The practical answer is to choose between two different kinds of replacement. Homebrew can be used as one package manager on macOS, Linux, and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) 2. A wrapper such as Meta Package Manager (mpm) gives you a common command surface while continuing to use the native package managers underneath. Neither approach guarantees that every WinGet, Homebrew, or APT package exists on every operating system, so export your current inventories, map applications by purpose, and keep the original setup until the replacement is verified.

What “replace” means in a cross-platform setup

People use “replace” to describe two different architectures:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • One shared package manager: You install the same manager on several operating systems and maintain a common declaration of dependencies. Homebrew documents this model for macOS, Linux, and WSL 2.
  • One command layer over native managers: You use a common interface, but the underlying installation still goes through each platform’s manager. Meta Package Manager (mpm) follows this model.

These models solve different problems. A shared manager can simplify scripts and Brewfiles, but its catalog and package behavior can vary by operating system. A wrapper can preserve native catalogs and platform integration, but it does not make package identifiers, versions, or availability identical. In both cases, the migration is an audit and mapping exercise rather than a guaranteed one-click conversion.

Choose the model that matches your goal

Approach What it provides Best fit Important limitation
Homebrew on macOS, Linux, and WSL 2 A single manager with Brewfile capture and restore for supported dependencies. Teams that want a common manager across Apple, Linux, and a WSL development environment. Catalog coverage, package types, support tiers, and versions are not identical across operating systems. Homebrew is rolling release, and a Brewfile is not a general version lockfile.
Meta Package Manager (mpm) A common command-line interface that can dispatch to several existing package ecosystems. Users who want consistent commands while retaining each operating system’s native manager. Installation routes differ. The Chocolatey route involves building from a repository checkout, and a Nix package submission is pending review; these are not equivalent to a polished one-line installation.
Native managers with standardized inventories WinGet, Homebrew, and APT remain in place, while lists and scripts are kept in version control. Systems whose packages are tightly coupled to a specific OS or Linux distribution. There is no universal export format demonstrated between these ecosystems. WinGet JSON and Homebrew Brewfiles require separate handling.

If your priority is a shared manager on macOS and Linux, start with Homebrew. If your priority is a familiar command surface without removing native managers, evaluate mpm. If your applications depend heavily on Windows-only, distribution-specific, or system packages, keeping native managers is often the least disruptive design.

Inventory the current machines before changing anything

Do not uninstall a manager or delete its metadata until you know which applications you actually need. Capture the inventory on each machine, then remove items that are machine-specific, obsolete, or installed only as operating-system components.

Export a WinGet inventory

WinGet exports an application list as JSON. Include versions when you need the currently installed version recorded:

winget export -o packages.json --include-versions

Review the command’s warnings and the resulting packages.json. WinGet attempts to match installed applications to the configured sources; applications without a match may not appear in the export at all. An export is therefore a starting inventory, not proof that every installed application was captured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When restoring to another Windows installation, WinGet can process the JSON serially:

winget import -i packages.json --ignore-unavailable

--ignore-unavailable allows the import to continue when an entry cannot be found. It does not translate a WinGet identifier into a Homebrew formula, an APT package name, or an identifier used by another operating system.

Capture Homebrew dependencies

Homebrew Bundle can write supported installed dependencies to a Brewfile. The global form is:

brew bundle dump --global --force

This creates or replaces the global Brewfile. Depending on the supported package types and options in use, it can contain formulae, casks, and selected entries from other ecosystems. Inspect the file before sharing it: remove host-specific tools, private taps, and items that should not be installed on every machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To restore from a file at the standard global location, use:

brew bundle install --file ~/.Brewfile

Bundle installs what the Brewfile declares and reports failures for dependencies it cannot resolve. A Brewfile is a declaration of supported dependencies, not a universal interchange format for WinGet or APT.

Inventory APT deliberately

There is no documented one-step APT export/import workflow in the material available for this guide. Instead, make a deliberate list of applications you installed for your work, separating them from packages that belong to the base operating system, desktop environment, or distribution.

