The official method is Party Sync: group with a player whose character still has the quest, synchronize the party to that player’s quest state, and accept any eligible quests labeled Replay Quest. The replay is temporary, rewards are available once per day, and Blizzard excludes some quests with major story consequences.
What happens when a quest character dies?
A non-player character’s death is a story event, not a trigger that reopens every quest connected to that character. World of Warcraft does not provide a documented “character death replay” switch, and the completed-quest flag on your character is not automatically removed when the NPC disappears or dies in the story.

Whether you can see the quest again depends on two separate conditions: the quest must be eligible for Party Sync replay, and someone in your party must still have that quest incomplete. If either condition fails, the original quest will not become available on your character through normal questing.

This distinction matters for quests that contain a memorable conversation, cinematic, or decision involving a character who is later killed. You may be able to experience the quest again with a friend’s lower-progress character, but that does not change your own campaign progress or permanently restore the quest to your log.

The official way to replay a completed quest
Party Sync is Blizzard’s documented feature for letting players who finished certain quests replay them alongside friends who have not. When synchronized, the more advanced character temporarily follows the party member’s eligible quest state. Blizzard describes the resulting entries as “Replay Quests.”
The friend does not need to be on the same step of every storyline. They do need to have the specific quest incomplete and be in your party when Party Sync starts. If nobody in the group has the quest available, there is no quest state for Party Sync to copy and no replay entry to display.
Before you start: requirements and expectations
Find a character with the quest still incomplete
Ask a friend, guildmate, or another trusted player to check whether the quest is in their log or available from its original giver. The useful character is the one who has not completed the quest—not necessarily a newly created character and not necessarily one on the same realm, provided the game lets you form the required party.

Party Sync does not edit your permanent quest history. The replayed quest remains available only while the party is synchronized. When Party Sync ends, the replay quest disappears and your character returns to its normal quest state.
Separate story viewing from progression
You can use the replay to read dialogue, watch an associated cinematic, and follow the quest’s gameplay again. Do not treat it as a way to roll back campaign choices, reopen a permanently completed branch, or create a second permanent completion on the same character.

Plan around the reward limit
Blizzard states that replay rewards can be earned once per day. The daily limit applies to the replay feature, so repeating the same quest several times during one day is useful for seeing the sequence again but should not be expected to produce unlimited reward claims.
How to activate Party Sync and replay the quest
- Invite the player who still has the quest. Form a normal party with the friend whose character has the target quest incomplete. Confirm the quest name before syncing, especially if the storyline has several similarly named steps.
- Open the Map & Quest Log. Press M to open the map, then use the quest-log controls displayed with it. The Party Sync control is part of this interface.
- Choose “Start Party Sync.” Click Start Party Sync in the lower-right corner of the Map & Quest Log. The game prepares the party to use the quest state of the eligible member.
- Have every party member accept the confirmation dialog. Each player must accept the prompt. If one person declines or lets the dialog expire, synchronization does not complete; start the process again after everyone is ready.
- Check the quest tracker. While synced, look for the target entry and accept it if it is marked Replay Quest. Replayable completed quests can appear alongside the active player’s normal objectives.
- Play the sequence while the sync is active. Travel to the objectives, interact with the relevant NPCs, and watch any dialogue or cinematics you want to revisit. Keep the party synchronized until you finish the portion you want to experience.
- End the session deliberately. When you leave Party Sync or the synchronization ends, replay quests disappear. If you want to revisit the scene again later, you must repeat the setup with an eligible party member.
The friend who owns the incomplete quest provides the reference state; they do not have to abandon it for you. Avoid abandoning or turning in the quest before the group begins syncing, because doing so can remove the state that makes the replay possible.
How to tell whether a completed quest is replayable
Replay Quest icon
An eligible completed quest is shown as a Replay Quest while Party Sync is active. That label is the practical confirmation that the game has recognized your previous completion and is offering a temporary replay.
No icon at all
Blizzard says quests that cannot be replayed do not show a replay icon. If the quest is absent from the synchronized tracker, the game is not offering it through Party Sync at that moment. Check that the friend still has the exact quest and that everyone accepted the sync prompt before concluding that it is excluded.
Grey icon
A grey icon means the group does not qualify at that moment. The cause can be a mismatch in the party’s quest states or another eligibility condition. Recheck the incomplete quest holder, leave and restart Party Sync, and inspect the tracker again.
Story-impacting exclusions
Some quests with significant story implications are deliberately excluded on a case-by-case basis. This is the most important limitation for a quest connected to a character’s death: the subject matter may be exactly why the quest cannot be replayed. Party Sync cannot override that design decision.
Why the character’s death does not guarantee a replay
The death may happen in a later quest, cinematic, expansion, or phase than the quest you want to revisit. The game still evaluates the original quest’s eligibility rules rather than the NPC’s current story status. A dead character can have a replayable earlier quest, an excluded story quest, or a quest that is simply unavailable because no party member has it incomplete.
There is also no documented command or interface option that resets all completed quests on a main character. Resetting the entire quest history would affect campaign progression, achievements, unlocks, and narrative choices, so the supported feature is intentionally narrower: temporary synchronization to another player’s state.
If the target quest is excluded, the practical alternatives are to watch a recap, follow the story on another character that has not completed that section, or use a separate mode that was designed to revisit a larger part of the storyline. None of those options changes the completed-quest flags on your main.
Limits that commonly surprise players
- Repeatable quests are not a workaround. Daily quests and World Quests cannot be replayed through Party Sync’s completed-quest feature.
- Replay rewards are once per day. You may be able to run through the content again during the same day, but reward eligibility is limited.
- Replay quests end with the sync. Leaving the party, stopping Party Sync, or otherwise ending synchronization removes the temporary entry.
- Not every narrative quest is included. Blizzard excludes some quests with story implications, and the decision is made case by case.
- The friend must retain the quest state. If the only eligible party member completes, abandons, or otherwise loses the quest before synchronization, the replay may no longer appear.
- Party Sync is not a permanent reset. Your own completion record, campaign progress, and prior choices remain intact.
Troubleshooting when the replay does not appear
The friend cannot find the quest
Have the friend search the quest log by name and return to the original quest giver if necessary. Check that the quest has not already been completed, abandoned, or replaced by a later step. A similar quest title is not enough; Party Sync needs the exact quest state.

