Use the reporting control attached to the specific Facebook post, photo, comment, message, or profile when you need content reviewed. A hacked account uses a separate recovery route at facebook.com/hacked. Privacy concerns may require either changing an audience setting or reporting a malfunction. After submitting a report, use Support Inbox to check Facebook’s decision and any available review or appeal options.
Choose the route that matches the problem
Facebook’s tools are split by what is affected. Sending a content report will not recover an account you can no longer access, and changing an audience setting will not report an impersonating profile. Start with the route in this table.

Menu names and the position of the reporting control can differ between the Facebook app, a mobile browser, and a computer. Open the menu attached to the exact item you are concerned about and follow the labels shown on your screen.
Report a Facebook post, photo, video, comment, or other content
1. Open the menu for the exact item
Navigate to the post, photo, video, comment, message, or other piece of content. Use its attached options menu rather than a general help form. On different surfaces this may appear as a three-dot menu, an options button, or a similar control.

2. Select the reporting command
Choose the command that reports the item and continue through Facebook’s prompts. If you are reporting a comment, use the comment’s own menu; if you are reporting a post or photo, use that item’s menu. Reporting the wrong object can send reviewers an incomplete picture of the problem.
3. Pick the closest accurate reason
Facebook asks you to classify what happened. Select the category that most accurately describes the issue, such as harassment, impersonation, privacy-related abuse, or another Community Standards concern shown in the current menu. Do not select a more dramatic category merely to increase the chance of action. The usefulness of the report depends on the facts and the category matching the content.
4. Submit and retain the report information
Complete the prompts and submit the report. Keep any confirmation or reference information Facebook presents. Save the direct link to the content, the account name, and screenshots if you may need to explain the issue later. Do not edit screenshots in a way that removes the date, account name, or surrounding context.

A report starts a review; it is not proof that a violation occurred and it does not guarantee removal. Facebook says it removes or hides reported content when its review finds a violation of its Community Standards. The decision is based on that review, not on the number of people who report the same item. Repeated reports do not automatically force removal.
Report a person or profile
When the concern is an account rather than one specific post, open the profile and use the profile’s options menu. Follow the displayed reporting prompts and identify the behavior that concerns you. If a particular post, photo, or message is also problematic, report that item separately so reviewers can see the exact content.
Impersonation has a special distinction. A Messenger conversation has a documented in-product path, while an impersonating Facebook profile may direct you to Facebook’s Help Center flow. Do not assume that a menu in Messenger reports the entire Facebook profile or every item published by it.

Recover a hacked or compromised Facebook account
Use the account-recovery route, not an ordinary content report
If someone changed your password, took over your account, or is signing in without your permission, go to facebook.com/hacked. Facebook’s Help Center recommends using a device you have used to log in before. This route is designed to identify the compromised account and guide recovery; reporting one of the attacker’s posts does not restore account access.
Work through the recovery prompts
- Open
facebook.com/hackedon a familiar phone, tablet, or computer if possible. - Follow the prompts to identify your account and explain the security problem.
- Complete the identity or contact checks Facebook presents and reset access as instructed.
- Review account details after you regain access, including the email address, phone number, password, and active sessions.
- Remove unfamiliar changes and sign out of sessions you do not recognize.
The exact screens can change, so use the recovery choices currently shown rather than relying on an old screenshot or a menu from a different account state.
Secure the account after recovery
Facebook’s account-security guidance points to login alerts, two-factor authentication, and phishing guidance. Turn on login alerts so you can notice unfamiliar access, and enable two-factor authentication using an available method in your security settings. Treat unexpected messages or links that ask for your password or security code as potential phishing attempts. Enter credentials only through Facebook’s own sign-in and recovery pages.
Report impersonation in Messenger
For a Messenger conversation in which an account is pretending to be someone, Facebook documents this sequence:
- Open the conversation in Messenger.
- Choose Privacy & support.
- Choose Report.
- Select Pretending to be someone.
- Identify whom the account is pretending to be.
- Submit the report.
This procedure applies to the Messenger conversation surface. Facebook’s Messenger guidance directs people who are reporting impersonation on Facebook itself to the Facebook Help Center, so use the profile’s Facebook reporting route when the problem is a Facebook account or profile rather than the conversation alone.

