reported to the site team or relevant authority without waiting for an online submission.

What you observed Primary action Urgency Location handling
Ordinary sighting, no breeding behaviour Submit a BTO BirdTrack record for Little Tern (Sternula albifrons) Routine Give the most accurate location you can; ordinary records can be shared with the county recorder if you permit it
Possible nest, colony or breeding behaviour Leave immediately, tell a warden or ranger, then submit the observation to BirdTrack and/or the local county recorder Prompt, especially if disturbance is occurring Keep the exact site discreet; sensitive breeding records are restricted from public maps
Colour-ringed bird Report through ring.ac and [email protected] As soon as practical while details are fresh Do not approach for a closer view or photograph
Suspected wildlife crime or active disturbance Record what happened from a safe distance and follow local police or wildlife-crime reporting advice Immediate if harm or disturbance is continuing Do not confront anyone or inspect a nest

Why a Little Tern record matters

Little Terns are small summer visitors that lay their eggs directly on coastal sand or shingle. Their nests, eggs and chicks blend into the substrate, so a person can be close to a nest without seeing it. A single accurate record helps establish where birds are using habitat; a record that includes behaviour can alert conservation staff to a previously unknown breeding site.

The species is under pressure. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reports a 39% decline since the 1980s and identifies disturbance, predation and habitat loss as major pressures on its 2026 project page. The same page gives an adult body weight of 40–60 g. The BTO’s current species account estimates 1,450 UK breeding pairs for 2013–17. These figures describe different measures and periods, so they should not be treated as a current annual population count.

Because colonies can be vulnerable to a single disturbance event, the quality of the report is more important than getting a close photograph. Date, place and behaviour recorded from a safe distance are usually more useful than an image obtained by walking into a roped area.

Protect the birds before you record anything

Little Terns are listed as Schedule 1 birds under the Wildlife and Countryside Act framework. The Little Tern Project warns that disturbing them during breeding, including for photography, is illegal without a formal licence. Follow every rope, sign and warden instruction, even when the beach appears empty.

  • Stay on marked paths and outside fenced or roped areas.
  • Keep at least 100 metres from roped areas and chicks where that is the RSPB advice for the site. A warden’s locally stated distance takes priority if it is greater or more specific.
  • Keep dogs under close control and away from the shoreline, shingle and marked colony areas. Do not allow a dog to run ahead to investigate calling birds.
  • Never enter a colony, walk toward an adult that is calling repeatedly, look for eggs or chicks, or sit nearby waiting for a photograph.
  • Do not publish a precise suspected nest or colony location on social media, in a public birding group or in a caption.
  • If you realise you are near birds showing alarm, quietly and directly retrace your route rather than stopping to watch.

The aim is to leave no trace of your observation. Adults may leave eggs exposed when people approach, and cryptically coloured eggs or chicks can be stepped on even when no nest is visible.

What to write down from a safe distance

Make notes as soon as you are clear of the birds. A record can be useful without a nest, provided the location and circumstances are reliable. Separate what you actually saw from what you infer.

Core details

  • Date and time: use the local date and time, including an approximate time if you did not check a watch.
  • Place: give the beach, reserve or access point name and the nearest recognisable feature. Add a grid reference or other precise location when you can obtain it without returning toward the birds.
  • Number of birds: record the largest number present together, and note whether you saw adults, juveniles or both if you are certain.
  • Direction and habitat: note the stretch of sand, shingle bank, dune edge or other habitat, plus the direction in which birds flew.
  • Behaviour: describe actions rather than assigning a breeding status yourself.

Behaviour that can indicate breeding

Useful observations include repeated alarm or agitation around one area, nest-building activity, adults carrying food, repeated landings at one spot, or a pair remaining associated with suitable nesting habitat. A bird simply flying past, feeding offshore or resting briefly is still worth recording, but it does not by itself establish breeding.

Write the behaviour exactly as observed. “Two birds repeatedly landed on the same shingle patch and one carried a small fish” is stronger and more transparent than entering “confirmed nest” when you did not see a nest. If you are unsure, mark the uncertainty in your notes and in the breeding-evidence field.

