To report a fake shopping ad on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, open the suspicious ad and use the report control attached to it. Choose the closest available option for a scam, fraud, counterfeit goods, or misleading content. If the seller’s profile, a post, or a shop listing is also suspicious, report that separately: each is a different target. If you have already paid or shared personal information, stop engaging with the seller and take the recovery steps below.
Before reporting: identify what you need to report
A paid ad, the account behind it, an individual post, and a shop listing are separate pieces of content. Reporting one does not necessarily report the others. Start with the item you saw, then report any other suspicious targets using their own report controls.

- Paid ad: Use the report control on the ad itself. Pick the closest scam, fraud, counterfeit, or misleading-ad reason available.
- Account: Report the seller or impersonator’s profile if it appears fraudulent.
- Post or product: Report the specific post or shop listing as well as the account when appropriate.
Platform menus change. For Facebook and Instagram, use the option currently shown on the ad rather than relying on a particular menu label. Do not click through to the seller’s site, message the seller, or provide information to investigate the ad.

Scam content and TikTok Shop listings
TikTok’s guidance directs users to report suspicious scam content under “Frauds and Scams.” For a suspicious TikTok Shop listing, report it in the app as “Scam or Fraud.” If both the content and the account seem fraudulent, submit separate reports for each relevant target. Report an account
- In the TikTok app: Open the profile, tap Share, tap Report, choose Report account, select the reason, and submit.
- In a browser: Open the profile, select More options, choose Report, then Report account, select a reason, and submit.
For impersonation, use the account-report flow and choose “Pretending to Be Someone,” or use TikTok’s dedicated reporting form. TikTok provides different instructions for U.S. and non-U.S. accounts, so identity-document requirements may differ by location. Paid ads promoting counterfeit or infringing goods
For a TikTok paid ad or commercial content promoting counterfeit goods or unauthorized use of a trademark or copyright, TikTok provides an in-app or in-web report control and an online intellectual-property report form. Use this route for ads or commercial content, not ordinary user posts or TikTok Shop content; TikTok says reports for those other types may be rejected through the paid-ad/IP route. TikTok’s Ad Library is for viewing ad information, not submitting an enforcement report.

Report a suspicious ad on Facebook or Instagram
Open the suspicious ad and use the report control attached to it. Choose the closest scam, fraud, counterfeit, or misleading-ad option the current app offers. The exact paid-ad menu labels are not established here, so do not assume a particular sequence or label will appear.

If the seller’s profile, a product, or a product-tagged post is also suspicious, report that item through its own controls. Meta’s educational material describes reporting Instagram seller profiles, products, and product-tagged posts, but it dates from 2021 and does not establish the current paid-ad reporting labels. Use ad libraries for context, not to file a report
Meta’s Ad Library can help you look up ads across Meta technologies and gather advertiser context, but it is not a substitute for reporting an ad through its report control. Meta says a new ad may take up to 24 hours after its first impression to appear in the library, so not finding it there does not prove it is not live. TikTok’s Ad Library likewise provides transparency information rather than the enforcement-report route.
Recognize warning signs without taking unnecessary risks
A suspicious ad is not proof by itself that a seller is fraudulent. The FTC warns that scammers may impersonate legitimate companies in social ads, offer unusually deep discounts on recognized brands, and send people to fake sites designed to collect money or personal information. TikTok also warns that online scams can seek credentials, addresses, phone numbers, passwords, or money.

- Check who the actual seller is; do not assume the advertised brand is the seller.
- Search the seller’s name alongside terms such as “scam,” “complaint,” or “review,” and compare the price with other sellers.
- Check the brand’s official website, reached independently, to see whether it confirms the product or seller.
- Avoid unknown links and do not share passwords, verification codes, or other sensitive details.
- Be especially wary if a seller insists on payment by gift card, wire transfer, payment app, or cryptocurrency.
Meta has described scam tactics including misuse of celebrity or brand identities and “cloaking,” in which a linked page presents one version to ad reviewers and another to users. These are examples, not a complete checklist, and a single warning sign does not establish that an ad is fraudulent. If counterfeit goods or brand impersonation are involved, you can also alert the brand using contact information found independently on its official website.
If you already paid or shared information
If you paid from the United States
- Stop engaging with the seller. Do not pay a fee or share account credentials with anyone claiming they can recover your money.
- Contact your payment provider promptly. The FTC says a credit-card charge may be disputable if an order never arrives or is materially different from what you ordered; a dispute is not a guaranteed refund.
- Report the scam: Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you are concerned about identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov.
- If you shared a password or code, change the affected password through the official service and enable its available account protections. Do not use links sent by the suspected seller.
The FTC’s cited advice is U.S.-specific. If you are elsewhere, contact your local consumer-protection or cybercrime authority and your payment provider using their official channels; the appropriate reporting routes vary by country.

What platform enforcement figures can—and cannot—tell you
Meta reported in March 2026 that it removed more than 159 million scam ads for policy violations in 2025, took down 10.9 million Facebook and Instagram accounts associated with criminal scam centers, and removed 92% of those scam ads before anyone reported them. These are Meta’s own enforcement figures, not an independently audited count or a measure of the total number of scam ads on its services. A report can still help flag content, but the figures do not establish what action will be taken on any individual report. Meta’s March 2026 account of its anti-scam work provides the figures and describes its enforcement efforts.