When you simply want to change visibility
If the information is visible because of an audience choice, adjust the relevant setting instead of filing a violation report. In Facebook, open Settings & privacy, then Audience and visibility. Depending on your profile and current interface, controls may cover:

- Profile information and details
- Who can find or contact you
- Posts and stories
- Followers and public content
- Tagging and review of tags
- Blocking
Change each applicable audience control and check the result from the account or view for which you are concerned. Available controls can differ by profile type, so a setting shown for one account may not appear for another.
When a setting appears to malfunction
If you selected a restrictive audience but Facebook continues to expose the information contrary to that setting, treat it as a technical problem. Use Facebook’s privacy troubleshooting material and its Report a Bug route. Include the setting you changed, the audience you selected, the content that remained visible, and the steps that reproduce the problem. A bug report asks Facebook to investigate behavior; it is different from reporting another user’s content for a Community Standards violation.
When the exposure is in a search-engine cache
Facebook does not control cached results held by an external search engine. If an old Facebook page or snippet remains in a search result after the Facebook content or setting changed, use the search engine’s own removal or outdated-content process. Reporting the Facebook page will not give Facebook control over that external cache.

After you report content, Facebook says it sends a notification to Support Inbox. Open Support Inbox and look for the area that contains reports about other people. There you can inspect the status and the decision for a report you submitted.
Facebook may state that the reported content did not violate its standards and therefore remains available. That outcome does not mean the report failed to submit; it means the review did not find a violation under the standard Facebook applied. A report also cannot guarantee that content will be removed simply because it is offensive, unwanted, or personally upsetting if Facebook’s review does not classify it as a standards violation.
Request another review when the option appears
If Facebook offers a further review, request it from the decision in Support Inbox. Facebook’s Help Center describes these second reviews as usually completed within 24 hours. “Usually” is a typical service timing, not a guarantee, and the actual interface may display a different status while the review is pending.

Use the second-review option attached to the decision rather than submitting unrelated duplicate reports. Explain the specific reason you believe the first decision overlooked the content or applied the wrong category.

Some content decisions that have already been reviewed twice may qualify for appeal to the Meta Oversight Board. Eligibility is limited, and the Board selects only some eligible appeals, so not every Facebook decision can be sent there.
The Facebook Help Center page describing this process states that an appeal must be filed within 15 days after the decision. Deadlines and eligibility rules can change. If an appeal option is presented, read the current instructions in that flow and confirm the deadline shown for your specific decision before submitting.
Troubleshoot common reporting problems
The report button is missing
Check that you opened the menu for the exact content or interaction. A profile, post, comment, photo, and Messenger conversation can expose different controls. Try the same item in the Facebook app and a browser if one surface does not display the command, and make sure you are signed in to the account that is experiencing the issue.
The menu wording does not match instructions
Facebook changes labels and layouts across devices, browsers, languages, profile types, and product updates. Look for the equivalent options, such as an item’s three-dot menu, a privacy-and-support section, or a report command. Follow the prompts that describe the same action instead of selecting an unrelated menu item because its wording is familiar.
You reported the wrong thing
If you reported a post when the real issue is account takeover, stop filing content reports and use facebook.com/hacked. If the issue is who can see your own information, change Audience and visibility. If a setting does not behave as selected, use Report a Bug. Routing the problem correctly gives Facebook the context needed for the appropriate decision.
You cannot see a decision
Return to Support Inbox and check the reports area, including reports about other people. Keep the confirmation information from submission and allow the status to update. If Facebook offers another review, the control appears with the decision; it is not necessarily available for every report.
You are worried about further contact from the account
Use the blocking controls available in Facebook or Messenger while you preserve the information needed for the report. Blocking changes your interaction with the account; it does not replace reporting content that you want Facebook to review.
A practical evidence checklist
Before submitting a report, collect only what is necessary to identify the issue and explain it clearly:

- The profile name and, when available, the direct link to the account or content
- A screenshot showing the relevant text, image, message, or privacy behavior
- The date and approximate time you saw the problem
- The exact Facebook surface involved, such as a post, comment, Messenger conversation, or account setting
- The category that best describes the conduct
- Your report confirmation or reference information
Do not include unrelated private information in a report. If the issue involves another person’s personal data, describe the exposure accurately and avoid spreading the material further while documenting it.
What to expect from Facebook’s process
Facebook’s process has three separate outcomes that are easy to confuse:
- Submission: Facebook accepts the report and records it for review.
- Decision: Facebook determines whether the reported content violates its Community Standards and notifies you through Support Inbox.
- Further review or appeal: Facebook may offer another review, and a limited set of twice-reviewed decisions may qualify for an Oversight Board appeal.
These stages explain why a submitted report can remain visible, why a hacked account needs a recovery route, and why a privacy-setting problem may require a bug report rather than a standards report.
