Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReport a scanner false positive through the project’s documented security channel, with enough redacted evidence for maintainers to reproduce the result. If the report could reveal an exploitable weakness, leaked secret, or dangerous security guidance, use a private route instead of a public issue. On GitHub, check the repository’s SECURITY.md or Security tab first; when enabled, Report a vulnerability provides a structured private submission path.
First decide what kind of report you have
A scanner alert can be wrong without the scanner being vulnerable. It can also expose a weakness in the scanner, its integrations, its update mechanism, or the guidance it gives users. Those cases need different handling, and the project—not the reporter—must make the final classification.

False positive: the finding does not apply
Use the false-positive path when the alert appears to describe a condition that is not present or cannot be reached in the stated setup. Common examples include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The package version named by the alert is not installed.
- The scanner matched a similarly named package or an incorrect ecosystem.
- The vulnerable code path is unreachable under the documented configuration.
- A lockfile, vendored copy, build target, or platform condition makes the advisory inapplicable.
- The rule misread a version constraint, generated file, comment, test fixture, or unrelated text as a vulnerable component.
These are examples to investigate, not conclusions to assert without evidence. Explain exactly why the result appears inaccurate and show the package, version, configuration, or code path that supports your explanation.

Potential scanner vulnerability or unsafe disclosure
Treat the matter as a potential vulnerability until maintainers triage it if the scanner itself can be exploited, exposes sensitive information, produces materially unsafe remediation advice, or causes downstream users to make a security decision from a dangerous result. A scanner that silently sends secrets to an unintended destination, accepts an attacker-controlled update, or recommends disabling a protection could create risk even when an individual detection is technically correct.
The Open Source Security Incident Response Team (OSS-SIRT) distinguishes an apparent security risk that has not yet been confirmed by the owner from a validated weakness that is exploitable against confidentiality, integrity, or availability. Use that distinction in your wording: say “potential vulnerability” or “suspected unsafe behavior” until the project verifies the impact.
Why the distinction changes the channel
A normal issue is visible to everyone as soon as it is posted. Public proof of concept, logs, package names, hostnames, or scanner output can disclose a weakness before a fix exists. A false-positive explanation may be safe to discuss publicly, but you should still follow the project’s policy because the evidence can reveal private repositories, internal package names, or weaknesses in a rule. When in doubt, start privately and let maintainers decide whether public discussion is safe.
Preserve evidence without creating a second incident
Before changing the environment or rerunning the scan, save the original result. Your report is much easier to validate when maintainers can see what the scanner actually produced, rather than a paraphrase after configuration has changed.
- Record the exact tool identity. Capture the scanner name, version, rule or advisory identifier, plugin or database version if shown, and the date and time of the scan.
- Record the affected component. Note the package or dependency name, version, repository and commit if relevant, manifest or lockfile entry, and the file or code location named by the scanner.
- Capture the execution context. Include operating system, architecture, runtime or platform version, relevant build mode, container or CI context, scanner configuration, enabled rules, and command-line options.
- Preserve the original output. Keep the complete message, severity, evidence snippet, remediation text, exit code, and machine-readable output when available. Do not edit the original before saving it.
- Redact secrets and private identifiers. Remove credentials, access tokens, private URLs, customer data, proprietary package names, internal hostnames, and personal information. Replace a secret with a clear marker such as
<redacted-token>and explain what was removed. - Copy only the smallest useful reproducer. A minimal manifest, lockfile excerpt, configuration fragment, or test project is safer than uploading an entire private repository.
Keep an untouched copy in a controlled location and make a separate redacted copy for submission. If the scanner output itself contains a secret, rotate or revoke that secret according to your organization’s incident process; reporting the leak does not replace credential remediation.
Find the project’s approved reporting route
Check the project’s own instructions before choosing a channel. A project may limit reports to a particular component, require encryption, ask for a specific subject line, or publish a disclosure timetable. The following routes are ordered by the circumstances in which they fit.
| Route | Best fit | Visibility and caveat |
|---|---|---|
Repository security policy or SECURITY.md contact |
The project publishes its preferred intake procedure | Follow the project’s scope, encryption instructions, contact address, and escalation rules. |
| GitHub private vulnerability reporting | A GitHub-hosted public repository has enabled the feature | Structured private route to maintainers; availability is repository-specific. |
| Public issue asking only for a private contact | No security policy or private route is visible | The issue is public immediately. Include no vulnerability details, evidence, affected versions, or proof of concept. |
| Published security email or other project intake | The project specifies a direct contact, especially outside GitHub | Verify the address, encryption requirements, scope, and any required format from the project’s own policy. |
Read the repository security policy
For a GitHub project, inspect the repository’s Security tab and look for SECURITY.md. Follow the policy’s stated contact method even when another route seems more convenient. Pay attention to whether the policy covers the scanner, its rules, integrations, release branches, or only the project’s runtime code. A policy may also specify an encryption key, supported versions, safe-harbor language, expected acknowledgments, or a preferred disclosure process.