For each required application, record its human purpose, current package name, repository or source, and whether it is required on every target operating system. This application-level list is more useful for migration than copying every dependency in an APT installation, because package names and dependency structures differ between distributions and between Linux and non-Linux systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Map applications, not package spelling

A package identifier is meaningful only inside its catalog. The same editor, runtime, database client, or command-line utility can have different names, split packages, or no equivalent at all in another ecosystem. Build a mapping sheet with one row per application:

Field What to record
Application and purpose The human-facing tool and what your workflow uses it for.
Current source WinGet, Homebrew formula or cask, APT, or another source included in the existing setup.
Destination identifier The exact formula, cask, package, or native-manager identifier after checking the destination catalog.
Platform scope macOS, Linux distribution, WSL 2, Windows, or a subset of those systems.
Version requirement Whether the latest release is acceptable or a specific major/minor line is required.
Configuration and data Dotfiles, credentials, service data, plugins, or other state that must be migrated separately.
Validation test The command or application task that proves the replacement works.

Do not claim parity until every critical row has a destination and a validation test. The supplied workflows do not document a direct WinGet-to-Brewfile or APT-to-WinGet converter, so automatic identifier translation should not be assumed.

Using Homebrew as the shared manager

Homebrew documents use on macOS, Linux, and WSL 2. That makes it the clearest choice when you want one manager across Apple and Linux environments or inside a WSL development environment. It does not provide native Windows package management outside WSL; Windows applications remain a separate concern.

Check the platform prerequisites

  • Linux account: The account managing Homebrew needs write access to the installation.
  • Build environment: Linux installations require a working system C compiler and standard development tools.
  • Debian or Ubuntu examples: Homebrew lists build-essential, procps, curl, file, and git among the prerequisites. Confirm the current requirements for your distribution and architecture before installing.
  • Shell setup: The Linux installation prefix is /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew; your shell configuration must evaluate the brew shellenv command so that brew and installed tools are on the path.
  • macOS prefixes: Homebrew documents /opt/homebrew for Apple Silicon. Older macOS versions have different support status; Catalina and earlier cannot run current Homebrew, so check the current support information for the exact release before planning a migration.

Requirements and support vary by architecture and distribution. Treat the installation instructions for the target system as authoritative rather than copying a setup from another machine.

Use a Brewfile as a portable declaration

After you create a Brewfile, commit a cleaned version to the project or configuration repository if it contains no secrets or private paths. On another supported system, run Homebrew Bundle against that file and inspect every result. A Brewfile can help reproduce a development environment, but it does not establish that every entry exists for every operating system.

Support for package categories is also conditional. Flatpak entries are Linux-only, and WinGet entries in a Brewfile are for WSL. Formulae and casks can behave differently on macOS and Linux, and a package that builds on one architecture may be unavailable or have different dependencies on another.

Understand the version trade-off

Homebrew is a rolling-release manager. Its documentation states that it does not support arbitrary older versions, and Brewfile is not a lockfile for pinning historical versions. If your application requires reproducibility, use the version-pinning mechanism appropriate to that application or project instead of treating a Brewfile as a complete binary lock.

Using Meta Package Manager as a common command layer

mpm is intended for the second migration model: one interface over several package ecosystems. The native manager remains responsible for catalog resolution and installation on each operating system. This can reduce the number of commands your scripts and documentation expose without pretending that Windows, macOS, and Linux have identical packages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the installation route for the operating system before standardizing on it. The project’s documented routes are not equally turnkey: the Chocolatey route involves building from a repository checkout, while a Nix package submission is pending review. Do not write automation that assumes every route is available as a maintained one-line install.

After installation, test the commands on every supported platform and record which underlying manager handled each application. A wrapper can still report an unavailable package, a different version, or a platform-specific name. Keep platform exceptions explicit in your scripts rather than hiding them behind a supposedly universal command.