  • Your one-stop solution: these binoculars absolutely for bird watching, cruising, hiking, and traveling, but they’re not just for the outdoors—catch every thrilling moment at sporting events, concerts, plays, and more. Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.

Photographs and sound

Use a photograph or recording only if it can be made from your existing safe position. Do not move closer, cross a barrier, wait beside the birds or use playback to provoke a response. A distant, unidentifiable image can still help a recorder understand the setting, but it is not worth causing disturbance.

Submit an ordinary sighting in BTO BirdTrack

BirdTrack is the standard first route for an ordinary UK record. Entries can be passed to the appropriate county bird recorder when you give permission, allowing local experts to use the information without requiring you to find a separate contact for every observation.

  1. Open BirdTrack. Use the BTO BirdTrack portal or app and sign in to your account.
  2. Start a new observation. Select Little Tern, using the scientific name Sternula albifrons if the interface presents both names.
  3. Enter when and where. Add the date, time, beach or reserve, map position or grid reference and the number of birds. Use the most precise position you can provide without revisiting a sensitive area.
  4. Add behaviour and breeding evidence. Choose the evidence level that matches what you saw, then describe alarm, food carrying, nest building or repeated settling in the notes. Do not change a possible record to confirmed merely because the habitat looks suitable.
  5. Review the sensitivity setting. Enable sharing with the county recorder if you want the local recording network to receive it. Sensitive breeding locations are restricted from public maps while remaining available to authorised recorders.
  6. Submit and retain your notes. Keep the original wording, photographs and any map reference in case a recorder asks for clarification.

A routine BirdTrack entry is appropriate even when you saw only one bird and no sign of nesting. Accurate negative information—such as “single bird flying east, no alarm, no birds on beach”—helps recorders interpret what was and was not present at that time.

Report suspected nesting locally and discreetly

If a bird appears to be trying to nest, the Little Tern Project’s instruction is direct: “If you see a little tern trying to nest, don’t approach! Let a warden know where it is so we can help protect it.” The first notification should therefore go to the nearest beach warden, reserve ranger or site team, using contact details on local signs or at the reserve entrance.

When to contact someone immediately

  • You see repeated alarm, adults carrying food or repeated settling in one small area.
  • People, dogs, vehicles or recreational equipment are entering the area used by the birds.
  • A new group of birds is present on an unmarked stretch of beach and no protection is visible.
  • You suspect an injured bird, deliberate disturbance, egg collection or another wildlife offence.

Give the warden the access point, direction from a fixed landmark, approximate distance and the time of the observation. If you have already left, do not return to point out the site. The warden can decide how to approach and whether temporary protection or further monitoring is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact the county recorder as well

For a suspected new colony, a time-critical disturbance risk or an unusual record, contact the local county bird recorder directly as well as entering BirdTrack. Rare birds should also be sent directly to the local recorder. Use the county-recorder directory maintained by the BTO or the contact information supplied by the reserve; the site team may be able to forward the record if you cannot identify the correct recorder.

Understand breeding-evidence levels

BirdTrack and the Rare Breeding Birds Panel use graded evidence so that records distinguish possibility from confirmation. You do not need to decide the final category yourself; provide the observation and let the recorder evaluate it.

Observation What it can show How to enter it
A pair in suitable coastal habitat Possible use of the site; not proof of nesting Record the pair, habitat and duration of your observation
Nest-building behaviour Stronger indication that birds are preparing to breed Describe the material or action you saw without claiming a completed nest
Adults carrying food May indicate a nearby nest or chicks Note what was carried, direction of travel and repeated journeys if observed
Repeated alarm or agitation around one area Can indicate a nest or young nearby Give the location and duration; do not search for the source of the alarm
Adults repeatedly landing at one spot May identify a nest area even when the nest is invisible Describe the spot and frequency from a safe distance
Eggs, chicks or a nest seen accidentally Direct evidence, but approaching to verify can cause harm Leave immediately, report the location privately and explain that the view was incidental

Cryptic eggs and chicks make “I could not see a nest” a meaningful qualification, not a reason to omit the record. Never upgrade “possible” to “confirmed” because a form seems to require a stronger answer.