If the policy directs you to a separate security team or form, use that route rather than opening a normal issue. Keep a private copy of the policy and the exact address or form used so you can show how the report was submitted later.
Use GitHub private vulnerability reporting when it is enabled
On a GitHub-hosted public repository, open the repository, select the Security tab, and choose Report a vulnerability when that option is available. GitHub describes this as a structured private route that sends the details to maintainers. The repository must have enabled the feature, so its absence does not mean that the project has no security process.
- Open the target repository and select Security.
- Choose Report a vulnerability if the repository offers it.
- Enter the affected component, versions, environment, reproduction steps, impact, and requested disclosure timing in the private form.
- Attach only redacted files or a minimal reproducer. Check every attachment for credentials and internal data.
- Submit the report and save the resulting identifier, timestamp, and any private conversation link.
A repository security advisory can support private collaboration while maintainers investigate, validate the impact, prepare a fix, and later publish details when disclosure is appropriate.
“It’s good practice to report vulnerabilities privately to maintainers.”

When no private GitHub route is visible
If the project has no security policy and does not expose private vulnerability reporting, GitHub’s guidance is to open a public issue that asks only for the project’s preferred private security contact. Write no description of the scanner result, no affected version, no log excerpt, and no proof of concept. A suitable issue is short: explain that you may have a security-sensitive report and ask where to send it privately.
Do not assume that a maintainer’s personal profile, a general support forum, or a public chat room is an approved confidential channel. Wait for the project’s direction, or use another security contact it publicly documents.
Projects hosted outside GitHub
Use the project’s published security email, reporting form, or encrypted channel. Confirm the address from the project’s own policy rather than relying on an old issue, a search result, or an address copied from an unrelated project. If encryption is required, obtain the stated public key or instructions before sending sensitive details. OSS-SIRT’s draft policy names encrypted email as an alternative when GitHub reporting is unavailable or unsuitable; that is an example policy for that team, not a universal address or rule for every scanner project.

Build a report maintainers can reproduce
A report should let a maintainer answer three questions quickly: what produced the finding, why you believe it is inaccurate or unsafe, and what a user or attacker could do with the result. Include the following information when it is relevant and safe.
| Report element | What to include |
|---|---|
| Project and repository | Project name, repository URL or identifier supplied by the project, branch or release, and the component responsible for the behavior. |
| Scanner identity | Scanner name and exact version, rule or advisory identifier, plugin/database version, and invocation command with secrets removed. |
| Affected software | Package, module, image, or code location; installed and declared versions; lockfile or manifest evidence; and the commit or build artifact if relevant. |
| Environment | Operating system, architecture, runtime, platform, container or CI context, relevant configuration, and network conditions. |
| Observed output | Exact scanner output, severity, evidence, remediation text, exit status, and whether the result is deterministic. |
| Reproduction | Minimal setup and ordered steps from a clean or stated starting point to the alert. Identify files that must be created and commands that can be run safely. |
| Reason for the report | Explain the mismatch or unsafe behavior and cite the package, version, configuration, or code-path fact that supports your interpretation. |
| Impact | What a user, attacker, or downstream automation could cause; required permissions or conditions; and possible effects on confidentiality, integrity, or availability. |
| Disclosure preferences | Whether the report contains sensitive information, a requested embargo or disclosure date, and whether you want credit. |

State what you have not tested. For example, if you reproduced the finding only on one operating system or one scanner release, say so. A precise limitation is more useful than implying that every version or environment behaves the same way.
How to substantiate a false-positive claim
Show the mismatch between the scanner’s premise and the actual project state. Keep each claim tied to an observable fact.
Version or package mismatch
Show the installed version and the declaration that controls it. If the alert names a vulnerable release but the lockfile resolves a patched release, include the relevant redacted lockfile lines and the command or build step that produced the resolved dependency. If multiple dependency trees exist, identify which one the scanner inspected.