The Start Party Sync button is missing
Open the Map & Quest Log with M while the group is formed. The control is in the lower-right corner of that interface, not in the ordinary quest-tracker menu. If the party has changed, close and reopen the map so the current group state is displayed.
Someone did not accept the prompt
All party members must accept the confirmation dialog. Ask everyone to stop moving or fighting long enough to respond, then start Party Sync again. A declined or expired prompt leaves the group unsynchronized.
The quest shows a grey icon
Grey indicates that the group is not qualified at that moment. End the current sync, verify the incomplete quest holder, and restart Party Sync with that player still in the party. If the icon remains grey, the quest may be excluded or the party may not meet its eligibility conditions.
The quest is not listed at all
First verify that the friend has not turned in the quest and that the quest is not a daily or World Quest. If those checks pass and no icon appears, Blizzard’s rule may classify the quest as non-replayable, particularly if it changes the story in a significant way.
The replay vanished before you finished
That is expected when Party Sync ends. Reinvite the player who still has the quest, activate Party Sync again, and repeat the sequence. Because the replay is temporary, keep the party synchronized while traveling, watching dialogue, and completing objectives.
Best Value
When you want to revisit an entire story arc
Party Sync is best for one eligible quest. If your goal is to remember an expansion’s plot, see key cinematics, or experience a broad campaign again, Blizzard provides separate story-focused experiences when available. These modes recap or recreate their own content; they do not reset the original character’s quest log.
Returning Player Catch Up Experience
Blizzard’s Returning Player Catch Up Experience can be started from character selection or from the Adventure Guide‘s Tutorials tab. It is designed to help a returning player reacclimate rather than to restore every old quest.
During the guided sequence, existing quests are hidden so the player can concentrate on the catch-up flow. That temporary presentation change should not be mistaken for deletion of the character’s quest history. The same guide describes a War Within recap that walks through the expansion story and presents key cinematics.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this option when your priority is understanding what happened, remembering major characters, or getting oriented after a long absence. It is not a tool for selecting one completed NPC quest and replaying its original objectives on demand.
Legion Remix
Legion Remix is a separate, time-limited mode for revisiting Legion content at an accelerated pace. Blizzard describes access to Legion Campaign quests, local stories, World Quests, Class Order Hall campaigns, and Artifact questlines within that mode.
A World of Warcraft subscription or game time is required for the mode. Availability is seasonal, so it may not be accessible whenever you decide to revisit a Legion storyline. Progress in Legion Remix belongs to that designed experience; it is not a reset of the corresponding completed quests on your retail character.
Choose Legion Remix when you want broad coverage of Legion-era stories rather than a single scene. Choose Party Sync when you need the original quest context and can arrange a friend with the quest still incomplete.
Which method fits your goal?
| Method | Scope | Another player required? | Persistence | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Party Sync Replay Quest | One eligible completed quest at a time | Yes; a party member must have the quest incomplete | Temporary while Party Sync is active | Story-impacting quests may be excluded; replay rewards are once per day |
| Returning Player Catch Up / War Within recap | Guided reacclimation, recap material, and selected story sequence | No party requirement is stated | Limited to the catch-up or recap experience | Existing quests are hidden during the guided sequence; it does not reset the quest log |
| Legion Remix | Legion campaign, local stories, World Quests, Class Order Hall campaigns, and Artifact questlines | No party requirement is stated | Time-limited mode | Requires a World of Warcraft subscription or game time and is seasonal |
A decision path for a dead character’s questline
- Want one specific completed quest? Ask another player to confirm that the quest is incomplete on their character, then use Party Sync.
- See a Replay Quest label? Play it during the sync and remember that the entry disappears when synchronization ends.
- See no icon or a grey icon? Recheck the quest holder and sync confirmation once. If it still fails, treat the quest as ineligible rather than searching for a hidden reset command.
- Want the whole arc or its cinematics? Check the Returning Player Catch Up Experience and its War Within recap, or use Legion Remix for Legion content when that seasonal mode is available.
- Need the original quest permanently reopened on your main? That is not a documented feature. Keep the completed character intact and use one of the temporary or separate story experiences instead.
Practical checklist
- Write down the exact quest name and the NPC or chapter where it appears.
- Confirm that a friend still has that quest incomplete.
- Form the party before opening the Map & Quest Log.
- Press M, select Start Party Sync in the lower-right corner, and have everyone accept.
- Look for the Replay Quest label, not just a familiar quest title.
- Do not expect dailies, World Quests, or every story-impacting quest to qualify.
- Keep the party synchronized until the dialogue, cinematic, or objective you want has finished.
- Use a recap or a dedicated seasonal mode when the goal is an entire expansion story.
Bottom line
A character’s death does not create a special replay button and does not reset completed quests. Party Sync is the supported way to revisit an eligible completed quest: join someone who still has it, start Party Sync from the Map & Quest Log, accept the prompts, and play the temporary Replay Quest. The feature has daily reward limits and excludes some story-defining quests. For a wider narrative refresher, use the Returning Player Catch Up Experience or, when available, Legion Remix, while treating both as separate story experiences rather than permanent resets.