Report a colour-ringed Little Tern separately

Colour-ring projects depend on tiny details that ordinary sighting forms may not capture. Submit the observation through ring.ac and email [email protected].

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Write every ring colour and code that you can read.
  • State which leg carries each ring and note the order of rings if more than one is present.
  • Give the exact place or grid reference, date and time.
  • Include the bird’s behaviour and whether it was alone, paired or in a group.
  • Attach a photograph only if it was taken without approaching or disturbing the bird.
  • Say explicitly when a code or colour is uncertain rather than guessing a character.

A distant ring can be difficult to read, especially in bright light or heat haze. Several partial observations are preferable to one confident but incorrect code, so describe alternatives such as “the second character may be 3 or 8” in the email.

Handle suspected wildlife crime safely

Do not confront people, block their route or attempt to inspect a nest. From a safe position, note the time, place, number of people or dogs, vehicles, actions and direction of travel. Preserve any photograph or video that was made without moving closer, and follow the local police or wildlife-crime reporting advice for the area.

If disturbance is ongoing, alert the nearest warden or ranger first when one is available. A delayed online record is less useful than a prompt call that allows staff to protect birds immediately. Do not post accusations or the exact colony location publicly while an incident is being handled.

Keep sensitive locations out of public view

Breeding records need to be findable by authorised conservation staff but not by anyone looking for a nest. When BirdTrack asks about sharing, allow access for the county recorder if appropriate while accepting the restriction of sensitive records from public maps. In public descriptions, use the beach or reserve name rather than a pinpoint, and remove map coordinates from social-media posts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Send exact directions only through the private route requested by the warden, recorder or project. If a website or app offers a public comment field, do not paste a grid reference there. This protects birds from photographers, curious visitors, egg collectors and accidental trampling.

Common situations and the right response

You saw one Little Tern flying along the shore

Stay where you are, note the time and direction, and enter a normal BirdTrack record. Add the number of birds and any feeding or calling you observed. There is no reason to search the beach for a colony.

You saw two birds repeatedly landing on a shingle patch

Treat this as possible breeding evidence. Leave the area, keep the location private and tell a warden or ranger. Then submit the behaviour in BirdTrack and contact the county recorder if the site team advises it or if the location is new.

A dog ran toward calling birds

Move the dog away immediately and report the location to the site team. Record what happened from a safe distance; do not return to look for eggs or chicks. If the incident was deliberate or the disturbance continues, use the relevant wildlife-crime reporting route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You found a colour ring but cannot read the code

Do not approach for a closer photograph. Report the colours, leg, place, date and time, state which characters are unreadable and attach any distant image. The specialist team can sometimes match an incomplete observation with other records.

You are unsure whether the bird was a Little Tern

Do not force an identification. Enter only a record you can support, retain the photograph or notes, and ask the local recorder for guidance. If you are certain of the species but uncertain about breeding, record the species and describe the behaviour with the uncertainty stated.

You have no grid reference

Use the beach or reserve name, nearest access point, direction from a landmark and an approximate distance. An honest approximate location is more useful than a precise-looking coordinate obtained by guessing.

What happens after you report

BirdTrack data can be passed to the relevant county recorder when you grant permission. Recorders and site teams may combine your entry with other observations to decide whether protection, signage or monitoring is needed. A report does not guarantee that staff will reveal the outcome or publish the location; secrecy is part of protecting a vulnerable colony.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If someone contacts you for clarification, answer from your original notes and distinguish direct observation from interpretation. Do not revisit the site to verify a detail unless a warden specifically arranges a safe, lawful visit.

The practical rule

Record Little Terns, not nests. For an ordinary sighting, use BTO BirdTrack. For possible breeding, move away and tell a warden or local recorder promptly, then submit the behaviour discreetly. For a colour-ringed bird, use ring.ac and [email protected]. At every stage, the welfare rule is the same: distance, accurate notes and private reporting are more valuable than a close view.