Unreachable code path
Explain the configuration, feature flag, platform, or entry point that prevents the reported code from executing. Include a minimal test or configuration that demonstrates the path is disabled. Avoid claiming that code is unreachable solely because you did not observe it in one run; identify the condition that blocks it.
Incorrect package or rule match
Provide the package coordinates, ecosystem, namespace, file path, and the text that triggered the rule. Explain why the matched name is not the affected component. This is especially important when similarly named packages, vendored copies, generated files, or test fixtures are present.

Re-run safely and compare
After preserving the original result, repeat the scan with one controlled change at a time: the current scanner release, a documented configuration, or a minimal fixture. Record which change removes or preserves the finding. Do not delete evidence or upgrade the dependency merely to make the alert disappear; the original state is what maintainers need to inspect.
How to handle an unsafe disclosure or scanner vulnerability
Move the conversation to a private channel before sharing details when the result could help someone compromise a user or expose information that should not be public.

- The scanner prints credentials, source code, private package metadata, or complete secret-bearing URLs.
- An attacker can influence a manifest, advisory feed, rule file, update package, or input document to execute code or alter a security decision.
- The scanner recommends a remediation that disables authentication, verification, isolation, or another protection under conditions where that advice is unsafe.
- A crafted dependency or repository causes the scanner to misclassify a serious issue as safe, or to suppress alerts in a way users cannot detect.
- The finding or output creates a reliable path to compromise confidentiality, integrity, or availability for scanner users or downstream systems.
Describe the behavior without publishing a weaponized proof of concept. Maintainers may need a private reproducer, but the first report can often establish impact with a minimal input and a controlled demonstration. State the attacker’s required access, whether exploitation is local or remote, what permissions the scanner has, and what data or decisions are affected.
Do not assign a definitive severity prematurely
Report the observable impact and conditions rather than presenting an unverified severity rating as fact. The project may classify the issue differently after checking exploitability, affected versions, trust boundaries, and available mitigations. A useful sentence is: “Under this configuration, a user who scans an attacker-controlled manifest can cause the scanner to disclose the following data,” followed by redacted evidence.
Protect the disclosure itself
Use the project’s encryption instructions, private vulnerability form, or another approved confidential route. Restrict access to the report inside your own organization, avoid forwarding the details to public mailing lists, and remove sensitive attachments from shared ticketing systems. If a public issue is already open, do not paste the private report into it; ask maintainers to continue in the secure channel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Submit, validate, and coordinate disclosure
Once the report is sent, remain available for clarification while preserving the original evidence.
- Save the submission record. Keep the date, channel, report identifier, exact project version, and copies of what you sent.
- Ask for acknowledgment and classification. Request confirmation that maintainers received the report and ask whether they are treating it as a false positive, a potential vulnerability, or another issue.
- Offer a safe reproduction session. Provide additional logs or a minimal fixture through the same private channel. Do not send newly discovered secrets or a more dangerous exploit unless maintainers request it and the channel is suitable.
- Agree on disclosure handling. Discuss whether a fix, mitigation, rule update, or scanner release is needed; what versions are affected; who will receive credit; and when details may become public.
- Wait for a usable mitigation when possible. GitHub describes the common process as a private report, maintainer fix and validation, followed by publication of details, ideally with a patch available.
- Update the report when facts change. Send new reproduction results, newly affected versions, or evidence that exploitation is occurring, clearly labeled with dates.
GitHub recommends involving the reporter when maintainers verify impact and veracity. Cooperation does not require you to surrender control of your own records; keep a dated timeline of every exchange.