A staged migration procedure

  1. Define the target platforms. List the exact macOS release and architecture, Linux distributions and architectures, WSL 2 environments, and Windows hosts that must be supported. Native Windows and WSL are separate targets.
  2. Choose the architecture. Select Homebrew for a shared manager where its support model fits, mpm for a common interface over native managers, or native managers with version-controlled inventories when platform coupling is important.
  3. Capture inventories. Export WinGet with versions where needed, dump the Homebrew Brewfile, and manually list the APT applications you deliberately installed. Save command output and warnings with the inventory.
  4. Remove noise. Exclude operating-system base packages, temporary build dependencies, host-specific GUI applications, and entries that contain machine-local paths or secrets.
  5. Map each required application. Search the destination catalog and record the exact identifier, supported platforms, acceptable version range, and a validation test. Mark applications with no confirmed equivalent instead of silently dropping them.
  6. Prepare prerequisites. Install the compiler, development tools, shell configuration, and permissions required by the destination manager. On Linux Homebrew installations, verify the compiler and listed development packages before attempting a bundle restore.
  7. Install on a test machine first. Use Homebrew Bundle, WinGet import for a Windows restore, or the selected wrapper. Let the process report unavailable and already-installed entries; do not treat a clean exit as proof that every intended application is present.
  8. Validate the working set. Check executable versions, launch critical GUI applications, run representative project commands, and verify services, plugins, configuration files, and file permissions.
  9. Keep the original setup during the bake-in period. Do not remove WinGet, Homebrew, or APT from the source machine until the destination passes the validation checklist and you have a rollback copy of configuration and data.
  10. Automate only after the mapping stabilizes. Put the cleaned inventory, platform conditions, and validation tests in version control. Document exceptions rather than forcing every platform through one list.

What happens to versions, sources, and missing packages

WinGet exports are not complete snapshots by default

Without --include-versions, an exported WinGet entry does not carry the current installed version, and an import defaults to the latest version available from the configured source. Even with versions included, the requested version may no longer be available, and an application that failed source matching may not be in the JSON.

Homebrew restores current supported dependencies

Bundle reads the declarations in the Brewfile and installs what the current Homebrew catalogs support. It does not promise the exact historical binaries from the source machine. Formula revisions, operating-system support, architecture, and cask availability can all change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

APT packages are distribution-specific

An APT package name is tied to repository metadata and distribution policy. A package that exists on one Debian-based release may be renamed, split, unavailable, or replaced on another distribution or on macOS and Windows. Preserve the application requirement and validation test, then choose the destination package deliberately.

Troubleshooting migration failures

An application is missing from the WinGet export

Read the export warnings first. If the application had no match in a configured source, add it manually to the mapping sheet and record its installer, source, and validation test. Do not infer that it was uninstalled merely because it is absent from the JSON.

WinGet import says an entry is unavailable

Check the identifier, source availability, architecture, and whether the requested version is still published. --ignore-unavailable lets other entries continue, but every skipped application still needs a manual destination decision.

Homebrew Bundle fails on Linux

Confirm write permissions, the compiler, standard development tools, shell initialization, architecture, and distribution support. Then inspect the specific Brewfile entry: it may be macOS-only, a cask unavailable on Linux, a Linux-only item being used on macOS, or an entry from an ecosystem that Homebrew supports only in a particular environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same Brewfile behaves differently on macOS and Linux

Separate shared formulae from platform-specific entries using the platform conditions supported by your configuration process. Keep WSL-specific WinGet entries and Linux-only Flatpak entries out of native macOS runs, and test each platform’s result independently.

The replacement installed a newer version than expected

That behavior is expected when the source declaration does not pin a version. Homebrew’s rolling model and WinGet’s default import behavior both favor currently available releases. Define version requirements in the application’s own supported mechanism, then add a validation check that fails when an incompatible major version is installed.

When keeping native managers is the better answer

A cross-platform command is not automatically a better operational design. Keep native managers when your fleet relies on distribution libraries, Windows-specific installers, macOS casks, signed desktop applications, or packages whose names and versions are intentionally different by platform. In that model, standardize the process instead of the binary catalog:

  • Store one inventory file or directory per platform.
  • Record the application purpose and required version range, not just package identifiers.
  • Use platform-specific install scripts with explicit failure reporting.
  • Run the same validation tests after installation on every platform.
  • Review inventories periodically so obsolete packages do not become permanent migration requirements.

This approach preserves native source selection and dependency resolution while still giving a team a repeatable, reviewable setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Homebrew when macOS, Linux, and WSL 2 are your main targets and a shared manager is more valuable than identical package coverage.
  • Choose mpm when you want a common command surface but are prepared to retain native managers and their platform-specific catalogs.
  • Choose native managers with standardized inventories when package availability, system integration, or distribution-specific behavior matters more than one command.
  • Regardless of the choice, export or record inventories first, map by application purpose, review warnings, test on a non-critical machine, and keep a rollback path.