Interpreting response timelines
Response targets are project-specific. OSS-SIRT’s draft Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure policy, version 0.1 last updated June 3, 2026, proposes acknowledgment within two business days and an initial assessment within ten business days. Those are draft defaults for that policy, not a promise by every scanner project. Severity, active exploitation, maintainer availability, and patch complexity can change the timetable.
Do not announce a deadline as if it binds a project that has not agreed to it. If you need a date for legal, operational, or coordination reasons, state it as a request and explain why. Record any agreed embargo or publication date in writing.
If maintainers do not respond
Follow the escalation or disclosure policy that the project publishes. Check whether the security contact has an alternate address, a coordinator, or an instruction for unanswered reports. Send one concise follow-up containing the original identifier, submission date, current risk, and a safe way to contact you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not switch to a public issue containing the vulnerability details merely because the first channel is slow. If there is active exploitation or immediate danger, communicate that clearly through the project’s documented escalation path and your organization’s incident-response process. If no escalation path exists, keep a record of reasonable attempts and avoid disclosing secrets or an actionable exploit while seeking an appropriate trusted coordinator.
Common reporting mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Opening a public issue with the full proof of concept | Anyone can copy the details before a fix exists. | Use the security policy or private vulnerability route; if none exists, ask publicly only for a private contact. |
| Calling an alert a confirmed vulnerability | Maintainers may dismiss an overstated or unverified claim. | Describe the observed behavior and call it a suspected or potential vulnerability until validation. |
| Sending only a screenshot | A screenshot hides versions, configuration, and reproducible steps. | Include exact output, tool version, environment, configuration, and a minimal reproduction. |
| Attaching an entire private repository | Unnecessary source code and secrets increase exposure. | Send a redacted fixture or the smallest relevant excerpts. |
| Omitting the scanner configuration | Maintainers cannot tell whether a rule, plugin, or option caused the result. | Record relevant flags, enabled rules, database versions, and build context. |
| Assuming a generic response deadline | Different projects have different capacity and policies. | Use the project’s stated timetable; treat OSS-SIRT’s draft figures as an example only. |
| Deleting the original environment before reporting | The result may no longer be reproducible. | Preserve the original output and environment details, then test changes separately. |
| Posting a sensitive report in a maintainer’s public chat | Chat history may be public, archived, or inaccessible to the right team. | Use the published security contact or encrypted route. |
Two examples of the workflow
Example: a dependency version false positive
A scanner reports a vulnerability in package A version 1.4. The lockfile resolves package A 1.8, while the manifest allows a broad range. You preserve the original command and output, record the scanner and advisory versions, and redact the repository name. You then verify which lockfile the scanner read and reproduce the result in a minimal project. Your report explains the declared and resolved versions, shows the relevant lockfile excerpt, and asks maintainers to check the rule’s version matching. Because the evidence does not indicate that the scanner itself can be exploited, the project’s normal issue or support route may be appropriate if its policy permits it; use the private route if the package or repository is confidential.
Example: scanner output leaks a credential
A scan of an attacker-controlled repository prints an environment token in its diagnostic output. You stop copying the output into public tickets, preserve a redacted version, and revoke the exposed token through your organization’s process. You inspect the project’s security policy and submit the original behavior privately, identifying the scanner release, operating system, configuration, minimal input, and the exact output pattern with the token replaced. You describe the potential confidentiality impact without publishing a working exploit. Maintainers can then validate the issue, prepare a fix or mitigation, and coordinate disclosure before details are released.
Quick Recap
Final pre-send checklist
- Have you identified the scanner, exact version, rule or advisory, component, and affected version?
- Did you preserve the original output, command, time, environment, and configuration?
- Can a maintainer reproduce the behavior from your ordered steps?
- Have you explained why the finding appears inaccurate or unsafe without overstating certainty?
- Did you assess realistic impact and the conditions required to trigger it?
- Did you remove credentials, tokens, private package names, personal data, and unnecessary source code?
- Did you check the repository Security tab and
SECURITY.mdbefore selecting a channel? - If no private route exists, will your public issue ask only for a security contact?
- Have you stated requested disclosure timing and credit preference, if relevant?
- Did you save the submission identifier and agree how follow-up will occur?
